Eco2Eco aims to stimulate the wood market through the market-oriented collaboration of forest owners and their organisations, the business world, knowledge institutions and the government. The initiators want to use innovation to increase efficiency in wood production and marketing. In the various partners' woodlands, which cover some 270,000 hectares, innovative management methods and techniques aimed at sustainable wood production and exploitation will be developed on 3,000 hectares. The German-developed qualification and dimensioning (QD) forest management method, for example, is being introduced into the border region, which is investigating how fir trees react to pruning or exemption and whether a viable alternative can be offered for the chemical treatment of exotics. The acquired knowledge is distributed so that it can also be successfully applied by other forest owners and managers in the rest of Flanders and the Netherlands. Eco2Eco is short for Economy to Ecology – Ecology to Economy: economy and ecology hand-in-hand within forestry as well. Forests provide various ecosystem services and the production of wood as a renewable commodity is an important aspect. The project fits in with the Europa 2020 strategy, which promotes the efficient use of resources.

Eco2eco: kwaliteitshout uit topnatuur! In het project eco2eco werkten Vlaamse en Nederlandse partners aan een hogere economische en ecologische waarde van de bossen in de grensregio Vlaanderen- Nederland. Het project liep van 2017 tot en met mei 2020. In die periode wilden de partners aantonen dat economie en ecologie in de bosbeheersector prima hand in hand kunnen gaan. Dat betekent concreet: duurzaam bosbeheer waarin het mogelijk is natuurdoelen te realiseren én tegelijkertijd economisch interessant kwaliteitshout te oogsten. Innovatief beheer De projectpartners experimenteerden met innovatieve beheermethoden, zoals het in Duitsland ontwikkelde ‘kwalificeren en dimensioneren’ (QD). Binnen eco2eco werd de methode verder ontwikkeld en aangepast aan de regionale omstandigheden, onder andere door onderlinge discussies tijdens partnerexcursies. Bijvoorbeeld over hoe en wanneer je het beste kunt opsnoeien en blessen/schalmen. In het project was ook veel aandacht voor de verjonging van bos. In totaal zijn er in de projectperiode meer dan 157.000 jonge boompjes geplant. We kozen soorten die door hun strooiselkwaliteit een bijdrage leveren aan het verbeteren van de bodem en die tegelijk op termijn kwaliteitshout kunnen leveren. Er was ook aandacht voor de beste manieren om de jonge aanplant te beschermen tegen vraat- en veegschade. Naast innovatieve beheermethoden probeerden we ook de exploitatie zo duurzaam en efficiënt mogelijk uit te voeren. Bijvoorbeeld door te experimenteren met het aanleggen van dunningspaden in de vorm van ruimingspistes op een afstand van 40m van elkaar. Hiervoor gebruikten we onder andere laser en GPS. Daarnaast ook het uitslepen van hout met een paard, een methode die in bepaalde situaties, bijvoorbeeld kwetsbare gebieden, ook geschikt kan zijn. De aanhoudende droogte was een complicerende factor voor de terreinexperimenten, maar tegelijkertijd leerzaam. Vraag, aanbod en vermarkting Het project richt zich op het produceren van kwaliteitshout dat geschikt is voor een hoogwaardige toepassing. Bijvoorbeeld meubels, parket en fineer. Om de houtproductie en - vermarkting zo goed mogelijk op elkaar af te stemmen, zijn vraag en aanbod in de grensregio in kaart gebracht. Daarnaast hebben we ook diverse nieuwe en oude verkoopmethoden getest zoals via een veiling, langs de weg en online. Daarnaast bogen we ons over de vermarkting van houtige biomassa uit het beheer van landschapselementen. Kennisdelen en communicatie Binnen het project ging veel aandacht naar het verspreiden en borgen van de ontwikkelde kennis. Op die manier kon iedere boseigenaar en -beheerder de opgedane kennis en inzichten succesvol inzien en toepassen. Zo hebben we een filmpje gemaakt, verschenen er diverse inhoudelijke artikelen en organiseerden we met regelmaat trainingen, excursies en cursussen. Tijdens het project organiseerden we ook twee kennisdagen. De eerste editie was in juni 2017 en de tweede editie was op 4 april 2019; met 250 deelnemers en veel positieve reacties een succes!
