Description (FR): Les composites polymère-bois et polymère-fibres naturelles occupent une place de plus en plus importante dans différents secteurs porteurs de la zone transfrontalière, à savoir les transports, et particulièrement l’automobile, la construction, le sport ou encore le mobilier et les biens de consommation.
Dans ce contexte, le projet COMPOSENS a pour objectif le développement de matériaux composites polymère-bois ou fibres végétales performants à faible impact environnemental. Le projet vise l’utilisation de ressources renouvelables de la région franco-belge : bois et fibres naturelles, telles que le chanvre et le lin. Les fibres étudiées seront des fibres courtes ainsi que des fibres continues (rovings, mats, tissés, co mêlés). Ces fibres végétales permettent de produire des biocomposites plus légers que les matériaux composites intégrant des fibres de verre.
Le projet COMPOSENS propose une approche originale qui combine un traitement des fibres végétales par des procédés propres et une remédiation sensorielle pour le développement de nouveaux matériaux composites polymère-fibres naturelles répondant au cahier des charges des industriels de la zone transfrontalière. Des voies innovantes sont envisagées : imprégnation des fibres par des thermoplastiques, compound polymère-fibres naturelles destiné à la fabrication additive (impression 3D).

In this context the COMPOSENS project’s mission is to develop polymer composite materials with low environmental impact. These composites will incorporate renewable resources from the Franco-Belgian border region, meaning hemp and flax fibres as well as wood flour and sawdust. In addition to being renewable, these materials are also lighter than their non-renewable equialents like glass fiber.
An innovative way of fibers impregnation with thermoplastics is envisaged. The COMPOSENS project seeks to develop new applications for biocomposites. It will address the demands of industries in the Franco-Belgian border region (specifically SME).

In die context wil het COMPOSENS-project composietmaterialen ontwikkelen die bestaan uit polymeer-hout of sterke plantaardige vezels met een geringe impact op het milieu. Het project zet in op het gebruik van hernieuwbare bronnen in de Belgisch-Franse regio: hout en natuurlijke vezels zoals hennep en vlas. De onderzochte vezels zijn korte en continue vezels (rovings, matten, geweven en gemengd). Met deze plantaardige vezels kunnen lichtere biocomposieten geproduceerd worden dan de composietmaterialen die glasvezels bevatten.
Het COMPOSENS-project staat voor een originele aanpak waarbij de verwerking van de plantaardige vezels via schone procedés gecombineerd wordt met een sensorische remediatie voor de ontwikkeling van nieuwe composietmaterialen uit polymeer-natuurlijke vezels die overeenstemmen met de bestekken van de industriële ondernemers uit de grensstreek. Er wordt gedacht aan vernieuwende methodes: impregnatie van de vezels met thermoplasten, samenstellingen van polymeren-natuurlijke vezels voor de productie van additieven (3D printing).

Le démarrage efficace du projet transfrontalier COMPOSENS s’est traduit par des actions de communication et de sensibilisation des entreprises dès le début du projet, en parallèle avec les activités de recherche. Des outils communs de communication ont été mis en place tels que poster, plaquette et présentation du projet. Le site internet dédicacé au projet www.composens.eu a été mis en ligne en mars 2017 avec une adresse email de contact info@composens.eu. Il a reçu au 30 septembre 2020 environ 3200 visites de 2837 visiteurs. L’équipe a organisé avec succès (60 participants) un évènement de lancement transfrontalier conjoint COMPOSENS - BIOCOMPAL, le 27 mars 2017 à Seneffe (Certech, versant wallon), autour du thème « Biocomposites – Performance, allègement et propriétés olfactives ». Le 13 septembre 2018, l’équipe COMPOSENS a organisé un atelier lors duquel plusieurs industriels franco-belges ont pu assister à la présentation des premiers résultats de recherche du projet. Après une visite de la plate-forme « Plasturgie & Composites » d’IMT Lille Douai, les partenaires ont distribué deux objets promotionnels (impression 3D) : un porte-crayons et un porte-cartes de visite. Malgré le caractère restreint de l’atelier, les participants ont souligné l’intérêt de cette formule de proximité, une occasion privilégiée d’échanger sur les avancées du projet. Enfin, l’événement de clôture, organisé le 17 septembre 2020 dans un format dématérialisé, a rassemblé près de 140 personnes provenant essentiellement de France et de Belgique. Ce webinar s’est articulé autour de la présentation des résultats de 2 projets transfrontaliers complémentaires dans le domaine des composites : COMPOSENS et RECY-COMPOSITE. Le programme complété par des interventions industrielles et une visite virtuelle de Certech a donné satisfaction à tous les participants. Une vidéo de fin de projet présentant les résultats de COMPOSENS a été réalisée pour cet événement de clôture et pour assurer la pérennité du projet. Cette vidéo est diffusée via le site internet www.composens.eu mais également via d’autres canaux (ex. Youtube, réseaux sociaux, etc.). Un dossier partagé, des réunions de travail et de nombreux échanges contribuent à la coopération transfrontalière entre les partenaires. La participation à des journées ou salons a permis de détailler le projet à différents industriels (environ 140 depuis le début du projet) et de suivre l’état de l’art dans le domaine des biocomposites. Enfin, les partenaires COMPOSENS ont finalisé leurs travaux transfrontaliers de recherche sur les composites polymères-fibres naturelles (chanvre et lin), et plus particulièrement sur les aspects de (pré)traitement et caractérisation des fibres, formulation, compoundage, évaluation des propriétés mécaniques, imprégnation en continu et remédiation odeurs/composés organiques volatils (COV). Ces travaux ont été complétés par une analyse du cycle de vie des biocomposites dans une application automobile. L’équipe COMPOSENS a également réalisé par fabrication additive d’un objet démonstrateur en polymère-cellulose à destination des industriels de la zone Interreg. Dès le début du projet, les partenaires ont sélectionné des échantillons de référence pour leurs travaux de recherche : fibres de lin papetier et de chanvre roui de 5 mm, rovings (bobines de fibres continues) en lin, farine de bois. Concernant la matrice thermoplastique, les partenaires ont retenu le polypropylène (PP), et le polybutylène succinate (PBS). Le (pré)traitement des fibres par voie enzymatique et chimique a été étudié. Un axe de travail s’est attaché au greffage enzymatique d’acide férulique et d’acide phénolique sur la cellulose. Les composites obtenus ont été évalués (caractérisation chimique et tests mécaniques). Le greffage enzymatique d’acide phénolique sur la cellulose a été mis en évidence par extractions et hydrolyse. Seule la surface de la fibre semble modifiée. Le traitement enzymatique a été optimisé pour augmenter le taux de greffage et diminuer le nombre de sous-produits. Un traitement plasma des fibres courtes a été testé afin d’améliorer les conditions de greffage. La veille technologique a ensuite mené à orienter le travail sur le traitement plasma et dépôt des fibres longues dans des composites à matrice thermoplastique. Un système a été adapté pour le traitement des fibres longues avec un procédé continu. L’étude de la purification de la cellulose des fibres de lin et de chanvre à l’aide de solvants verts a conduit à la mise en place d’une boîte à outils pour la sélection des fibres en fonction de leur colorimétrie, mouillabilité ou cristallinité. Des études statistiques ont permis de mettre en lumière les paramètres modifiés simultanément pour chaque traitement. La caractérisation chimique des fibres a été complétée avec une nouvelle méthode d’analyse biotechnologique de la surface des fibres. Des essais d’extrusion bivis de composites à 20% de fibres (lin, chanvre) ont été réalisés avec une matrice PP/PPgMA et une matrice PBS afin de quantifier l’influence de la vitesse de rotation et du débit matière sur les paramètres morphologiques des fibres. Un modèle de simulation de l’évolution des fibres en cours du procédé d’extrusion a été élaboré à l’aide du logiciel de simulation LUDOVIC©. En parallèle, des mesures de rhéologie et des observations en microscopie électronique à balayage ont été effectuées. Les facteurs de casse des fibres sont systématiquement plus importants dans le cas du PBS que dans le cas du PP/PPgMA. Il y a donc une interaction plus importante des fibres, quelle que soit leur origine botanique (lin ou chanvre), avec le PBS (matrice polaire) qu’avec le PP (matrice apolaire). Cette différence d’interaction n’a pas pu être mise en évidence par différents tests réalisés en spectrométrie infrarouge. En revanche, des essais réalisés par Microscopie à Force Atomique (AFM) à l’aide d’une pointe enrobée de nanocellulose sur des surfaces (matrices) PP et PBS ont permis de montrer une interaction de la cellulose plus importante avec la matrice PBS qu’avec la matrice PP/PPgMA et la matrice PP seule. L’influence de l’extrusion assistée eau sur les propriétés mécaniques a également été étudiée. Des essais d’enrobage de fibres par une matrice polymère avec une filière de gainage ont permis de mettre en évidence les points clés pour la mise au point d’un système d’imprégnation de fibres en continu. Etant donné la faible résistance à la traction des fibres naturelles, l’addition de plusieurs rovings de fibres s’est avérée nécessaire pour atteindre des résistances plus élevées dans la filière d’imprégnation. Cependant cette superposition rend l’imprégnation plus difficile (max 15% en poids d’imprégnation). Des essais d’imprégnation menés avec des fibres conventionnelles plus résistantes (fibres de carbone, de verre et de basalte) ont permis d’augmenter le taux d’imprégnation à 30% en poids. Enfin, des essais de remédiation odeurs/COV (composés organiques volatils) ont été réalisés avec différents additifs. L’odeur des composites a été étudiée quantitativement par olfactométrie à dilution dynamique selon la norme EN 13725 et par évaluation directe de l’intensité globale, et qualitativement selon la méthodologie du champ des odeurs®. Les résultats ont été comparés à ceux obtenus pour les échantillons produits par extrusion assistée eau. Les composites à base de PBS sont moins émissifs (moins de COV) ; l’odeur ressentie est toutefois du même ordre de grandeur qu’avec la matrice PP. Des analyses GC-MS-sniffing (chromatographie gazeuse-spectrométrie de masse-analyse olfactive) ont permis d’identifier les composés odorants. Enfin, les fondements de l’analyse de cycle de vie ont été appliqués afin de déterminer de la manière la plus représentative possible l’impact environnemental des biocomposites en fibres naturelles dans l’application automobile.

The project aims at the use of renewable resources in the Franco-Belgian region: natural wood and fibers, such as hemp and flax. The COMPOSENS project proposed an original approach that combines the treatment of plant fibres by own processes and sensory remediation for the development of new polymer-natural fibre composite materials that meet the specifications of manufacturers in the cross-border area. Innovative pathways have been studied: impregnation of fibers with thermoplastics, production of natural polymer-fiber compounds for additive manufacturing (3D printing). The COMPOSENS partners, located in the Interreg area on each side of the border, have complementary skills adapted to their respective industrial fabric. The COMPOSENS team relies on the complementarity, motivation and effectiveness of cross-border cooperation of 7 partners: Certech, ULiège-GxABT and ValBiom on the Walloon side, INRA UMR FARE, CRITT MDTS, IMT Lille Douai and Armines on the French side. The effective start of the COMPOSENS cross-border project has resulted in communication and awareness-raising actions among companies from the beginning of the project, in parallel with research activities. Common communication tools have been put in place such as poster, brochure and presentation of the project. The website dedicated to the project www.composens.eu was put online in March 2017 with a contact email address info@composens.eu. As of September 30, 2020, it received approximately 3200 visits from 2837 visitors. The team successfully organised (60 participants) a joint cross-border launch event COMPOSENS — BIOCOMPAL, March 27, 2017 in Seneffe (Certech, Walloon slope), around the theme “Biocomposites — Performance, lightening and olfactory properties”. On 13 September 2018, the COMPOSENS team organised a workshop during which several French-Belgian industrialists were able to attend the presentation of the first research results of the project. After a visit to IMT Lille Douai’s “Plasturgy & Composites” platform, the partners distributed two promotional items (3D printing): a penetrator and a visiting card holder. Despite the limited nature of the workshop, participants stressed the value of this proximity formula, a privileged opportunity to discuss the progress of the project. Finally, the closing event, organised on 17 September 2020 in a dematerialised format, brought together nearly 140 people mainly from France and Belgium. This webinar was organised around the presentation of the results of 2 complementary cross-border projects in the field of composites: COMPOSENS and RECY-COMPOSITE. The program complemented by industrial interventions and a virtual tour of Certech gave satisfaction to all participants. A video of the end of the project presenting the results of COMPOSENS was made for this closing event and to ensure the sustainability of the project. This video is broadcast via the website www.composens.eu but also via other channels (e.g. Youtube, social networks, etc.). A shared dossier, working meetings and numerous exchanges contribute to cross-border cooperation between the partners. Participation in days or fairs allowed to detail the project to different industrialists (about 140 since the beginning of the project) and to monitor the state of the art in the field of biocomposites. Finally, COMPOSENS partners finalised their cross-border research work on natural polymer-fibre composites (hemp and linen), and in particular on the aspects of (pre)treatment and characterisation of fibers, formulation, compounding, evaluation of mechanical properties, continuous impregnation and remediation of odours/volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This work was complemented by an analysis of the life cycle of biocomposites in an automotive application. The COMPOSENS team also carried out additive manufacturing of a polymer-cellulose demonstrator object for industrialists in the Interreg zone. From the beginning of the project, the partners selected reference samples for their research: 5 mm paper linen and rolled hemp fibres, rovings (continuous fibre coils) in flax, wood flour. For the thermoplastic matrix, the partners retained polypropylene (PP), and polybutylene succinate (PBS). The (pre)treatment of fibers by enzymatic and chemical route has been studied. An axis of work was attached to the enzymatic grafting of ferullic acid and phenolic acid into cellulose. The composites obtained were evaluated (chemical characterisation and mechanical testing). Enzymatic grafting of phenolic acid into cellulose was demonstrated by extractions and hydrolysis. Only the surface of the fiber appears to be altered. Enzyme treatment has been optimised to increase grafting rate and decrease the number of by-products. Plasma treatment of short fibers has been tested to improve grafting conditions. The technological watch then led to the orientation of the work on plasma treatment and deposition of long fibers in thermoplastic matrix composites. A system has been adapted for the treatment of long fibers with a continuous process. The study of cellulose purification of flax and hemp fibres using green solvents led to the establishment of a toolbox for the selection of fibers according to their colorimetry, wetability or crystallinity. Statistical studies have made it possible to highlight the parameters modified simultaneously for each treatment. The chemical characterisation of fibers has been completed with a new method of biotechnological analysis of the fiber surface. Bivis extrusion tests of 20 % fibre composites (linen, hemp) were performed with a PP/PPgMA matrix and a PBS matrix to quantify the influence of rotation velocity and material flow on fiber morphological parameters. A simulation model of the evolution of the current fibers of the extrusion process was developed using the LUDOVIC© simulation software. In parallel, rheology measurements and observations in scanning electron microscopy were performed. Fiber breakage factors are consistently more important in the case of PBS than in the case of PP/PPgMA. There is therefore a greater interaction of fibers, regardless of their botanical origin (linen or hemp), with PBS (polar matrix) than with PP (apolar matrix). This difference in interaction could not be demonstrated by different tests carried out in infrared spectrometry. In contrast, tests carried out by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) using a nanocellulose-coated tip on PP and PBS surfaces (matrix) showed greater cellulose interaction with the PBS matrix than with the PP/PPgMA matrix and the PP matrix alone. The influence of water-assisted extrusion on mechanical properties has also been studied. Tests of fibre coating by a polymer matrix with a sheathing channel highlighted the key points for the development of a continuous fiber impregnation system. Due to the low tensile strength of natural fibers, the addition of several fiber rovings was necessary to achieve higher strengths in the impregnation chain. However, this superposition makes impregnation more difficult (max 15 % by weight of impregnation). Impregnation tests conducted with more resistant conventional fibers (carbon, glass and basalt fibres) increased the impregnation rate to 30 % by weight. Finally, odours/VOC remediation tests (volatile organic compounds) have been carried out with different additives. The odour of composites has been studied quantitatively by dynamic dilution olfactometry according to EN 13725 and by direct assessment of overall intensity, and qualitatively according to the odours field methodology®. The results were compared with those obtained for samples produced by water-assisted extrusion. PBS-based composites are less emitting (less VOCs); the smell felt, however, is of the same order of magnitude as with the PP matrix. GC-MS-sniffing analyses (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactory analysis) made it possible to identify the odorous compounds. Finally, the basis for life cycle analysis was applied to determine in the most representative way possible the environmental impact of natural fibre biocomposites in the automotive application.

Les partenaires poursuivront leur collaboration au-delà du programme Interreg V pour pérenniser le réseau transfrontalier COMPOSENS. Ils ont déjà développé des collaborations transfrontalières en dehors du programme suite à leur coopération dans le contexte de projets Interreg IV. La fusion de deux équipes transfrontalières complémentaires devrait permettre la mise en place de nouvelles collaborations transfrontalières encore effectives après la fin du projet, sous forme de thèse de doctorat transfrontalière par exemple ou de projets de recherche impliquant au moins un partenaire de chaque côté de la frontière. Des entreprises de la zone pourraient également être associées à ces projets.

The partners will continue their collaboration beyond the Interreg V programme to sustain the COMPOSENS cross-border network. They have already developed cross-border collaborations outside of the programme following their cooperation in the context of the Interreg IV projects. The merger of two complementary cross-border teams should allow the implementation of new cross-border collaborations that remain in effect after the end of the project, in the form of a cross-border doctoral thesis, for example, or research projects involving at least one partner on each side of the border. Companies in the region could also be associated with these projects.

De versmelting van twee aanvullende grensoverschrijdende teams zou moeten zorgen voor de opzet van nieuwe grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingen die nog actief zijn na afloop van het project, bijvoorbeeld onder de vorm van een grensoverschrijdend proefschrift of onderzoeksprojecten waarbij minstens één partner langs weerszijden van de grens betrokken is. De bedrijven in de regio zouden ook betrokken kunnen worden bij deze projecten.
