Project – Unlocking the Potential of Estonian Migrant Women

the Programme: 2014 - 2020 INTERREG V-A Finland - Estonia - Latvia - Sweden (Central Baltic)

Description

Description (EN): The project deals with the issues of Estonian women who have moved to Finland and is therefore in general aimed to strengthen the communities of women who have left their homeland and are living and working in another country in Baltic Sea area. Compared to local residents the migrants are socially and economically more vulnerable and face more challeges which they are often not able or prepared to foresee.  So far the issue has not been much dealt with and there is lacking systematic approach to the topic. This project is approaching the topic via different type of activities, indicating first the main questions and problems the migrant women have and making steps in helping to solve those problems via community activities. Target groups (Estonian women already living and working in Finland and also women in Estonia who are yet planning to move) are involved in most of the project activities. The activities with the target group will be organised by selecting 3 groups on women (in Turku, Helsinki and Tallinn) as peer groups involved in project activities. Project uses Peer Counselling technique which enables to give both knowledge and emotional, practical and social support to participants. Turku and Helsinki regions are selected due to the density of Estonian population and operational partner organisations working with Estonians. The common discussions of issues and problems in the peer group sessions Finland and Estonia will strengthen the sense of community and relations among the women and help them to communicate and share their life with each other also in the future. Project activities include data collection, compiling 3 peer groups of Estonian female migrants Turku, Helsinki and Tallinn, organisation of peer group events thoroughout the whole project period, establishment of walk-in info points in Turku and Helsinki, communication activities, including facebook community and project web page.
Expected Results (EN): R4.1. Communities with improvements
Expected Outputs (EN): As the result of the project the Estonian migrant women in Finland will be better integrated in the local community. Other main result will be that women can make more conscious decisions (based on more information and also more support from peers) when they are planning to immigrate. The common discussions of issues and problems in the peer group sessions Finland and Estonia will strengthen the sense of community and relations among the women and help them to communicate and share their life with each other also in the future. In addition project also enhances networking among wider target group and provides information related to the problems and questions of migrant women. Community and networking activities will increase the involvment of the targeted communities to the society in target country via strengthening their ties with each other in peer groups, via participating the events in local organisations and via the information of facebook group page. As a result of the project also the issuses related to migration (particulary migration of women) are more acknowledged both in Finland and in Estonia, on local governments level and in society in general. Also the awareness of the target group and the society in general will be increased on the issues related to emigration/migration and life/work in new countries. This will help those women who are planning to immigrate to make more concious decisions.
