3D printen, binnen industriële context ook wel additive manufacturing genoemd, nam de laatste jaren een hoge vlucht. Er bestaan heel wat 3D printtechnologieën zoals Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Digital Light Processing (DLP) en jetting. Dankzij deze technologieën kunnen allerhande producten geprint worden en is (dure en minder duurzame) assemblage niet meer nodig. Voor 3D printen is op de vrije markt echter slechts een beperkt aantal polymere printmaterialen beschikbaar. Een innovatieve doorontwikkeling van deze materialen dringt zich op. De behoefte aan biogebaseerde polymeren – als duurzame variant – is groot. ‘Accelerate³’ wil daarom de specifieke expertise uit Nederlands Limburg en West-Vlaanderen samenbrengen zodat de nodige kennis en testinfrastructuur structureel gebundeld kan worden. Beide regio’s staan in voor deze sector en kennen een gelijkaardig economisch weefsel dat voor het merendeel bestaat uit kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen. Daarnaast worden ze met soortgelijke uitdagingen geconfronteerd en zijn ze in eenzelfde inhoudelijk domein actief, met complementaire specialisaties. De grensoverschrijdende samenwerking tussen West-Vlaanderen en (Nederlands) Limburg biedt dan ook de ideale gelegenheid om kennis, infrastructuur en netwerk in beide regio’s gevoelig uit te breiden. Dankzij de grensoverschrijdende clustering kunnen de KMO’s en MKB’s in beide regio’s groeien. Verscheidene sectoren van zowel materiaalbedrijven, productie en software zullen baat hebben bij ‘Accelerate³’

3D printing, also referred to within an industrial context as additive manufacturing, has taken off over the past few years. There are numerous 3D printing technologies, such as fused deposition modelling (FDM), digital light processing (DLP) and jetting. Thanks to these technologies, all kinds of products can be printed and (expensive and less sustainable) assembly is no longer required. There are only a limited number of polymer print materials for 3D printing available on the free market, however. There is an urgent need for further development of these materials. The necessity for bio-based polymers as a sustainable alternative is great. ‘Accelerate³’ therefore wants to bring together specific expertise from Limburg (NL), and West Flanders (B), to structurally pool the necessary knowledge and test infrastructure. The two regions are responsible for this sector and have a similar economic fabric consisting primarily of small and medium-sized businesses. In addition, they are confronted with similar challenges and are active in the same substantive domain, with complimentary specialisations. The cross-border collaboration between West Flanders and Limburg therefore provides the ideal opportunity for considerably expanding the knowledge, infrastructure and network in both regions. The cross-border pooling allows SMEs in the two regions to grow. Various sectors of material, production and software companies will benefit from ‘Accelerate³’.

In Accelerate³ bundelden projectpartners Centexbel, Chemelot Campus BV, KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk en TUA West de krachten op het vlak van ontwikkeling van biogebaseerde materialen voor Additive Manufacturing. Beide regio’s kennen een gelijkaardig economisch weefsel dat grotendeels bestaat uit kleine en middelgrote ondernemingen. Daarnaast worden ze met soortgelijke uitdagingen geconfronteerd en zijn ze actief in het domein van Additive Manufacturing, met complementaire specialisaties, van polymeerformulaties over processing tot materiaalkarakterisatie. Dankzij het project werd de specifieke expertise en testinfrastructuur met betrekking tot 3D printen uit Nederlands Limburg en West-Vlaanderen versterkt. De voornaamste doelstelling van het project was de test- en onderzoeksfaciliteiten met betrekking tot Additive Manufacturing complementair en gezamenlijk uitbreiden. Bij de keuze van de aan te kopen 3D-printgerelateerde apparatuur werd aandacht besteed aan het optimaliseren van het 3D-printproces van materialen voor verschillende toepassingen, en aan het effect van de verschillende technologieën en materialen op het vlak van duurzaamheid. Centexbel investeerde in een Arburg Freeformer 3D printer en een nieuwe monofilamentenlijn. KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk schafte een XPS en een XRD toestel aan en investeerde in een uitbreiding van een reeds bestaande calorimeter. De apparatuur zal worden gebruikt voor onderzoek naar biogebaseerde materialen voor 3D printing, een unieke expertise in West-Europa. Naast de investering in apparatuur werd door de partners van Accelerate³ ingezet op kennisdeling en duurzame samenwerking. Projectpartner Chemelot Campus BV legde zich tijdens het project toe op de uitbouw van een grensoverschrijdende cluster op het vlak van Additive Manufacturing, ten goede van de vele KMO's en MKB’s in West-Vlaanderen en Nederlands-Limburg. Dankzij Accelerate³ kunnen bedrijven immers rekenen op een uitgebreid en complementair aanbod van zowel test- en onderzoekinfrastructuur als expertise op het vlak van Additive Manufacturing.

3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing within industrial contexts, has been on the rise in recent years. There are many 3D printing technologies such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Digital Light Processing (DLP) and jetting. Thanks to these technologies, all kinds of products can be printed and (expensive and less sustainable) assembly is no longer necessary. However, only a limited number of polymeric printing materials are available on the free market for 3D printing. An innovative further development of these materials is urgent. The need for bio-based polymers — as a sustainable variant — is high. In Accelerate³, project partners Centexbel, Chemelot Campus BV, KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk and TUA West joined forces on the development of bio-based materials for Additive Manufacturing. Both regions have a similar economic fabric, largely composed of small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, they face similar challenges and are active in the field of Additive Manufacturing, with complementary specialisations, from polymerformulations over processing to material characterisation. Thanks to the project, the specific expertise and testing infrastructure related to 3D printing from Dutch Limburg and West Flanders was strengthened. The main objective of the project was to complement and jointly expand the testing and research facilities related to Additive Manufacturing. When choosing the 3D printing-related equipment to be purchased, attention was paid to optimising the 3D printing process of materials for different applications, and to the impact of the different technologies and materials in terms of sustainability. Centexbel invested in an Arburg Freeformer 3D printer and a new monofilament line. KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk acquired an XPS and an XRD device and invested in an expansion of an already existing calorimeter. The equipment will be used for research into bio-based materials for 3D printing, a unique expertise in Western Europe. In addition to the investment in equipment, Accelerate³’s partners focused on knowledge sharing and sustainable cooperation. During the project, project partner Chemelot Campus BV focused on the development of a cross-border cluster in the field of Additive Manufacturing, for the benefit of the many SMEs and SMEs in West Flanders and the Netherlands-Limburg. Thanks to Accelerate³, companies can count on a comprehensive and complementary offer of both test and research infrastructure and expertise in the field of Additive Manufacturing.
