The project consortium consists of two museum facilities, which deal with Central European modernism and cultural heritage preserved from this seminal cultural period (1890-1938), and the city of Brtnice, which owns the Josef Hoffmann House. This cultural heritage is managed by the MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Art/Contemporary Art and the Moravian Gallery in Brno under the name "Josef Hoffmann Museum" as a joint branch in Brtnice. It was Josef Hoffmann's parents' home and served him as a parade ground for his design ideas. His design and architectural blueprints had a decisive influence on the development of Central European Modernism. Objects of the project include - Communicating Central European Modernism to the widest possible audience, - Communicating cultural heritage in the context of the present and future, - Motivation of the creative and craft sectors in the programme area and, - Improvements in the Josef Hoffmann Museum with more accessibility for scientists, tourists and local visitors. Comprehensive knowledge of this shared cultural heritage promotes cohesion in the programme area, which was separated not only by a land and linguistic border, but, above all, by the disastrous political and military events leading up to 1948 and then by the Iron Curtain until 1989. In fact, Central European modernism could only be so successful, international and so sustainably developed, because transnational exchanges existed between artists and architects from Austria and the Czech Republic, which, in the case of some proponents, had already begun in their youth and continued later in the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Kunstgewerbeschule Wien). The project is also intended to stimulate this cross-border cooperation anew. To this end, we organise design camps and innovation workshops in South Moravia and Vienna, and establish the close relationship between creative cooperation and the growth potentials of the region in “Craft labs”. Independent of this, attractive exhibitions and accompanying programmes in the project give occasion to visit the museums and the collections. It is important to attract the regional audience as well as people from the other side of the border and motivate international tourists to visit. With this project, we want to link our cultural heritage to the present across borders, to relate the historical modernity of the past century with the radical transformation into the “Digital Modern Age”, on the threshold of which we are now standing and which will permanently transform all human life. Nevertheless, the cultural heritage of modernity remains the focus of the project, with a smaller exhibition in Brno and Brtnice, an overhaul of the permanent exhibition in the Moravian Gallery in Brno and an exhibition cycle in Vienna's MAK.

Das Projektkonsortium besteht aus zwei Museumseinrichtungen, die sich mit der zentraleuropäischen Moderne und dem Kulturerbe beschäftigen, das aus dieser wichtigen kulturgeschichtlichen Periode (1890 bis 1938) erhalten geblieben ist, und der Stadt Brtnice, in deren Eigentum das Josef Hoffmann Haus steht. Dieses Kulturerbe wird vom MAK - Österreichisches Museum für angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst und der Mährischen Galerie in Brünn unter dem Namen „Josef Hoffmann Museum“ als gemeinsame Expositur in Brtnice geführt. Es war das Elternhaus von Josef Hoffmann und diente ihm als Exerzierfeld seiner Gestaltungsideen. Seine Design- und Architekturentwürfe hatten maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der zentraleuropäischen Moderne. Gegenstand des Projekts sindVermittlung der zentraleuropäische Moderne an ein möglichst breites Publikum,Vermittlung von Kulturerbe im Kontext von Gegenwart und Zukunft,Motivation des kreativen und des kunsthandwerklichen Sektors im Programmgebiet undVerbesserungen im Josef Hoffmann Museum mit mehr Zugänglichkeit für Wissenschaftler, Touristen und lokale Besucher.Ein breites Wissen über dieses gemeinsame Kulturerbe fördert die Kohäsion im Programmgebiet, das nicht nur durch eine Sprach- und Landesgrenze, sondern vor allem durch die unheilvollen politischen und militärischen Ereignisse bis 1948 und dann durch den Eisernen Vorhang bis 1989 getrennt war. Tatsächlich aber konnte sich die zentraleuropäische Moderne nur dadurch so erfolgreich und international so nachhaltig entwickeln, weil es einen länderübergreifenden Austausch zwischen Künstlern und Architekten aus Österreich und Tschechien gegeben hat, der bei einigen Proponenten schon in der Jugend und bei anderen dann später an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Wien begonnen hat. Durch das Projekt soll diese grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit auch wieder neu stimuliert werden. Dazu veranstalten wir Design Camps und Innovationsworkshops in Südmähren und Wien und stellen in „Handwerk Labs“ den engen Bezug zwischen kreativer Zusammenarbeit und den Wachstumspotentialen der Region her. Unabhängig davon geben attraktive Ausstellungen und Begleitprogramme im Projekt Anlass, die Museen und die Sammlungen zu besuchen. Dabei gilt es, das regionale Publikum wie auch die Menschen jenseits der Grenze und den internationalen Tourismus anzusprechen und zum Besuch zu motivieren. Mit dem Projekt wollen wir grenzübergreifend das Kulturerbe und die Gegenwart in Beziehung bringen, die historische Moderne des vergangenen Jahrhunderts mit dem Umbruch zur „Digitale Moderne“ in Beziehung setzen, an deren Anfang wir erst stehen und die alle Lebensbereiche des Menschen nachhaltig verändern wird. Nichtsdestotrotz bleibt das Kulturerbe der Moderne im Fokus des Projekts mit kleineren Ausstellung in Brno und Brtnice, einer Überarbeitung der Dauerausstellung im Brünner Statthalterpalast und einem Ausstellungszyklus im Wiener MAK.

Projektové konsorcium sestává ze dvou musejních zařízení, která se zabývají středoevropskou modernou a kulturním dědictvím, které zůstalo zachováno z tohoto významného období (1890 až 1938), a z města Brtnice, v jehož vlastnictví se dům Josefa Hoffmanna nachází. Toto kulturní dědictví je vedeno MAK – Rakouským museem užitého / současného umění a Moravskou galerií v Brně pod názvem „Muzeum Josefa Hoffmanna“ jako společná expozitura v Brtnici. Byl to rodičovský dům Josefa Hoffmanna a sloužil mu jako pole pro procvičování jeho tvůrčích myšlenek. Jeho designerské a architektonické návrhy měly rozhodující vliv na vývoj středoevropské moderny. Předmětem projektu jsouzprostředkování středoevropské moderny pokud možno širokému publiku,zprostředkování kulturního dědictví v kontextu přítomnosti a budoucnosti,motivování kreativního a uměleckoprůmyslového sektoru v oblasti projektu azlepšení v Muzeu Josefa Hoffmanna s větší přístupností pro vědce, turisty a místní návštěvníky. Široké vědomosti o tomto společném kulturním dědictví podporují kohezi v oblasti programu, která byla přerušena nejen jazykovou a zemskou hranicí, nýbrž především neblahými politickými a vojenskými událostmi do roku 1948 a pak do roku 1989 železnou oponou. Středoevropská moderna se tím ve skutečnosti mohla úspěšně a mezinárodně trvale vyvíjet, protože existovala zemské hranice překračující výměna mezi umělci a architekty z Rakouska a z České republiky, která pro některé proponenty začala již v mládí a pro jiné pak později na Uměleckoprůmyslové škole ve Vídni. Tato přeshraniční spolupráce má být také projektem nově stimulována. K tomu budeme pořádat Design Camps a inovativní workshopy na Jižní Moravě a ve Vídni vytvářet v „laboratoři řemesel“ těsný vztah mezi kreativní spoluprací a potenciály růstu regionu. Nezávisle na tom přinesou atraktivní výstavy a doprovodné programy v projektu podnět pro navštěvování museí a sbírek. Přitom je třeba oslovit regionální publikum a lidi z druhé strany hranice a mezinárodní turismus a motivovat je k návštěvě. Projektem chceme bez ohledu na hranice ukázat vztah kulturního dědictví a současnosti, najít vztah historické moderny minulého století s přelomem k „digitální moderně“, na jehož počátku teprve stojíme a který trvale změní všechny oblasti života lidí. I přesto zůstává kulturní dědictví moderny v ohnisku projektu s menší výstavou v Brně a Brtnici, přepracováním stálé výstavy v brněnském Místodržitelském paláci a s cyklem výstav ve vídeňském MAK.

Achievements (EN):

As part of the ongoing Interreg project “Bilateral Design Networks. Design Innovations from Modernism around 1900 to Digital Modernism”, the plan for a design camp was developed at the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice (CZ). The aim of the Design Camp was to create a new access to the cultural heritage left by Josef Hoffmann in Brtnice through an Artists-in-Residence program and to revive the specific function of his birthplace as a place of creativity. To this end, the MAK, Vienna, and the Moravian Gallery, Brno, invited selected Czech and Austrian students, under the direction of Stefan Moritsch, New Design University, St. Pölten, to develop ideas for the design of Josef Hoffmann’s birthplace and his garden. On the basis of an examination of the design thinking, the work and the presentation of the work and succession of Josef Hoffmann in the Josef Hoffmann Museum, run by the MAK and the Moravian Gallery, a variety of design tasks could be chosen: Designs or concepts for furniture for the mediation programs of the Josef Hoffmann Museum, graphic placement offers for school classes and kindergartens, containers for placement material etc. Seating furniture that absorbs or reflects Hoffmann’s design thinking Designs or concepts for furniture and design of the garden of his birth house in Brtnice, originally designed by Josef Hoffmann, which absorb or reflect Hoffmann’s design thinking Ideas for the forecourt design of the Josef Hoffmann Museum In September 2018, the students spent a week in Brtnice and were informed about Josef Hoffmann’s life, work and design thinking through guided tours, lectures by experts and intensive contact with the population. Initial ideas were further developed in 2018/19 in workshops with the students in Brno, Vienna and Prague. In December 2018, a first presentation of the results of the Design Camp for the population in Brtnice took place. Finally, the students were able to realise their specific projects as part of a one-week workshop in Ober-Grafendorf (Lower Austria) accompanied by trained master craftsmen in the form of prototypes and models. The realisation was documented in film and photographic form. The presentation will show the nine completed projects.

Im Rahmen des laufenden Interreg-Projekts „Bilaterale Designnetzwerke. Designinnovationen von der Moderne um 1900 bis zur Digitalen Moderne“ wurde der Plan für ein Design Camp im Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice (CZ) entwickelt. Ziel des Design Camps war es, durch ein Artists-in-Residence-Programm einen neuen Zugang zum Kulturerbe, das Josef Hoffmann in Brtnice hinterlassen hat, herzustellen und die spezifische Funktion seines Geburtsorts als Ort der Kreativität wiederzubeleben. Zu diesem Zweck luden das MAK, Wien, und die Mährische Galerie, Brünn, ausgewählte tschechische und österreichische StudentInnen ein, unter der Leitung von Stefan Moritsch, New Design University, St. Pölten, Ideen für die Gestaltung von Josef Hoffmanns Geburtshaus und dessen Garten zu entwickeln. Auf der Basis einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Entwurfsdenken, dem Werk und der Präsentation der Arbeit und Nachfolge Josef Hoffmanns im vom MAK und der Mährischen Galerie geführten Josef Hoffmann Museum konnte aus verschiedenen Gestaltungsaufgaben gewählt werden: Entwürfe oder Konzepte für Mobiliar für die Vermittlungsprogramme des Josef Hoffmann Museums, grafische Vermittlungsangebote für Schulklassen und Kindergärten, Container für Vermittlungsmaterial etc. Sitzmöbel, die das Designdenken Hoffmanns aufnehmen oder reflektieren Entwürfe oder Konzepte für Mobiliar und Gestaltung des ursprünglich von Josef Hoffmann angelegten Gartens seines Geburtshauses in Brtnice, die das Designdenken Hoffmanns aufnehmen oder reflektieren Ideen für die Vorplatzgestaltung des Josef Hoffmann Museums Im September 2018 verbrachten die StudentInnen eine Woche in Brtnice und wurden durch Führungen, Vorträge von ExpertInnen und intensiven Kontakt mit der Bevölkerung über Leben, Werk und Designdenken Josef Hoffmanns informiert. Erste Ideen wurden 2018/19 in Workshops mit den StudentInnen in Brünn, Wien und Prag weiterentwickelt. Im Dezember 2018 erfolgte eine erste Präsentation der Ergebnisse des Design Camps für die Bevölkerung in Brtnice. Zum Abschluss konnten die StudentInnen ihre spezifischen Projekte im Rahmen eines einwöchigen, von geschulten Handwerksmeistern begleiteten Workshops in Ober-Grafendorf (Niederösterreich) in Form von Prototypen und Modellen realisieren. Die Realisierung wurde filmisch und fotografisch dokumentiert. In der Präsentation werden die neun ausgeführten Projekte gezeigt.

Wesentliche Ergebnisse des Projektes sind ein breites Wissen und Verständnis des gemeinsamen Kulturerbes, funktionierende Arbeitsstrukturen zwischen den einzelnen Kulturinstitutionen und eine größere Öffentlichkeit, die sich für den Besuch von Sammlungen, Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen zum Thema interessiert. Dieses Publikum setzt sich nicht nur aus Einheimischen, sondern auch aus Menschen aus dem Nachbarland und anderen Ländern (internationales Publikum) zusammen. Bereits das Wiener Tourismuskonzept aus dem Jahr 2009 erkennt klar den Zusammenhang zwischen Nächtigungszahlen und attraktiven Kulturevents, die zum Besuch der Region motivieren. Dieser Zusammenhang wird im Tourismuskonzept 2015 (Aktionsfeld „Museumsstadt“) nochmals bestätigt. Aus diesem Grund implementiert das Projekt Ausstellungen (mit Bewerbung und Begleitprogrammen), die zum Besuch der Programmregion animieren.

Klíčovými výsledky projektu jsou široké znalosti a chápání společného kulturního dědictví, fungující pracovní struktury mezi různými kulturními institucemi a širší veřejnost, která má zájem o návštěvu sbírek, výstav a akcí na toto téma. Toto publikum se skládá nejen z místních obyvatel, ale také z lidí ze sousedních a dalších zemí (mezinárodní publikum). Již Wiener Tourismuskonzept z roku 2009 rozpoznává jasně souvislost mezi počtem přenocování a atraktivními kulturními akcemi, které motivují k návštěvě regionu. Tato souvislost se potvrzuje i v konceptu cestovního ruchu 2015 (pole působnosti „město muzeí“). Z tohoto důvodu se projekt soustředí rovněž na výstavy (včetně propagace a doprovodných programů) a další, na výstavách nezávislé akce a vzdělávací programy, které podporují návštěvnost.
