Description (EN):

The use of conventional plant protection products in agriculture leads to the degradation of water and air quality, and has recognised impacts on biodiversity and human health. Furthermore, the lack of bio-based products available is often an obstacle to the implementation of agroecology or the transition from conventional agriculture to sustainable agriculture. In order to meet a growing demand for the development of environmentally-friendly sustainable agriculture in the cross-border region, the BioScreen project aims to research and identify new molecules of biological and multifunctional origin for the biocontrol of phytopathogenic agents in the cross-border region. Thus, a high-throughput screening platform will be set up to identify new molecules with antifungal activity and/or induce plant resistance against phytopathogenic agents. The BioScreen project will also develop training and communication actions through the organisation of symposiums, seminars and summer universities. This project aims to establish a common training platform that will enable all interested students or cross-border institutions, to specialise their training in the field of biological control.

Het gebruik van conventionele synthetische pesticiden in de landbouw tast de kwaliteit van de lucht en het water aan en heeft welbekende gevolgen voor de biodiversiteit en de gezondheid van de mens. Bovendien vormt het gebrek aan beschikbare biogebaseerde producten vaak een hindernis voor de invoering van agro-ecologie of de overgang van conventionele naar duurzame landbouw. Om aan de groeiende vraag naar de ontwikkeling van milieuvriendelijke landbouw in de grensstreek te voldoen, beoogt het project BioScreen het onderzoek naar en de identificatie van nieuwe moleculen van biologische en multifunctionele oorsprong voor de biologische bestrijding van plantpathogene agenten in het grensgebied. Zo zal een screeningplatform met een snelle doorvoer worden geïmplementeerd om nieuwe moleculen met antifungale werking te identificeren en/of de weerstand van planten tegen plantpathogenen uit te lokken. Het project BioScreen zal ook opleidings- en communicatieacties ontwikkelen door de organisatie van symposia, seminaries en zomeruniversiteiten. Dit project beoogt de oprichting van een gemeenschappelijk opleidingsplatform dat alle geïnteresseerde studenten of grensoverschrijdende instellingen de mogelijkheid biedt om hun opleiding op het gebied van biologische bestrijding te perfectioneren.

L’utilisation de produits phytosanitaires conventionnels de synthèse en agriculture engendre une dégradation de la qualité des eaux et de l’air, et possède des impacts reconnus sur la biodiversité et la santé humaine. Qui plus est, l’absence de produits biosourcés disponibles est souvent un obstacle à la mise en place de l’agroécologie ou à la transition agriculture conventionnelle/agriculture durable. Afin de répondre à une demande croissante pour le développement d’une agriculture durable respectueuse de l’environnement sur la région transfrontalière, le projet BioScreen vise donc à rechercher et identifier de nouvelles molécules d’origine biologique et multifonctionnelles pour le biocontrôle des agents phytopathogènes des cultures de la région transfrontalière. Ainsi, une plateforme de criblage haut-débit sera mise en place pour identifier de nouvelles molécules à activité antifongique et/ou inductrices de résistance des plantes contre les agents phytopathogènes. Le projet BioScreen développera aussi des actions de formation et de communication, à travers l’organisation de colloques, de séminaires et d’universités d’été. Ce projet vise à établir une plateforme commune de formation qui permettra à des étudiants ou à des établissements transfrontaliers qui le désirent, de spécialiser leur formation dans le domaine de la lutte biologique.

Achievements (EN):

The use of conventional synthetic plant protection products in agriculture degrades water and air quality and leads to recognised impacts on biodiversity and human health. In addition, the lack of available biobased products is often an obstacle to the development of agroecology or the transition to conventional/sustainable agriculture. The BioScreen project, part of the SMARTBIOCONTROL portfolio (http://www.smartbiocontrol.eu) and co-financed by the INTERREG France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen programme, aims to research and identify new molecules of biological and multifunctional origin for the biocontrol of plant pathogens in crops in the cross-border region and have no impact on human health and the environment. With a duration of 4 years, the project has a budget of more than EUR 3 million, of which 1.7 million ERDF grants. Since the beginning of the project, a molecule screening platform has been set up by the 9 operators. Several new amphiphilic molecules have been produced and new fungal and bacterial biocontrol strains have been characterised involving operators from the University of Artois (UArtois), the University of Lille (ULille), the Université Catholique Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), the University of Liège Gembloux AgroBioTech (GxABT) and the University of Ghent (UGent). Screening based on plant defence stimulation activities and antimicrobial activities has identified several new candidate strains/molecules within the framework of the platform set up by the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA), the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), the ISA of Lille (ISA), the University of Liège Gembloux AgroBioTech (GxABT) and the University of Ghent (UGent). Similarly, communication actions including presentations at multiple symposia, congresses, conferences and general assemblies (including several international ones) bringing together the entire partnership have been carried out. We can mention, among other things, the participation of the Bioscreen project in the departmental General Assembly of a national agricultural union FNSEA (Pas de Calais, France), the 69th annual symposium on crop protection, the 12nd EFPP/SFP conference, the 1st international symposium on plant bioprotection sciences and technologies Plant BioProtect, the PSE Young Scientists’ Meeting — Natural Products in Health, Agro-food and Cosmetics, JOBIM 2017, the 7th Congress of European Microbiologists FEMS 2017, the 2nd PlantBioProtech Congress 2019 and the 2nd Biennial of cereal innovation: Phloem 2020. As part of the project, 12 scientific papers were published. The project has also been the subject of several press articles, for example in the “Belgian Research in Europe”. On the teaching side, the project contributes to the training of many students or young researchers, whether through their recruitment on Bioscreen or by creating a joint course session with partner universities on the scientific results and cross-border added value of a project such as this one. To date, 222 students/doctoral students have benefited from training activities within the framework of the project.

De plus, l'absence de produits biosourcés disponibles est souvent un obstacle au développement de l'agro-écologie ou à la transition agriculture conventionnelle/agriculture durable. Le projet BioScreen, inscrit dans le portefeuille SMARTBIOCONTROL (http://www.smartbiocontrol.eu) et cofinancé par le programme INTERREG France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen, vise à rechercher et identifier de nouvelles molécules d'origine biologique et multifonctionnelles pour le biocontrôle des agents phytopathogènes des cultures de la région transfrontalière et n'ayant pas d'impact sur la santé humaine et l'environnement. D'une durée de 4 ans, le projet bénéficie d'un budget de plus de 3 millions d'euros, dont 1,7 millions de subvention FEDER. Depuis le début du projet, une plateforme de criblage de molécules a été mise en place par les 9 opérateurs. Plusieurs molécules amphiphiles nouvelles ont été produites et de nouvelles souches fongiques et bactériennes de biocontrôle ont été caractérisées impliquant les opérateurs de l'Université d'Artois (UArtois), de l'Université de Lille (ULille), de l'Université Catholique Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), de l'Université de Liège Gembloux AgroBioTech (GxABT) et de l'Université de Gand (UGent). Le criblage sur la base d'activés de stimulation de défense des plantes et d'activités antimicrobiennes a permis d'identifier plusieurs nouvelles souches/molécules candidates dans le cadre de la plateforme mise en place par l'Université de Reims Champagne- Ardenne (URCA), l'Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), l'ISA de Lille (ISA), l'Université de Liège Gembloux AgroBioTech (GxABT) et l'Université de Gand (UGent). De même, des actions de communication incluant des présentations à de multiples colloques, congrès, conférences et assemblées générales (dont plusieurs internationaux) regroupant l'ensemble du partenariat ont été réalisées. Nous pouvons citer, entre autres, la participation du projet Bioscreen à l'Assemblée Générale Départementale d'un syndicat agricole national FNSEA (Pas de Calais, France), le 69ème symposium annuel sur la protection des cultures, la 12ème conférence EFPP/SFP, le 1er symposium international sur les sciences et technologies de bioprotection des plantes Plant BioProtect, le PSE Young Scientists' Meeting - Natural Products in Health, Agro-food and Cosmetics, le JOBIM 2017, le 7ème congrès des microbiologistes européens FEMS 2017, le 2eme congrès PlantBioProtech 2019 et à la 2eme biennale de l'innovation céréalière : Phloème 2020.
