Hart- en vaatziekten zijn doodsoorzaak nummer één in de Europese Unie en kosten de Europese gemeenschap € 196 miljard per jaar. Hiervan wordt € 106 miljard uitgegeven aan gezondheidszorg, inclusief diagnostiek en behandeling van patiënten. De snelle vergrijzing en ontgroening in de grensregio schept de verwachting dat hart- en vaatziekten een sterk stijgende negatieve impact zullen hebben op onze maatschappij. Een groot deel van mensen met hart- en vaatziekten vertoont tijdens de ontwikkeling van de ziekte geen serieuze symptomen en is dus ook niet onder behandeling. Betere en vroegere identificatie van deze mensen met een verhoogd gezondheidsrisico is dan ook zeer gewenst. Ook voor reeds geïdentificeerde patiënten is goede diagnostiek essentieel om de therapie te verfijnen en zo minder complicaties of bijwerkingen te hebben. ‘TTD’ richt zich daarom op de ontwikkeling van een diagnostische kit. Deze vorm van gepersonaliseerde geneeskunde wordt gezien als dé weg naar efficiëntere cardiovasculaire gezondheidszorg, breed inzetbaar en met minder bijkomende gezondheidsschade en kosten voor het individu en de maatschappij. Deze inspanningen zullen op termijn niet alleen een positief effect kunnen hebben op de gezondheidszorg, maar spelen tevens in op de behoeften en de vraag van het bedrijfsleven en zorgaanbieders.

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer in the European Union and cost the European community € 196 billion per year. € 106 billion of this budget is spent on health care, including diagnosis and treatment of patients. The rapidly ageing population in the border region creates the expectation that cardiovascular disease will have a strongly increasing negative impact on our society. A large proportion of people with cardiovascular disease shows no serious symptoms during the development of the disease, and is therefore not under treatment. Better and earlier identification of these individuals with an increased health risk is highly desirable. Also, a proper diagnosis for already identified patients is essential to refine the therapy, and to have fewer side effects or complications. ‘TTD’ therefore focuses on the development of a diagnostic kit. This form of personalized health care is seen as the way to more efficient cardiovascular health care, versatile and with fewer additional health damages and costs to the individual and society. These efforts will eventually not only have a positive effect on health care, but also respond to the needs and demands of business and health care providers.

Hart- en vaatziekten zijn doodsoorzaak nummer één in Europa (1.9 miljoen mensen per jaar, 2012) en kosten de Europese gemeenschap €196 miljard per jaar. Hiervan wordt €106 miljard uitgegeven aan gezondheidszorg inclusief diagnostiek en behandeling. De snelle vergrijzing en ontgroening in de grensregio, en in het bijzonder voor beide Limburgen, schept de verwachting dat hart- en vaatziekten een sterk groeiende negatieve impact hebben op onze maatschappij. Identificatie en adequate behandeling van mensen met verhoogd risico is de primaire doelstelling ter preventie van reductie van de kwaliteit van leven en een economisch infarct van de gezondheidszorg. Inschatting van het risico op hart/vaatziekten wordt nu op grond van leeftijd, geslacht, bloeddruk, cholesterolwaarden en gewicht gedaan. Deze risico-indicatoren hebben beperkte waarde voor persoonlijke diagnostiek en therapie, en geven alleen informatie over algemene risico’s. Hoewel binnen de medische wetenschap veel kennis aanwezig is over de mechanismen van hart- en vaatlijden, is de toepassing hiervan in de diagnostiek minimaal. Trans Tech Diagnostics (TTD) zet derhalve in op de vertaalslag van biomedische innovatie mbt hart- en vaatziekten naar de praktijk. TTD publieke partners UM, UHasselt en VITO, en de private technologische partner TSG InnoteQ, hebben succesvol gewerkt aan het grensoverschrijdend bundelen en versterken van biomedische en wetenschappelijke samenwerking op het vlak van technologische kennis en infrastructuur. De TTD samenwerking heeft geleid tot de identificatie en realisatie van technologische speerpunten. Met project partners light (PPL) Communicatie en PR DSP Valley en Bonné+Jan zijn co-creatietrajecten gestart om de meest geschikte bedrijven uit de grensregio te betrekken in de doorontwikkeling van deze nieuwe technologieën. De hieruit ontstane eerste PPL-samenwerkingen met KMO/MKB-bedrijven (Tenco DDM, PimBio) is succesvol verlopen en heeft tot versnelling in de vertaling van innovatie naar de praktijk geleid. Hierna volgden nog Fox Biosystems, Black Drop Biodrucker GmbH en De Keuze Architecten als PPL waarmee de TTD-technologie maximaal vertaald werd naar de praktijk. Dankzij deze grensregionale samenwerkingen werden vier Demonstrators (TRL6, industrieel onderzoek) gerealiseerd en tonen de partners van TTD hoe grensregionale technologische en innovatieve samenwerking kan bijdragen tot de realisatie van beter onderzoek, diagnostiek en therapie. Deze Demonstrators zijn IDA – een handzaam apparaat geschikt voor het uitvoeren van gepersonaliseerde bio-assays om de mate van ontsteking van een bloedvatmodel te bepalen. White Box – een benchtopapparaat geschikt voor het snel en betrouwbaar uitmeten van cardiovasculaire biomerkers (extracellulaire vesikels). Lab-on-a-Chip – kleine, specifieke dragers voor biologisch materiaal (cellen) waarmee specifieke parameters kunnen worden uitgemeten, bijvoorbeeld in de IDA. Chatbot – een online ondersteuning om gepersonaliseerde input aan het cardiovasculaire behandelingsproces te geven. De technologische ontwikkeling en versterking van de onderzoeksinfrastructuur -gerealiseerd mede dankzij investeringen van Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland, de Europese commissie en onze regionale overheden- zijn verankerd in het grensoverschrijdende Open Technologische Platform, dat op termijn een positief effect zal hebben op de R&D mbt gezondheidszorg en publiek-private innovatie. Met deze samenwerking kunnen organisaties hun concurrentiepositie (topreferente zorg, innovatieve producten, betere opleidingen) versterken en kunnen studenten en kennismedewerkers in onze grensregio hoogwaardige kennis en technologische knowhow opdoen om zo hun positie op de arbeidsmarkt te versterken.

The rapid ageing and degreening in the border region, and in particular for both Limburgs, creates the expectation that cardiovascular diseases have a strongly growing negative impact on our society. Identification and adequate treatment of people at risk is the primary objective of preventing the reduction of quality of life and an economic infarction of health care. Estimation of the risk of heart/vascular disease is now done based on age, gender, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and weight. These risk indicators have limited value for personal diagnostics and therapy, and only provide information on general risks. Although there is a lot of knowledge in medical science about the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, their application in diagnostics is minimal. Trans Tech Diagnostics (TTD) therefore focuses on the translation of biomedical innovation in cardiovascular disease into practice. TTD public partners UM, UHasselt and VITO, and the private technology partner TSG InnoteQ, have successfully worked on the cross-border pooling and strengthening of biomedical and scientific cooperation in the field of technological knowledge and infrastructure. The TTD cooperation has led to the identification and realisation of technological spearheads. With project partners light (PPL) Communication and PR DSP Valley and Bonné+Jan, co-creation projects have been launched to involve the most suitable companies from the border region in the further development of these new technologies. The resulting first PPL collaborations with SMEs (Tenco DDM, PimBio) have been successful and accelerated in the translation of innovation into practice. Next followed Fox Biosystems, Black Drop Biodrucker GmbH and De Keuze Architecten as PPL, which fully translated TTD technology into practice. Thanks to these border regional collaborations, four demonstrators (TRL6, industrial research) were realised and TTD partners show how border-regional technological and innovative cooperation can contribute to the realisation of better research, diagnostics and therapy. These demonstrators are: IDA — a handy device capable of performing personalised bioassays to determine the degree of inflammation of a blood vessel model. White Box — a benchtop device suitable for the rapid and reliable measurement of cardiovascular biomarkers (extracellular vesicles). Lab-on-a-Chip — small, specific carriers for biological material (cells) with which specific parameters can be measured, for example in the IDA. Chatbot — an online support to give personalised input to the cardiovascular treatment process. The technological development and strengthening of research infrastructures — including through investments from Interreg Flanders-Netherlands, the European Commission and our regional authorities — are anchored in the cross-border Open Technological Platform, which will in the long run have a positive impact on the R & D in healthcare and public-private innovation. Through this collaboration, organisations can strengthen their competitive position (top-referente care, innovative products, better education) and enable students and knowledge workers in our border region to gain high-quality knowledge and technological know-how in order to strengthen their position in the labour market.
