Greenhouse farming is going through a difficult period due to rising costs and increasing global competition. As a result, both Flanders and the Netherlands are implementing a supportive policy for greenhouse farming in order to be able to achieve the necessary transition and corresponding modernisation. The goal is to find complements to the existing range, such as the commercial cultivation of microalgae used for applications in the food and textile industries, the construction sector, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Within the range of bio-based microalgae, spirulina offers the greatest potential, as it is a major source of phycocyanin (blue colouring). It could be a valuable replacement for the artificial variety, Brilliant Blue (E133), which is associated with hyperactivity and other health risks. At the moment, most microalgae are imported from Asia and the United States. The proposed cultivation in Flanders and the Netherlands therefore needs to distinguish itself by means of its high quality. The logistics process from cultivation to processing also needs to be economically appealing to ensure sufficient customers for these microalgae. Greenhouses are eminently suitable for the purpose and, with some retraining, there are plenty of people in the region with the technical knowledge required to achieve high-quality, efficient cultivation. One great benefit of the project is the cultivation of duckweed on the wastewater, which functions as an excellent water purifier. The 'blue chain' is a step towards a new, large-scale sector. If this farming proves profitable, there is room for dozens of hectares of microalgae farming under glass or in container fields, making the Flemish-Dutch border region a world-scale valuable partner.

De glastuinbouw beleeft moeilijke tijden omwille van oplopende kosten en een toenemende wereldwijde concurrentie. Zowel Vlaanderen als Nederland voeren dan ook een ondersteunend beleid naar glastuinbouw om de noodzakelijke transitie en de daarbij horende modernisering te kunnen realiseren. Hierbij wordt gezocht naar een verrijking van het bestaande aanbod zoals de commerciële teelt van microalgen, goed voor toepassingen in de voedings- en textielindustrie, bouwsector, farmacie en cosmetica. Spirulina biedt binnen het aanbod van biogebaseerde micro-algen het grootste potentieel omdat het een belangrijke bron van fycocyanine (blauwe kleurstof) bevat. Het kan een waardevolle vervanger zijn van de artificiële variant, Briljant Blauw (E133), wat in verband wordt gebracht met hyperactiviteit en andere gezondheidsrisico’s. Momenteel worden de meeste micro-algen geïmporteerd uit Azië of de Verenigde Staten. De voorziene teelt in Vlaanderen en Nederland moet zich daarom kunnen onderscheiden door de hoge kwaliteit. En ook het logistieke proces van teelt naar verwerking moet economisch interessant zijn zodat er voldoende afnemers zijn van deze micro-alg. Serres zijn hiervoor bij uitstek geschikt en in de regio zijn er voldoende mensen aanwezig met de nodig technische kennis om, mits enige omscholing, deze teelt op een kwalitatieve en efficiënte manier te realiseren. Een bijzondere surplus binnen het project is het telen van de waterplant eendenkroos op het afvalwater zodat deze als uitstekende waterzuiveraar kan fungeren. ‘De blauwe keten’ is een aanzet om tot een nieuwe grootschalige sector te komen. Als deze teelt rendabel blijkt, is er ruimte voor tientallen hectare micro-algenteelt onder glas of op containervelden, waardoor de Vlaams-Nederlandse grensregio op wereldschaal een waardevolle speler wordt.

Achievements (EN):

The commercial cultivation of microalgae is one of the possible alternatives as a new application in vacant greenhouses in Flanders and the Netherlands. One of the most well-known microalgae is spirulina, which contains in addition to useful substances a source of phycocyanine (blue dye). The project ‘The Blue Chain’ examined the extent to which spirulina and the derived product phycocyanine can be used as a sustainable raw material for high-quality applications in different sectors. In “The Blue Chain” we tried to approach the entire chain. On the one hand, a protocol was drawn up describing the main parameters that are important for a successful cultivation of spirulina in our border region. A lot of attention was paid to sustainability, economic feasibility and quality. Subsequently, a protocol was developed for the extraction and purification of phycocyanine. The phycocyanine was then used for coloring paper, cardboard, coating, biocomposite and textiles. Phycocyanine as a protein has the property of being both temperature and light sensitive, requiring thorough research before this natural dye could be applied. After a lot of efforts and additional research, stabilising the blue dye has been achieved to a limited extent, but insufficient for a wide range of applications. With paper, cardboard, coating and biocomposite, it was not possible to find an answer to UV sensitivity: after coloring the materials, they discolored over time. Textiles, especially linen and cotton, succeeded in colouring these materials successfully with the blue dye. Due to the weak UV stability, it is recommended not to use this dye for textiles that come into contact with direct sunlight. For other markets, the dye may appear to be employable. For example, phycocyanine can be recommended on cotton and viscose for mattresses. After all, the paint process delivers very good results for sweating and contains only natural ingredients. Phycocyanine is also suitable for dyeing interior textiles. This is where we mainly think of furniture fabrics. Furthermore, the dyeing process can also be applied to fine clothing items where hand washing is the rule. On the other hand, it is also important to be able to offer the product at a reasonable price. The weak UV resistance combined with an expected higher cost made it impossible to develop a fully-fledged business case. However, market analyses were carried out during the project on the economic feasibility and logistics process in the use of spirulina/phycocyanine in the textile and food sector. The market analysis carried out led to the identification of key actors in the chain and identification of sensitivities in the market, including identification of barriers and conditions for the use of phycocyanin in the food sector. Since sustainability was central to the project, the extent to which one-thinking rose can be grown on residual streams, including that of spirulina cultivation, was also examined. Impure clones that consist of a mixture of species (Lemna minor and Lemna major) show the best growth performance and thus have the greatest potential for cultivation on residual waters. Residual water from aquaculture, spuiwater from greenhouse horticulture and the drainable water after manure processing are in pure form suitable for the cultivation of unicorn rose. Thin fraction, digestate and milk whey are inappropriate for the breeding of unicorn rose. For effluent after the microbiology of manure processing, pig urine and spirulina waste water, finding a suitable dilution is of great importance in order to successfully grow duck rose. In pure form, the conductivity and pH are too high, causing toxic conditions for single-drying roses. Therefore, growing duck roses on pure spirulinas pui is not possible. The project also looked at the applications of unicorn rose through lab and pilot scale tests. Applications of fresh duck rose in feed, food or refining to high-quality protein products are initially preferred to maximise the valorisation of single-thinking roses. The application of unicorn will be further explored in future research projects.

De commerciële teelt van microalgen is één van de mogelijke alternatieven als nieuwe toepassing in leegstaande kassen in Vlaanderen en Nederland. Eén van de meest gekende microalgen is spirulina, dat naast nuttige inhoudsstoffen een bron van fycocyanine (blauwe kleurstof) bevat. Binnen het project ‘De blauwe keten’ werd gekeken in welke mate spirulina en het afgeleide product fycocyanine kan toegepast worden als duurzame grondstof voor hoogwaardige toepassingen in verschillende sectoren. In ‘De blauwe keten’ werd getracht de ganse keten te benaderen. Enerzijds werd een protocol opgemaakt waarin de belangrijkste parameters beschreven staan die van belang zijn voor een succesvolle kweek van spirulina in onze grensregio. Hierbij werd veel aandacht besteed aan duurzaamheid, economische haalbaarheid en kwaliteit. Vervolgens werd er ook een protocol ontwikkeld voor het extraheren en opzuiveren van fycocyanine. De fycocyanine werd vervolgens toegepast voor het kleuren van papier, karton, coating, biocomposiet en textiel. Fycocyanine heeft als eiwit de eigenschap zowel temperatuur- als lichtgevoelig te zijn, waardoor grondig onderzoek noodzakelijk was alvorens deze natuurlijke kleurstof kon toegepast worden. Het stabiliseren van de blauwe kleurstof is na veel inspanningen en bijkomend onderzoek in beperkte mate gelukt, maar onvoldoende voor een breed toepassingsbereik. Bij papier, karton, coating en biocomposiet was het niet mogelijk om antwoord te vinden op de UV-gevoeligheid: na het kleuren van de materialen verkleurden ze na verloop van tijd grijs. Bij textiel, met name linnen en katoen, lukte het wel om deze materialen succesvol te kleuren met de blauwe kleurstof. Door de zwakke UV stabiliteit wordt aangeraden om deze kleurstof niet te gebruiken voor textiel dat met direct zonlicht in contact komt. Voor andere markten lijkt de kleurstof mogelijk inzetbaar. Zo kan fycocyanine aangeraden worden op katoen en viscose voor matrastijk. Het verfproces levert immers zeer goede resultaten voor zweetechtheden en bevat enkel natuurlijke bestanddelen. Ook voor het aanverven van interieurtextiel is fycocyanine geschikt. Daar denken we voornamelijk aan meubelstoffen. Voorts is het verfproces ook toe te passen op de fijne kledingartikelen waar handwas de regel is. Anderzijds is het ook belangrijk om het product tegen een redelijke prijs aan te kunnen bieden. De zwakke UV-resistentie, gecombineerd met een verwachte hogere kostprijs maakten dat er geen volwaardige businesscase kon worden uitgewerkt. Wel werden tijdens het project marktanalyses uitgevoerd rond de economische haalbaarheid en het logistieke proces bij het gebruik van spirulina/fycocyanine in de textiel- en voedingssector. De uitgevoerde marktanalyse leidde tot de identificatie van de belangrijkste spelers in de keten en identificatie van gevoeligheden in de markt, inclusief een identificatie van belemmeringen en voorwaarden voor het gebruik van fycocyanine in de voedingssector. Aangezien duurzaamheid centraal stond in het project, werd ook gekeken in welke mate eendenkroos kan geteeld worden op reststromen waaronder die van spirulinateelt. Onzuivere klonen eendenkroos die bestaan uit een mengsel van soorten (lemna minor en lemna major) vertonen de beste groeiprestaties en hebben dus het grootste potentieel voor de teelt op restwaters. Restwater van aquacultuur, spuiwater uit de glastuinbouw en het loosbare water na mestverwerking zijn in zuivere vorm geschikt voor de kweek van eendenkroos. Dunne fractie, digestaat en melkwei zijn dan weer ongeschikt voor de kweek van eendenkroos. Voor effluent na de microbiologie van de mestverwerking, varkensurine en spirulina afvalwater is het vinden van een geschikte verdunning van groot belang om succesvol eendenkroos te kunnen kweken. In zuivere vorm zijn de geleidbaarheid en de pH namelijk te hoog waardoor toxische omstandigheden voor eendenkroos ontstaan. Eendenkroos kweken op zuiver spirulinaspui is derhalve niet mogelijk. Het project heeft ook gekeken naar de toepassingen van eendenkroos via tests op lab- en pilootschaal. Toepassingen van vers eendenkroos in voeder, voeding of raffinage tot hoogwaardige eiwitproducten genieten in eerste instantie de voorkeur om op zijn beurt eendenkroos maximaal te valoriseren. De toepassing van eendenkroos zal in toekomstige onderzoeksprojecten nog verder onderzocht worden.
