Les régions Champagne-Ardenne, Picardie, Wallonie et Flandres sont des régions au sein desquelles la culture du blé est abondante. Actuellement, les glucides (l’essentiel de la masse du son de blé) sont trop peu exploités pour la production de molécules à haute valeur ajoutée. Le projet ValBran vise alors à développer de nouvelles voies de valorisation du son de blé et à produire des tensio-actifs non ioniques d’origine végétale et des esters de sucres à partir des glucides du son de blé. Plusieurs voies de transformations à l’échelle laboratoire seront mises au point, et les plus prometteuses seront sélectionnées en vue d’un transfert à échelle pilote afin d’obtenir des indications économiques et d’impact environnemental des procédés développés. L’ensemble des compétences du consortium permettra d’accroître la recherche et l’innovation dans le domaine de la valorisation du végétal au niveau des zones transfrontalières. Chaque partenaire apportera ses propres compétences et bénéficiera du savoir et des compétences complémentaires des autres partenaires ce qui permettra au projet d’avoir un fort potentiel d’innovation.

The regions of Champagne-Ardenne, Picardie, Wallonia and Flanders are significant wheat growing regions. Currently, carbohydrates (the bulk of the wheat bran) are underutilised for the production of molecules with high added value. The ValBran project aims to develop new ways of processing wheat bran and to produce plant-based non-ionic surfactants and sugar esters from wheat bran carbohydrates. Several processing methods will be developed at a laboratory scale, and the most promising will be selected with the aim of transferring them to a pilot scale in order to obtain economic indications and the environmental impact of the processes developed. The set of skills of the consortium will make it possible to improve research and innovation in the field of crop exploitation in cross-border regions. Each partner will bring their own skills and will benefit from the complementary knowledge and skills of other partners, giving the project a strong potential for innovation.

Champagne-Ardenne, Picardië, Wallonië en Vlaanderen zijn grote tarweproducenten. Vandaag worden koolhydraten (het grootste deel van de tarwezemelen) onderbenut voor de productie van moleculen met een hoge meerwaarde. Het project ValBran beoogt de ontwikkeling van nieuwe manieren om tarwezemelen te verwerken en op planten gebaseerde, niet-ionische surfactanten en suikeresters van koolhydraten in tarwezemelen te produceren. Er zullen meerdere verwerkingsmethoden worden ontwikkeld op laboratoriumschaal. De meest beloftevolle zullen worden geselecteerd en in een pilootproject toegepast om de economische prestaties en de milieu-impact van de verwerkte processen te evalueren. Dankzij de competenties van het consortium zal het mogelijk zijn het onderzoek en de innovatie op het gebied van benutting van gewassen in grensoverschrijdende regio's te verbeteren. Elke partner zal zijn eigen competenties inbrengen en tegelijk leren van de complementaire kennis en competenties van andere partners, wat het project een sterk innovatiepotentieel geeft.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet Valbran vise à développer de nouvelles voies de valorisation du son de blé, co-produit agricole issu de meuneries et de bioraffineries. Il s'agit de développer des voies originales et respectueuses de l'environnement pour la production de diverses molécules tensio-actives à partir du son de blé pour des applications à haute valeur ajoutée (cosmétiques, phytosanitaires, ...). Notre approche vise à mettre au point plusieurs voies de transformations à l'échelle laboratoire, à sélectionner la (les) plus prometteuse(s) en vue d'un transfert à échelle pilote afin d'obtenir des indications économiques et d'impact environnemental du (des) procédé(s) développé(s). Ce projet implique l'Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, l'Université de Picardie Jules Verne, le pôle IAR, l'Université de Liège, l'association wallonne Valbiom et le pôle Greenwin, le centre de recherche et technologies Vito, l'association Inagro et le pôle Catalisti. Durant le projet, des procédés enzymatiques et chimio-enzymatiques sont étudiés pour produire diverses molécules tensio-actives de type alkyl glycosides et esters de sucres à partir du son de blé. Les voies enzymatiques les plus prometteuses font l'objet d'une optimisation et la robustesse des procédés développés a été démontrée en testant différents lots de son de blé. La caractérisation des propriétés tensio-actives, des propriétés anti-bactériennes et élicitrices des molécules générées durant le projet est menée au fur et à mesure du projet afin de pouvoir cibler les molécules les plus intéressantes et d'évaluer leur potentiel d'application (tensio-actifs pour les formulations cosmétiques, pour les détergents, pour les produits phytosanitaires).Le projet a finalement réussi à accompagner et soutenir « 3 entreprises » pour le test de ces molécules tensioactives. Une étude d'analyse de cycle de vie est en cours pour évaluer l'impact environnemental des procédés mis en oeuvre dans le projet. Le consortium a publié 2 articles scientifiques sur la rupture technologique et les nouvelles molécules issues du projet. Jusqu'à présent, le consortium a participé à 27 actions de communication et a organisé deux évènements transfrontaliers dédiés au projet Valbran permettant de regrouper 166 personnes (industriels, scientifiques, étudiants, représentants politiques et journalistes : 68 néerlandophones et 98 francophones). 185 entreprises ont été jusqu'à présent informées quant au potentiel des bioraffineries par le biais du projet Valbran. Ces actions de communications sont présentées sur le site internet du projet : www.valbran.eu La plus-value transfrontalière du projet Valbran se manifeste à divers niveaux : (i) mise en commun des réseaux et des contacts de chaque partenaire pour les actions de diffusion et de communication du projet, (ii) partage des connaissances scientifiques et méthodologiques entre les partenaires pour définir des molécules cibles pertinentes, (iii) partage entre les partenaires de protocoles expérimentaux et transferts d'échantillons préparés lors du projet.

Achievements (EN):

The Valbran project aims to develop new ways of valuing wheat bran, an agricultural co-product from milling and biorefineries. It is a question of developing original and environmentally friendly pathways for the production of various tensio-active molecules from wheat bran for applications with high added value (cosmetics, phytosanitary,...). Our approach aims to develop several laboratory-scale transformation pathways, to select the most promising one(s) for pilot scale transfer in order to obtain economic and environmental impact indications of the process(s) developed. This project involves the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, the University of Picardie Jules Verne, the IAR pole, the University of Liège, the Walloon Association Valbiom and the Greenwin Pole, the Vito Research and Technology Center, the Inagro Association and the Catalisti Pole. During the project, enzymatic and chemo-enzymatic processes are studied to produce various tensioactive molecules such as alkyl glycosides and sugar esters from wheat bran. The most promising enzyme pathways are optimised and the robustness of the processes developed has been demonstrated by testing different batches of wheat bran. The characterisation of the surfactant properties, the anti-bacterial and elicitor properties of the molecules generated during the project is carried out as the project proceeds in order to be able to target the most interesting molecules and evaluate their application potential (tensio-actives for cosmetic formulations, for detergents, for plant protection products).The project finally managed to accompany and support “3 companies” for the testing of these surfactant molecules. A life cycle analysis study is underway to assess the environmental impact of the processes implemented in the project. The consortium published 2 scientific papers on the technological breakthrough and the new molecules resulting from the project. So far, the consortium has participated in 27 communication actions and has organised two cross-border events dedicated to the Valbran project, bringing together 166 people (industrial, scientists, students, political representatives and journalists: 68 Dutch-speaking and 98 French-speaking). 185 companies have so far been informed about the potential of biorefineries through the Valbran project. These communication actions are presented on the project website: www.valbran.eu The cross-border added value of the Valbran project is manifested at various levels: (I) pooling of the networks and contacts of each partner for the dissemination and communication actions of the project, (ii) sharing scientific and methodological knowledge between partners to define relevant target molecules, (iii) sharing between experimental protocol partners and sample transfers prepared during the project.

Nb de collaborations transfrontalières encore effectives après la fin du projet : 6. La coopération transfrontalière perdurera après le projet au niveau de la R&D avec l’échange d’étudiants entre partenaires du projet afin d’optimiser leur recherche ou encore la mise en place de collaborations et de partenariats élargis pour d’autres projets ; au niveau de l’innovation avec la tenue de réunions régulières de réflexion pour travailler sur la mise en place de nouveaux projets de collaboration ; et enfin au niveau européen avec la recherche de nouveaux appels à projet.

Expected Results (EN):

Number of cross-border collaborations still up and running after the end of the project: 6. The cross-border cooperation will continue after the project at R&D level with the exchange of students between project partners to optimise their research or the implementation of collaborations and extended partnerships for other projects; in terms of innovation with regular meetings for reflection on the implementation of new collaboration projects; and finally, at the European level with the search for new calls for projects.

Aantal grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingen die ook na afloop van het project nog actief zijn: 6. De grensoverschrijdende samenwerking zal ook na het project verdergaan op O&O-niveau met de uitwisseling van studenten tussen projectpartners om hun onderzoek te optimaliseren of de implementatie van samenwerkingen en uitgebreide partnerschappen voor andere projecten; in termen van innovatie met regelmatige meetings om de implementatie van nieuwe samenwerkingsprojecten te bespreken; en tot slot op Europees niveau met het zoeken naar nieuwe projectoproepen.

Nb d’entreprises bénéficiant d’un soutien : 25. Un minimum de 25 entreprises bénéficiera du support du projet ValBran. Cela sera rendu possible par le biais des réseaux importants des opérateurs du projet. Nb d’entreprises bénéficiant d’un soutien pour introduire des produits nouveaux pour l’entreprise : 4. Des échantillons de produits issus du projet seront délivrés à au moins 4 entreprises parmi celles qui bénéficieront du support du projet. Cela permettra de cibler une entreprise dans chaque région concernée. Nb d’établissements de recherche participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 3. Il s’agit de plusieurs unités de recherche au sein de l’Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne et de l’Université Picardie Jules Verne, ainsi qu’un laboratoire de l’Université de Liège. Nb d’actions d’accompagnement en transfrontalier favorisant la mobilité et l’emploi des publics cibles : 4. Quatre séminaires concernant le projet et la bioraffinerie et dédiés aux étudiants en master et aux doctorants seront organisés entre les établissements d’enseignement supérieur de la zone transfrontalière.

Number of companies receiving support: 25. A minimum of 25 companies will benefit from the support of the ValBran project. That will be made possible by way of the important networks of project operators. Number of companies receiving support to introduce new products for the company: 4. Samples of the products resulting from the project will be delivered to at least 4 companies among those that will benefit from the support of the project. This will make it possible to target one company in each region involved. Number of research establishments participating in cross-border research projects: 3. These are several research units within the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne and the University of Picardie Jules Verne, as well as a laboratory within the University of Liège. Number of cross-border support actions encouraging mobility and employment of target groups: 4. Four seminars related to the biorefinery project and dedicated to Masters and doctoral students will be organised between the higher-education teaching institutions in the cross-border region.

Aantal ondernemingen die steun ontvangen: 25. Het project ValBran zal steun verlenen aan minstens 25 ondernemingen. Dit zal mogelijk zijn dankzij de belangrijke netwerken van de projectoperatoren. Aantal ondernemingen die steun ontvangen om nieuwe producten voor de onderneming in te voeren: 4. Minstens vier van de ondernemingen die door het project worden gesteund, zullen monsters ontvangen van de producten die het project oplevert. Zo zal het mogelijk zijn in elk van de betrokken regio’s één onderneming te bereiken. Aantal onderzoeksinstellingen die deelnemen aan grensoverschrijdende onderzoeksprojecten: 3. Dit zijn onderzoekseenheden van de Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne en de Université Picardie Jules Verne, alsook een laboratorium van de Université de Liège. Aantal grensoverschrijdende ondersteunende acties die de mobiliteit en de tewerkstelling van doelgroepen aanmoedigen: 4. De hoger-onderwijsinstellingen in de grensstreek zullen vier seminaries organiseren rond het bioraffinaderijproject. Deze zijn gericht op master- en doctoraatsstudenten.
