Description
Description (EN): CHALLENGES ADDRESSED:
In the hospitals and care centers, patients have to be hooked up to many devices in order to monitor vital parameters such as temperature, heart rate, O2 saturation... In addition, nurses have to perform a lot of manipulations to collect and record data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), preventing them to really taking care of them patients. The challenge addressed by this project is to bring back the patient at the heart of the health care system, and guarantee an optimal follow up of the patient during his hospitalization. This will be achieved by simplifying the collection, integration and processing of the monitoring data.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
The objective of the project is the creation of a wearable multi sensor monitoring device that is confortable for the hospitalized patients and compatible with the IT infrastructure of the different hospitals of the Euregio Meuse Rhin. The monitoring device that will be developed will record medical data and analyse it in order to help the medical team to take the most adequate decision for the patient. It will also be able to inform of risk situation via alarms. The final monitoring device specification will be a co-creation between the technology providers and the hospital users. It will be based on existing inputs of the partners mostly at TRL4 but also some at TRL3 (sensors, wearable substrates, ultra low power hardware, data treatment algorithms).
The objective is to get a monitoring device validated/demonstrated in relevant environment, in this case in hospital on test subjects (that can be volunteers, healthy people, carefully selected group of patients, not as part of their daily care but as part of unique research), and on which all the certification constraints will have been taken into account. The final TRL of the monitoring device will be end of TRL5 or beginning of TRL6.
The project will focus on the hospital environment and take into account the reality of patients and nurses. The hospitals will therefore play a crucial role in the specifications of the monitoring device, its validation and its integration into their infrastructure.
The targeted patients are the ones who aren’t under constant monitoring (80% in CHU Liège). Aside hospitalized patients, additional applications of the system are, by priority order:
use at home for telemedicine, use in retirement homes, use in paediatrics, use in non medical situations: sport, high risk work conditions…
ACTIVITIES:
1. Coordination (WP1) and Communication (WP2): all along the project: reporting, financial management, interfacing and creation of the communication support.
2. Knowledge-gathering (WP3): 2 months to write down an exhaustive list of the shared needs and technological constraints of hospitals from the three different countries. The activity will result through co-creation sessions in a strong specification and certification roadmap.
3. Sensors (WP4): identification and test of sensors already available on the market and development of sensors from TRL4 (3) available at the partners, mainly textile sensors. The activity will result in a list of sensors (with their specification) to integrate into the wearable monitoring device.
4. Wearable monitoring device (WP5): development of the electronic hardware, the embedded software and the textile wearable substrate. Assembly and packaging of these components into the wearable monitoring device which will constitute the main output of this activity. The data concentrator, acting as a secured interface between the wearable device and the hospital IT infrastructure will also be designed in WP5.
5. Data transfer, treatment and analysis (WP6): data transfer will be done with the following as main objectives: reliability, data security and low power operation. The second task is to write, implement and validate the algorithms which will extract the useful information from the data. The final task is to deliver the software bundle which will integrate this information to the patient’s Electronic Medical Record.
6. Test and validation (WP7): the project certification check will be performed during year 3. Intensive test on test subjects (volunteers, …) of the system and its integration into hospital IT infrastructure will be performed to check the validity and the acceptance of the prototype.
EXPECTED RESULTS AND OUTPUTS:
-A common Euregional Specification to cover the real needs of the hospitals of the Euregio Meuse Rhine.
-An ultra low power, comfortable, ergonomic and economically affordable multi sensor wearable monitoring device (along with a data concentrator) validated/demonstrated on volunteers in hospital environment (TRL 5 or beginning TRL 6).
- A portfolio of software for data acquisition, data treatment, secured data transfer and link to the Electronic Medical Record.
-A network of companies/SMEs and technology transfer offices from each region to further prepare the production and commercialisation of this prototype and other wearable developments.
This project can have a major impact on the Society, larger than only in the Euregio Meuse Rhine but also in the complete Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, which is about 100 million of potential patients.
ADDED VALUE OF COOPERATION:
This consortium is made of actors from the different area of Euregio which have complementary competencies in textile, informatics and electronics. It also integrates the final users of the devices, the hospitals of the 3 countries of the Euregio Meuse Rhine. This will allow meeting the expectations of the care teams of several regions, collecting and analysing a larger amount of data and strengthening the validation of the prototypes. This document details a complete partner role description and the interactions between all of them, an involvement of a Strategic Committee (tech transfer experts, external experts e.g. WeLL, CareVille Limburg, Maastricht Health Campus, ID Campus, Innovatech, Cide Socran...) and an Advisory Board composed of more than 20 Flemish and Dutch companies. There is a balanced distribution of work package leadership (e.g. MUMC+ Hospital - specification (WP3) versus CHU Liège - testing (WP7)) that clearly expresses the cross-border cooperation. Also the interactions between partners in WP4, WP5 and WP6 are clearly cross-border oriented.

Expected Results (EN): RI1 Percentage SMEs that introduces product or process innovations.
Expected Outputs (EN): This project respond to objective n°1 of the Interreg Programme to increase innovation in SMEs by developing a new product of medical monitoring from elements already developed inside research centers. Consequently it enables the transfer of a product and a technology package to a group of companies to push up the emerging but extremely promising sector of connected objects and clothes.
This project respond also to the objective n°2 of the Interreg Programme because of its synergy within the Euregio of competences, know-how, infrastructures, for the creation of a product increasing the quality of the hospital service.
A deep co-creation, involving cross-boarder hospitals and research centers as well as additional external experts on usage (eHealth experts) and market introduction (SMEs), will be based on a mutual exchange of experience and knowledge to obtain an innovative product perfectly responding to the Euregional need. This will thoroughly ease the introduction on the market of the final product by a euregional company.
This last point is very important as the sector of interconnected objects and clothes is a booming sector which promises huge economical benefits. However, one of the issues of this sector is the difficulty for SMEs to integrate software, hardware and textile as well. This project is then suitable to fill this gap and give opportunity to SMEs to grow in this market.
