Description (FR): Il existe de la part des industriels une forte demande pour le développement d’outils spécifiques (capteurs adaptés) pouvant être intégrés au béton dès sa mise en œuvre. Dans le cas des bétons réfractaires, l’optimisation des temps de séchage a en effet un impact économique important (réduction du temps d’arrêt des lignes de fabrication, coût énergétique…) tout en les rendant plus performants et en limitant les risques d’endommagement des structures. Cependant, leur mise en œuvre requiert la disponibilité en temps réel de certaines données physiques via des capteurs spécifiques intégrés dans le béton. Or, les capteurs existant sur le marché sont trop restrictifs sur les conditions d’utilisation (gamme de températures, pression, environnement) et ne correspondent donc pas aux besoins des industriels du secteur des bétons réfractaires. De ce fait, l’objectif du projet CUBISM est de combler ces lacunes en proposant des capteurs d’humidité et de pression fonctionnant à des températures bien plus élevées, dans des plages de mesure plus larges et dans un environnement compatible avec celui des bétons réfractaires. Le projet s’inscrit alors dans une démarche d’amélioration de la compétitivité des entreprises actives dans les domaines des bétons réfractaires et du génie civil, deux secteurs d’activité très développés de part et d’autre de la zone transfrontalière.
Read more Description (EN): There is a strong demand from the industry for the development of specific tools (adapted sensors) that can be embedded in concrete as soon as it is applied. In the case of refractory concretes, the optimisation of drying time has a significant economic impact (reduction in downtime of manufacturing lines, energy cost, etc.) while rendering them more efficient and limiting the risk of damage to the structures. However, their implementation requires real-time availability of certain physical data via specific sensors embedded in the concrete. Meanwhile, the existing sensors on the market are too restrictive regarding the conditions of use (temperature ranges, pressure, environment, etc.) and therefore do not correspond to the industrial needs of the refractory concrete sector. Consequently, the CUBISM project aims to fill these gaps by offering humidity and pressure sensors that work at much higher temperatures, in greater measurement ranges and in an environment compatible with that of refractory concretes. The project is part of a campaign to boost the competitiveness of companies active in the fields of refractory concretes and civil engineering, two highly developed sectors of activity on both sides of the cross-border region.

In het geval van vuurvast beton heeft de optimalisatie van de droogtijd een belangrijke economische impact (vermindering van de stoptijd van fabricagelijnen, energiekosten enz.), maakt ze het beton performanter en vermindert ze het risico op beschadiging van de structuren. De implementatie vereist echter de beschikbaarheid in reële tijd van bepaalde fysische gegevens via specifieke sensoren die in het beton zijn geïntegreerd. De sensoren die vandaag op de markt beschikbaar zijn, hebben te beperkte gebruiksvoorwaarden (temperatuur, druk, omgeving enz.) en beantwoorden daarom niet aan de industriële behoeften van de sector van het vuurvaste beton. Het project CUBISM wil deze leemten vullen door vocht- en druksensoren aan te bieden die op veel hogere temperaturen werken, binnen een ruimer meetbereik en in een omgeving die compatibel is met die van vuurvast beton. Het project past in een campagne om het concurrentievermogen te versterken van ondernemingen die actief zijn in het domein van het vuurvaste beton en de burgerlijke bouwkunde, twee sterk ontwikkelde activiteitensectoren aan beide zijden van de grens.
Read more Achievements (FR): Le 28 septembre 2017, l'évènement de lancement de Cubism a eu lieu à l'UPHF. Le concept de fonctionnement des capteurs - de type SAW - a été défini au tout début du projet. Les premiers résultats obtenus avec les capteurs mis en œuvre par le partenariat ont alors permis de valider le principe de fonctionnement par un choix judicieux des matériaux constituant le capteur. Ensuite, l'étude de couches sensibles à l'humidité a commencée. Les premiers prototypes de capteurs à ondes de surface, avec le niobate de lithium comme substrat, ont été élaborés. Un travail de veille scientifique et technologique visant à identifier les matériaux disponibles ou en développement pouvant potentiellement répondre aux contraintes spécifiques de capteurs devant pouvoir fonctionner à des températures pouvant atteindre 500 à 600 °C a débuté. Ces travaux ont été poursuivis et une attention particulière à été consacrée au développement de capteurs vitrocéramiques. Parallèlement, les travaux de modélisation pour l'application visant à déterminer la pression ont été menés. L'objectif final étant de valider le concept du capteur de pression, dont le principe est basé sur la modification du parcours de propagation d'ondes de surface (SAW) sur une lame déformée mécaniquement sous l'action de la pression. L'adhésion des électrodes sur des substrats "haute température" sélectionnées a été améliorée afin de mieux résister à des cycles de séchage à haute température. Un premier design de capteur de pression a été réalisé en vitrocéramique. Au stade actuel, le consortium a validé un premier prototype labo permettant de suivre l'humidité jusqu'à très haute température (600 °C et plus). Le design et la connectique sont optimalisés de façon interactive par modélisation, mise en œuvre des nouveaux designs et vérification/modélisation de la performance. Dès à présent les résultats sont très encourageants. Le concept de l'encapsulation a été défini et les essais de réalisation de l'encapsulation ont été réalisés. La mise en œuvre est en voie d'optimalisation. Des tests en autoclave des capteurs encapsulés ont été réalisés validant le capteur de pression. Des voies de communication ont été créés afin de divulguer les informations et le progrès du projet Cubism. A cet effet, un site web a été créé : http://www.cubism-interreg.eu/ . Un accès au site intranet, donnant accès à la documentation leur réservée, a été donné aux parrains du projet. Dans le cadre de l'événement annuel 2019 du programme Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen (mardi 19 novembre 2019 à Courtrai) portant sur la digitalisation des projets, le projet CUBISM a été mis à l'honneur au travers d 'une vidéo. Le 10 mars 2020, une session de formation organisée autour de différents ateliers, illustrant les activités et résultats du projet, a eu lieu au CRIBC dans l'après-midi. Le public cible (industriels, étudiants, enseignants en provenance des versants wallon et français) y était représenté. Une téléconférence de formation transfrontalière intitulé "Perspectives des méthodes additives pour la fabrication de composants céramiques et métalliques. Applications au projet CUBISM" a été organisée le 18 mars 2021. L'évènement de clôture a eu lieu le 21 septembre 2021 par webinar. A la suite de l’évènement de clôture, qui a eu lieu le 21 septembre 2021, nous avons notablement eu deux retours des industriels présents. En premier, le Dr. Mathieu DOMBROWSKI (Superviseur produit fonderie haut fourneau chez CALDERYS), qui a tenu à nous féliciter pour les résultats atteints avec les essais pilotes en laboratoire (mesures d’humidité et de pression) et a réitéré son soutien concernant la possibilité d’effectuer des essais in situ chez eux. Il a aussi émis des interrogations concernant la suite du projet. Pour le deuxième retour, le chef de projet de chez TRB, Antoine BALLY a exprimé son contentement à la vue des possibilités de mesures à haute températures au sein du béton réfractaire, par les dernières versions du capteur développé en laboratoire. Il a aussi réaffirmé qu’ils étaient très intéressés pour tester ces capteurs en conditions réelles. Le projet CUBISM est né d’une demande industrielle relative au manque d’outils de mesure nécessaire à l’optimisation des bétons et leurs séchages. Les résultats du projet ont permis d’accomplir des POC - preuve de concept – portant sur la réalisation de capteurs innovants employant la sensibilité des ondes de surface au travers de nouveaux matériaux piézoélectriques. Les capteurs développés durant le projet supportent l'environnement difficile des bétons et sont capables d’effectuer des mesures physiques locales, quantitatives et non triviales, comme l’humidité ou la pression. Deux types de capteurs ont été développés, leurs différences sont liées à la température de fonctionnement. Les premiers, adaptés aux hautes températures (>500°C) concernent les bétons réfractaires. Les seconds, pour les températures ambiantes, sont dédiés au génie civil. Ils ont montré qu’ils étaient aux minimums capables des mêmes mesures du taux d’humidité que les capteurs existants dans le commerce. Or, ces derniers, en présence d’humidité extrême, deviennent inopérants du fait de l’apparition d’une hystérésis fatale au capteur. Cet écueil n’apparaît pas lors des premiers essais effectués en laboratoire avec les capteurs SAW de CUBISM. La validation à l’échelle pilote de ce résultat n’a pu être menée complètement à son terme du fait d’un problème lié au dimensionnement des échantillons malgré les prédictions de la simulation. Un redimensionnement de ces derniers est envisagé afin de s’assurer d’atteindre une humidité extrême en son sein. Ce deuxième essai n’a pas pu être effectué dans le temps imparti au projet du fait de la pandémie lié à la Covid19. En effet, la fermeture des frontières ainsi que la distanciation sociale nous a fait perdre près d’un an d’essais nécessitant la mutualisation des équipements. Il est prévu de mener cet essai manquant à la suite du projet. Concernant la mesure d’humidité à très hautes températures, utiles au séchage des bétons réfractaires, les essais pilote dans un bloc de béton, avec les capteurs SAW protégés par des encapsulations, ont montré de très bons résultats cohérents avec la théorie. D’autres essais pilotes sont prévus afin de valider et de calibrer l’utilisation de la vitrocéramique en tant que support piézoélectrique ainsi que la couche sensible à l’humidité. Concernant la mesure de haute pression gazeuse au sein d’un béton réfractaire, un capteur SAW à base de vitrocéramique a été développé et finalisé pour permettre les premiers essais. Ces derniers ont montré qu’il était possible de mesurer la pression de manière quantitative jusqu’à la valeur de 50 bars. Là aussi d’autres essais supplémentaires prévus n’ont pu être menés dans le temps imparti au projet du fait de la Covid19. Ces essais complémentaires seront effectués après la fin du projet. L’ensemble de ces résultats n’a pu être atteint que grâce à la mutualisation des compétences et des équipements des différents partenaires (BE et FR) mais aussi grâce au maintien d’une démarche collaborative fortement orientée vers l'applicatif en associant dès le départ les partenaires industriels demandeurs.
Read more Achievements (EN): On September 28, 2017, the Cubism launch event took place at the UPHF. The concept of the operation of the sensors — SAW type — was defined at the very beginning of the project. The first results obtained with the sensors implemented by the partnership allowed to validate the principle of operation by a wise choice of the materials constituting the sensor. Then, the study of moisture sensitive layers began. The first prototypes of surface wave sensors, with lithium niobate as substrate, were developed. Scientific and technological monitoring to identify materials available or in development that could potentially meet the specific constraints of sensors that must be able to operate at temperatures of up to 500 to 600 °C has begun. This work has been continued and special attention has been devoted to the development of vitroceramic sensors. At the same time, modelling work for the application to determine pressure was carried out. The final objective is to validate the concept of the pressure sensor, the principle of which is based on the modification of the surface wave propagation path (SAW) on a mechanically deformed blade under the action of pressure. The adhesion of electrodes to selected “high temperature” substrates has been improved to better withstand high temperature drying cycles. A first pressure sensor design was made in vitroceramics. At this stage, the consortium has validated a first prototype lab to monitor humidity up to very high temperature (600 °C and above). Design and connectivity are interactively optimised through modeling, implementation of new designs and verification/modelling of performance. From now on, the results are very encouraging. The concept of encapsulation has been defined and encapsulation tests have been carried out. Implementation is in the process of optimising. Autoclave tests of encapsulated sensors were performed validating the pressure sensor. Communication channels have been created to disclose the information and progress of the Cubism project. For this purpose, a website has been created: http://www.cubism-interreg.eu/ . Access to the intranet site, giving access to the documentation reserved for them, was given to the project sponsors. As part of the 2019 annual event of the Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen programme (Tuesday 19 November 2019 in Kortrijk) on the digitalisation of projects, the CUBISM project was highlighted through a video. On 10 March 2020, a training session organised around different workshops, illustrating the activities and results of the project, took place at CRIBC in the afternoon. The target audience (industrial, students, teachers from Walloon and French sides) was represented. A cross-border training teleconference entitled "Perspectives of additive methods for the manufacture of ceramic and metal components. Applications to the CUBISM project" was organised on 18 March 2021. The closing event took place on September 21, 2021 by webinar. Following the closing event, which took place on September 21, 2021, we had noticeably two returns from the industrialists present. First, Dr. Mathieu DOMBROWSKI (Supervisor product blast furnace foundry at CALDERYS), who congratulated us on the results achieved with the pilot tests in the laboratory (humidity and pressure measurements) and reiterated his support for the possibility of conducting in situ tests at home. He also raised questions about the future of the project. For the second return, the project manager of TRB, Antoine BALLY expressed his satisfaction at the possibility of measuring at high temperatures within the refractory concrete, through the latest versions of the sensor developed in the laboratory. He also reiterated that they were very interested in testing these sensors in real conditions. The CUBISM project was born out of an industrial demand relating to the lack of measurement tools necessary for the optimisation of concretes and their drying. The results of the project made it possible to achieve POCs — proof of concept — for the realisation of innovative sensors employing the sensitivity of surface waves through new piezoelectric materials. The sensors developed during the project support the harsh environment of concretes and are able to perform local, quantitative and non-trivial physical measurements such as humidity or pressure. Two types of sensors have been developed, their differences are related to the operating temperature. The first, adapted to high temperatures (> 500 °C) concern refractory concretes. The latter, for ambient temperatures, are dedicated to civil engineering. They showed that they were at least capable of the same humidity measurements as existing sensors in trade. However, the latter, in the presence of extreme humidity, become inoperative due to the appearance of fatal hysteresis to the sensor. This pitfall does not appear during the first tests carried out in the laboratory with the SAW sensors of CUBISM. Pilot-scale validation of this result could not be completed completely due to a problem with sample sizing despite the simulation’s predictions. A resising of the latter is envisaged in order to ensure that it reaches extreme humidity within it. This second trial could not be carried out within the time allotted to the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the closure of borders as well as social distancing has caused us to lose almost a year of tests requiring the pooling of equipment. It is planned to conduct this missing test as a result of the project. Regarding the measurement of humidity at very high temperatures, useful for drying refractory concretes, pilot tests in a concrete block, with SAW sensors protected by encapsulations, showed very good results consistent with the theory. Further pilot tests are planned to validate and calibrate the use of vitroceramic as a piezoelectric medium as well as the moisture sensitive layer. Regarding the measurement of high gas pressure in refractory concrete, a vitroceramic-based SAW sensor has been developed and finalised to allow for the first tests. The latter showed that it was possible to measure the pressure quantitatively up to the value of 50 bar. There, too, additional planned trials could not be carried out within the time allocated to the project as a result of Covid19. These additional tests will be carried out after the completion of the project. All these results could only be achieved by pooling the skills and equipment of the various partners (BE and FR) but also by maintaining a collaborative approach strongly oriented towards the application by involving the requesting industrial partners from the outset.
