Project - Action plan: Joint European Management of Cross-border Connections/Transport for Islands

Description

Description (EN): There are no regular maritime connections between Corsica and Sardinia that enable the development of economic, cultural and cooperative relations with continuity and fair prices. The GEECCTT-îles action-project encompasses this challenge of the Programme and has the objective of optimising and enhancing the value of relations between the islands in the cooperation area, strengthening the weak mesh of the network of relations between the islands by creating an instrument for establishing inter-island connections that meet the needs of the territories of Corsica and Sardinia, and even Elba, which are historically linked. By means of the phases of analysis, definition and establishment, GEECCTT creates an EGTC – a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation, a legal entity formed within the EU for the shared management of cross-border transport services between the islands. In the pathway of creating the EGTC the conditions for managing regular cross-boarder maritime connections between the islands, and the legal and administrative methods for resolving the implications of this management at the level of the Member States and the European Commission will be defined. Thereby GEECCTT will create the conditions for the development of innovative and sustainable services for cross-border mobility between the islands through the port centres, also facilitating conditions for integration with the multi-modal transport system to improve connections with TEN-T networks. The result is the creation of conditions for the joint implementation and management of connections between Corsica and Sardinia – connected to TEN-T networks – in the innovative view of cross-border territorial continuity. Those benefitting from the results of this interface that completes the upper Tyrrhenian  coast will be the citizens, companies – particularly SMEs – and the communities of the island territories and the cooperation zone.
