In June 2014, the strategy "Sustainable Tourism in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Destination" was presented after two years of development together with nature conservation- and tourism organizations. Until 30.09.2019 the project "Watten-Agenda" will implement a significant part of this strategy in cross-border cooperation. The objectives of the project are reflected in the four work packages: (1) raising awareness and enthusiasm for the Wadden Sea, (2) knowledge and knowledge-transfer of the Wadden Sea, (3) link sustainable forms of experience with the Wadden Sea, (4) communicating the Wadden Sea beyond the region. With various measures, the project consortium of six partners implements the work packages in cross-border coordination. The project area stretches from the Dutch coast of the provinces of Friyslân and Groningen via East Frisia to the Weser on the German side and also includes the coastal hinterland. With the project "Watten-Agenda" a new practice-oriented structure of cross-border Wadden Sea Cooperation will emerge, which puts a sustainable tourism for conservation and protection of Wadden Sea World Heritage in the center.

In juli 2014 werd na een ontwikkelingsperiode van twee jaar met de natuurbeschermings- en toeristische organisaties het strategiepapier ‚Duurzaam toerisme in de Waddenzee als werelderfgoed-bestemming‘ gepresenteerd. Het project ‚Wadden-Agenda‘ voert tot 30.09.2019 een belangrijk deel van deze strategie uit in het kader van grensoverschrijdende samenwerking. De doelen van het project vinden hun neerslag in vier takenpakketten: (1) Bewustmaking van, en enthousiasmering voor de Waddenzee; (2) Kennis en de vorming van een kennisnetwerk voor de Waddenzee; (3) Verbinden van duurzame belevingsvormen met de Waddenzee; (4) Communicatie over het Waddenzee buiten de regio. Het Projektconsortium dat bestaat uit zes partners realiseert met verschillende maatregelen de verschillende takenpakketten. Het projectgebied loopt van de Nederlandse kustgebieden van de provincies Fryslân en Groningen, via Ostfriesland tot aan de Weser aan de Duitse kant en omvat ook het binnenland dat wordt gekenmerkt door de nabijheid van de zee. Met het project ‚Wadden-Agenda‘ ontstaat een nieuwe uitvoeringsgerichte structuur van de grensoverschrijdende Waddenzee-samenwerking, die duurzaam toerisme tot behoud en bescherming van het wereldnatuurerfgoed centraal stelt.

Im Juni 2014 wurde nach zweijähriger Entwicklungsphase mit Naturschutz- und Tourismusorganisationen die Strategie „Nachhaltiger Tourismus in der Destination Weltnaturerbe Wattenmeer“ vorgelegt. Das Projekt „Watten-Agenda“ setzt bis zum 30.09.2019 einen wesentlichen Teil dieser Strategie in grenzübergreifender Zusammenarbeit um. Die Ziele des Projekts spiegeln sich in den vier Arbeitspaketen wider: (1) Sensibilisierung und Begeisterung für das Wattenmeer, (2) Wissen und Wissensvernetzung über das Wattenmeer, (3) Verknüpfung nachhaltiger Erlebnisformen mit dem Wattenmeer, (4) Kommunikation des Wattenmeers über die Region hinaus. Mit verschiedenen Maßnahmen setzt das Projektkonsortium aus sechs Partnern die Arbeitspakete grenzübergreifend koordiniert um. Das Projektgebiet erstreckt sich von der niederländischen Küste der Provinzen Fryslân und Groningen über Ostfriesland bis zur Weser auf deutscher Seite und umfasst auch das maritim geprägte Hinterland. Mit dem Projekt „Watten-Agenda“ entsteht eine neue umsetzungsorientierte Struktur der grenzübergreifenden Wattenmeer-Zusammenarbeit, die einen nachhaltigen Tourismus zum Erhalt und Schutz des Weltnaturerbes in den Mittelpunkt stellt.

Achievements (EN):

With the INTERREG V A-project “Wadden-Agenda”, a new implementation-oriented structure for cross-border Wadden Sea cooperation was created between 2015 and 2019. The focus was on sustainable tourism, with the preservation and protection of the World Heritage as the main focus. The project was divided into a total of four work packages, whose individual measures contributed to the development of sustainable tourism. In addition to raising awareness and enthusiasm for the Wadden Sea, this included knowledge and knowledge networking about the Wadden Sea, linking sustainable Wadden Sea experience forms as well as the corresponding communication of this sensitive and unique natural and living area. With various measures, the project consortium implemented the work packages in a cross-border coordinated manner. For example, numerous guided tours of the Wadden Sea and events for the World Heritage Birthday for guests and locals were carried out. Training courses for restaurateurs on the use of regional and seasonal products also promoted the networking of knowledge about the Wadden Sea. Cyclists and hikers also benefit from the measures. Cross-border maps and a hiking app were developed for the 423 km long, newly created Wadden Sea route. In order to draw the attention of future generations in particular to the need to protect the natural area, numerous campaigns focused on children and young people. These included, for example, a cross-border school exchange with project days, junior ranger camps and children’s books with stories about the mudflats. The six project partners of the Wadden-Agenda included Marketing Groningen, the Province of Fryslân, Die Nordsee GmbH, the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, the International Dollard Route e. V. and East Frisia Tourism GmbH as lead partner. The project area stretched from the Dutch coast of the provinces of Fryslân and Groningen via East Frisia to the Weser on the German side and also included the maritime inland. A total of around 2.6 million euros was available for implementation during the funding period. The cross-border Wadden Sea region will continue to benefit from the experience offers developed, but above all from the structures created and intensive cooperation between the project partners and other actors, even beyond the project period. The project is continued with the Wadden Sea Agenda 2.0, in which the project partners aim at the next quality level in cross-border, sustainable Wadden Sea cooperation with new, innovative work packages.
