Obwohl Landwirtschaft ein Drittel der weltweiten C02 Emissionen verursacht, wird sie bei der Bekämpfung des Klimawandels meist ignoriert (UN-Env). 3% der globalen Landfläche ist mit Moorgebieten bedeckt, bestehend aus hohen Konzentrationen organischer Substanzen, die sich über Jahrhunderte ansammelten. Sie speichern 2x so viel Kohlenstoff wie alle Wälder der Erde zusammen. Europa beheimatet 265,000 km2 verschiedenster Moortypen. Falls Diese austrocknen, werden sie vom Kohlenstoffspeicher zu einem massiven, unaufhaltbaren Emitter. Carbon Connects (CConnects) reduziert C02 Emissionen um 50% in Moorgebieten, die durch traditionelle Trockenlegung zur landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung (Energiegewinnung, Pflanzen- oder Tierhaltung) unnötig hohe Emissionen verursachen (20-40 t/ha/Jahr). CConnects fördert “Nass-Landwirtschaft”, die Kohlenstoffbindung durch Anheben des Wasserspiegels oder den Anbau neuer Pflanzenarten (z.B. Rohrkolben, Schilf) befördert sowie Kohlenstoff aus Naturmaterialien (Biomasse, Baustoffe) isoliert. Durch die Entwicklung von Gutschriftensystemen für blaue Flächen/Kohlenstoff, fördert CConnects die Implementierung ohne die Notwendigkeit zusätzlicher Subventionen. CConnects entwickelt 8 Pilotprojekte in NL, FR, BE, UK, IE, die alle Moortypen in NWE repräsentieren. Die Lösungen sind relevant für 4,500,000ha Moorgebiet in NWE (größer als NL). CConnects kann so die Emissionen in NWE um 90-180M Tonnen reduzieren, entsprechend einer Abschaffung von 40-80mio Autos. CConnects transnationales “Farmer-2-Farmer” Lernprogramm macht es Landwirten möglich, ihre Erfahrung direkt weiterzugeben und mithilfe einer transnationalen Toolbox neue Landwirte zu interessieren. CConnects umfasst die 6 NWE-Länder, wobei sich jedes mit 10-20% am Budget beteiligt. 50% sind für internationale Aktivitäten, Innovation und Netzwerkpartner und für ein transnationales Austauschprogramm vorgesehen. Die Projektpartner repräsentieren Regierungen, Unternehmen, Wissenschaft und Landwirtschaft.

L’impact de l’agriculture sur le CC est négligé alors qu’il cause 1/3 des émissions mondiales de C02 (UN-Env). Les tourbières, concentrant un fort taux de matières organiques et stockant 2x plus de Carbon que l’ensemble des forêts, ne recouvrent que 3% de la surface terrestre. L’Europe compte 265k km2 de diverses tourbières, qui, si desséchées, passeront de l’état de puits de C à celui d’émetteur incoercible et massif de C. Carbon Connects (CConnects) réduira de 50% les émissions de C02 dans les tourbières où les pratiques génèrent des émissions excessives (20-40t C02/ha/an). Ces pratiques agricoles drainent et détériorent les terres pour l’énergie, la production et l’élevage. CConnects promouvra: une agriculture alternative en zones humides séquestrant le C en élevant le niveau d’eau souterrain, de nouvelles cultures (ex. Massette-quenouille, Roseau) et isolera le C dans des produits agricoles (biomass, matériaux de construction). CConnects créera aussi des modèles économiques rentables avec des circuits de vente, utilisant le crédit C et bleu pour une large implantation, reproductible sans subvention. CConnects constituera 8 sites pilotes (5-10ha) en NL, FR, BE, UK, IE, de tous les types de tourbières d’Europe du Nord-Ouest (ENO). Les solutions seront reproductibles en ENO sur 4500k ha de tourbières (plus que la surface de NL). CConnects peut réduire de 90-180M/t les émissions en ENO, (soit 40-80M de voitures). Le programme CConnects transnational farmer-2-farmer permet aux exploitants d’échanger en direct sur leurs expériences et de cibler de nouveaux utilisateurs avec la boite à outils contenant l’état de l’art en gestion et pratiques agricoles. CConnects inclut 6 pays d’ENO chacun recevant 10-20% du budget, 50% du budget est dédié aux activités transnationales pour l’innovation et le partenariat à l’international et au programme d’échange transnational innovant. Les partenaires sont issus de gouvernements, d’entreprises, de la recherche et du secteur agricole.

Agriculture is mostly ignored when countering climate change, even though it causes one third of global C02 emissions (UN-Env). 3% of the world’s land surface is covered by Peatlands, which are large concentrations of organic matter having accumulated over centuries. They store 2x as much carbon as all of Earth’s standing forests. Europe contains 265,000 km2 of various peatland types and if dried out, will go from being a carbon sink to a massive, unstoppable carbon emitter. Carbon Connects (CConnnects) will reduce C02 emissions by 50% in agricultural peatlands where traditional practices have unnecessary high emissions (20-40ton C02/ha/y). The land practices drain and strip peatland for energy use, crop production, and animal husbandry. CConnnects will promote an alternative practice of wet agriculture land use that reduces carbon by raising water levels, introducing new crops (eg. Cattail, reed), and isolating carbon in land outputs (biomass, building material). CConnnects will also develop financially viable business models by developing value chains & use blue and C-credit schemes to enable widespread implementation and scaling-up without public subsidies. CConnnects delivers 8 pilots of 3-10ha in NL, FR, BE, UK, IE, jointly representing all peatland types in NWE. Solutions are scalable in NWE to 4,500,000ha peatlands (Larger than NL). CConnnects can reduce 90-180M ton emissions in NWE, equivalent to removing 40-80 million cars. CConnnects’ transnational Farmer-2-Farmer learning programme allows land users to directly share and scale experiences, while actively targeting new adopters with a transnational toolbox of state of art land use and farming practices. CConnnects has all 6 NWE peatland countries each with 10-20% of the budget, with 50% of budget for purely transnational activities of international innovation and network partners and for the innovative transnational exchange programme. Partners are from government, business, research and landowner groups.

Expected Outputs (EN): Current NWE peatland land use practices drain 4,500,000 hectares which emit 22,500,000 tonnes of C02 per year. Per 10 cm water drop, each peatland hectare in NWE emits 5 tonnes of C02 per year.
