The values of society are tied to the uppermost subsurface and climate change has a rapid impact here.In the WaterCAP projects (InterReg IVB) the TOPSOIL partnership has performed an extensive consultation with the EU commission, waterworks, farmers, city planners and public bodies across the NSR. Five shared climate adaptation challenges related to the top soil and groundwater were revealed: Groundwater flooding in towns and agricultural areas. Saltwater intrusion into freshwater reserves. The need for a groundwater buffer to store excess rain water for later use. Better management of soil conditions, to strengthen the resilience to extreme rain events and improve water quality. An unused capacity to break down nutrients and hazardous pollutants in the uppermost layersThese challenges will be addressed in 16 pilot areas, to develop and test solutions for managing uppermost 20-30 m of the subsurface. This will lead to a strong improvement of climate resilience in and across pilot areas, The project will improve e.g.:protection against groundwater flooding, groundwater storage for irrigation and drinking water inland and in coastal areasless leaching of nutrients and pollutants along with improved yieldsNew investigation and managament methods will be developed through transnational joint approach techniques and management will be transferred between the countries. The partnership is strongly commited to bridging science, practice and countries.

Achievements (EN):

44 innovative solutions for resilient soil and (ground)water resources adapted by more than 100 organizations in 16 pilot areas and five countries – that, in a nutshell, is TOPSOIL’s (Dec. 2015 - 2021) response to climate change. A partnership of scientific, governmental, and non-governmental organisations from Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Germany delivered activities in their pilot projects to: Engage and involve stakeholders in the development of groundwater management solutions. The Topsoil project was often crucial in bridging the gap between scientists and (not only) agricultural stakeholders. A stakeholder synthesis summarizes the lessons learned. Develop and test new technical tools to generate much-needed data. By serving as peer reviewers, they helped each other improve results and strategies - and build capacity for several farmers. Develop conceptual models and simulated climate change impacts to address local challenges. The integration of hydro(geo)logy and geophysics provided the necessary deeper understanding of subsurface structure and ongoing processes in several areas affected by climate change (salinization, draught, flooding). The results clearly showed the impact of climate change and the need to adapt to it. More details can be found in the final TOPSOIL report, already presented in 2019 and updated in 2021. Further help in raising awareness of the need for adaptive groundwater management was provided by 15 peer-reviewed scientific publications, a large number of non-technical publications and events, including 28 videos and broadcasts, and a policy day (2019) linking the final TOPSOIL conference to the Danish climate change adaptation conference with 300 participants. Share and exchange ideas at local, national and transnational scales. Joining clusters of many Interreg, European or national projects created opportunities for synergies and transfer. Partners implemented a learning approach for new ways of managing through a Transnational Governance Team. More than 14 workshops compared solutions for groundwater flooding, nitrated leaching, salinization, soil governance, or scenario application to help local partners solve their challenges, e.g. by using specific TOPSOIL roadmaps for groundwater flooding and nutrient management. Develop new management plans for the 16 pilot projects (cf. the final TOPSOIL report) and to capitalize the results beyond the projects to inspire organizations outside the project. The tTEM development not only led to the creation of a company, but also resulted in a transnational generation of new and cost-effective digital underground data (for an overview see Capitalization Report). In the final year of the project, and in response to increasing drought in summer and too much water in winter, TOPSOIL partners focused on developing measures to compensate for seasonal changes due to climate change, such as innovative managed aquifer recharge measures like creek ridge infiltration or understanding nitrate leaching and salinity. TOPSOIL delivered activities that will significantly improve water quality. The partners are proud to share information about progress and results widely (see above).
