Habitat degradation of Sites of Community Importance (SIC), under anthropogenic pressures, or for the diffusion of Exotically Invasive Species (EIS), is a common problem for both sides of the Alpes. RestHAlp project, which associate SIC managers and research centre which have collaborated before, aims to restore the ecological habitat and promote exosystemic services, in and around of SIC.

La dégradation d’habitats dans les Sites d’Importance Communautaire (SIC) soumis à des pressions anthropiques, ou pour la diffusion d’Espèces Exotiques Envahissantes (EEE) est un problème commun aux deux versants des Alpes. Le projet RestHAlp, qui associe des gestionnaires de SIC et des centres de recherche ayant déjà travaillé ensemble, vise à la restauration écologique d’habitats et à la promotion de services écosystémiques (SE) dans et autour des SIC.

La degradazione del habitat dei Siti di Importanza Comunitaria (SIC) sottomessi a delle pressioni antropiche, o dalla diffusione di Spezie Esotiche Invadente (SEI), è un problema comune ai due versanti delle Alpi. Il progetto RestHAlp, che associa dei gestori dei SIC e dei centri di ricerca che hanno già lavorato insieme, mira alla restaurazione ecologica dell’habitat e alla promozione di servizi ecosistemico in e attorno ai SIC.

Achievements (EN):

The project has carried out numerous communication activities aimed at the different actors in the area to actively involve them and to improve and promote the results achieved under RestHAlp and RestHAlp+. The main communication activities carried out were: Publication of an article in a scientific journal: The study carried out within the framework of the RestHAlp project on the spread and possible spread of the South African Senecio and the Bohemian Perennial Knoterich in the Aosta Valley was carried out at the 12nd International conference presented biological invasions (Neobiota 2022 – Tartu, Estonia) Updating cartography for the spread of invasive alien species. Production of 1 information video on the problem of invasive alien species, 1 technical video on the management of these species, 1 video on the valorisation of ecosystem services. Technical days: On 10.05.22 a technical day was organised at the Reinach Agricultural School (FR) on specific equipment for the collection and use of local seeds: 120 people – including pupils, teachers, designers, farmers, producers – attended 2 technical seminars on the operation of a regreening plant and 3 different demonstrations of equipment for harvesting, threshing and sowing of local seeds. On 10.5.2023, a technical visit to the Natura 2000 site Plaine des Hurtières (Savoy, F) was also organised: The participants explored the recultivation techniques from the areas affected by the Bohemian Köterich – an exotic and particularly invasive plant – the methods of restoring the local flora. Training courses: RestHAlp+ offered a training course on natural habitat restoration techniques aimed at agronomists and forest physicians, and – in collaboration with the PNGP – a refresher course on IAS for information staff working in the park. Promoting the AlienAlp app among the population, schools and industry technicians. The problem of invasive exotic plants and the app to report them have been made known to the public as well as to a specialist audience: Two lectures were held in secondary schools, a video produced for VivaVda, a video of a television episode about the butterfly tree recorded for the TGR numerous Facebook posts were published at the IAS and AlienAlp, a speech at the “Smart Rural Network-Leader Network” (the event of the National Rural Network-Leader Network), two different training courses (one on environmental rehabilitation techniques, one specifically for IAS) and we attended meetings on invasive alien plants in Savoie Mont Blanc. Numerous Facebook posts and press releases support the most important events organised as part of the project.

Expected Results (EN):

The evaluation and the promotion of Economical Services (ES) (regulation of water, sequestration of carbon, forage and honey production, etc…) will be object of an ecological restauration. The reconstitution of the typical fauna of habitats will be assured by the fight against Exotica Invasive Species (EIS), which constitute one of the main threat to biodiversity, and to the integrity of habitat and by employment of local seeds in every operation of seedling. An innovative and adapted meccanization will be developed, and methods to define objectives of restauration and valuation of the ES. A particular attention will be dedicated to communication toward actors directly concerned by the territory management (Parks and natural reserves, administrators, professionals and industries) and to the promotion of citizen sciences by the realisation of a phone application to implied population of interested regions in the fight against EEE.

Expected Results (FR):

L’évaluation et la promotion de Services Economiques (SE) (régulation de l’eau, séquestration du carbone, production fourragère et de miel, bénéfices récréatifs etc.) feront aussi l’objet de restauration écologique. La reconstitution de la flore typique des habitats sera assurée par la lutte aux espèces exotiques envahissantes (EEE) , qui constituent une des principales menaces à la biodiversité, et à l’intégrité des habitats et par l’emploi de semences locales dans toute opération de re-semis. Une mécanisation novatrice et adaptée sera développée, ainsi que des méthodes pour définir les objectifs de restauration et évaluer les SE. Une attention spéciale sera dédiée à la communication auprès des acteurs directement concernés dans la gestion du territoire (Parcs et réserves naturelles, administrateurs, professionnels et entreprises d’aménagement) et à la promotion des sciences citoyennes par la réalisation d’une application smartphone pour impliquer la population des régions intéressées dans la lutte aux EEE.

Expected Results (IT):

La valutazione e la promozione dei Servizi Economici (SE) (regolazione dell’acqua, sequestro del carbone, produzione foraggera e di miele, etc… ) faranno anche l’oggetto di una restaurazione ecologica. La ricostituzione della fiora tipica dell’habitat sarà assicurata dal lotto alle specie esotiche invadente (SEI), che costituiscono uno dei principali minacce alla biodiversità, e all’integrità dell’habitat e dall’impiego di semenze locale in tutte le operazioni di piantina. Una meccanizzazione innovativa e adatta sarà sviluppata, anzi che dei metodi per definire gli obiettivi di restaurazione e di valutazione dei SE. Un’attenzione particolare sarà dedicata alla comunicazione presso gli attori direttamente coinvolti dalla gestione del territorio (Parchi e riserve naturali, amministratori, professionali e imprese di pianificazione) e alla promozione delle scienze cittadine per la realizzazione di un’applicazione smartphone per coinvolgere la popolazione delle regioni interessata.
