Research by the European Commission shows that Flanders and the Netherlands could reuse roughly 10 times the amount of water they currently reuse. Water is an essential resource for the chemical industry in the seaports of Zeeland, Ghent and Antwerp. The (chemical) industry is an extremely important economic activity in these ports, but faces water problems to an increasing extent. This includes a dwindling supply of fresh water. Consequently, the key to more sustainable water use to a considerable extent is in the hands of the large-scale chemical industry in the port areas. The University of Ghent is therefore initiating Improved. This project aims to build up the infrastructure with which research is conducted into wastewater treatment from various water sources. The research infrastructure is being intensively tested by a number of big industrial players, which are joining in the project and will be applying technology at their own sites: BASF Antwerp, Yara Sluikskil BV, DOW Benelux BV and Evides Industriewater BV. The proposed purification plant must be state of the art, mobile and plug and play. This will enable examination of the dynamics of variable source water quality and its influence on the production process, so that companies can develop water management around their own sites. This has all been made possible by an integrated, cross-border approach in which the expertise of not only the chemical industry, process water suppliers and technology suppliers, but also the academic sector in Flanders and the Netherlands plays a major role.

Uit onderzoek van de Europese Commissie blijkt dat Vlaanderen en Nederland ongeveer 10 keer meer water zouden kunnen hergebruiken dan momenteel het geval is. Water is een cruciale grondstof voor de chemische industrie in de Zeeuwse, Gentse en Antwerpse zeehavens. De (chemische) industrie vertegenwoordigt een zeer belangrijke economische activiteit in deze havens, maar ze wordt steeds meer geconfronteerd met waterproblematiek zoals o.a. een dalende voorraad van zoet water. De sleutel tot een duurzamer watergebruik ligt dan ook in aanzienlijke mate bij de grootschalige chemische industrie in de havengebieden. Echter, de chemische industrie is vaak zeer conservatief ten opzichte van nieuwe waterbronnen, omdat er (nog) niet kan voorspeld worden hoe een andere waterkwaliteit een effect zal hebben op het chemisch proces (vb. bij stoomkraken of andere processen werkende met hoge druk stoom). Daarom werd IMPROVED geïnitieerd. Binnen het project wordt infrastructuur opgebouwd waarmee onderzoek verricht wordt naar proceswaterzuivering uit verschillende waterbronnen, én waarbij bovendien de invloed van deze waterkwaliteit op het chemisch proces meteen ook onderzocht wordt. Het project is geïnitieerd door Universiteit Gent, en de installatie is gebouwd door IEC N.V, met de hulp van Evides Industriewater bij de ontwikkeling. De zuiveringsinstallatie bevat state-of-the-art waterzuiveringstechnieken en meettechnieken voor vb. corrosie en microbiële groei, en is mobiel en plug and play. Zo kan de dynamiek van variabele bronwaterkwaliteit en de invloed daarvan op het chemisch proces onderzocht worden, zonder in het proces zelf in te grijpen, zodat bedrijven waterbeheer rond de eigen site beter en zonder risico kunnen ontwikkelen. Dit alles gebeurt door een geïntegreerde en grensoverschrijdende benadering waarbij zowel de expertise van de chemische industrie, proceswaterleveranciers, technologieleveranciers, als de academische sector uit Vlaanderen en Nederland een belangrijke rol spelen. Tijdens het project werd deze infrastrustuur ingezet bij Yara, BASF Antwerpen en Dow Benelux BV, telkens 6 maanden op elke locatie. Bij elk van deze partners werden zeer waardevolle resultaten behaald (terug te vinden op de projectwebsite www.improvedwater.eu) die door de verschillende partners gebruikt zullen worden om hun waterhuishouding in de toekomst duurzamer en efficiënter te maken.

The (chemical) industry represents a very important economic activity in these ports, but it is increasingly confronted with water problems such as a declining supply of fresh water. The key to more sustainable water use is therefore to a significant extent the large-scale chemical industry in the port areas. However, the chemical industry is often very conservative compared to new water sources, because it cannot (yet) be predicted how another water quality will have an effect on the chemical process (e.g. steam cracks or other high-pressure steam processes). Therefore, IMPROVED was initiated. Within the project, infrastructure will be built with which research is carried out on process water treatment from different water sources, as well as the impact of this water quality on the chemical process. The project was initiated by Ghent University, and the installation was built by IEC N.V, with the help of Evides Industriewater in the development. The treatment plant contains state-of-the-art water purification techniques and measurement techniques for e.g. corrosion and microbial growth, and is mobile and plug and play. For example, the dynamics of variable spring water quality and its impact on the chemical process can be investigated, without intervening in the process itself, so that companies can develop water management around their own site better and without risk. All this is done through an integrated and cross-border approach in which the expertise of the chemical industry, process water suppliers, technology suppliers, as well as the academic sector from Flanders and the Netherlands play an important role. During the project, this infrastructure was deployed at Yara, BASF Antwerp and Dow Benelux BV, each 6 months at each location. For each of these partners, very valuable results were achieved (to be found on the project website www.improvedwater.eu) which will be used by the different partners to make their water management more sustainable and efficient in the future.
