In Europa nimmt in den vergangenen Jahren die Häufigkeit von Insekten drastisch ab. Zugleich stellen Insekten 80 Prozent der Tierarten Mitteleuropas. Zu den Gründen der Abnahme existieren Hypothesen, die noch keine eindeutigen Handlungsoptionen eröffnen. Das Projekt protectAlps soll für den bayerisch-österreichischen Alpenraum die potentielle Bedrohung der Insekenvielfalt durch global verbreitete, schwer abbaubare Schadstoffe erfassen. Diese Schadstoffe werden in den Alpenraum durch die Atmosphäre eingetragen. ProtectAlps soll die Grundlage auf österreichischer und bayerischer Seite bilden, um an alpinen Observatorien langfristige Änderungen der Arten-Zusammensetzung von Insekten in Verbindung zu setzen mit chemischen Stressoren (schwer abbaubare Schadstoffe und Stickstoff-Einträge in Ökosysteme). Ausgangspunkt für das Projekt bilden weltweit einzigartige Messungen der Luftkonzentrationen von schwer abbaubaren Schadstoffen, die an den Observatorien Hoher Sonnblick (AT) und Umweltforschungsstation Schneefernerhaus (DE) seit 2005 durchgeführt werden. Allerdings lassen sich diese Messreihen nicht in Bezug setzen zu Vorkommen und Häufigkeit von Insekten, auch der Gehalt dieser Schadstoffe und deren Wirkung in wildlebenden Insekten ist weltweit unbekannt. Ebenso wenig wird aktuell der Zusammenhang zwischen Konzentrationen von atmosphärischen Stickstoff-Verbindungen als Zwangs-Dünger und alpiner Pflanzendiversität strukturiert erfasst, obwohl die Zusammensetzung der alpinen Vegetation grundlegende Auswirkungen auf das Vorkommen von Insekten hat. ProtectAlps soll diese Zusammenhänge zum ersten Mal unter gemeinsamen Standards erfassen, Methoden für eine wiederkehrende Erfassung entwickeln und die Ergebnisse für langfristige Vergleiche auf österreichischer und bayerischer Seite in den kommenden Dekaden verfügbar machen.

Description (EN):

In Europe, the incidence of insects has decreased dramatically in recent years. At the same time insects represent 80 percent of the species of Central Europe. There are hypotheses about the reasons for the decrease, which do not yet open up clear options for action. The project protectAlps is intended to detect the potential threat to insect diversity in the Bavarian-Austrian Alpine region caused by globally distributed, hardly degradable pollutants. These pollutants are introduced into the Alpine space through the atmosphere. ProtectAlps is to form the basis on the Austrian and Bavarian side in order to link long-term changes in the species composition of insects at alpine observatories with chemical stressors (persistent pollutants and nitrogen inputs in ecosystems). Starting point for the project are unique measurements of air concentrations of persistent pollutants that have been carried out at the Observatory Hoher Sonnblick (AT) and the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus since 2005. However, these series of measurements can not be related to occurrence and frequency of insects, nor the content of these pollutants and their effect in wild insects is unknown worldwide. Similarly, the relationship between concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen compounds as compulsory fertilizer and alpine plant diversity is currently not structured, although the composition of alpine vegetation has a fundamental impact on the occurrence of insects. For the first time, ProtectAlps should capture these relationships under common standards, develop methods for recurrent capture, and make the results available for long-term comparisons on the Austrian and Bavarian sides in the coming decades.

Expected Results (DE): EI 7 - Kooperationsintensität - gemessen am Anteil derjenigen, die grenzüberschreitende Kooperationen als zumindest überdurchschnittlich bewerten (in % der gesamten Bewertung)

Expected Outputs (DE): Die Projekt-Ergebnisse werden bei den beteiligen Partnern bewirken, dass sich etablierte Kanäle zur gemeinsamen Erfassung von chemischen Stressoren entwickeln und ein intensiver grenzüberschreitender Austausch erfolgt.
