Nowadays, more than half of the aquatic products we consume come from aquaculture. European agriculture is stagnating and in the border region, too, small and medium-sized companies struggle to remain competitive and distinguish themselves internationally in the production, processing and trade of a range of high-quality niche products. Consequently, there is a great need for innovation in the production processes and in achieving sustainable fish farming. The first edition of ‘AQUA-VLAN’, from Interreg IV, experienced success in the sustainable farming of the much-praised omega perch and the optimised cultivation of saline vegetables, such as samphire. Moreover, important research infrastructure was put into place with the Zeeland University of Applied Sciences' Sealab, and greenhouse farming was combined with fish farming to create a closed loop system. Under the direction of Inagro, ‘AQUA-VLAN 2’ continues to build on these foundations for a strong, economically, socially and ecologically sustainable aquaculture sector. Furthermore, it specifically focuses on supporting companies in the challenges posed by this technical innovation. First and foremost, specific preconditions for expanding the aquaculture sector, such as legislation, will be examined. Secondly, the further combination of fish and greenhouse vegetables (closed loop system) in fresh and saltwater aquaculture will be investigated. Farming freshwater fish in recirculation systems and sodium problems in plants in greenhouse agriculture will be looked at, for example. In addition, the production of innovative fish feed is being investigated to further optimise the closed loop. Businesses can also use vouchers to commission company-specific studies in aquaculture.

Vandaag komt meer dan de helft van de aquatische producten die we consumeren uit aquacultuur. De Europese aquacultuurproductie stagneert en ook in de grensregio is het een uitdaging voor kleine en middelgrote bedrijven om competitief te blijven en zich internationaal te onderscheiden in de productie, verwerking en handel van een scala aan hoogwaardige nicheproducten. Daardoor is er een grote behoefte aan innovatie in de productieprocessen en het realiseren van een duurzame visteelt. De eerste editie van ‘AQUA-VLAN’ uit Interreg IV kende een succes in de duurzame kweek van de alom geprezen Omegabaars en de optimalisatie van de teelt van zilte groenten zoals zeekraal. Daarnaast werd belangrijke onderzoeksinfrastructuur gerealiseerd met het Sealab in Hogeschool Zeeland en werd glastuinbouw gecombineerd met visteelt om zo tot kringloopsluiting te komen. ‘AQUA-VLAN 2’ bouwt – onder leiding van Inagro - verder op deze fundamenten voor een sterk economisch, sociaal en ecologisch duurzame aquacultuursector en richt zich specifiek naar bedrijven om deze te ondersteunen bij uitdagingen die technische innovatie vereisen. In de eerste plaats zullen specifieke randvoorwaarden voor de uitbouw van de aquacultuursector, zoals wetgeving, onderzocht worden. Ten tweede wordt ingegaan op het verder koppelen van vis en serregroenten (kringloopsluiting) bij mari- en zoetwateraquacultuur. Zo zal onder andere de kweek van zoetwatervis in recirculatiesystemen en het natriumprobleem bij planten in glastuinbouw onderzocht worden. Daarnaast wordt gewerkt aan de productie van innovatieve visvoeders om de kringloopsluiting verder te optimaliseren. Verder kunnen bedrijven bedrijfsspecifieke studies op vlak van aquacultuur laten onderzoeken met vouchers.

Achievements (EN):

The European Interreg project Aquavlan2 supports companies in the aquaculture and greenhouse horticulture sector in the Flanders-Netherlands border region with technical innovation. In this way, it focuses on the further support and development of aquaculture in Europe. In addition to research in four specific themes, the project also provides answers to individual entrepreneurs in the sector via a voucher system. Knowledge sharing and the search for better and more sustainable cultivation techniques are central to the Aquavlan2 project. Challenges faced by the sector and individual companies form the basis for the thematic research. This is how the project partners work together on four topics: closing cycles within freshwater aquaculture, closing cycles in mariculture, preventing soil flavour in aquatic products and looking for new feeds for shellfish and fish. In addition to sector-oriented research, the project also aims to offer opportunities for individual entrepreneurs with company-specific questions within one of the four research themes. Interested entrepreneurs could apply for a voucher in a simple way and without co-financing. This will further expand the sector and strengthen existing companies’ competitiveness on a global scale. 15 vouchers were given green light, covering various research questions and different aquaculture themes. Het Europese Interreg-project Aquavlan2 ondersteunt bedrijven in de aquacultuur- en glastuinbouwsector in de grensregio Vlaanderen-Nederland met technische innovatie. Zo zet het in op de verdere ondersteuning en ontwikkeling van aquacultuur in Europa. Naast onderzoek in vier specifieke thema’s geeft het project via een vouchersysteem ook antwoorden aan individuele ondernemers in de sector. Kennisdeling en de zoektocht naar betere en duurzamere teelttechnieken staan centraal in het Aquavlan2-project. Uitdagingen waarmee de sector en individuele bedrijven geconfronteerd worden, vormen de basis voor het thematische onderzoek. Zo werken de projectpartners samen rond vier topics: sluiten van kringlopen binnen de zoetwateraquacultuur, sluiten van kringlopen in de maricultuur, preventie van grondsmaak in de aquatische producten en zoeken naar nieuwe voeders voor schelpdieren en vissen. Naast sectorgericht onderzoek wil het project ook mogelijkheden bieden aan individuele ondernemers met bedrijfsspecifieke vragen binnen een van de vier onderzoeksthema’s. Via een vouchersysteem kregen de bedrijven de unieke kans om hun vraag te laten beantwoorden door één of meer projectpartners. Geïnteresseerde ondernemers konden op een eenvoudige manier en zonder cofinanciering een voucher aanvragen. Zo wordt de sector verder uitgebouwd en versterken bestaande bedrijven hun concurrentievermogen op wereldschaal. 15 vouchers kregen groen licht, waarbij diverse onderzoeksvragen en verschillende aquacultuurthema's aan bod kwamen.
