In de landbouw nam de productie per hectare enorm toe in de laatste decennia. Dat grote succes kent echter een keerzijde: het intensieve gebruik van de landbouwgrond zorgde voor een achteruitgang van de bodemkwaliteit. Deze teloorgang werd onder meer veroorzaakt door gebruik van zware machines, kunstmest en gewasbeschermingsmiddelen. Gevolg: de bodem verloor zijn bufferende werking. 'Leve(n) de Bodem’ wil zo’n 200 landbouwers aanmoedigen om aan herstel en verbetering te doen. Om de negatieve spiraal te doorbreken is een transitie in denken en doen van landbouwondernemers noodzakelijk. Dankzij nauwe samenwerking tussen o.a. Proefcentra Inagro, PCG, de Rusthoeve en de Hooibeekhoeve als kennis- en expertisecentrum voor land- en tuinbouw worden vernieuwende technieken en kennis ingezet. Zo wordt er in functie van de optimalisatie van de bodemgezondheid bijvoorbeeld geëxperimenteerd met plaatsspecifiek bekalken om een optimale bodem-pH te handhaven en kan de grond ‘ontsmet’ worden dankzij groenbemesters (biofumigatie). De deelnemende landbouwers implementeren de maatregelen en via een bodemscan wordt de effectiviteit hiervan gemonitord. Deze scan geeft een beeld van de bodemkwaliteit zodat er gestreefd kan worden naar een coherente samenhang tussen bodemchemie, bodembiologie en bodemfysica.

In recent decades, agricultural production per hectare has increased enormously. There is another side to that big success, though. Intensive use of agricultural ground has resulted in deteriorated soil quality. This decline has been caused by the use of heavy machinery, artificial fertilisers and pesticides, for example. Consequently, the soil has lost its buffering function. Leve(n) de Bodem aims to encourage some 200 farmers to engage in recovery and improvement. Halting the negative spiral requires a transition in the way farmers think and act. Thanks to close cooperation between parties such as Proefcentra Inagro, PCG, de Rusthoeve and de Hooibeekhoeve, as knowledge and expertise centres for agriculture and horticulture, innovative techniques and knowledge are being applied. To optimise soil health, for instance, localised experiments are being conducted, adding lime to ensure an optimal soil pH and decontaminating the soil with green manure (biofumigation). Participating farmers implement the measures and a soil scan is made to monitor their effectiveness. This scan gives a picture of the soil quality so a coherent link can be established between soil chemistry, soil biology and soil physics.

Om het tij te keren is een transitie in denken en doen van landbouwondernemers noodzakelijk en moet er ook nagedacht worden over hoe de bescherming van de bodem kan gewaardeerd worden. Leve(n) de Bodem bestaat uit drie belangrijke pijlers: begeleiding door kennispendelaars, leren van elkaar in ondernemersgroepen en demonstraties van nieuwe technieken. Zo werd bodemIDee ontwikkeld dat de chemische, fysische en biologische bodemkwaliteit van een perceel in kaart brengt aan de hand van een aantal indicatoren en dit grafisch weergeeft in een sterdiagram. Samen met de kennispendelaar gaan een 200-tal landbouwers aan de slag om bodemIDee toe te passen op één à twee percelen. Waar relevant wordt een aanpak voor herstel en verbetering afgesproken. De toepassing wordt in de loop van het project verfijnd en bijgesteld. Naast deze individuele begeleiding werden ook meer dan 20 regionale ondernemersgroepen gevormd, waarin landbouwers en loonwerkers samenkomen rond een bodemgerelateerd thema. Per thema werden verschillende bijeenkomsten georganiseerd om kennis en ervaringen uit te wisselen tussen onderzoekers en ondernemers, maar ook tussen ondernemers onderling. Op het slotevent namen de Vlaamse en Nederlandse ondernemers kennis van de projectresultaten, leerden ze de ontwikkelde tools kennen en hadden ze volop gelegenheid om grensoverschrijdend kennis uit te wisselen. 'Organische stof en bodemleven' vormde bijvoorbeeld een thema dat in meerdere groepen aan bod kwam. Ten slotte organiseerden de projectpartners doorheen het project ook heel wat demonstraties. Hierbij werden bijvoorbeeld methodes gedemonstreerd om organische stof op te bouwen in de bodem (stro, houtsnippers, potgrond, bokashi, stalmest, groenbedekkers). Ook verschillende mogelijkheden van bodembewerking kwamen aan bod, gerelateerd aan het belang van de structuur van het zaaibed. Andere demonstraties gaan over het vermijden van verdichting door onder meer het vaste rijpadensysteem en nieuwe evoluties in de precisielandbouw. Dankzij de samenwerking tussen de Nederlandse (ZLTO, Rusthoeve) en de Vlaamse partners (Inagro, PCG, Hooibeekhoeve, PIBOcampus, Provincie Vlaams-Brabant en de Vlaamse Overheid, dienst VPO - Vlaams Planbureau voor Omgeving) en via de gezamenlijke website, nieuwsbrief en facebookpagina kwam de kennis maximaal bij de doelgroep terecht. Via de website levendebodem.eu blijven de in het project ontwikkelde tools beschikbaar voor wie actief aan de slag wil rond bodemverbetering. Begeleiding door de projectpartners is steeds beschikbaar.

Achievements (EN):

To turn the tide, a transition in the thinking and actions of agricultural entrepreneurs is necessary and consideration must also be given to how the protection of the soil can be valued. Live(n) the Soil consists of three important pillars: guidance by knowledge commuters, learning from each other in entrepreneurial groups and demonstrations of new techniques. Soil IDee was developed, which maps the chemical, physical and biological soil quality of a plot using a number of indicators and displays this graphically in a star diagram. Together with the knowledge commuter, about 200 farmers will work to apply soil IDee to one or two plots. Where relevant, an approach for recovery and improvement is agreed. The application is refined and adjusted during the course of the project. In addition to this individual guidance, more than 20 regional entrepreneurial groups were also formed, in which farmers and contractors come together around a soil-related theme. Various meetings were organized per theme to exchange knowledge and experiences between researchers and entrepreneurs, but also between entrepreneurs themselves. At the closing event, the Flemish and Dutch entrepreneurs took note of the project results, got to know the developed tools and had plenty of opportunity to exchange knowledge across borders. 'Organic matter and soil life', for example, was a theme that was discussed in several groups. Finally, the project partners also organized many demonstrations throughout the project. For example, methods were demonstrated to build organic matter in the soil (straw, wood chips, potting soil, bokashi, farmyard manure, green cover crops). Various soil cultivation options were also discussed, related to the importance of the structure of the seedbed. Other demonstrations focus on avoiding compaction through, among other things, the fixed tramline system and new developments in precision agriculture. Thanks to the collaboration between the Dutch (ZLTO, Rusthoeve) and the Flemish partners (Inagro, PCG, Hooibeekhoeve, PIBOcampus, Province of Flemish Brabant and the Flemish Government, VPO service - Flemish Environmental Planning Agency) and through the joint website, newsletter and Facebook page the knowledge reached the target group as much as possible. The tools developed in the project remain available via the website wonengrond.eu for those who want to actively work on soil improvement. Guidance from the project partners is always available.
