Nowadays the success factors for companies are product innovation and efficient use of resources (energy, raw materials etc.). The surface treatments, in this contest, are strategically important because they allow to decorate, protect and give to the substrates the desired physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Many of the features required by a material depend on the characteristics of its surface: to be able to modify its properties saving resources and reducing waste and emissions is an important tool for companies of the program area. Plasma technologies allows to modify the surface characteristics with hi-tech and eco-friendly processes. There are obstacles to use those technologies given by unavailability of equipments, required know-how for their management and especially the cost of experimentation and testing. Thanks to this project it will be possible to put together the multi-disciplinary competences and hardware of each of the partners to overcome these barriers. The main activities of this project will be: - Identification of the SME’s needs of the program area, - Performing experimentations, - Combination of the different plasma technologies, - Dissemination, information and advertising of studies and results.

Heutzutage sind die Produktinnovation und der effiziente Gebrauch von Ressourcen (Energie, Rohstoffe etc.) Erfolgsfaktoren für Unternehmen. Die Oberflächenbehandlungen, in diesem Zusammenhang, sind strategisch wichtig, da sie ermöglichen, Substrate zu dekorieren, zu schützen und ihnen die gewünschten physikalischen, chemischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften zu verleihen. Viele der von einem Material geforderten Merkmale sind von dessen Oberflächeneigenschaften abhängig: Imstande zu sein, dessen Eigenschaften zu modifizieren, Ressourcen zu sparen, Abfall und Emissionen zu reduzieren, ist ein wichtiges Instrument für Unternehmen im Programmgebiet. Plasmatechnologien ermöglichen es, die Oberflächeneigenschaften mit Hi-Tech- und umweltfreundlichen Prozessen zu modifizieren. Es existieren Hindernisse für die Nutzung dieser Technologien durch eine Nichtverfügbarkeit der Anlagen, durch das erforderliche Know-how für deren Betrieb und insbesondere die Kosten für die Versuchsdurchführungen und Prüfungen. Dank dem Projekt wird es möglich sein, die Ausrüstungen und die multidisziplinären Kompetenzen der Partner zusammenzuführen, um diese Barrieren zu überwinden. Die Hauptaktivitäten in diesem Projekt sind: - Identifizierung des Bedarfs der KMUs im Programmgebiet, - Versuchsdurchführungen, - Kombination der unterschiedlichen Plasmatechnologien, - Verbreitung, Information und Vermarktung der Studien und der Ergebnisse.

Al giorno d’oggi i fattori di successo per le aziende sono l’innovazione di prodotto e l’uso efficiente delle risorse (energia, materie prime ecc.). I trattamenti di superficie, in questo contesto, hanno un’importanza strategica perché consentono di decorare, proteggere e conferire ai substrati le proprietà fisiche, chimiche e meccaniche desiderate. Molte delle proprietà richieste ad un materiale dipendono dalle caratteristiche della sua superficie; essere in grado di modificare le caratteristiche delle superfici, risparmiando risorse e riducendo i rifiuti e le emissioni, rappresenta un importante strumento per le imprese dell’area di programma. L’utilizzo delle tecnologie al plasma consente proprio di agire sulle caratteristiche delle superfici con processi hi-tech ed eco-compatibili. Vi sono, tuttavia, degli ostacoli oggettivi all’utilizzo di queste tecnologie dati dalla scarsa disponibilità di impianti, dal know-how necessario alla loro gestione e soprattutto dai costi di sperimentazione e test. Grazie a questo progetto sarà possibile unire le attrezzature e le competenze multidisciplinari proprie di ciascuno dei partner per superare queste barriere. Le principali attività di progetto sono: - Identificazione delle necessità delle PMI dell’area di programma; - Sperimentazioni; - Combinazione delle differenti tecnologie al plasma; - Divulgazione, informazione e promozione degli studi e dei risultati.

Achievements (EN):

The ICAP cross-border project, carried out over the last 3 years under the Interreg V-A Italy-Austria 2014-2020 programme, dealt with surface modification by plasma. The project activities of Wood K plus focused on the metallic PVDBe coatings of wood-based substrates using plasma-assisted magnetron sputtering processes. View: Due to the promising results of the PVD coating tests of electrically conductive layers on wood-based substrates, further studies on this topic are now being conducted in the recently launched project Conwood (FFGNr. 871282) continued. In particular, in addition to process optimisation to achieve a permanent, electrical conductivity, it is also about the deposition of alloys and oxide compounds for the generation of transparent, conductive layers as well as multilayer systems for the production of thermocouples. One focus of Wood K plus’s project work was the plasma coating of functional layers on WPC, paper, plywood and cellulose fiber fleece under atmospheric pressure. Conclusions & Outlook: The experiments of plasma-assisted deposition of functional nanolayers under atmospheric pressure, such as hydrophobic, antibacterial and adhesion mediating layers on wood-based materials, were largely successful. For example, “superhydrophobic” surfaces could be achieved on plywood, paper and cellulose fibre nonwovens, as well as adhesion media layers on WPC, which showed optimal adhesion to powder coatings and wet lacquer coatings. In subsequent studies, it is planned to further optimise the plasma coating process in order to develop reproducible coating systems with customised surface properties.

Achievements (DE):

Das grenzüberschreitende Projekt ICAP, das in den letzten 3 Jahren im Rahmen des Programms Interreg V-A Italien-Österreich 2014-2020 durchgeführt wurde, befasste sich mit der Oberflächenmodifizierung mittels Plasma. Im Fokus der Projekttätigkeiten vonseiten Wood K plus standen die metallischen PVDBeschichtungen holzbasierter Substrate mittels plasmaunterstütztem Magnetronsputterverfahren. Ausblick: Aufgrund der vielversprechenden Ergebnisse der PVD-Beschichtungsversuche elektrisch leitender Schichten auf holzbasierte Substrate werden nun weitere Studien zu diesem Thema im kürzlich gestarteten Projekt ConWood (FFGNr. 871282) weitergeführt. Im Speziellen geht es neben der Prozessoptimierung zur Erzielung einer dauerhaften, elektrischen Leitfähigkeit auch um die Abscheidung von Legierungen und Oxidverbindungen zur Erzeugung transparenter, leitfähiger Schichten sowie von Multilayersystemen zur Herstellung von Thermoelementen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Projektarbeiten von Wood K plus war die Plasmabeschichtung funktioneller Schichten auf WPC, Papier, Sperrholz und Zellulosefaservlies unter Atmosphärendruck. Schlussfolgerungen & Ausblick: Die Versuche der plasmaunterstützten Abscheidung funktioneller Nanoschichten unter Atmosphärendruck, wie hydrophobe, antibakterielle und Haftvermittlerschichten auf Holzwerkstoffe verliefen größtenteils erfolgreich. So konnten beispielsweise „superhydrophobe“ Oberflächen auf Sperrholz, Papier und Zellulosefaservlies erzielt sowie Haftvermittlerschichten auf WPC aufgebracht werden, die eine optimale Haftung zu Pulverlack- und Nasslackbeschichtungen aufwiesen. In nachfolgenden Studien ist geplant, den Plasmacoatingprozess weiter zu optimieren, um reproduzierbare Schichtsysteme mit maßgeschneiderten Oberflächeneigenschaften zu entwickeln.

Expected Results (DE):

Im Brillen-, Modezubehör- und Holzsektor – Schlüsselbereiche im Programmgebiet – besteht der Bedarf, den Unternehmen neue Werkzeuge anzubieten, um innovative Produkte und nachhaltigere Prozesse zu entwickeln. In einer wachsenden „globalen“ Wirtschaft hat der Schutz von Umweltressourcen nicht nur einen ethischen sondern auch einen Vermarktungswert: dies trifft vor allem in alpinen Regionen wie in jenen der Partner zu. Die Plasmatechnologie kann die Antwort auf diesen Bedarf sein, da sie eine Zukunftstechnologie ist, die eine Chance für nachhaltiges Wachstum und die Entwicklung von innovativen Produkten und Prozessen darstellt. Derzeit wird die Entwicklung der Plasmatechnologien durch die Nichtverfügbarkeit von Anlagen, erforderlichem Know-how für deren Betrieb und vor allem den Kosten für die Versuche gehemmt. Diese Partnerschaft kann einen hohen Grad an Kompetenzen und Anlagentechnik garantieren und mit der Entwicklung dieses Projektes beitragen, die industriellen Anwendungen dieser Technologie zu verbessern. Während einerseits die Synergie zwischen mehreren Einrichtungen im Programmgebiet ein unbestreitbarer Mehrwert ist, stellt andererseits deren Dislokation einen kritischen Faktor für die gemeinsamen Versuche dar. Das Hauptziel des Projektes sind Oberflächenbehandlungen, die den Substraten dekorative, schützende und die geforderten physikalischen, chemischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften verleihen sowie die Entwicklung eines hochwertigen Werkzeugs, für jetzt und die Zukunft, da viele der geforderten Materialeigenschaften maßgeblich von dessen Oberfläche abhängen. Die starke und direkte Beziehung zu Unternehmen wird es den Partnern ermöglichen, Lösungen in Übereinstimmung mit den Marktanforderungen zu entwickeln und die Projektergebnisse unmittelbar zu transferieren.

Nei settori degli occhiali, della moda e del legno – settori chiave nell’area di programma – c’è la necessità di dare alle aziende nuovi strumenti per creare prodotti innovativi e processi più sostenibili. In un’economia sempre più globale, la salvaguardia delle risorse naturali non ha solo un valore etico, ma anche di mercato: questo vale soprattutto in aree montane come quelle dei partner. La tecnologia al plasma può essere la risposta a simili necessità in quanto tecnologia del futuro, che rappresenta un’opportunità per la crescita sostenibile e lo sviluppo di prodotti e processi innovativi. Allo stato attuale, lo sviluppo delle tecnologie del plasma incontra elevate barriere in termini di disponibilità delle attrezzature, know-how per la loro gestione e costi di sperimentazione. Questa partnership è in grado di garantire un elevato livello di competenze e attrezzature all’avanguardia e con lo sviluppo di questo progetto contribuirà a migliorare la conoscenza relativa alle applicazioni industriali di queste tecnologie. Se da un lato la sinergia tra più strutture dell’area di programma è un innegabile valore aggiunto, dall’altro la loro dislocazione può costituire un fattore critico nella sperimentazione di un approccio combinato delle diverse tecnologie. L’obiettivo principale del progetto sta proprio nel formulare nuovi trattamenti di superficie che consentano di decorare, proteggere e conferire ai substrati le proprietà fisiche, chimiche e meccaniche desiderate e costituiscano uno strumento rilevante per le aziende, non solo ora ma anche per il futuro, posto che molte delle caratteristiche richieste ad un materiale, dipendono da quelle della sua superficie. La stretta e diretta relazione con le imprese permetterà ai partner di sviluppare soluzioni in linea con le necessità del mercato e di trasferire immediatamente i risultati del progetto.
