Description (EN): IN FLOW is an innovative cross-border R&D project involving 4 EMR cutting-edge partners in the fields of biochemical product formulation, characterization and engineering. The main R&D challenge of IN FLOW is to introduce new formulation technologies that allow fast and cheap degradable packaging of e.g. drugs in pills or creams. Our applied methodologies will allow companies to create novel high potential products for e.g. health- and personal care industry.
The current IN FLOW knowledge (TRL3) has partly been created within the Interreg IV-A EMR project BioMIMedics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NffDdD1WKQ), involving strong collaboration of 3 of the current partners. The knowledge and technology that will be developed in IN FLOW (TRL6) provides public and private actors full advantages to fasten market introduction of their products. Our IN FLOW technology makes use of sophisticated in-house designed devices and know-how to create novel product formulations of (bio)degradable carriers loaded with ingredients with high efficiency. These carriers can be used as compounds in end-products like pills with direct applicability in healthcare, nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
The 3 main IN FLOW objectives are:
1- The development of the IN FLOW Community and Open Technology Platform: To ensure sustainability of the IN FLOW technologies, an Open Technology Platform will be established. This Platform includes all technology, protocols, and formulations of the IN FLOW portfolio. All IN FLOW hardware and facilities required for end-product production and validation will be made available for collaboration with companies, during and after the running-time of the project through this platform.
2- Creation of knowledge, infrastructure and best practice: Our second objective is to develop the IN FLOW R&D infrastructure, technologies and protocols for the production of the biodegradable carriers. By focusing on product innovation with a market-driven R&D approach (TRL3-TRL6) and investments in facilities and protocols to upscale production to industrial level (kg-scale), a strong asset for supporting industrial R&D and market introduction is secured.
3- Creation of final products following public-private innovation trajectories: IN FLOW R&D revolves around 7 innovation trajectories with IN FLOW technology being applied to synthesize degradable biomaterials that answer to market demands of end-users. The trajectories will be defined and managed in WPT1 by the trajectory teams (IN FLOW partners and companies). 7 companies from 4 EMR regions already expressed their interest (signed letter of interest; see attachments) and will be prime candidates. Also an Advisory Board (AB), open to companies willing to participate, is established and provides basis for the open technology platform. The trajectories will be executed by WPT2-T5 in collaboration with external actor(s). The Steering Committee (SC; IN FLOW partners), will define the trajectories and teams and provides the ‘go’ for end-products to be upscaled to kg-scale, ready for market testing (TRL6-TRL7). Interaction between all actors provides basis for R&D that will generate and enhance cross-border synergies.
Prime aim of IN FLOW is to bring the key enabling IN FLOW technology to TRL6 level, providing the following outputs:
1- Implementation of IN FLOW technology at industrial level. Successful transfer of the formulation technology, from the academic laboratory to the industrial (kg) scale;
2- Providing preparation solutions/protocols at the level of precursors and carriers ((bio)degradable polymers) syntheses, and the formulation/loading of carriers with active compounds.
3- Biofunctional/safety evaluation of carriers and end formulations in view of their specific applications.
4- Production of 2 end products at kg-scale with high potential for market testing (TRL7).
5- Creation of EMR Community and IN FLOW open technology platform with production facilities at the Academic Centres (technology transfer) with sustainable value for all and allowing training of workers and students (knowledge transfer).
Added value of the cross-border collaboration for IN FLOW is provided by the BioMIMedics TRL3 input generated by RWTH DWI, CERM ULiège and UM. In continuing this cross-border collaboration and enforcing the industrialization potential by partnering with Sirris, a strong consortium is created. Via a market-driven approach (trajectories), defined by private end-users (SMEs) through the open technology platform, IN FLOW will create innovative products and technologies. By combining unique EMR know-how, technologies and state-of-the-art infrastructures in an open innovation platform, IN FLOW proactively creates synergy for higher scale capacity for all actors.
Read more Description (FR): IN FLOW est un projet R&D innovant regroupant 4 partenaires de pointe de l’EMR pour la formulation, la caractérisation et l´ingénierie de produits biochimiques. Son principal défi est d´introduire de nouvelles technologies d’emballage dégradable pour la formulation rapide et bon marché, par ex., de principes actifs dans des pilules ou des crèmes. Nos méthodologies appliquées permettront a entreprises de créer de nouveaux produits à fort potentiel pour, notamment l´industrie des soins de santé et des soins aux personnes.
La connaissance actuelle (TRL3) résulte partiellement d’un précédent projet Interreg IV-A BioMIMedics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NffDdD1WKQ) ayant impliqué une collaboration forte de 3 des partenaires d’IN FLOW. Les connaissances et la technologie IN FLOW (TRL6) permettront aux acteurs publics et privés l´introduction plus rapide de leurs produits sur le marché. Notre technologie utilise des dispositifs et un savoir-faire de pointe conçus en interne pour créer de nouvelles formulations (bio)dégradables encapsulant un ingrédient actif. Ces capsules peuvent être utilisées dans des produits finaux tels que des pilules, pour les domaines d’application de l’industrie de la santé, nutraceutique, cosmétique et pharmaceutique.
Les 3 principaux objectifs de IN FLOW sont les suivants:
1- Pour assurer la pérennité des technologies, une plateforme technologique ouverte sera mise en place, incluant technologie, protocoles et formulations du portefeuille IN FLOW. Tous les équipements et installations nécessaires à la production et à la validation du produit final seront mis à disposition pour la collaboration avec les entreprises, pendant et après l´exécution du projet via cette plateforme.
2- Notre second objectif est de développer l´infrastructure, les technologies et les protocoles R&D pour la production de capsules biodégradables. En mettant l´accent sur l´innovation avec une approche R&D axée sur le marché (TRL3-TRL6) et des investissements dans les installations et protocoles de production à l´échelle industrielle, nous assurons un réel soutien R&D aux industries pour l´introduction des produits sur le marché.
3- Le R&D s´articule autour de 7 trajectoires, la technologie étant appliquée pour synthétiser des biomatériaux dégradables répondant aux demandes des utilisateurs finaux. Les trajectoires seront définies et gérées dans le WPT1 par les partenaires et entreprises. 7 entreprises de 4 régions de l’EMR ont déjà exprimé leur intérêt (lettre en annexe) et seront les principales candidates. L´Advisory Board (AB), ouvert aux entreprises constitue la base d´une plateforme technologique ouverte. Les trajectoires seront exécutées par les WPT2-T5 en collaboration avec des acteurs externes. Le Steering Committee (SC, partenaires IN FLOW) définira les trajectoires et équipes et fournira le «go» pour la production des produits finaux à l´échelle du kg, prêts à être testés sur le marché (TRL6-TRL7). L´interaction entre tous les acteurs fournit une base en R&D qui générera et améliorera les synergies transfrontalières.
L´objectif principal de IN FLOW est d´amener la technologie IN FLOW au niveau TRL6, en fournissant les résultats suivants:
1- Mise en œuvre de la technologie IN FLOW au niveau industriel : transfert efficace de cette technologie du laboratoire académique à l´échelle industrielle (kg).
2- Fournir des solutions / protocoles de préparation des précurseurs et des capsules (polymères biodégradables), et la formulation / encapsulation des composés actifs.
3- Evaluation biofonctionnelle / de sécurité des capsules et des formulations finales en vue de leur application spécifique.
4- Production de 2 produits finaux à l´échelle du kg avec un potentiel élevé pour des tests sur le marché (TRL7).
5- Création d’une communauté dans l’EMR et d’une plateforme technologique ouverte IN FLOW avec des installations de production dans les centres académiques (transfert de technologie) avec une valeur durable pour tous et permettant la formation des travailleurs et des étudiants.
La valeur ajoutée de la collaboration transfrontalière est fournie par l’apport de BioMIMedics TRL3 créé par RWTH DWI, CERM ULiège et UM. En prolongeant cette collaboration et en renforçant le potentiel d´industrialisation en s´associant avec Sirris, un consortium fort est assuré. Par l’approche axée sur le marché, définie par les utilisateurs finaux privés (PME) à travers la plateforme, IN FLOW créera des produits et technologies innovants. En combinant le savoir-faire, les technologies et les infrastructures de pointe de l’EMR dans une plateforme d´innovation ouverte, IN FLOW crée de manière proactive une synergie à plus grande échelle pour tous les acteurs.

Die Hauptaufgabe von IN FLOW besteht darin, eine neue Formulierungstechnologie einzuführen, die eine schnelle und kostengünstige Verkapselung von aktiven Substanzen ermöglicht. Die eingesetzten Methoden können Unternehmen nutzen, um neue Produkte z.B. für die Gesundheits- und Körperpflegeindustrie zu entwickeln.
Das aktuelle IN FLOW-Wissen (TRL3) wurde zum Teil im Rahmen des Interreg IV-A EMR-Projektes BioMIMedics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NffDdDD1WKQ) erarbeitet, in dem 3 der derzeitigen Partner eng zusammenarbeiteten. Das Wissen und die Technologie, die in IN FLOW (TRL6) entwickelt werden, bieten öffentlichen und privaten Akteuren umfassende Vorteile, um die Markteinführung ihrer Produkte zu beschleunigen. Unsere Technologie nutzt innovative Anlagen und Know-how, um neuartige Produktformulierungen zu entwickeln. Die Träger können als Compounds in Endprodukten mit direkter Anwendbarkeit in der Gesundheits-, Nutrazeutika-, Kosmetik- und Pharmaindustrie eingesetzt werden.
Die 3 Hauptziele von IN FLOW sind:
1- Die Entwicklung der IN FLOW Community und der Open Technology Plattform:
Um die Nachhaltigkeit der IN FLOW-Technologien zu gewährleisten, wird eine offene Technologieplattform eingerichtet. Diese Plattform umfasst alle Technologien und Protokolle des IN FLOW-Portfolios. Alle IN FLOW-Hardware und -Einrichtungen, die für die Produktion und Validierung der Endprodukte erforderlich sind, werden für die Zusammenarbeit mit Unternehmen während und nach der Laufzeit des Projekts über diese Plattform zur Verfügung gestellt.
2- Schaffung von Wissen, Infrastruktur und Best Practice:
Unser zweites Ziel ist es, die IN FLOW F&E-Infrastruktur, Technologien und Protokolle für die Produktion der degradierbaren Träger zu entwickeln. Durch die Fokussierung auf Produktinnovationen mit einem marktorientierten F&E-Ansatz (TRL3-TRL6) und Anlagen und Protokolle zur Produktion auf industriellem Niveau (kg-Skala) wird ein starker Aktivposten zur Unterstützung industrieller F&E gesichert.
3- Herstellung von Endprodukten in öffentlich-privaten Innovationspfaden (Trajektorien):
IN FLOW F&E konzentriert sich auf 7 Innovationspfade (Trajektorien), wobei die IN FLOW-Technologie zur Synthese von abbaubaren Biomaterialien eingesetzt wird, die den Marktanforderungen der Endnutzer entsprechen. Die Trajektorien werden in WPT1 von den Trajektorienteams (IN FLOW-Partner und Unternehmen) definiert. Sieben Unternehmen aus vier EMR-Regionen haben bereits ihr Interesse bekundet (s. Anlagen) und werden die ersten Mitglieder sein. Ein Beirat (Advisory Board, AB), der für beteiligungswillige Unternehmen offen ist, wird eingerichtet und bildet die Basis für die offene Technologieplattform. Die Trajektorien werden von WPT2-T5 in Zusammenarbeit mit externen Akteuren durchgeführt. Der Lenkungsausschuss (Steering Commitee, SC) legt die Trajektorien fest und wählt die Endprodukte aus, die auf kg-Skala skaliert und marktreif getestet werden (TRL6-TRL7). Die Interaktion zwischen allen Akteuren bildet die Grundlage für F&E, die grenzüberschreitende Synergien erzeugen und verstärken wird.
Oberstes Ziel von IN FLOW ist es, die Schlüsseltechnologie IN FLOW auf TRL6-Niveau zu bringen und die folgenden Ergebnisse (Outputs) zu liefern:
1- Implementierung der IN FLOW-Technologie auf industrieller Ebene. Erfolgreicher Transfer der Formulierungstechnologie vom Labor in den industriellen Maßstab (kg);
2- Bereitstellung von Produkten/Protokollen auf der Ebene der Ausgangsstoffe und der Formulierung/Beladung der Träger mit Wirkstoffen.
3- Biofunktionale/Sicherheitsevaluierung von Trägern und Endformulierungen im Hinblick auf ihre spezifischen Anwendungen.
4- Produktion von 2 Endprodukten im kg-Maßstab mit hohem Marktpotenzial (TRL7).
5- Schaffung von einer offenen Technologieplattform In Flow und einer EMR Community mit Produktionsstätten in den akademischen Zentren (Technologietransfer) mit nachhaltigem Mehrwert für die Allgemeinheit und der Möglichkeit der Ausbildung (Wissenstransfer).
Der Mehrwert der grenzüberschreitenden Zusammenarbeit für IN FLOW wird durch den BioMIMedics TRL3 Input der Partner erbracht. Durch die Fortführung dieser grenzüberschreitenden Zusammenarbeit und die Stärkung des Industrialisierungspotenzials durch eine Partnerschaft mit Sirris entsteht ein starkes Konsortium. Durch einen marktorientierten Ansatz (Trajektorien) unter Einbindung von privaten Endnutzern (KMU) über die offene Technologieplattform, wird IN FLOW Innovation schaffen. Durch die Kombination von einzigartigem EMR-Know-how, Technologien und modernsten Infrastrukturen in einer offenen Innovationsplattform schafft IN FLOW proaktiv Synergieeffekte für alle Akteure.

2. Porous silica formulation platform:
Design of functional porous silica formulations for efficient compound in dedicated applications, e.g. feed or cosmetics (TRL 5-6 product)
3. Flow formulation platform for biosafe polymer microspheres:
Flow production of polymer (incl. FDA approved) microspheres loaded with various active ingredients and optimal biosafety, e.g. radiopaque microspheres for in vivo imaging/medical applications (TRL 5-6 product).

Expected Outputs (EN): IN FLOW gives direct input to the Interreg output indicators PSI10, CO026, C028 and C029 as indicated below. IN FLOW provides innovative technological solutions for market demanded complex and highly valuable carriers (degradable particles) that can be easily modified and loaded with all types of compounds at high efficiency and with excellent potential for up-scaling at low costs. The emerging flow technology as executed within IN FLOW holds high potential for new product development by many EMR located companies on food, chemistry, applied bio-, medical and life sciences, both for essential prototyping of R&D applications as well as the production of end-product that can enter the market (C029). A unique network on knowledge, expertise and infrastructure connected cross-border through IN FLOW potentiates opportunities for public-private R&D (PSI10) on these new emerging chemical formulations by making use of flow technologies and special (bio)functionality testing options. The open IN FLOW platform on flow technologies and related hardware (reactors), chemicals (monomers, polymers), their processing and loading plus high tech protocols and assay to validate and test their (bio)functionality in itself is highly innovative and will be made available for collaboration via the In Flow portfolio. To drive the transition of our IN FLOW innovative technology from lab environment closer to market (TRL3 to TRL6), market oriented public-private collaborations will be initiated through 7 trajectories. These unique trajectories allow private actors to embark on industrial R&D with low risk and best opportunities to fully deploy the innovative portfolio (materials, infrastructure and services) of IN FLOW to create new end products to meet their special demands (C029).
