L’alimentation du bétail représente le principal levier que le producteur peut actionner pour limiter ses coûts de production. Parmi les aliments utilisés, le tourteau de soja s’avère être une très bonne valeur nutritionnelle. Cependant, pour des raisons d’ordre économique (dépendance de l’Europe envers les marchés outre-Atlantique, importation asiatique), environnemental (déforestation, OGM, enrichissement en azote des terres), et qualitatif (traçabilité), son utilisation est de plus en plus remise en question. Accroître la valorisation des productions locales est donc une priorité pour les éleveurs laitiers. La France et la Belgique utilisent des systèmes différents pour estimer la valeur des aliments ; c’est pourquoi la mobilisation des expertises transfrontalières est alors nécessaire. L’objectif du projet PROTECOW est donc d’aider les éleveurs laitiers à améliorer leurs résultats techniques et économiques grâce à des échanges de connaissances et d’expériences entre les trois régions. Il s’agira d’améliorer la rentabilité des élevages laitiers et de limiter les apports d’azote dans les rations des vaches laitières, ainsi que l’utilisation du soja par litre de lait produit. Pour cela, trois types d’actions seront mises en place : la création d’un club transfrontalier d’éleveurs laitiers, le transfert des résultats de la recherche sur les exploitations, et l’augmentation des interactions sur l’axe classique recherche-conseil-éleveur dans le deux sens.

Livestock feed is the main lever that farmers can act upon to limit production costs. Among the feeds used, soya meal proves to be of very good nutritional value. However, for economic (Europe’s dependence on cross-Atlantic markets, Asian imports), environmental (deforestation, GMO, nitrogen enrichment of land), and qualitative (traceability) reasons, its use is increasingly questioned. Increasing the added value of local products is, therefore, a priority for dairy farmers. France and Belgium use different systems to estimate the value of their feed; that is why the mobilisation of cross-border expertise is necessary. The goal of the PROTECOW project is, therefore, to help dairy farmers improve their technical and economic results thanks to the exchange of knowledge and experience between the three regions. It will consist of improving the profitability of dairy farms and limiting nitrogen intake in dairy rations, as well as the use of soya per litre of milk produced. To do so, three types of measures will be put in place: the creation of a cross-border club of dairy farmers, transfer of the research results to the farms, greater two-way interaction between the traditional research-consultant-breeder configuration.

Dierenvoer is de voornaamste as waarop boeren zich kunnen richten om hun productiekosten te beperken. Onder de verschillende types heeft voer op basis van soja al bewezen een zeer hoge voedingswaarde te hebben. Maar het gebruik ervan wordt steeds meer in vraag gesteld om economische redenen (de Europese afhankelijkheid van trans-Atlantische markten), milieuredenen (ontbossing, GMO, verrijking van landbouwgrond met stikstof) en kwaliteitsredenen (traceerbaarheid). De meerwaarde van plaatselijke producten verhogen is dan ook een prioriteit voor de melkveehouders. Frankrijk en België hanteren verschillende systemen om de waarde van hun voer te ramen. Daarom is het nodig grensoverschrijdende expertise in te zetten. Het doel van het project PROTECOW is de melkveehouders te helpen hun technische en economische resultaten te verbeteren door de uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring tussen de drie regio’s. De ambitie is de rendabiliteit van de melkveebedrijven te verhogen en de input van stikstof in de rantsoenen en het gebruik van soja per geproduceerde liter melk te beperken. Hiertoe zullen drie types maatregelen worden getroffen: de oprichting van een grensoverschrijdende club van melkveehouders, overdracht van de onderzoeksresultaten naar de boerderijen en meer tweerichtings interactie in de traditionele configuratie van onderzoekers/consultants en melkveehouders.

Achievements (FR):

Tout au long du projet PROTECOW, les partenaires Avenir Conseil Elevage, CRA-W, Idele, Inagro et ILVO ont étroitement collaboré entre eux et avec le club transfrontalier de 18 éleveurs (6 français, 6 flamands et 6 wallons). Expériences transfrontalières et innovations scientifiques ont ainsi pu être échangées entre les éleveurs laitiers, les conseillers et les chercheurs dans le but d’améliorer l’efficience de l’alimentation azotée et la rentabilité des exploitations laitières. Les nombreux résultats du projet ont été largement reconnus dans le secteur laitier. Afin de toucher le plus grand nombre, ils ont été diffusés sous des formes diverses telles que des fiches-techniques (9 fiches proposant des solutions pour améliorer l'autonomie protéique des élevages, 5 fiches simulations sur l'impact technique et économique du remplacement du tourteau de soja par une autre solution, 2 fiches durabilité avec des bonnes pratiques pour réduire les émissions d’ammoniac) ou de vidéos avec 5 films en motion design et 1 diaporama commenté. En fin de projet, pour communiquer sur les résultats obtenus tout en respectant les normes sanitaires COVID-19 d’application en fin d’année 2020, l’équipe PROTECOW a élaboré une « vidéo-campagne ». Ainsi, un ensemble de vidéo a été réalisée : une vidéo avec témoignages d’éleveurs de chaque versant, quatre vidéo-leçons thématiques (gestion de l’herbe, autonomie alimentaire, efficacité alimentaire et l’analyse de la rentabilité de l’élevage) et un webinaire avec une visite numérique d’un élevage wallon. Cette campagne vidéo a connu un grand succès avec une couverture totale de plus de 190.000 personnes. Les vidéos sont disponibles sur le site www.interreg-protecow.eu (dans la section documents) et sur la chaîne YouTube de PROTECOW. Tous les outils de communication utilisés pour diffuser les résultats peuvent être consultés sur le site web ‘www.interreg-protecow.eu’ qui a eu quelque 35.000 visiteurs au cours de la durée du projet. Les résultats et les informations techniques du projet PROTECOW ont été diffusés également par les médias sociaux (quelque 500 fans pour le page Facebook et des partages par des comptes professionnels (Facebook + Twitter) des partenaires). Notre approche transfrontalière avec ses résultats très positifs, a également intéressée la presse spécialisée des 3 versants. Cela a donné lieu à plus de 80 articles présentant les bonnes pratiques des producteurs laitiers des deux côtés de la frontière. Nos voyages transfrontaliers y ont également contribué. De nombreux contacts transfrontaliers ont ainsi été établis au sein du secteur, contacts qui seront également maintenus après la fin du projet. En termes de résultats, le projet a abordé la question de l’autonomie protéique des élevages laitiers sous différents angles. Afin de bien caractériser l'efficience d'utilisation des ressources protéiques des élevages laitiers, un inventaire des pratiques d'alimentation a été initié. Les opérateurs ont comparé les rations transfrontalières en se basant sur une approche similaire et ils ont identifié des rations efficientes en azote dans les conditions de pratique. De la conduite de leurs troupeaux à la manière de gérer leurs prairies, des discussions autour de l'intensification et l'organisation du travail en élevage, à l'actualité sur le stress thermique, en passant par leurs résultats technico-économiques, différents sujets sont abordés lors des réunions du club transfrontalier afin d'élargir la vision de chacun. Les nombreux échanges au sein de ce club transfrontalier avec des producteurs laitiers, des chercheurs et des conseillers ont été le moteur du projet. Ces échanges ont permis ainsi aux participants de partager leurs réussites et leurs expériences plus mitigées, afin de progresser ensemble avec l'appui des conseillers de chacun des partenaires. Après quatre années, le « bilan PROTECOW » s’avère positif puisque les marges brutes ont évolué positivement dans les 3 régions (+24 à +33%) tandis que les écarts entre les éleveurs ont diminué (-42% entre 2017/2018 et 2019/2020) en utilisant les meilleures pratiques des deux côtés de la frontière. Les échanges de pratique ont permis de partager les connaissances de manière transfrontalière entre les éleveurs mais aussi avec les conseillers. Il en résulte un certain « effet cascade » puisque les bons résultats obtenus dans le club transfrontalier PROTECOW ont ensuite été diffusés par les conseillers. Au total, on recense un total de 105 réunions de groupes de discussion PROTECOW – qu’ils aient été créés dans le cadre du projet ou concernent d’autres groupes d’éleveurs, animés par ces mêmes conseillers ou par d’autres conseillers informés de nos résultats. En outre, la collaboration éleveurs/conseillers/scientifiques a permis de tester la faisabilité des innovations envisagées pour améliorer l’autonomie des exploitations. L’ensemble des connaissances acquises seront également inclues dans les conseils donnés aux élevages laitiers après la fin du projet, afin que les résultats et les méthodologies transfrontaliers du projet puissent être davantage diffusés et appliqués. Les rations françaises et belges présentent un équilibre "herbe-maïs" différent, avec davantage d'herbe conservée en Belgique et plus de maïs ensilage en France. Ainsi la part d'herbe conservée représente 24% de la ration annuelle en Belgique. Les autres fourrages sont davantage présents en France notamment à travers une consommation supérieure de pulpes de betteraves surpressées. Enfin, dans les deux pays, la part de pâturage est faible en moyenne. Les concentres sont plus présents dans la ration en Belgique. Les performances laitières associées à ces rations sont d'un bon niveau et supérieures aux moyennes nationales des deux pays. Les niveaux de production laitière sont identiques mais le taux butyreux est toujours inférieur en France. L'évaluation des rations au niveau de l'utilisation de l'azote nécessite des chiffres précis sur les quantités données et le niveau de l'azote dans les aliments. Depuis l'automne 2018, des données précises ont été collectées dans les 18 exploitations du club transfrontalier afin de pouvoir évaluer ces rations plus en détail. Il apparait que comparer les rations entre différentes exploitations transfrontalières est un grand défi. Les partenaires techniques du projet ont échangé leurs expériences sur la manière de combiner le système français INRA (unité encombrement lait-UEL) et le système belge CVB (valeur structure) pour pouvoir mieux comparer les rations et de combiner les plus-values des 2 systèmes. La complexité des formules utilisées de chaque côté de la frontière explique également qu’aucun outil de comparaison n’ait été développé auparavant. Pour répondre à cette problématique, le CRA-W a développé sur Excel un outil appelé « PROTERAT » qui permet d’analyser une ration pour vaches laitières dans les deux systèmes de rationnement. Ainsi grâce à ce projet, il a été possible pour la première fois de comparer les rations de manière rigoureuse. En outre, les nombreux échanges entre les partenaires ont permis de partager et d’intégrer les points forts de chacun des deux systèmes dans les conseils transfrontaliers. Le conseil français a inclus désormais la valeur de structure du fourrage venant du système belge. Les partenaires belges ont adapté leur calcul de ration avec une meilleure estimation de la consommation de matière sèche par la vache (via l’UEL – Unité d’Encombrement Laitière) et ils ont intégré du système français l'évaluation des rations en termes d'acidification du rumen. A l'avenir, le calcul des rations sera donc enrichi par ces nouvelles approches. Dans les élevages, on a pu constater une grande variation entre les exploitations au niveau de la matière azotée disponible dans le rumen et l'urée du lait. Une telle variation indique qu'il existe des possibilités pour améliorer l'efficacité de l'azote. Les opérateurs ont identifié des rations efficaces en azote afin de réduire les émissions d'ammoniac. Dans chaque versant, une stratégie alimentaire a été suivi afin d’étudier son efficience azotée et son impact sur les émissions d’ammoniac en réalisant des simulations avec l’outil néerlandais « Kringloopwijzer » . Avec cet outil de gestion, il est possible d’examiner l’impact d’un certain changement sur l’exploitation sur les émissions d’ammoniac. Par exemple, l’impact du remplacement du tourteau de soja par du tourteau de colza avec supplémentation de lysine protégée, l’impact de la gestion de concentrés et l’impact de l’alimentation à volonté ont été étudiés pour calculer l’efficience azotée. Les résultats de ces essais pratiques ont été valorisés dans les fiches durabilité et un article sur le site web. En outre, les résultats ont également été présentés dans la deuxième leçon vidéo (autonomie régionale). A la fin du projet, les opérateurs ont partagé les résultats techniques avec les opérateurs du projet Interreg Grande Région ‘Autoprot’ (www.autoprot.eu) puisque leurs thématiques de recherches sont comparables. Un point particulier a également été fait sur la stratégie « communication PROTECOW » mise en place tout au long de la durée du projet et qui a permis la bonne diffusion de nos résultats (pendant et même après le projet).

Throughout the PROTECOW project, the partners Avenir Conseil Elevage, CRA-W, Idele, Inagro and ILVO worked closely with each other and with the cross-border club of 18 breeders (6 French, 6 Flemish and 6 Walloons). Cross-border experiences and scientific innovations were thus exchanged between dairy farmers, advisors and researchers in order to improve the efficiency of nitrogen feed and the profitability of dairy farms. The many results of the project have been widely recognised in the dairy sector. In order to reach the greatest number, they were distributed in various forms such as technical sheets (9 sheets offering solutions to improve the protein autonomy of farms, 5 simulation sheets on the technical and economic impact of replacing soybean meal with another solution, 2 sustainability sheets with good practices to reduce ammonia emissions) or videos with 5 motion design films and 1 slideshow commented. At the end of the project, to communicate the results achieved while respecting the COVID-19 health standards of application at the end of 2020, the PROTECOW team developed a “video-campaign”. Thus, a set of video was made: a video with testimonials of breeders from each slope, four thematic video lessons (grass management, food autonomy, food efficiency and analysis of the profitability of livestock farming) and a webinar with a digital visit of a Walloon livestock. This video campaign was a great success with a total coverage of more than 190,000 people. The videos are available on www.interreg-protecow.eu (in the documents section) and on PROTECOW’s YouTube channel. All the communication tools used to disseminate the results can be found on the website which has had some 35,000 visitors during the duration of the project. The results and technical information of the PROTECOW project were also disseminated via social media (some 500 fans for the Facebook page and shares by professional accounts (Facebook + Twitter) of partners). Our cross-border approach, with its very positive results, has also interested the specialised press of the 3 sides. This resulted in more than 80 articles presenting the best practices of dairy farmers on both sides of the border. Our cross-border travel has also contributed to this. Many cross-border contacts have been established within the sector, which will also be maintained after the end of the project. In terms of results, the project addressed the issue of protein autonomy of dairy farms from different angles. In order to properly characterise the efficiency of the use of protein resources in dairy farms, an inventory of feeding practices has been initiated. Operators compared cross-border rations based on a similar approach and identified nitrogen efficient rations under practice conditions. From driving their herds to how to manage their meadows, from discussions about the intensification and organisation of livestock work, to current events on thermal stress, to their technical and economic results, different topics are discussed at the cross-border club meetings in order to broaden everyone’s vision. The numerous exchanges within this cross-border club with dairy producers, researchers and advisors were the driving force behind the project. These exchanges allowed participants to share their successes and experiences more mixed, in order to progress together with the support of the advisors of each of the partners. After four years, the “PROTECOW balance sheet” turned out to be positive as gross margins evolved positively in the 3 regions (+ 24 to + 33 %) while the differences between breeders decreased (-42 % between 2017/2018 and 2019/2020) using best practices on both sides of the border. Exchanges of practice have made it possible to share knowledge in a cross-border way between breeders but also with counsellors. This results in a certain “cascade effect” since the good results achieved in the cross-border club PROTECOW were then disseminated by the advisors. In total, there are a total of 105 PROTECOW focus group meetings — whether created as part of the project or involving other breeders’ groups, facilitated by the same advisors or by other advisors who are informed of our results. In addition, the collaboration of breeders/advisors/scientists has made it possible to test the feasibility of the innovations envisaged to improve the autonomy of farms. All the knowledge acquired will also be included in the advice given to dairy farms after the end of the project, so that the cross-border results and methodologies of the project can be further disseminated and applied. The French and Belgian rations have a different “grass-maize” balance, with more grass preserved in Belgium and more maize silaged in France. Thus, the share of preserved grass accounts for 24 % of the annual ration in Belgium. Other fodder is more present in France, particularly through a higher consumption of overpressed beet pulps. Finally, in both countries, the share of grazing is low on average. Concentrates are more present in the ration in Belgium. The dairy performance associated with these rations is of a good level and above the national averages of both countries. Milk production levels are the same, but the buty rate is still lower in France. The assessment of rations at the level of nitrogen use requires precise figures on the quantities given and the level of nitrogen in food. Since autumn 2018, precise data have been collected from the 18 farms of the cross-border club in order to be able to assess these rations in more detail. Comparing rations between different cross-border farms appears to be a big challenge. The technical partners of the project exchanged experiences on how to combine the French INRA system (milk-UEL congestion unit) and the Belgian CVB system (structure value) in order to better compare rations and combine the added value of the two systems. The complexity of the formulas used on each side of the border also explains that no comparison tool has been developed before. To address this problem, CRA-W has developed on Excel a tool called “PROTERAT” that allows to analyse a ration for dairy cows in both rationing systems. Thanks to this project, it was possible for the first time to compare rations rigorously. In addition, the numerous exchanges between the partners allowed for the sharing and integration of the strengths of each of the two systems in cross-border councils. The French council has now included the structure value of fodder from the Belgian system. The Belgian partners have adapted their ration calculation with a better estimate of the consumption of dry matter by cows (via the UEL — Unité d’Encurement Laitière) and they have integrated into the French system the evaluation of rations in terms of acidification of rumen. In the future, the calculation of rations will therefore be enriched by these new approaches. On farms there was a large variation between holdings in the nitrogen material available in rumen and milk urea. Such a variation indicates that there are opportunities to improve nitrogen efficiency. Operators have identified efficient nitrogen rations to reduce ammonia emissions. In each slope, a food strategy was followed in order to study its nitrogen efficiency and its impact on ammonia emissions by performing simulations with the Dutch tool “Kringloopwijzer”. With this management tool, it is possible to examine the impact of a certain change on exploitation on ammonia emissions. For example, the impact of the replacement of soybean meal with rapeseed meal with protected lysine supplementation, the impact of concentrate management and the impact of diet at will were studied to calculate nitrogen efficiency. The results of these practical tests have been highlighted in the sustainability sheets and an article on the website. In addition, the results were also presented in the second video lesson (regional autonomy). At the end of the project, the operators shared the technical results with the Interreg Grande Région Autoprot (www.autoprot.eu) since their research themes are comparable. A particular point was also made on the strategy “Protecow communication” implemented throughout the duration of the project and which allowed the proper dissemination of our results (during and even after the project).

L’originalité du projet est de réunir des éleveurs, des conseillers et des chercheurs des trois régions dans les mêmes exploitations transfrontalières afin de se pencher, ensemble, sur une thématique importante pour la durabilité des exploitations laitières : l’alimentation. Chaque exploitation fera l’objet d’un suivi spécifique, réalisé conjointement, afin d’identifier les pistes permettant d’optimiser leur système et ainsi, d’améliorer leur durabilité. Ces pistes seront par ailleurs relayées dans les groupes d’agriculteurs pour en faire bénéficier le plus grand nombre pour le secteur.

The originality of the project is to bring breeders, consultants and researchers together from the three regions on the same cross-border farms in order to reflect together on an important theme for the sustainability of dairy farms: feed. Each farm will be the subject of a specific follow-up, carried out jointly, in order to identify the solutions that will enable them to optimise their system and secure their sustainability. Furthermore, these solutions will be passed on within the farmers’ groups to benefit as many farms as possible within the sector.

Het originele aan het project is dat het melkveehouders, consultants en onderzoekers van de drie regio’s verenigt op dezelfde, grensoverschrijdende boerderijen om samen na te denken over een belangrijk thema voor de duurzaamheid van melkveebedrijven: het voer. Elke boerderij zal aan een specifieke, gezamenlijk uitgevoerde opvolging worden onderworpen om de oplossingen te vinden die hen in staat zullen stellen hun systeem te optimaliseren en hun duurzaamheid te garanderen. Deze oplossingen zullen binnen de groeperingen van landbouwers worden verspreid, zodat zoveel mogelijk boerderijen uit de sector er baat bij hebben.
