The interest of selective deconstruction compared to demolition is already well established and initiatives have been launched and are carried on in Europe. However, this approach is not enough put into practice, especially due to a lack of information from stakeholders (industrial players, authorities and municipalities, etc.) on existing techniques and legislation, with disparities depending on the countries or regions. VALDEM takes over these initiatives to apply the concept of on-site treatment to a cross-border territory, in support of companies in well-identified sectors (C&D companies, Waste sorting plant, manufacturers of ready-to-use concrete. or prefabricated concrete, and public an road works companies) VALDEM project will make it possible to valorise several mineral streams resulting from C&DW Management activities, which are valued at best as mixed aggregates presenting sometimes problems of quality.

Les déchets de construction et de démolition représentent une masse considérable (1,09 tonnes/an/habitant en Europe en 2011) dont une part importante n’est pas valorisée. Le manque de valorisation de ces matériaux naît de l’hétérogénéité du flux des déchets qui empêche un recyclage efficace et économiquement rentable. L’objectif du projet VALDEM est de mettre en place une unité mobile de traitement des déchets capable de séparer, sur chantier, les différentes fractions utiles. L’outil développé sera accessible aux industriels français, wallons et flamands. Le projet permettra également de produire des flux homogènes de matériaux qui pourront intégrer des nouvelles applications, et dont la validité aura été vérifiée tant des points de vue scientifiques et techniques, qu’environnementaux, sociaux et économiques au travers d’une analyse du cycle de vie. Dans une zone géographique où la densité de population, les types de bâtis similaires et où le tissu économique présente des industriels démolisseurs et valorisateurs de chaque côté de la frontière, la rationalisation du traitement de ces déchets de démolition passe par une logique d’économie circulaire adaptée au territoire pour développer des procédés de traitement rentables.

Bouw- en sloopafval vertegenwoordigt een aanzienlijke massa (1,09 ton per jaar per inwoner in Europa in 2011), waarvan een aanzienlijk deel niet wordt teruggewonnen. Het gebrek aan terugwinning van deze materialen is te wijten aan de heterogene aard van de afvalstroom, die een efficiënte en kosteneffectieve recycling verhindert. Het VALDEM-project heeft tot doel een mobiele afvalverwerkingsinstallatie op te zetten die de verschillende nuttige fracties ter plaatse kan scheiden. Het ontwikkelde instrument zal toegankelijk zijn voor Franse, Waalse en Vlaamse fabrikanten. Het project zal ook homogene materiaalstromen produceren die nieuwe toepassingen kunnen integreren en waarvan de validiteit zowel vanuit wetenschappelijk als technisch, milieu-, sociaal en economisch oogpunt is geverifieerd door middel van een levenscyclusanalyse. In een geografisch gebied waar de bevolkingsdichtheid, soortgelijke soorten gebouwen en het economische weefsel aan weerszijden van de grens sloop- en recyclage-industrieën omvatten, vereist de rationalisering van de behandeling van dit sloopafval een aan het grondgebied aangepaste circulaire economische benadering om rendabele verwerkingsprocessen te ontwikkelen.

Achievements (EN):

Since the beginning of the project, the CTP has been monitoring the scientific, technical, administrative and financial tasks of the VALDEM project on a daily basis in accordance with the rules of the Interreg FWVL programme in close collaboration with all the partners. In terms of communication, each partner participated in events and congresses in the field of materials (RF2B, SLD4, Progress of recycling in the built environment, Nomad, Materials 2018, Seramco, Sustainable Materials,...), the environment (Pollutec 2018), the circular economy (Team2) or the VCA (SAM Congress, avnir). These events are an opportunity to present the project’s achievements to the industrial actors involved in the project (demolishment and re-use sector). In addition, the Valdem website (www.valdem-interreg.eu) is regularly updated in French, English and Dutch. At the level of research activities, the CTP studied two methods of separation of mixed aggregates brick/concrete resulting from demolition: water jig and selective grinding. The quality of the separation, assessed on the basis of standards NF EN 933-11 (classification of constituents) and NF EN 1097-6 (volume mass and water absorption of aggregates), shows a good efficiency of the water jig unlike selective grinding. The water jig recovers a more concentrated fraction of concrete and natural stone (less than 10 % bricks). The potential for valorisation of these fractions in new concrete formulations is currently being studied. In addition, the CTP is in contact with IPSIIS, which produces incombustible insulating foams from mineral powders according to a protocol it has patented. IPSIIS has successfully carried out preliminary tests using crushed bricks. Given the low recovery of mixed recycled bricks and concrete, and in particular the fraction of less than 4 mm, the CTP asked IPSIIS to assess the compatibility of a mixed powder consisting of bricks and concrete with its non-combustible insulating foam manufacturing process. The foams obtained from mixed brick/concrete are very friable and have defects. Their density is between 340 and 400 kg/m³. Indeed, there seems to be a reaction between the powder and one of the adjuvants of the standard IPSIIS formulation. In order to consider the manufacture of mineral foams from these materials, it would therefore be necessary to adapt the formulation. As part of the project, three theses, carried out in cotutelle ULiège-GeMMe and IMT Lille-Douai, were supported. The CTP contributed to the preparation of materials, concrete and bricks, for the partners (crushing operations, grinding, sieving). The thesis of Mr. BOUARROUDJ was supported on 19 November 2019 in Douai. It concerns the valorisation of recycled concrete sands (dimensions less than 4 mm) in mortar formulations. The cool and hardened behaviors of mortars made from recycled sand and natural model sand are compared. A recovery track for particles of less than 125 µm is also studied: the purpose is to use the powder from crushing recycled concrete aggregates as a mineral addition. C. COLMAN defended his thesis on 7 December 2020 by videoconference. It investigated the risk of plaster residues in aggregates and recycled sands. It highlights the fact that the current 0.2 % limit for sulphate content (EN 206 standard) seems too strict and hinders the recovery of recycled sands in durable and resistant concrete. A sulphate content of up to 0.3 % may be acceptable. A. Grellier defended his thesis by videoconference on 14 December 2020. She worked on the valorisation of brick fines in Portland compound cements and alkali-activated materials. The valuation in cement is conclusive with substitution rates up to 20 %. For alkali-activated materials, she demonstrated that brick fines (granulometry D50 = 20 µm) can be an equivalent precursor to Haut-Fourneau slag and achieve mechanical performance that remains high up to 50 % substitution. As regards the technical and environmental validation of materials resulting from the recycling of demolition waste, INISMA is exploring possibilities for the recovery of mixed bricks/concrete in bricks and geotechnics. The substitution, in the composition of bricks, of part of the clay fraction by recycled 0/2 mm crushed to less than 100 µm gives good results in mechanical and aesthetic terms. In geotechnics, the criteria for use can be reached but these performance degrades very quickly as soon as we deviate slightly from the optimal water content. The addition of inorganic binders reduces this sensitivity to water. The valorisation of these mixed materials in Reexcavable Self-compacting Materials (MAR) is also studied. INISMA is working on 2 formulations that need to be optimised (mastery of rheology through the addition of adjuvants). Following a bibliographical study, two grout spreading tests were selected and should make it possible to object to the flowability of the mixtures. Sprawling measures are effective in assessing the flowability of mixtures and their possibility of self-compacting. For its part, Neo-Eco has developed an environmental monitoring tool. The facility, operational since November 2017, makes it possible to carry out leaching tests of products from specific formulations containing waste, and to compare experimental boards based on recycled materials with control materials. With this tool, Neo-Eco conducted a study to verify the environmental safety of waste-based formulations from construction. Three formulations, made by IMT Lille Douai, were tested: — a reference formulation consisting of cement, limestone filler, sand and water; — a formulation in which the limestone filler is entirely substituted by finely ground brick; — a formulation in which the filler and the sand are substituted respectively by fines of bricks and fine eartheners. Neo-Eco has also carried out validation tests of industrial equipment on deconstruction sites (percussion crusher, sieve, air separator, flotation machine, etc.); and participated in the recovery of waste from deconstruction at the Leroy Merlin site in Douai. As part of the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) activity, ULiege-PEPs and CD2E carried out a bibliographical study on the recovery of recycled waste, PEFs (Performance Environmental Footprint), Impact Assessment Methods and Models,... In addition, ULiège-PEPs carried out two ACV studies: the first, motivated by the positive results obtained by INISMA, concerns the partial substitution of clay by finely ground mixed recycled in the manufacture of bricks; the second concerns the recycling of aggregates and fine fractions from the demolition site of the Leroy Merlin store in Douai. Part of the 4-20 mm fraction from this site was used in the concrete of the slab of the new Tourcoing store. The fine fraction (0-4 mm) was recycled as “Wasterial” slabs by EtNISI. Finally, a legislative watch on the three sides (French, Walloon and Flemish) is carried out by the CTP. In particular, it is powered by contacts with CCW-VCB, Tracimat (traceability system set up in Flanders on 24/08/2018) and FFB/SEDDRe.

Depuis le début du projet, le CTP assure le suivi au quotidien des tâches scientifique, technique, administrative et financière du projet VALDEM dans le respect des règles du programme Interreg FWVL en étroite collaboration avec l'ensemble des partenaires. En termes de communication, chaque partenaire a participé à des manifestations et congrès dans le domaine des matériaux (RF2B, SLD4, Progress of recycling in the built environment, Nomad, Matériaux 2018, Seramco, Sustainable Materials, ...), de l'environnement (Pollutec 2018), de l'économie circulaire (Team2) ou de l'ACV (Congrès SAM, avnir). Ces évènements sont l'occasion de présenter les réalisations du projet aux acteurs industriels concernés par le projet (secteur de la démolition et du réemploi). Par ailleurs, le site internet Valdem (www.valdem-interreg.eu) est régulièrement mis à jour en français, anglais et néerlandais. Au niveau des activités de recherche, le CTP a étudié deux méthodes de séparation de granulats mixtes briques/béton issus de la démolition : le jig à eau et le broyage sélectif. La qualité de la séparation, évaluée sur base des normes NF EN 933-11 (classification des constituants) et NF EN 1097-6 (masse volumique et absorption d'eau des granulats), démontre une bonne efficacité du jig à eau contrairement au broyage sélectif. Le jig à eau permet de récupérer une fraction plus concentrée en béton et pierre naturelle (moins de 10% de briques). Le potentiel de valorisation de ces fractions dans de nouvelles formulations de béton est actuellement étudié. Par ailleurs, le CTP est en contact avec la société IPSIIS, qui réalise des mousses isolantes incombustibles à partir de poudres minérales selon un protocole qu'elle a breveté. IPSIIS a réalisé avec succès des essais préliminaires à partir de briques broyées. Etant donné le peu de valorisation du recyclé mixte de briques et de béton, et tout particulièrement de la fraction inférieure à 4 mm, le CTP a demandé à la société IPSIIS d’évaluer la compatibilité d’une poudre mixte constituée de briques et de béton avec son procédé de fabrication de mousses isolantes incombustibles. Les mousses obtenues au départ de mixte brique/béton sont très friables et présentent des défauts. Leur masse volumique est comprise entre 340 et 400 kg/m 3. Il semble en effet qu’il y ait une réaction entre la poudre et un des adjuvants de la formulation standard d’IPSIIS. Pour envisager la fabrication de mousses minérales à partir de ces matières, il serait donc nécessaire d’adapter la formulation. Dans le cadre du projet, trois thèses, réalisées en cotutelle ULiège-GeMMe et IMT Lille-Douai, ont été soutenues. Le CTP a contribué à la préparation de matériaux, béton et briques, pour les partenaires (opérations de concassage, broyage, tamisage). La thèse de Mr. BOUARROUDJ a été soutenue le 19 novembre 2019 à Douai. Elle concerne la valorisation des sables de béton recyclé (dimensions inférieures à 4 mm) dans des formulations de mortier. Les comportements à l'état frais et durci de mortiers fabriqués avec du sable recyclé et du sable naturel modèle sont comparés. Une piste de valorisation pour les particules inférieures à 125 µm est également étudiée : il s'agit d'utiliser la poudre issue du broyage des granulats de béton recyclé comme addition minérale. C. COLMAN a soutenu sa thèse le 7 décembre 2020 par visioconférence. Elle a étudié le risque lié à la présence de résidus de plâtres dans les granulats et les sables recyclés. Elle met en évidence le fait que la limite actuelle de 0,2% pour la teneur en sulfates (norme EN 206) semble trop stricte et freine la valorisation de sables recyclés dans des bétons durables et résistants. Une teneur en sulfates jusque 0,3 % pourrait être admissible. A. Grellier a soutenu sa thèse par visioconférence le 14 décembre 2020. Elle a travaillé sur la valorisation des fines de briques dans les ciments Portland composés et les matériaux alcali-activés. La valorisation dans le ciment est concluante avec des taux de substitution jusqu’à 20%. Pour les matériaux alcali-activés, elle a démontré que les fines de brique (granulométrie D50 = 20 µm) peuvent être un précurseur équivalent au laitier de Haut-Fourneau et permettent d’atteindre des performances mécaniques qui restent élevées jusqu’à 50% de substitution. En ce qui concerne la validation technique et environnementale des matières issues du recyclage de déchets de démolition, l'INISMa étudie des possibilités de valorisation des mixtes briques/béton en briqueterie et en géotechnique. La substitution, dans la composition des briques, d'une partie de la fraction argileuse par du recyclé 0/2 mm broyé à moins de 100 µm donne de bons résultats en termes mécaniques et esthétiques. En géotechnique, les critères d'utilisation peuvent être atteints mais ces performances se dégradent très vite dès lors que l'on s'écarte faiblement de la teneur optimale en eau. L'ajout de liants inorganiques permet de réduire cette sensibilité à l'eau. La valorisation de ces mixtes dans des Matériaux Autocompactants Réexcavables (MAR) est également étudiée. L'INISMa travaille sur 2 formulations qui doivent être optimisées (maîtrise de la rhéologie via l'ajout d'adjuvants). Suite à une étude bibliographique, deux tests d'étalement du coulis ont été sélectionnés et devraient permettre d'objectiver la coulabilité des mélanges. Les mesures d’étalement se révèlent efficaces pour évaluer la coulabilité des mélanges et leur possibilité d’autocompactage. De son côté, Néo-Eco a développé un outil de suivi environnemental. L'installation, opérationnelle depuis novembre 2017, permet d'effectuer des essais de lixiviation de produits issus de formulations spécifiques contenant des déchets, et de comparer des planches expérimentales à base de matériaux recyclés avec des matériaux témoins. Grâce à cet outil, Néo-Eco a réalisé une étude visant à vérifier l'innocuité environnementale de formulations à base de déchets du BTP. Trois formulations, réalisées par l'IMT Lille Douai, ont été testées : - une formulation de référence, composée de ciment, de filler calcaire, de sable et d'eau ; - une formulation dans laquelle le filler calcaire est entièrement substitué par de la brique finement broyée ; - une formulation dans laquelle le filler et le sable sont respectivement substitués par des fines de briques et des fines terreuses. Néo-Eco a par ailleurs réalisé des essais de validation d'équipements industriels sur des chantiers de déconstruction (concasseur à percussion, crible, séparateur aéraulique, machine de flottation, ...) ; et a participé à la valorisation de déchets issus de la déconstruction sur le site Leroy Merlin à Douai. Dans le cadre de l'activité dédiée à l'analyse du cycle de vie (ACV), ULiege-PEPs et le CD2E ont réalisé une étude bibliographique concernant la valorisation des déchets recyclés, les PEF (Performance Environmental Footprint), les méthodes d'évaluation des impacts et modèles, ... Par ailleurs, ULiège-PEPs a effectué deux études ACV : la première, motivée par les résultats positifs obtenus par l'INISMa, concerne la substitution partielle de l'argile par du recyclé mixte finement broyé dans la fabrication des briques; la seconde porte sur le recyclage des agrégats et des fractions fines provenant du chantier de démolition du magasin Leroy Merlin de Douai. Une partie de la fraction 4-20 mm issue de ce chantier a été utilisée dans le béton de la dalle du nouveau magasin de Tourcoing. La fraction fine (0-4 mm) a été recyclée sous forme de dalles de "Wasterial" par EtNISI. Enfin, une veille législative sur les trois versants (français, wallon et flamand) est réalisée par le CTP. Elle est notamment alimentée grâce à des contacts avec la CCW-VCB, TRACIMAT (système de traçabilité mis en place en Flandre au 24/08/2018) et la FFB/SEDDRE.

The work module dedicated to applied research favors crossborder activities, at least 2 complementary partners from different region will collaborate. It is expected that 4 pairs will continue their collaboration after the end of the project.

Nombre de collaborations transfrontalières encore effectives après la fin du projet : 4. L’organisation du projet dans son module « Recherche Appliquée » favorise très fortement les relations entre opérateurs de chaque versant. Il sera fait appel à au moins deux opérateurs complémentaires de versants différents pour l’ensemble des activités et il est attendu qu’au moins 4 « binômes » continueront à travailler ensemble après la fin du projet.

Grensoverschrijdende samenwerking na afloop van het project: 4. Grensoverschrijdende samenwerking. De werkmodule voor toegepast onderzoek bevordert grensoverschrijdende activiteiten, waarbij ten minste twee complementaire partners uit verschillende regio's samenwerken. Verwacht wordt dat 4 paar na afloop van het project hun samenwerking zullen voortzetten.

Supported Companies : 15. For each area (Wallonia, France, Flanders), at least 1 company from each of the 5 industrial sectors identified will be supported. We will start wil demolition and treatment companies, then we will contact companies involved in public road works, ready to use concrete mix and prefabricated concrete.

Nb d’entreprises bénéficiant d’un soutien : 15. Pour chaque versant (France, Wallonie, Flandres), au moins une entreprise dans chacun des cinq secteurs industriels cibles identifiés bénéficiera d’un soutien. Dans un premier temps, les entreprises concernées seront essentiellement celles actives dans le secteur de la démolition et les centres de traitement autorisés. Ensuite, il s’agira essentiellement d’entreprises actives dans la fabrication de bétons et dans la construction routière. Nb d’entreprises bénéficiant d’un soutien pour introduire des produits nouveaux pour l’entreprise : 4. Il s’agira de deux entreprises de chaque côté de la frontière de façon à mettre en évidence au moins deux « success story » liées à l’action transfrontalière forte du projet.

Aantal gesensibiliseerde bedrijven: 15. Voor elk gebied (Wallonië, Frankrijk, Vlaanderen) zal minstens 1 onderneming uit elk van de 5 genoemde industriële sectoren worden gesteund. We zullen een begin maken met de sloop- en verwerkingsbedrijven, dan nemen we contact op met bedrijven die betrokken zijn bij openbare wegenwerken, gebruiksklaar betonmix en geprefabriceerd beton.
