Hydrogen is globally considered to be a major opportunity for achieving a carbon-free economy. It is highly promising, as it is a clean, emission-free fuel. Hydrogen applications within transport present many new prospects: a hydrogen vehicle is an electric vehicle, but instead of batteries, hydrogen is transformed into electricity. At a European level, however, an extra boost is needed to elevate the feasibility to a considerably higher level: technological breakthroughs are needed in order to compete with current, traditional fuel vehicles. The previous Interreg-project ‘Waterstofregio’ (Hydrogen Region) (2009-2013) showed that, in the Flanders-Southern Netherlands region, collaboration between a number of unique technology players, such as Colruyt Group and Beukers Autoschade BV were able to realise highly innovative projects, such as a 1 Megawatt power plant, a new bus concept, a filling station in Flanders for forklift trucks, a filling station in the Netherlands for buses and cars, a refuse lorry and a sloop; all of which run on hydrogen. The project also devoted attention to training modules, through collaboration between higher educational establishments in the border region. This has led to a solid position in Europe as one of the top regions in the transition from traditional fuels to hydrogen. ‘Waterstofregio 2.0, which receives a subsidy of almost 6 million euros through Interreg Flanders-Netherlands, focuses on improving and demonstrating various applications. With the consent of Waterstofregio 2.0, coordinated by WaterstofNet, the collaboration between Flanders and the Netherlands is being further reinforced: Colruyt Group and Beukers Autoschade BV are committing themselves again, together with new partners such as VDL and PitPoint. With the approval of Waterstofregio, again coordinated by WaterstofNet, this collaboration between Flanders and the Netherlands is being further reinforced as additional projects are realised by and for companies in the region. Expansion of the existing hydrogen filling station on the Automotive Campus in Helmond to serve even more demonstration applications Development and deployment of a mobile hydrogen filling station to facilitate demonstrations at various places in the region Zero emission applications: Demonstration of Europe's biggest fleet of 75 forklift trucks, which will use indoor hydrogen tanks Development and demonstration of the first big (forty tonne) hydrogen truck in Europe The demonstration programme for refuse lorries, started in the previous Interreg project, will be continued in this collaboration between Flanders and the Southern Netherlands To further expand the existing ecosystem comprising technology developers and end-users, we are collaborating with regional development companies and network organisations.

Waterstof wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als een belangrijke mogelijkheid om tot een koolstofvrije economie te komen. Het is erg beloftevol omdat het een schone, emmissievrije brandstof is. Waterstoftoepassingen binnen transport bieden veel nieuwe perspectieven: een waterstofvoertuig is een elektrisch voertuig, maar in de plaats van batterijen wordt waterstof omgezet naar elektriciteit. Op Europees niveau kan er echter nog een tandje bijgestoken worden om de haalbaarheid naar een aanzienlijk hoger niveau te tillen: technologische doorbraken zijn nodig om competitief te worden met de huidige en traditionele brandstofwagen. Uit het voorgaande Interreg-project ‘Waterstofregio’ (2009-2013) bleek dat in de regio Vlaanderen - Zuid-Nederland een aantal unieke technologiespelers zoals onder andere Colruyt Group en Beukers Autoschade BV door samenwerking bijzonder sterke innovatieve projecten konden realiseren, zoals een 1 Megawatt powerplant, een nieuw bus concept, een tankstation in Vlaanderen voor heftrucks, een tankstation in Nederland voor bussen en auto’s, een vuilniswagen en een sloep, allemaal op waterstof. Het project besteedde eveneens aandacht aan opleidingsmodules via een samenwerking tussen hogescholen in de grensregio. Dit leidde tot een stevige positie in Europa als één van de topregio's op vlak van de overstap van traditionele brandstoffen naar waterstof. ‘Waterstofregio 2.0’, dat via Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland bijna 6 miljoen euro subsidie ontvangt, richt zich op het verbeteren en tonen van de verschillende toepassingen. Met de goedkeuring van ‘Waterstofregio 2.0’, gecoördineerd door WaterstofNet, wordt de samenwerking tussen Vlaanderen en Nederland verder verstrekt: Colruyt Group en Beukers Autoschade BV engageren zich opnieuw, samen met nieuwe partners zoals VDL en PitPoint. Met de goedkeuring van Waterstofregio 2.0, opnieuw gecoördineerd door WaterstofNet, wordt deze samenwerking tussen Vlaanderen en Nederland verder verstrekt door bijkomende projecten te realiseren door en voor bedrijven in de regio. Ook krijgen diverse eindgebruikers zoals burgers, private sector en overheden de mogelijkheid toepassingen te testen en zo op een laagdrempelige ‘hands-on’ manier kennis te kunnen opdoen. Realisaties op vlak van waterstofinfrastructuur: Ontwikkeling en bouw van twee unieke waterstofstankstations, waar ter plaatse uit groene elektriciteit waterstof geproduceerd zal worden: in Wilrijk wordt het tankstation gekoppeld aan een verbrandingsoven, in Breda wordt het tankstation gekoppeld aan de zonne-energie Uitbreiding van het bestaande waterstofstankstation op de Automotive Campus in Helmond om nog meer demonstratietoepassingen te kunnen bedienen Ontwikkeling en inzet van een mobiel waterstofstankstation om demonstraties op verschillende plaatsen in de regio te faciliteren Realisaties op vlak van zero-emissie toepassingen: Demonstratie van Europa’s grootste vloot van 75 heftrucks, waarbij gebruik gemaakt zal worden van ‘indoor’ waterstof tanken Ontwikkeling en demonstratie van de eerste grote (40 ton) vrachtwagen op waterstof in Europa Het demonstratieprogramma voor vuilniswagens, opgestart in het vorige Interreg-project, zal in dit project Vlaanderen en Zuid-Nederland verder gezet worden Om het bestaande ecosysteem, bestaande uit technologie-ontwikkelaars en eindgebruikers, verder uit te bouwen wordt samengewerkt met regionale ontwikkelingsmaatschappijen en netwerkorganisaties.

Achievements (EN):

Europe aims to drastically reduce greenhouse gases by 2050 (80 %). Hydrogen (H2) can play an important role in this, both in terms of zero-emission transport and energy storage. Flanders and the Netherlands host a number of unique companies in the hydrogen value chain, both technology suppliers and end users. Hydrogenregio 2.0 brings these companies together and realises a number of unique demonstration projects that contribute to a greener climate. In 2018, the hydrogen filling station on the Automotive Campus was expanded in terms of electrolysis capacity and storage, allowing multiple users to refuel in a row since 5 April. Follow-up assignment within Interreg was to make the hydrogen filling station in Helmond public accessible and also suitable for the general public. A location for this was found in Veldhoven, for which the final permit was obtained in October 2021. The gas station has been transferred from HydrogenNet to TotalEnergies. As a small organisation, HydrogenNet is not well equipped enough to guarantee the necessary technical updates and services to the customers. With this transfer to TotalEnergies, the continuity of the hydrogen filling station is guaranteed. The gas station was upgraded and officially opened on 23 June. At Colruyt Group in Halle, the H2 gas station built in the first Interreg project, thanks to WR 2.0, is now also publicly accessible to cars (since October 2018) The hydrogen filling stations in Breda and Wilrijk have been realised. The hydrogen filling station in Breda was opened on 6 April 2022, the hydrogen filling station in Wilrijk on Monday 30 May 2022. Colruyt Group also scaled up its fleet of forklift trucks and installed indoor dispensers for this purpose. Unique is the realised mobile petrol station, which can be used in various places to offer companies thinking of hydrogen applications a first experience. Several successful demos have been completed. the mobile station works as a backup during technical upgrade of Total’s hydrogen fuel station, with a garbage truck in Breda, with Toyota at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, with demonstrations with forklifts at Volvo Gent and a Terberg at AET and at PSA in the port of Antwerp. In 2019, a regional brand-independent service and maintenance service for various fuel cell road vehicles was also launched at E-Trucks Europe so that hydrogen vehicles can now be repaired. And as a showpiece, there was the European first: the heavy-duty tractor trailer combination developed and built by VDL on H2. It was presented to the press and the public in December 2020. Partly because of this truck, Colruyt Group has won the Green Truck Award 2021, which has also attracted more attention to this realisation. Based on the experience with Hydrogen Region for the construction of hydrogen refuelling stations, regional workshops were organised. There was considerable interest in these workshops and, in particular, new players active in the world of hydrogen refuelling stations have become familiar with the licensing procedures very efficiently through these workshops. Furthermore, we noticed that sustainable hydrogen and its possible applications are not yet well known to the general public, hence an animation video has been realised that explains in a very simple, clear and educational way how green hydrogen contributes to the sustainable world of tomorrow. This animation video is widely distributed via social media and partners and is also on Klascement (can be used by teachers as ‘teaching material’. And has also been used by the VRT in the ‘De Markt’ programme to explain to the viewers exactly what hydrogen is and what it can be used for. Strong Hydrogen Region! Together with the realised hydrogen projects from the previous Interreg project, these projects are a source of knowledge and experience, allowing further steps to be taken. The technology developed is now being exported to other regions in Europe. More than 12 years of Hydrogen Region teaches that structural cross-border cooperation between Flanders and the Netherlands works! Thanks to the realisations but also thanks to the organised provincial workshops and networking efforts, the hydrogen ecosystem has been further expanded to more than 125 companies. The region is on the hydrogen map.

Europa ambieert een drastische reductie van broeikasgassen tegen 2050 (vermindering met 80 %). Waterstof (H2) kan hierbij een belangrijke rol spelen, zowel op vlak van zero-emissie transport als op vlak van energieopslag. Vlaanderen en Nederland herbergen een aantal unieke bedrijven in de waardeketen rond waterstof, zowel technologieleveranciers als eindgebruikers. Waterstofregio 2.0 brengt deze bedrijven samen en realiseert een aantal unieke demonstratieprojecten, die bijdragen aan een groener klimaat. In 2018 is het waterstoftankstation op de Automotive Campus uitgebreid op vlak van elektrolysecapaciteit en opslag, zodat sinds 5 april meerdere gebruikers achter elkaar kunnen tanken. Vervolgopdracht binnen Interreg was het waterstoftankstation in Helmond publiek toegankelijk te maken en ook geschikt te maken voor het grote publiek. Hiervoor is een locatie gevonden in Veldhoven, waarvoor in oktober 2021 de definitieve vergunning is verkregen. Het tankstation is overgedragen van WaterstofNet naar TotalEnergies. WaterstofNet is als kleine organisatie niet goed genoeg uitgerust om de nodige technische updates en services naar de klanten te garanderen. Met deze overdracht aan TotalEnergies is de continuiteit van het waterstoftankstation gegarandeerd. Het tankstation werd geüpgraded en is op 23 juni officieel geopend. Bij Colruyt Group in Halle is het in het eerste Interreg project gebouwde H2 tankstation, dankzij WR 2.0, nu ook publiek toegankelijk voor auto’s (sinds oktober 2018) De waterstoftankstations in Breda en Wilrijk zijn gerealiseerd. Het waterstoftankstation in Breda is geopend op 6 april 2022, het waterstoftankstation in Wilrijk op maandag 30 mei 2022. Colruyt Group schaalde ook haar vloot van heftrucks op en heeft hiervoor indoor dispensers geïnstalleerd. Uniek is bovendien het gerealiseerde mobiele tankstation, dat op verschillende plaatsen kan worden ingezet om bedrijven die denken aan waterstoftoepassingen een eerste ervaring aan te bieden. Verschillende succesvolle demo’s zijn achter de rug. het mobiel station werkt gebruikt als back-up tijdens technische upgrade van het waterstoftankstation van Total, met een vuilniswagen in Breda, met Toyota op de Automotive Campus in Helmond, met demonstraties met heftrucks bij Volvo Gent en een Terberg bij AET en bij PSA in de Antwerpse haven. Ook is in 2019 een regionaal merkonafhankelijke service- en onderhoudsdienst voor diverse brandstofcel wegvoertuigen opgestart bij E-Trucks Europe zodat er voortaan waterstofvoertuigen hersteld kunnen worden. En als paradepaardje was er de Europese primeur: de door VDL ontwikkelde en gebouwde heavy-duty trekker trailer combinatie op H2. Deze werd in december 2020 voorgesteld aan pers en publiek. Mede door deze truck heeft Colruyt Group de Green Truck Award 2021 gewonnen, waardoor deze realisatie ook meer in de aandacht is gekomen. Op basis van de ervaringen met Waterstofregio voor de bouw van waterstoftankstations zijn regionale workshops georganiseerd. Er was ruime belangstelling voor deze workshops en vooral nieuwe spelers actief in de wereld van de waterstoftankstations zijn via deze workshops zeer efficiënt vertrouwd geraakt met de vergunningsprocedures. Verder merkten we dat duurzame waterstof en de mogelijke toepassingen nog niet heel gekend zijn bij het brede publiek, vandaar is een animatievideo gerealiseerd die op een zeer eenvoudige, duidelijke en educatieve manier uitlegt hoe groene waterstof bijdraagt aan de duurzame wereld van morgen. Deze animatievideo is breed via social media en partners verspreid en staat ook op Klascement (kan door leerkrachten gebruikt worden als 'lesmateriaal'. En is ook door de VRT gebruikt in het programma 'De Markt' om aan de kijkers uit te leggen wat waterstof precies is en waarvoor het kan worden gebruikt. Sterke Waterstofregio! Samen met de gerealiseerde waterstofprojecten uit het vorige Interreg project zijn deze projecten een bron van kennis en ervaring, waardoor ook vervolgstappen konden worden gezet. De ontwikkelde technologie wordt intussen naar andere regio’s in Europa geëxporteerd. Meer dan 12 jaar Waterstofregio leert dat dat structureel grensoverschrijdende samenwerking tussen Vlaanderen en Nederland werkt! Het ecosysteem rond waterstof is, dankzij de realisaties maar ook dankzij de georganiseerde provinciale workshops en netwerkinspanningen, verder uitgebreid tot meer dan 125 bedrijven. De regio staat op de waterstofkaart.
