Description

Read more Description (EN): The challenge that TRITIUM plans to address is the improvement of existing detection systems for the prevention of tritium emission risks in water by energy generation and research facilities. The objective of the project is the rapid detection of tritium at levels of activity corresponding to those authorized by the legislation in force for the consumption of water. For this, we propose to design, build and develop a monitor for the detection in real time of tritium levels in water of the order of the limits established by the European Union for its consumption. This project makes it possible to significantly increase the radiological protection of the environment and potentially affected populations.
Our proposal is very innovative because, on the one hand, there is currently no tritium monitor capable of measuring in real time the levels of tritium activities in water authorized by the legislation, these levels being very low. On the other hand, the monitor system is innovative because it incorporates recent technological advances in different areas of the detection of very low energy ionizing radiation, in particular, the field of photo-sensors and scintillating fibers.
To realize this proposal, it was essential to form a multidisciplinary team, able to design the various components of the tritium monitor and to realize its construction and development. The international team promoting the project includes different teams with great expertise in the specific areas needed for the realization of the project, which guarantee the success. In addition, this international cooperation responds to the current need to solve the environmental radioactivity problem related to tritium emissions in natural watercourses by nuclear power plants, both internationally and cross-border.

- Laboratory tests and studies for the construction of the tritium detector prototype;
- The development of an ultrapure water production system from river water to perform simulations;
- The construction of a tritium monitor in water that allows its measurement in real time;
- Tests of the monitor in real operating conditions next to the drainage channel of the refrigeration reservoir of the Almaraz nuclear power plant in Cáceres.
The final prototype will be operational at its current location as a more integral part of the Extremadura Radiological Warning Network.
