Description (EN): Sediments and sediment management play a fundamental role in the management of rivers and their quality. The Upper (Austria) and Middle Danube (Hungary) are facing sediment related problems (e.g. river bed erosion) impacting the ecological condition, flood risk management, navigation and hydropower. Since water and sediments don’t regard borders, a cross border cooperation is needed in the area of field monitoring, numerical and physical modelling and practical river engineering measures. SEDDON II continues the basic achievements reached in SEDDON and focuses on the implementation of the suggested improvements. SEDDON II aims to improve knowledge and knowledge transfer from science to river management. Studies based on longer-term programs will lead to targeted and efficient measures in order to improve the ecological status and flood risk management. The key outputs of the project are i) a modern hydraulic engineering laboratory (HEL), being a unique research infrastructure with a discharge of up to 10 m³/s, allowing the study of basic processes and interrelations with river engineering measures; ii) a joint monitoring and modelling system, including the set up of new sediment monitoring stations and an expeditionary river survey system (ERiSS) in the HU section of the Danube, similarly to the station already existing in AT, and a comprehensive modelling throughout the project implementation, covering low, mean and high flow situations; iii) a guideline for joint river engineering measures based on the combination of large scale physical modelling with new numerical modelling using data from field monitoring. By using the new HEL an innovative infrastructure is available for exchanging knowledge between AT and HU, including experts, students and the public (also in the framework of the EUSDR flagship project DREAM). From the outcomes of SEDDON II the entire population along the Danube River will benefit.
Read more Description (HU): A folyókkal való gazdálkodásban és a folyó vízminőségében alapvető szerepet játszik a hordalék, és a hordalékgazdálkodás. A Duna felső- (ausztriai) és közép- (magyarországi) szakaszán számos, a hordalék vándorlásából eredő problémával szembesülünk (pl. a meder mélyülése), melyek hatással vannak a Duna ökológiai állapotára, árvízi kockázatra, hajózásra és az energiatermelésre. Mivel a folyó és az abban utazó hordalék vándorlása az országhatárokra nincs tekintettel, a kapcsolódó problémák kezeléséhez határon átnyúló együttműködésre van szükség, ami magában foglalja a terepi adatgyűjtést, a számítógépes és laboratóriumi modellezési eljárásokat, valamint a mérnöki beavatkozásokat is. A SEDDON II projektben folytatjuk a SEDDON projektben megalapozott vizsgálatokat és az ott javasolt fejlesztéseket végrehajtjuk. A SEDDON II projekt célja a tudásfejlesztés és -transzfer a tudománytól a vízgazdálkodásig. Hosszúidejű vizsgálataink célirányos és hatékony beavatkozásokhoz vezetnek, melyek javítják a folyó ökológiai állapotát és csökkentik az árvízkockázatot. A projekt fő kimenetei: i) korszerű vízépítési laboratórium (HEL), egyedülálló kutatási felszereléssel, 10 m³ os kapacitással; ii) közös terepi adatgyűjtő és modellező rendszer, ami magában foglalja új mérőállomások és egy expedíciós mérőrendszer kialakítását (ERiSS) a magyar Duna-szakaszon és kis-, közép- és árvízi állapotokat leíró modelleket; iii) a közös mérnöki megoldásokat tartalmazó útmutató, amelynek alapját az új, a terepi adatokora épülő laboratóriumi és számítógépes modellek adják. Az új HEL segítségével egy olyan innovatív infrastruktúra épül ki, ami elősegíti a két ország közötti tudástranszfert kutatók, középiskolai és egyetemi hallgatók és a nyilvánosság között (hasonlóképpen a DREAM EUDRS zászlóshajó projektben). A SEDDON II kimenetei a teljes Duna-menti lakosság javára szolgálnak.
Read more Description (DE): Sedimente und Sedimentmanagement sind von großer Bedeutung für das Management von Flüssen und deren Qualität. So treten an der Oberen (AT) und Mittleren Donau (HU) sedimentbezogene Probleme (z.B. Sohleintiefung) auf, welche die ökologischen Bedingungen, Hochwasserschutz, Schifffahrt und Energiewirtschaft beeinflussen. Da Wasser und Sedimente keine Grenzen beachten, braucht es eine grenzüberschreitende Kooperation in den Bereichen Monitoring, numerische und physikalische Modellierung sowie praktische Flussbaumaßnahmen. SEDDON II basiert auf dem in SEDDON gewonnenen Wissen und konzentriert sich auf die Umsetzung der vorgeschlagenen Verbesserungen. Das Ziel von SEDDON II ist der Wissenszuwachs und der Wissenstransfer von Forschung zu Gewässermanagement. Studien basierend auf Langzeitprogrammen führen zu zielgerichteten und effizienten Maßnahmen, die den ökologischen Zustand und das Hochwassermanagement verbessern. Kernoutputs des Projekts sind i) ein modernes Wasserbaulabor (WBL), welches eine einzigartige Forschungsinfrastruktur mit einem Durchfluss von bis zu 10 m³/s darstellt und Versuche von grundlegenden Prozessen und deren Interaktion mit Maßnahmen erlaubt; ii) ein gemeinsames Monitoring- u. Modellierungssystem, inkl. Errichtung von neuen Sedimentmessstationen und ERiSS im HU Abschnitt der Donau, ähnlich der bereits in AT existierenden Station, sowie eine umfassende Modellierung von Nieder-, Mittel- und Hochwassersituationen während der Projektlaufzeit; iii) Arbeitsbehelf für abgestimmte Flussbaumaßnahmen basierend auf der Verknüpfung von großmaßstäblichen Modellversuchen mit neuen numerischen Modellen unter Verwendung von Feldmessdaten. Durch das neue WBL steht eine innovative Infrastruktur zur Verfügung, die einen Wissenstransfer zwischen AT und HU einschließlich ExpertInnen, StudentenInnen und der Öffentlichkeit (auch im Rahmen des EUSDR flagship Projekts DREAM) ermöglicht. Von den Ergebnissen von SEDDON II profitiert die gesamte Bevölkerung entlang der Donau.

Expected Outputs (HU): A projekt konkrét javaslatokat tesz egy új folyógazdálkodási stratégiára, a Felső- és Közép Dunai víztestek ökológiai állapotának és árvízkezelésének javítására, melyben a hordalékvándorlás kiemelt szerepet játszik.
Expected Outputs (DE): Das Projekt führt zu konkreten Vorschlägen einer neuen Gewässermanagementstrategie, um den ökologischen Zustand und das Hochwassermanagement an Wasserkörpern der Oberen und Mittleren Donau zu verbessern, wobei Sedimente eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
