Die steigende Abhängigkeit Österreichs und Tschechiens von Rohstoffimporten zeigt deutlich die Endlichkeit diverser Rohstoffe auf. Zudem führen Preisschwankungen zu einer unberechenbaren Marktsituation bei den Rohstoffen. Daher ist die Entwicklung von Alternativkonzepten, um die Versorgung mit kritischen Rohstoffen wie den in diesem Projekt behandelten Metallen zu sichern, von entscheidender Bedeutung für eine langfristige wirtschaftliche Stabilität. Als bedeutende Sekundärrohstoffquellen stellen sich Aschen und Schlacken dar. In Österreich gibt es 11 Anlagen für thermische Behandlung von Siedlungsabfällen, davon sind 5 Anlagen in den Regionen NÖ und OÖ. In diesen 5 Anlagen werden knapp 63% des Gesamtmülls Österreichs verbrannt, und dadurch fielen ca. 330.000 t (2015) Aschen und Schlacke an. Eine zusätzliche interessante Ressource, die in OÖ anfällt, ist LD-Schlacke aus der Stahlindustrie. In Tschechien betrug das kommunale Abfallaufkommen 5,32 Mio t (2014). Die Abfallbehandlung umfasste knapp 48% Deponierung, 40% Recycling (einschließlich Kompostierung) und 12% Verbrennung. Insgesamt gibt es 4 Müllverbrennungsanlagen in Tschechien, wobei sich eine davon in der Region Süd-Mähren befindet. Die Menge an Schlacke und Bettasche belief sich auf 157.000 t im Jahr 2015, welche bislang ausschließlich der Deponierung zugeführt wird. Hinzu kommt, dass bis zum Jahr 2025 die Errichtung von 5 weiteren Anlagen geplant und dementsprechend das Aufkommen von Aschen und Schlacken ansteigt. Das Hauptziel des Projektes IRAS ist die Entwicklung eines neuen biometallurgischen Prozesses, der eine innovative, umweltfreundliche und energiearme Gewinnung von Schwermetallen wie zum Beispiel Kupfer (Cu), Zink (Zn), Kobalt (Co), oder Chrom (Cr) aus sekundären Rohstoffen ermöglicht. Zu diesem Zweck werden die Metalle durch spezielle Bakterien (wie Acidithiobacillus und Leptospirillum) aus der festen Matrix gelöst und durch einen bioelektrochemischen Prozess abgetrennt. Die direkte Kopplung dieser beiden biotechnologischen Prozesse kann als Grundlage der Innovation in diesem Projekt angesehen werden. Als Ergebnisse können folgende Punkte angeführt werden: 1) Entwicklung eines Bioleachingprozesses zur Metallentfrachtung von Aschen und Schlacken, 2) Entwicklung eines bioelektrochemischen Prozesses für die Metall-Rückgewinnung, 3) Kombiniertes Verfahren Bioleaching und bioelektrochemische Metall-Rückgewinnung. Der grenzüberschreitende Ansatz ist notwendig, da die österreichischen Partner K1-MET und BOKU Know-How im Aufbau von Bioleaching Versuchen sowie in der Bioelektrochemie haben und der tschechische Partner MU jahrelange Expertise mit den speziellen Bakterien hat. Der Zugang zu der Zielgruppe der Unternehmen wird über den zweiten tschechischen Partner EAV und den österreichischen Partner K1-MET sichergestellt. Die Ergebnisse sind für die Entsorgungsbranche und dem Hütten- und Stahlwesen interessant und tragen zur Ressourcenschonung bei.

Rostoucí závislost Rakouska a České republiky na dovozu surovin výrazně poukazuje na konečnost některých z nich. Cenové výkyvy vedou kromě toho k nevypočitatelné situaci na trhu se surovinami. Proto má vývoj alternativních koncepcí rozhodující význam pro dlouhodobou hospodářskou stabilitu, aby se zajistilo zásobování kritickými surovinami, jako jsou kovy, o jejichž zpracování se v tomto projektu jedná. Významné zdroje druhotných surovin představují popely a strusky. V Rakousku existuje 11 zařízení pro termické zpracování komunálního odpadu, z toho se 5 zařízení nachází v Dolním a Horním Rakousku. V těchto 5 zařízeních se spaluje téměř 63% veškerého rakouského odpadu, a v důsledku toho vzniká cca 330 000 t (2015) popelů a strusek. Dodatečným zajímavým zdrojem je v Horním Rakousku LD-struska z ocelářského průmyslu. V ČR činil objem komunálního odpadu 5,32 mil. t (2014). Nakládání s odpady činilo téměř 48% odpadu uloženého na skládkách, 40% recyklace (včetně kompostování) a 12% spalování. V ČR existují celkem 4 spalovny odpadu, přičemž jedna z nich v Jihomoravském kraji. Množství strusky a popela, které se dosud výhradně ukládá na skládkách, činilo 157 000 t v roce 2015. Další skutečností je, že do roku 2025 je plánováno 5 dalších zařízení, a v důsledku toho se zvýší objem popelů a strusek. Hlavním cílem projektu IRAS je vývoj nového biometalurgického procesu, který umožní inovativní, ekologické a energeticky nenáročné získávání těžkých kovů, jako jsou olovo (Cu), zinek (Zn), kobalt (Co) nebo chrom (Cr) z druhotných surovin. Za tímto účelem se budou kovy uvolňovat z pevné matrice pomocí speciálních bakterií (jako jsou Acidithiobacillus a Leptospirillum) a oddělovat pomocí bioelektrochemického procesu. Přímou vazbu obou těchto biotechnologických procesů lze považovat za základ inovace v tomto projektu. Jako výsledky lze uvést tyto body: 1) vývoj procesu biologického loužení pro oddělení kovů z popelů a strusek, 2) vývoj bioelektrochemického procesu opětovného získání kovů, 3) kombinovaný postup bioleachingu a bioelektrochemického opětovného získání kovů. Přeshraniční přístup je nezbytný, protože rakouští partneři K1-MET a BOKU mají know-how jak ve struktuře pokusů bioleachingu, tak také v bioelektrochemii a český partner MU provádí dlouholeté expertizy se speciálními bakteriemi. Přístup k cílové skupině podniků bude zajištěn prostřednictvím druhého českého partnera EAV a rakouského partnera K1-MET. Výsledky jsou zajímavé pro odvětví likvidace odpadů a hutnictví a ocelářství a přispívají k úspoře zdrojů.

The growing dependence of Austria and the Czech Republic on imports of raw material clearly shows the finite nature of various raw materials. In addition, price fluctuations lead to an unpredictable market situation for these materials. Therefore, the development of alternative approaches to ensure the supply of critical raw materials, such as the metals treated in this project, is crucial for long-term economic stability. Ash and slag are important secondary sources of raw materials. In Austria, there are 11 plants for the thermal treatment of municipal waste, of which 5 are in Lower and Upper Austria. Almost 63% of Austria's total waste is incinerated in these 5 plants, causing about 330,000 tonnes (2015) of ashes and slag. An additional interesting resource that originates in Upper Austria is LD slag from the steel industry. Municipal waste in the Czech Republic was 5.32 million tonnes (2014). Waste treatment included nearly 48% landfill, 40% recycling (including composting) and 12% incineration. In total there are 4 waste incineration plants in the Czech Republic, one of which is located in South Moravia. The amount of slag and bed ash was 157,000 t in 2015, which until now has been exclusively landfilled. In addition, by the year 2025, the construction of 5 further plants is planned and accordingly the amount of ashes and slags will increase. The main objective of the IRAS project is the development of a new biometallurgical process that allows an innovative, environmentally friendly and low-energy extraction of heavy metals such as copper, zinc, cobalt, or chromium from secondary raw materials. For this purpose, the metals are released from the solid matrix by special bacteria (such as Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum) and separated by a bioelectrochemical process. The direct connection of these two biotechnological processes can be seen as the basis of innovation in this project. These are the results: 1) Development of a bioleaching process for metal removal in ashes and slags 2) Development of a bioelectrochemical process for metal recovery 3) Combined process of bioleaching and bioelectrochemical metal recovery. The cross-border approach is necessary as the Austrian partners K1-MET and BOKU have know-how in setting up bioleaching experiments as well as in bioelectrochemistry, whereas the Czech partner MU has many years of expertise with the special bacteria. Access to the target group of companies is ensured through the second Czech partner EAV and the Austrian partner K1-MET. The results are of interest to the waste disposal industry and the metallurgical and steel industry and contribute to resource saving.

Expected Outputs (DE):

Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse im Projekt IRAS sind die Entwicklung einer innovativen Metallentfrachtung von Aschen und Schlacken und ein Knowhow-Transfer im Bereich Abfallmanagement. Die Entwicklung dieses innovativen Metallrückgewinnungsprozesses bewirkt eine Detoxifizierung der Aschen und Schlacken und somit könnten diese Abfälle wieder einer Nutzung (z.B. als Baumaterial) zugeführt werden und müssen nicht mehr deponiert werden. Somit kommt es zu einer Verminderung der Deponiemenge und auch die Gefährdung der Umwelt durch eine mögliche Auswaschung von Schwermetallen wird reduziert. Aus umwelttechnischer Sicht ist auch die Erhöhung der Recyclingquoten wichtig, da damit die Primärförderung von Rohstoffen teilweise substituiert und bereits abgebautes Material wiederverwertet wird anstelle der Zerstörung von Gebieten mit noch intaktem Ökosystem.

Expected Outputs (CS):

Nejdůležitějšími výsledky projektu IRAS je vývoj inovativního oddělení kovů z popelů a strusek a přenos know-how v oblasti odpadového managementu. Vývoj tohoto inovativního procesu zpětného získávání kovů způsobí detoxikaci popelů a strusek, a tak by bylo možné tyto odpady opět využívat (např. jako stavební materiál), a nemusely by se ukládat na skládkách. Díky tomu dojde ke snížení množství materiálu ukládaného na skládkách a rovněž snížení ohrožení životního prostředí v důsledku možného vymývání těžkých kovů. Z hlediska environmentální technologie je také důležité zvýšení recyklačního podílu, protože se tím nahradí primární těžba surovin a opětovně se využije již vytěžený materiál namísto ničení oblastí s ještě neporušeným ekosystémem.
