Starters worden vaak geconfronteerd met de zogenaamde valley of death, ook in de grensregio. Over een innovatief product of dienst beschikken betekent niet dat je erin slaagt om dat snel en efficiënt in de markt te zetten. De (kwetsbare) starter is vaak onervaren in netwerken en heeft niet voldoende middelen ter beschikking. Link2innovate moedigt samenwerking aan tussen technostarters en bedrijven aan weerszijden van de grens. De focus ligt op starters die werkzaam zijn met sleuteltechnologieën zoals o.a. micro- en nano-elektronica, fotonica, nanotechnologie of geavanceerde fabricatiesystemen en –processen. Experimentele ontwikkeling zoals prototyping, demonstraties of pilotontwikkeling zorgt ervoor dat het product of dienst op die manier voldoende zuurstof krijgt om succesvol te evolueren. Daarnaast kunnen de starters beroep doen op coaching zodat hun product of dienst efficiënt en vlot in de markt gezet kan worden. Eerder toonde het project ‘Incubatorennetwerk(t)’ uit Interreg IV aan dat de valorisatie van onderzoeksresultaten gebaat is bij grensoverschrijdende samenwerking tussen universitaire onderzoeksgroepen om tot spin-off creatie te komen of om bestaande universitaire spin-offs sneller te laten groeien. Dit principe wordt verder toegepast bij Link2innovate.

Start-ups are often confronted with the 'valley of death', even in the border region. Having an innovative product or service does not necessarily mean you will succeed in marketing it rapidly and efficiently. (Vulnerable) start-ups are often inexperienced at networking and do not have sufficient resources. Link2innovate encourages collaboration between techno starters and companies on both sides of the border. The focus lies on start-ups that work with key technologies such as micro and nano electronics, photonics, nanotechnology and advanced manufacturing systems and processes. Experimental development such as prototyping, demonstrations and pilot development ensures that the product or service has enough breathing space to evolve successfully. In addition, start-ups can request coaching to ensure that the product or service can be rapidly and efficiently marketed. Previously, the Incubatorennetwerk(t) project from Interreg IV demonstrated that the valorisation of research results benefits from cross-border collaboration between university research groups to achieve spin-off creation or allow existing university spin-offs to grow more quickly. This principle is being further applied in Link2innovate.

Achievements (NL):

Link2Innovate creëerde samenwerking tussen technostarters en bedrijven aan weerszijden van de grens om het product markt-gereed te maken. Jonge bedrijven worden vaak geconfronteerd met de zogenaamde valley of death, ook in de grensregio. Over een innovatief product of dienst beschikken, betekent niet dat je erin slaagt om dat snel en efficiënt in de markt te zetten. Jonge bedrijven zijn vaak onervaren in netwerken en hebben niet voldoende middelen ter beschikking. Link2Innovate initieerde en stimuleerde samenwerkingen tussen jonge technologiebedrijven en gevestigde organisaties uit het buurland. De focus lag op jonge technologiebedrijven die werkzaam zijn met sleuteltechnologieën zoals o.a. micro- en nano-elektronica, fotonica, nanotechnologie, industriële biotechnologie of geavanceerde fabricatiesystemen en –processen. Eerder toonde het project ‘Incubatorennetwerk(t)’ uit Interreg IV aan dat de valorisatie van onderzoeksresultaten gebaat is bij grensoverschrijdende samenwerking tussen universitaire onderzoeksgroepen om tot spin-off creatie te komen of om bestaande universitaire spin-offs sneller te laten groeien. Dit principe werd verder toegepast bij Link2Innovate. Wat hield de hulp in? Zeven Nederlandse en Vlaamse projectpartners (starterscentra en incubatoren) hielpen enerzijds jonge technologiebedrijven aan launching customers, en anderzijds grote bedrijven aan innovaties door jonge technologiebedrijven. De startende ondernemingen ontvingen subsidie voor experimentele ontwikkeling van hun innovatie zoals prototyping, demonstraties of pilotontwikkeling. Daarnaast konden beide bedrijven beroep doen op coaching zodat de innovatie efficiënt en vlot in de markt gezet kon worden. Gerealiseerde samenwerkingen De 27 samenwerkingstrajecten - op een enkele uitzondering na - resulteerden in aanzienlijke stappen voorwaarts voor de technostarters met het oog op verdere ontwikkeling en concrete samenwerking. Link2Innovate ondersteunde 25 jonge technologiebedrijven in hun 27 samenwerkingstrajecten met een partnerorganisatie in het buurland. Voor al deze trajecten werd een plan van aanpak opgesteld en een externe businesscoach aangesteld. Het gros van de samenwerkingstrajecten kwam pas de laatste zes maanden tot voltooiing. De resultaten die al rijp waren om wereldkundig gemaakt te worden, werden gepresenteerd op het slot-event Where Technology Meets cross-border demands dat op 27 maart 2019 werd georganiseerd in het Technologiehuis van de Kempen in Geel. Ook een verslagje en wat sfeerbeelden over het slot-event zijn op die website terug te vinden. Conclusie is dat de 27 samenwerkingstrajecten op een enkele uitzondering na geresulteerd hebben in aanzienlijke stappen voorwaarts voor de technostarters met het oog op verdere ontwikkeling en concrete samenwerking. Het feit dat de samenwerkingstrajecten innovatief en experimenteel waren, brengt natuurlijk ook met zich mee dat de echte economische baten pas binnen afzienbare tijd tot uiting zullen komen. Toch konden we uit de bevraging van de betrokken bedrijven afleiden dat het merendeel van de samenwerkingstrajecten zal leiden tot verdere samenwerking in de toekomst. In een aantal gevallen werd er zelfs in dit hele vroege stadium al meer omzet gecreërd en nieuwe klanten gevonden.

Young companies are often confronted with the so-called valley of death, also in the border region. Having an innovative product or service doesn't mean you manage to put it on the market quickly and efficiently. Young companies are often inexperienced in networks and do not have sufficient resources at their disposal. Link2Innovate initiated and stimulated collaborations between young technology companies and established organisations from neighbouring countries. The focus was on young technology companies working with key technologies such as micro- and nanoelectronics, photonics, nanotechnology, industrial biotechnology or advanced manufacturing systems and processes. Previously, the Interreg IV Incubator Network (t) project showed that the valorisation of research results benefits from cross-border collaboration between university research groups to achieve spin-off creation or to accelerate the growth of existing university spin-offs. This principle was further applied at Link2Innovate. What was the help? Seven Dutch and Flemish project partners (starter centres and incubators) helped young technology companies to launch customers, and large companies to innovate by young technology companies. The start-ups received a grant for experimental development of their innovation such as prototyping, demonstrations or pilot development. In addition, both companies could call on coaching so that the innovation could be put into the market efficiently and smoothly. Realised collaborations The 27 collaborative pathways — with a few exceptions — resulted in significant steps forward for techno starters with a view to further development and concrete cooperation. Link2Innovate supported 25 young technology companies in their 27 collaborative projects with a partner organisation in the neighbouring country. For all these projects, a plan of action was drawn up and an external business coach was appointed. The majority of the cooperation programmes have only been completed in the last six months. The results that were already ripe to become world famous were presented at the closing event Where Technology Meets cross-border demands organised on 27 March 2019 at the Technology House of the Kempen in Geel. A report and some atmospheric images about the final event can also be found on that website. It is concluded that, with a single exception, the 27 collaborative pathways have resulted in significant steps forward for techno starters with a view to further development and concrete cooperation. Of course, the fact that the cooperation processes were innovative and experimental also means that the real economic benefits will only be reflected in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, we were able to infer from the survey of the companies involved that the majority of the cooperation processes will lead to further cooperation in the future. In a number of cases, even at this very early stage, more sales were created and new customers were found.
