Project - Tourism brand and green biotechnologies for the development of companies on a shared resource: citrus fruits

Description

Description (EN): MARE DI AGRUMI is a project that aims to increase the competitiveness of micro- and SMEs of the cross-border area connected to the agricultural, food and ‘green’ tourism sector. The distinctive common thread is the enhancement of a quality and multifunctional product common to all of the territories: the citrus fruit. The richness of the citrus biodiversity of the upper Mediterranean has been translated into the presence of a lively economic fabric that, over time, has created an “agricultural panorama” with plenty of charm and tourism attractiveness. However the size of the entrepreneurial fabric, made up of micro and SMEs, has limited affirmation on the market and tourism ambitions, currently seasonal. The challenge that the MARE DI AGRUMI project tackles is co-creating an original offer of innovative and shared products and services related to the theme of citrus fruits, able to be distinguished from other competing territorial strategies. These objectives will be achieved by two means: 1) innovations will be made in the production, transformation and waste management processes of citrus-growing companies through the green biotechnology supply chain, and shared aggregation and marketing strategies will be activated in order to favour the economic sustainability of agricultural activities, which are so important for the commercial appeal of the territories; 2) the tourism offer of the cross-border area will be expanded with a new ‘green’ tourism, and integrated with the socio-economic context of the territories. The project’s approach is innovative as it focuses on the territories’ economy, it places its attention on environmental problems connected with production activities – such as the problem of transforming waste into resources, and activates a dialogue between public bodies, the scientific world, companies and citizens for the creation of a new tourism brand, through a Citizen science approach, and the creation of cross-borders living labs.
