Currently, few biocontrol products are used. These products often have good efficacy in the lab but this is not always validated in the field. Furthermore, the number of biofungicides and biocontrol tools available on the market is far and few between. The objective of this project is, therefore, to promote the use of biocontrol products in the cross-border region to fight in a more sustainable manner against diseases in agriculture. The field of biocontrol against plant diseases is not well studied and, as a result, knowledge on this topic has not progressed sufficiently in recent years. In this project, we propose the validation of new biofungicides and biocontrol products on several very important pathosystems in the cross-border region, and to increase the effectiveness of the biocontrol products available on the market by: on the one hand, searching for optimal conditions of application of new and existing biocontrol products; on the other hand, training farmers in the use of biocontrol products.

Momenteel worden weinig biologische gewasbeschermingsmiddelen gebruikt. Deze producten vertonen vaak een hoge doeltreffendheid in het laboratorium, die echter niet altijd wordt gevalideerd op het terrein. Bovendien zijn er weinig biofungiciden en biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen beschikbaar op de markt. Het doel van dit project is daarom het gebruik van biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen in de grensstreek te bevorderen om ziekten in de landbouw op een duurzamere manier te bestrijden. Er is nog niet veel onderzoek gedaan naar de biologische bestrijding van plantenziekten en de kennis over dit onderwerp is de laatste jaren dan ook niet genoeg gevorderd. In dit project stellen we de validatie voor van nieuwe biofungiciden en biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen op meerdere, heel belangrijke pathosystemen in de grensstreek. Het project beoogt een verhoging van de doeltreffendheid van de biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen die op de markt beschikbaar zijn door te zoeken naar de optimale toepassingsvoorwaarden van nieuwe en bestaande biologische bestrijdingsmiddelen en door landbouwers op te leiden in het gebruik van deze producten.

Actuellement, peu de produits de biocontrôle sont utilisés. Ces produits présentent souvent une bonne efficacité au labo mais celle-ci n’est pas toujours validée au champ. De plus, le nombre de biofongicides et d’outils de biocontrôle existant sur le marché est faible. L’objectif de ce projet est alors de favoriser l’utilisation des produits de biocontrôle dans la région transfrontalière afin de lutter de façon plus durable contre les maladies en agriculture. Le domaine du biocontrôle contre les maladies des plantes n’est pas très étudié et, par conséquent, les connaissances sur ce thème n’ont pas suffisamment progressé ces dernières années. Dans ce projet, nous proposons de valider de nouveaux biofongicides et de nouveaux produits de biocontrôle sur plusieurs pathosystèmes très importants de la région transfrontalière, et d’augmenter l’efficacité des produits de biocontrôle disponibles sur le marché par : d’une part, la recherche des conditions optimales d’application des nouveaux produits de biocontrôle et ceux déjà existants ; d’autre part, la formation des agriculteurs à l’utilisation des produits de biocontrôle.

Achievements (EN):

BioProtect is part of the SMARTBIOCONTROL project portfolio, which includes 5 projects (BioScreen, BioProd, BioSens, BioProtect and BioComgest). The interaction between BioProtect and the other 4 projects is as follows: BIOScreen provides BioProtect partners with knowledge on the mode of action and also conducts research on new biomocecules for crop protection. If interesting biomolecules are discovered, they will be tested in small-scale trials by BioProtect partners, among others. Formulated products (such as lipopeptides) are provided by BioProd for small-scale, greenhouse or field testing within BioProtect. From Biosens, BioProtect partners receive biosensors to detect biocontrol products and field diseases. Based on the tests, BioProtect can then give feedback to other partners/projects on the operation of their products/sensors. Finally, BioComgest is the coordination project and leads the transfer of information. During the first three years of the project, the objectives of the different work packages were dealt with in practice and practically. Regular meetings were held on both sides of the border and established a work plan for the next 4 years through strong cross-border cooperation. Multiple exchanges took place between the partners of the other projects in order to reinforce the work in synergy between the projects and combine skills as well as the first results. During the first year of the project, various communication activities were carried out. Among these, a website (www.smartbiocontrol.eu), posters, presentations, articles, a press conference, etc. Then a questionnaire was developed to study the agricultural practices of each region. In the second year of the project, this questionnaire was distributed and administered individually to producers, informants and producers of plant protection products. A list of biocontrol products, microorganisms and molecules already recognised or under development has also been established. In addition, (field) trials were carried out at the various partners and transferred to farmers in the cross-border region. These early tests showed promising results using biological fungicides and lipopeptides that were produced and formulated by partners in other SMARTBIOCONTROL portfolio projects. In the third year of the project, the questionnaire was completed and processed, a report will be made available to the general public in the last year. Several field trials, both in greenhouses and fields, have been carried out on both sides of the border. The positive results were disseminated to producers and stakeholders in the cross-border region. As the last (half) semester approaches, field trials are coming to an end and reports are being prepared. Several meetings were also organised as part of the final symposium in December 2020. The results of the different working methods will be presented and disseminated to project members, farmers and stakeholders.

BioProtect fait partie du portefeuille de projets SMARTBIOCONTROL, qui comprend 5 projets (BioScreen, BioProd, BioSens, BioProtect et BioComgest). L'interaction entre BioProtect et les 4 autres projets est le suivant: Bioscreen fournit aux partenaires de BioProtect des connaissances sur le mode d'action et mène également des recherches sur de nouvelles biomocècules pour la protection des cultures. Si des biomolécules intéressantes sont découvertes, elles seront testées dans des essais à petite échelle par les partenaires de BioProtect, entre autres. Les produits formulés (tels que les lipopeptides) sont fournis par BioProd pour des tests (à petite échelle, en serres ou en champs) au sein de BioProtect. À partir de Biosens, les partenaires de BioProtect reçoivent des biocapteurs pour détecter les produits de biocontrôle et les maladies aux champs. Sur la base des essais, BioProtect peut ensuite donner un feed-back aux autres partenaires/projets sur le fonctionnement de leurs produits/capteurs. Enfin, BioComgest est le projet de coordination et dirige le transfert d'information. Au cours des trois premières années du projet, les objectifs des différents modules de travail ont été traités concrètement et pratiquement. Des réunions régulières ont eu lieu des deux côtés de la frontière et ont permis d'établir un plan de travail pour les 4 prochaines années par l'intermédiaire de forte coopération transfrontalière. Des échanges multiples ont eu lieu entre les partenaires des autres projets afin de conforté le travail en synergie entre les projets et allier les compétences ainsi que les premiers résultats. Au cours de la première année du projet, diverses activités de communication ont été réalisées. Parmi celles-ci, un site web (www.smartbiocontrol.eu), des posters, des présentations, des articles, une conférence de presse, etc. Ensuite, un questionnaire a été élaboré pour étudier les pratiques agricoles de chaque région. Au cours de la deuxième année du projet, ce questionnaire a été distribué et administré individuellement auprès des producteurs, aux informateurs et aux producteurs de produits phytopharmaceutiques. Une liste de produits de biocontrôle, de micro-organismes et de molécules déjà reconnues ou en cours de développement a également été établie. De plus, des essaies (en champs) ont été effectués chez les différents partenaires et ont été transféré aux agriculteurs de la région transfrontalière. Ces premiers tests ont montré des résultats prometteurs en utilisant des fongicides biologiques et des lipopeptides qui ont été produits et formulés par les partenaires d'autres projets du portefeuille SMARTBIOCONTROL. Au cours de la troisième année du projet, le questionnaire a été complété et traité, un rapport sera mis à la disposition du grand public au cours de la dernière année. Plusieurs essais sur le terrain, tant en serre qu'au champs, ont été réalisés d’une part et d'autre de la frontière. Les résultats positifs ont été diffusés auprès des producteurs et des acteurs du secteur dans la région transfrontalière. À l'approche du dernier (demi) semestre, les essais aux champs arrivent à leur terme et les rapports sont en cours de préparation. Plusieurs réunions ont également été organisées dans le cadre du symposium final qui aura lieu en décembre 2020. Les résultats des différents modes de travail y seront présentés et diffusés aux membres du projet, aux agriculteurs et aux parties intéressées.
