Η ακαδημαϊκή/ερευνητική κοινότητα χρησιμοποιεί μεγάλα κέντρα δεδομένων που καταναλώνουν πολύ ενέργεια και αυξάνουν το ενεργειακό αποτύπωμα. Το 2030 ο τομέας ΤΠΕ συνολικά θα αντιπροσωπεύει το 40% της κατανάλωσης ενέργειας και θα εκπέμπει όσο διοξείδιο του άνθρακα εκπέμπει ολόκληρη η αεροπορική βιομηχανία. Τα κέντρα δεδομένων σε πανεπιστημιουπόλεις από μόνα τους ευθύνονται για το 8-10% της κατανάλωσης ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος. Στην Ελλάδα και στην Κύπρο, τα Πανεπιστήμια λειτουργούν κέντρα δεδομένων ενώ το Ενεργειακό Δίκτυο Έρευνας και Τεχνολογίας (ΕΔΕΤ) έχει εγκαταστήσει και λειτουργεί τα τρία μεγαλύτερα datacenters, της Ελλάδας, που εξυπηρετούν μεταξύ άλλων και τις ανάγκες δεκάδων νοσοκομείων. Οι ενεργειακές ανάγκες των πανεπιστήμιων Κρήτης και Κύπρου αποτελούν σημαντικό τμήμα του λειτουργικού τους κόστους και παρά τα μέτρα που λαμβάνονται η κατανάλωση ενέργειας παραμένει υψηλή. Επίσης, η γεωγραφική θέση τόσο της Κρήτης, όσο και της Κύπρου, ευνοεί τις υψηλές θερμοκρασίες το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του έτους κάνοντας αναγκαία τη χρήση συστημάτων απαγωγής θερμότητας στα κέντρα δεδομένων. Ταυτόχρονα όμως, οι μεγάλες περίοδοι ηλιοφάνειας ευνοούν την παραγωγή ρεύματος μέσω φωτοβολταϊκών διατάξεων. Για το λόγο αυτό και δεδομένης της σταθερής αύξησης της ζήτησης, οι 3 δημόσιοι φορείς προτείνουν να προχωρήσουν από κοινού σε παρεμβάσεις εξοικονόμησης ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας και παραγωγής ΑΠΕ, ενταγμένες σε μια ευρύτερη στρατηγική εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας και περιβαλλοντικής ευαισθητοποίησης της ακαδημαϊκής κοινότητας και του ευρύτερου δημόσιου τομέα. Στόχος του έργου είναι να μελετήσει και να εφαρμόσει μεθόδους μεγιστοποίησης ενεργειακής απόδοσης, έξυπνης διαχείρισης ενέργειας με κατάλληλη διαμόρφωση των φορτίων που δημιουργεί η λειτουργία των υπολογιστικών και αποθηκευτικών συστημάτων των κέντρων δεδομένων, καθώς και την μελέτη και εγκατάσταση φωτοβολταϊκών για τη παραγωγή μέρους της αναγκαίας ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας.Το έργο προτείνει την εισαγωγή καθαρών τεχνολογιών με την εγκατάσταση ΑΠΕ υποστηρίζοντας τη μετάβαση προς μια οικονομία χαμηλών εκπομπών διοξειδίου του άνθρακα στον απαιτητικό τομέα των κέντρων δεδομένων – ΤΠΕ για τις ανάγκες της εκπαίδευσης και έρευνας.

Description (EN):

The academic / research community uses large data centers that consume a lot of energy and increase the energy footprint. In 2030, the ICT sector will account for 40% of total energy consumption and will emit as much carbon dioxide emitted by the entire aviation industry. Data centers on university campuses alone account for 8-10% of the electricity consumption. In Greece and Cyprus, Universities operate data centers, while the Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET) installed and operates the three largest datacenters in Greece that serve, amongst other, the needs of dozens of hospitals. The energy needs of the Universities of Crete and Cyprus are an important part of their operating costs and despite the measures taken energ consumption remains high. On the other hand, both locations, Crete and Cyprus favors high temperatures for the most part of the year, making it necessary to use heat dissipation systems in data centers. At the same time, long periods of sunshine favor the generation of electricity through photovoltaic devices. For this reason, and given steady increase in demand, the three public bodies propose to move together on energy saving and RES generation interventions, as part of a wider energy saving and environmental awareness strategy for the academic community and the wider public sector. The aim of the project is to study and implement methods for maximizing energy efficiency, intelligent energy management with the appropriate configuration of the loads created by the operation of computing and storage systems of data centers, as well as the study and installation of photovoltaics for the production of part of the necessary electricity. The project proposes the introduction of clean technologies through the installation of RES by supporting the transition to a low carbon economy in the demanding area of ICT - data centers for education and research needs.

Expected Results (EL):

Τα αναμενόμενα αποτελέσματα αφορούν την μείωση των εκπεμπόμενων αερίων του θερμοκηπίου και της ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης στη διασυνοριακή περιοχή και συγκεκριμένα σε Ηράκλειο και Λευκωσία. Η προμελέτη που διενεργήθηκε στη φάση προετοιμασίας υποβολής της πρότασης, εκτιμά ότι η υλοποίηση του έργου θα οδηγήσει σε 400.000 KWh ετήσια εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας, που αντιστοιχεί περίπου σε 400 τόνους CO2 και ετήσιο οικονομικό όφελος της τάξεως των 40.000 ευρώ. Επιπλέον, η εγκατάσταση φωτοβολταικών για τη παραγωγή μέρους της απαιτούμενης ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας αυξάνει το ποσοστό συνεισφοράς στην παραγωγή ενέργειας από ΑΠΕ. Επίσης εκτός από τον περιορισμό της ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης και τη συνεισφορά στην αναστροφή της κλιματικής αλλαγής, η υλοποίηση του έργου θα έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα και τη μείωση των λειτουργικών εξόδων των εμπλεκόμενων φορέων. Τέλος, η λειτουργία των μηχανισμών που θα εφαρμοστούν στο πλαίσιο του έργου θα προσφέρει και τη δυνατότητα παροχής εφεδρείας σε περιπτώσεις βλαβών (disaster recovery).

Expected Results (EN):

Εxpected results relate to the reduction of greenhouse gases and air pollution in the cross-border area, namely in Heraklion and Nicosia. The preliminary study, undertaken during the project application phase, estimates that implementation of the project will lead to 400,000 KWh annual energy savings, equivalent to about 400 tonnes of CO2 and an annual economic benefit of 40,000 euros. In addition, the installation of photovoltaics increases the required energy production from RES. Apart from limiting air pollution and contributing to the RES, the project will also contribute to lower operating costs for stakeholders. Finally, the operation of the mechanisms to be implemented under the project will also offer the possibility of 'disaster recovery' following eventual damages.

Expected Outputs (EL):

1) Συλλογή/ανάλυση δεδομένων κατανάλωσης ενέργειας: πρόκειται για ένα εξαιρετικά σημαντικό στάδιο στην λήψη ορθών αποφάσεων δεδομένου ότι παρέχει τα απαραίτητα στοιχεία για τον στρατηγικό σχεδιασμό και την αποφυγή αποσπασματικών παρεμβάσεων. 2) Δράσεις «συνολικού ενεργειακού σχεδιασμού» (whole building design) για δημόσια κτίρια που ενδεικτικά περιλαμβάνει: • Μελέτη εγκατάστασης ΑΠΕ και συστημάτων έξυπνης ενεργειακής διαχείρισης με ανάλυση των απαιτήσεων σε τεχνικό και νομικό αδειοδοτικό επίπεδο για τα ανωτέρω συστήματα. • Εγκατάσταση και λειτουργία συστημάτων ΑΠΕ και συστημάτων έξυπνης ενεργειακής διαχείρισης σε 3 δημόσια κτίρια: 2 συγκροτήματα κτιρίων του πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης στο Ηράκλειο και 1 συγκρότημα του πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου στη Λευκωσία. • Δημιουργία βάσης δεδομένων ενεργειακών επιδόσεων δημοσίων κτιρίων. • Απεικόνιση αποτελεσμάτων σε GIS. • Διασύνδεση των κέντρων μεταξύ τους, συνδυασμό των μεθόδων και μηχανισμών βελτιστοποίησης της ενεργειακής απόδοσης και επίτευξης των απαραίτητων συνεργιών σε ένα ευρύτερο σύνολο δημοσίων κτιρίων με στόχο την μείωση της κατανάλωσης και του κόστους ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας. • Μελέτη συμβολής του έργου στην εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας (προκυπτόμενο όφελος ανά δημόσιο ίδρυμα) και τα συνολικά κοινωνικο-οικονομικά οφέλη. 3) Εκροές για την δημοσιότητα του έργου, τόσο στο ευρύ κοινό, όσο και στην ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα: • δημιουργία και λειτουργία ιστοσελίδας και λογαριασμών στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, • δημιουργία και διανομή έντυπου υλικού, • επιστημονικές δημοσιεύσεις, ανακοινώσεις και δελτία τύπου. • διοργάνωση 2 ενημερωτικών ημερίδων στα πανεπιστήμια Κρήτης και Κύπρου.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1) Collection / analysis of energy consumption data: this is an extremely important stage as it provides the necessary data for strategic planning in order to avoid fragmentary interventions. 2) "whole building design" for public buildings, which includes: • Design of RES installation and smart energy management systems with analysis of requirements at technical and legal licensing level for the above systems. • Installation and operation of RES systems and intelligent energy management systems in 3 public buildings: 2 building complexes of the University of Crete in Heraklion and 1 building complex of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. • Creating an energy performance database for public buildings. • Displaying results in GIS. • Linking the centers to each other, combining the methods and mechanisms to optimize energy efficiency and achieving the necessary synergies in a wider set of public buildings to reduce electricity consumption and subsequent costs. • Study of the contribution of the project to energy saving (resulting benefit per public institution) and the overall socio-economic benefits. 3) Project's communication and publicity outputs, for both, the general public and the academic community: • creating and running project web page and accounts in social media, • creation and distribution of printed material, • scientific publications, announcements and press releases. • organizing 2 information days: at the universities of Crete and Cyprus.
