Description (DE): Osteoporose ist in NWE ein ausgeprägtes Problem und führt zur höchst Rate an Knochenbrüchen im Vergleich zu allen EU Regionen. Pro 100k Einwohnern werden in der Region NWE 214 Hüftimplantate implantiert, der EU-Durchschnitt liegt bei 153 Implantationen. Die ökonomische und soziale Belastung durch Knochenbrüche ist enorm. Erschwingliche medizinische Versorgung und die schnellere Genesung bei geringeren Kosten könnte dies deutlich reduzieren. Das wachsende Gebiet der regenerativen Medizin bietet dazu Lösungspotential: smarte Implantate, z.B. 3D Gerüste hergestellt durch hochinnovative Technologien wie das Elektrospinnen, können die Regeneration von Knochen unterstützen und reduzieren den Bedarf an Gewebespendern, wiederholten Operationen oder anhaltender Medikation. Heutzutage gibt es jedoch erst wenige sehr lokal angesiedelte F&E orientierte Vorhaben in NWE. DE, FR und UK stellen führende Zentren für regenerative Medizin [REMEDIS report 2013] dar und beherbergen die meisten Firmen und Forschungsvorhaben auf diesem Gebiet (Cordis 2016).
Die Vorhaben fokussieren sich hauptsächlich auf F&E und nur zu geringen Teilen auf Produktentwicklung und Markteinführung von neuen medizinischen Endanwendungen. (COST network on electrospinning). Deswegen verfolgt BONE das Ziel die Aufwertung von kosteneffizienten und smarten 3D Implantate, hergestellt durch Elektrospinning (TRL8) zu beschleunigen. Dazu arbeiten 4 Forschungseinrichtungen, 4 Einrichtungen zur Unternehmensförderung und 5 industrielle Organisationen zusammen. So ermöglicht BONE die Entstehung neuer Arbeitsplätze (15), die Entwicklung zweier neuer Produkte und deren Testung (ESP Technologie und 3D smart Implantate) und die intensive Zusammenarbeit zwischen Innovationsführern (Westfalen, London, Paris), starken (Flämisch-Brabant, Süd-Limburg, Irland) und moderaten Innovatoren (Nord-pas-de-Calais) um die regionale Innovationskapazität zu im Bereich elektrospinntechnologiebasierte regenerative Medizin zu steigern.
Read more Description (EN): A distinctive problem for NWE is the high occurrence of osteoporosis, leading to the highest rates of bone fractures of all EU regions. The number of hip replacements per 100k population is 214 in the NWE region versus the EU28 average of 153 (OECD 2016). The economic and societal burden of bone fractures is enormous and could be reduced by the implementation of affordable, curative healthcare solutions that ensure a faster recovery with lower health care costs. The emerging field of regenerative medicine offers potential solutions: smart implants, such as 3D scaffolds created through a highly innovative technology called electrospinning can support the regeneration of skeletal bone and replace the need for tissue donors, repeat operations or ongoing medication. However only local electrospinning technology R&D driven initiatives currently exist in NWE. DE, FR and UK are leading hubs of regenerative medicine [REMEDIE report 2013] and also host most companies and research efforts in the field of electrospinning (Cordis 2016). Initiatives mainly focus on R&D and only limited on product development and market introduction of new medical end-applications (COST network on electrospinning 2015-2016).
The objective of BONE is therefore to accelerate the valorisation of cost-effective 3D smart implants fabricated by electrospinning technology (reaching TRL8) by collaboration between 4 research institutes, 4 business support organisations and 5 industry organisations. As such, BONE enables new jobs (15) to be created, two new products to be developed and tested in real life conditions (ESP technology and 3D smart implants) and intensive collaboration between Innovation leaders (Westphalia, London, Paris) strong innovators (Vlaams-Brabant, Southern-Limburg, Ireland) and moderate innovators (Nord-pas-de-Calais) in order to increase the regions’ innovation capacity in the area of electrospinning technology based regenerative medicine (Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2016).
Read more Description (FR): Les pays d´ENO possèdent le plus haut taux de fractures d´os des pays européens, dû à l´occurrence élevée de cas d´ostéoporose. Le nombre de hanches remplacées pour une population de 100 000 personnes atteint 214 en ENO contre 153 en moyenne sur l´UE. Le poids économique et sociétal de ces fractures est énorme et pourrait être réduit par l´implémentation de soins médicaux curatifs et abordables, pour assurer un rétablissement plus rapide et moins cher. L´émergence de la médecine régénérative propose une solution: les implants intelligents, comme les structures en 3D créées à travers une technologie innovante appelée l´electrospinning, qui peut aider à la régénération des os du squelette et remplacer le besoin de donneur de tissue, la répétition des opérations ou les traitements en cours. Cependant, seules des initiatives locales concernant l´electrospinning existent aujourd´hui. En ENO, DE, FR et UK possèdent des centres de médecine régénérative [REMEDIE report 2013] et hébergent la plupart des entreprises et des efforts de recherche dans le domaine (Cordis 2016). Ces initiatives se concentrent principalement sur la R&D et sont limités pour le développement et l´introduction sur le marché de nouvelles applications médicales (COST electrospinning).
L´objectif de BONE est donc d´accélérer la valorisation d´implants 3D intelligents rentables et fabriqués via l´électrospinning (TRL8) par la collaboration entre 4 instituts de recherches, 4 organisations d´appui aux entreprises et 5 organisations industrielles. Ainsi, BONE permettra la création d´emplois (15), 2 nouveaux développements de produit (et test en conditions réelles) et une intense collaboration entre les leaders (Westphalie, Londres, Paris), les acteurs reconnus (Vlaams Brabant, Sud Limburg, Irlande) et les nouveaux venus (Nord pas de Calais) sur la scène de l´innovation et ainsi améliorer leurs capacités d´innovation.
