The Upper Rhine region has a dense and very busy regional road network, which results in large quantities of asphalt concrete aggregates being produced. Through an intensive exchange of experience and research, the ORRAP project hopes to increase recycling of these aggregates in order to limit negative environmental impacts (CO2 emissions, energy consumption, use of fossil resources, production of asphalt concrete waste, etc) and reduce road maintenance costs.

Die Region Oberrhein verfügt über ein dichtes, stark genutztes regionales Straßennetz. Für dessen Erhaltung und Erweiterung werden große Mengen an Ausbauasphalt benötigt. Durch einen breit angelegten Erfahrungsaustausch und verschiedene Untersuchungen zielt das Projekt ORRAP darauf ab, die Recyclingrate von Ausbauasphalt zu verbessern, und dadurch die negativen Einflüsse auf die Umwelt einzuschränken (CO2-Emissionen, Verbrauch fossiler Energie und Ressourcen, Asphaltabfall-Aufkommen) und die Straßenerhaltungskosten zu reduzieren.

La région du Rhin supérieur possède un réseau routier régional dense et très fréquenté, qui entraîne une production de grandes quantités d’agrégats de bétons bitumineux (ABB). A travers un intense échange d''expériences et diverses recherches, le projet ORRAP vise à développer le recyclage de ces ABB afin de limiter les impacts négatifs sur l'environnement (émissions de CO2, consommation d'énergie, consommation des ressources fossiles, production de déchets de béton bitumineux, etc.) et réduire les coûts d'entretien des routes.

Achievements (EN):

In 2020, the ORRAP project - optimal recycling of reclaimed asphalt on roads with little traffic came to an end and can show a positive balance. When repairing and widening the road surface in Switzerland, a large amount of asphalt is removed every year. So far, bituminous binders have been added to the asphalt so that it can be reused. Bitumen is a non-renewable resource, making the process unsustainable. The aim of the ORRAP project was to find a way to make the recycling asphalt usable again in a resource-saving way - with success. As part of the project, which was supported on the Swiss side in addition to the federal government by the Federal Materials Testing and Research Institute EMPA, the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, the Canton of Aargau and the Civil Engineering Office of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, the technical requirements for the installation of 100% road surface Reclaimed asphalt at ambient temperature without the addition of bituminous binders or rejuvenating agents (oils). The project also evaluated economic, ecological and health aspects of the surface and the potential for implementation in the Upper Rhine region. The result: a recycling technology that can help reduce used asphalt inventories. The environmentally friendly construction can also contribute to CO2 savings.

Mit dem Jahr 2020 ging auch das Projekt ORRAP - Optimales Recycling von Ausbauasphalt auf verkehrsschwachen Strassen zu Ende und kann eine positive Bilanz aufweisen. Bei der Ausbesserung und Erweiterung des Strassenbelags fällt in der Schweiz jährlich eine grosse Menge Ausbauasphalt an. Um diesen weiterverwenden zu können, werden dem Asphalt bislang bitumenhaltige Bindemittel zugesetzt. Bitumen ist eine nichterneuerbare Ressource, was das Verfahren nicht nachhaltig macht. Das Ziel des Projekts ORRAP war es, einen Weg zu finden, den Ausbauasphalt auf ressourcenschonende Weise wieder nutzbar zu machen – mit Erfolg. Im Rahmen des Projekts, das auf Schweizer Seite neben dem Bund von der Eidgenössischen Materialprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt EMPA, der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, dem Kanton Aargau und dem Tiefbauamt Kanton Basel-Landschaft getragen wurde, konnten die technischen Voraussetzungen für den Einbau von Strassenbelag aus 100% Ausbauasphalt bei Umgebungstemperatur ohne Zusatz von bituminösem Bindemittel oder Verjüngungsmittel (Öle) beschrieben werden. Das Projekt evaluierte ebenso wirtschaftliche, ökologische, und gesundheitliche Aspekte des Belags und das Potential für die Umsetzung in der Region Oberrhein. Das Ergebnis: eine Recyclingtechnologie, die helfen kann, Altasphalt-Lagerbestände zu reduzieren. Die umweltfreundliche Bauweise kann ausserdem zur CO2-Einsparung beitragen.
