La problématique de valorisation des essences locales, et particulièrement des essences feuillues, est partagée entre la France et la Belgique. Cependant, c’est la transformation résineuse qui a le plus réussi son industrialisation lors des 30 dernières années. Le secteur de la transformation de feuillus n’a, quant à lui, pas su amorcer ce tournant. Les clients traditionnels de ce secteur ainsi que les débouchés et usages de ces bois ont nettement diminué au profit de produits d’importation ou d’autres matériaux. Le secteur de la construction reste un moteur pour la filière bois dans son ensemble, comparé à la première transformation qui connait de réelles problématiques de développement de ses entreprises. Le projet vise donc, de manière générale, à créer des opportunités de marché et de débouchés pour les essences transrégionales. Pour cela, il convient d’accompagner les entreprises de transformation du bois sur leurs problématiques techniques par un appui à l’innovation, la recherche, le développement, l’appui à la réalisation d’essais de caractérisation de produits, la création de connexions ainsi qu’à une veille technique et normative. Le but ultime étant de créer des débouchés pour les essences régionales en transfrontalier, en agissant à plusieurs niveaux : le projet ProFilWood, grâce à son intégration dans un portefeuille de projets permettra de créer des débouchés économiques dans une cohérence de filière.

The problem of exploiting local species, and particularly hardwood species, is shared between France and Belgium. However, the processing of coniferous varieties has witnessed the most successful industrialisation over the last 30 years. The hardwood processing sector, on the other hand, has not been able to achieve this breakthrough. The traditional customers of this sector, as well as the opportunities and uses of these woods, have significantly decreased in favour of import products or other materials. The construction sector remains a driver for the wood sector as a whole, compared with primary processing, which is experiencing real problems in the development of its businesses. The project is therefore generally aimed at creating market opportunities and openings for trans-regional species. To do so, it is necessary to help wood processing companies tackle their technical issues by supporting innovation, research, development, support for the realisation of product characterisation tests, the creation of connections as well as a technical and normative watch. The ultimate goal is to create outlets for regional species in the cross-border region, acting on several levels: the ProFilWood project, through its integration into a portfolio of projects, will create economic opportunities with a high degree of sector coherence.

Zowel in Frankrijk als in België is de exploitatie van plaatselijke boomsoorten en in het bijzonder van hardhout een probleem. De verwerking van naaldbomen is de afgelopen 30 jaar met succes geïndustrialiseerd. De hardhoutverwerkende sector is er echter niet in geslaagd op dezelfde manier door te breken. Het aantal traditionele klanten van deze sector alsook de afzetmarkt en de toepassingen van dit soort hout zijn sterk gedaald ten voordele van ingevoerde producten of ander materiaal. De bouwsector blijft een drijfveer voor de houtsector in zijn geheel, vergeleken met de primaire verwerking, waar de ondernemingen reële problemen hebben om te groeien. Daarom beoogt het project de creatie van marktkansen en afzetkanalen voor transregionale boomsoorten. Hiervoor is het nodig de houtverwerkingsbedrijven te helpen hun technische problemen op te lossen door innovatie, onderzoek, ontwikkeling, de uitvoering van karakteriseringstesten van producten, de totstandkoming van connecties en de technische en normatieve monitoring te steunen. Het uiteindelijke doel is afzetkanalen te creëren voor regionale soorten in de grensstreek, waarbij op meerdere niveaus wordt gewerkt. Dankzij zijn integratie in een projectenportefeuille wil het project ProFilWood economische kansen met een hoge sectorale samenhang creëren.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet ProFilWood a été lancé le 1er octobre 2016. Depuis cette date de nombreuses actions ont été mises en place par les partenaires du projet. Afin de coordonner les actions du projet, les opérateurs se sont réunies 39 fois au cours des 7 premiers semestres du projet, tant en Wallonie, qu'en Hauts-de-France ou qu'en Grand Est. Un événement de lancement de l'ensemble du portefeuille de projets Feel Wood a été organisé en 2017. Durant cet événement, le projet ProFilWood a officiellement été présenté. Sur la partie communication, le site internet www.profilwood.eu a été mis en ligne en lien direct avec l'ensemble des sites internet du portefeuille de projets Feel Wood. Ainsi, l'ensemble des actualités saisies sur le site internet du projet ProFilWood sont remontées automatiquement vers le site commun du portefeuille de projet permettant d'informer des actualités et des événements à nos publics-cibles des différents versants. Les partenaires du projet ont aussi créé des flyers de présentation de ProFilWood et des roll-up permettant de communiquer sur le projet à l'occasion des différents événements que les partenaires ont organisé ou auxquels ils ont participé. Une revue périodique sur la filière bois transfrontalière a aussi été créée. Le premier numéro de ce magazine "I Wood Know" a été publié en novembre 2017 et le huitième en mars 2020. Un neuvième et dernier numéro est prévu pour une sortie en septembre 2020. Il aura pour objectif de faire la synthèse de l'ensemble des actions menées dans le cadre du portefeuille de projets Feel Wood. A la fin du 7ème semestre du projet, plus de 15000 numéros avaient en tout été imprimés, envoyés, distribués lors des événements. De plus, les versions électroniques de ces magazines sont aussi disponibles sur le site internet du projet. Ces revues permettent, tout au long du projet, d'informer les publics-cibles du projets des actualités de la filière bois transfrontalière. En début de projet, les partenaires ont aussi réalisé un état des lieux des entreprises de première et de seconde transformation du bois des différentes régions de la zone, permettant de connaître leurs produits, essences de bois utilisées, équipements… 193 entreprises de la zone ont été sollicitées dans ce cadre. L'analyse de ces questionnaires a permis la sortie d'un rapport d'étude sur la 1ère transformation. Malheureusement, les données obtenues sur les entreprises de seconde transformation n'ont pas permis de tirer des conclusions générales dans un rapport d'études spécifique. Afin de valoriser la filière forêt-bois et les essences de bois régionales, les opérateurs du projet ont organisé 3 journées de visites. La première le 18 mai 2017 et valorisant la filière construction bois en Wallonie, une autre sur le bois dans la construction publique le 8 novembre 2018 en Wallonie et une sur la filière peuplier le 7 juin 2019. Ces trois premières journées ont accueilli 126 professionnels belges et français de la filière forêt bois, leur permettant de découvrir les entreprises et savoir-faire de l'autre côté de la frontière mais aussi d'échanger entre eux. Un voyage d'études de 4 jours en région Grand Est est aussi prévu du 15 au 18 septembre 2020. Dans une optique de sensibilisation et de valorisation des réalisations régionales et transfrontalières utilisant des essences de bois locales, les partenaires du projet ont créé un appel à projet intitulé "I Wood Build". Deux appels à projets ont été lancés en novembre 2017 et en mars 2019 auprès des entreprises et architectes du territoire transfrontalier de façons à ce qu'ils proposent des réalisations dans trois catégories (bâtiments, aménagements intérieurs et aménagements extérieurs). Suite à ces deux appels à projets, 80 dossiers ont été reçus et analysés par un jury qui en a sélectionné 53 dont 9 désignés comme lauréats. Pour chacun de ces appels à projets, des remises de prix ont été organisées (à Namur en 2018 et à Lille en 2019) et des catalogues et expositions valorisant l'ensemble des projets sélectionnés ont été imprimés. Ces expositions ont été mises en place 18 fois avant le dernier semestre du projet, au sein d'administrations, écoles d'architectures, lycées techniques ou salons. Les personnes ayant découvert ces expositions ont donc pu constater tout ce qu'il était possible avec des essences de bois régionales, tant en France qu'en Belgique. Le projet ProFilWood ayant aussi pour objectif d'accompagner les entreprises de la filière bois vers l'innovation dans l'utilisation des essences de bois régionales, les opérateurs ont créé l'appel à projets "I Wood Innovate" visant à accompagner techniquement et financièrement les projets sélectionnés. Suite à deux appels à projets, 18 projets ont été sélectionnés et au final 16 d'entre eux ont pu être accompagnés (12 en Wallonie et 4 en Hauts-de-France). En parallèle, un appel à candidatures "I Wood Create", visant à associer des entreprises de la filière forêt-bois et des designers professionnels pour assurer le développement ou l’amélioration de produits à base de bois local, a été lancé en avril 2018. Deux entreprises sont entrées dans la démarche de cette activité et au final l'une d'entre elles a pu développer un prototype de produit design utilisant du bois local. Enfin, 5 projets de recherche ont été initié dans le cadre du projet ProFilWood. Ces projets de recherche intéressent l’ensemble de la filière bois transfrontalière et portent sur différents thèmes tels que la caractérisation de châssis en hêtre thermotraité, l’intégration du bois et des entreprises locales dans les marchés publics, le développement d’une méthode alternative au créosotage, l’analyse du cycle de vie des poutres en lamellé-collé, ou encore la création d’un indicateur socio-économique et environnemental de la filière-forêt bois. L'ensemble des rapports de recherche sont disponibles sur le site du projet. Un événement de clôture commun avec le projet FormaWood a été prévu au cours du 7ème semestre et sera organisé en septembre 2020 de façon à présenter l'ensemble des actions et résultats du projet.

Achievements (EN):

The ProFilWood project was launched on 1 October 2016. Since then, many actions have been implemented by the project partners. In order to coordinate the project’s actions, the operators met 39 times during the first 7 semesters of the project, both in Wallonia, Hauts-de-France and Grand Est. A launch event for the entire portfolio of Feel Wood projects was organised in 2017. During this event, the ProFilWood project was officially presented. On the communication part, the website www.profilwood.eu was directly linked to all the websites of the Feel Wood project portfolio. Thus, all the news entered on the website of the ProFilWood project are automatically returned to the common website of the project portfolio to inform news and events to our target audiences on the different sides. The project partners also created ProFilWood presentation flyers and roll-ups to communicate about the project at the various events that the partners organised or participated in. A periodic review on the cross-border timber sector has also been established. The first issue of this magazine “I Wood Know” was published in November 2017 and the eighth in March 2020. A ninth and final issue is scheduled for a release in September 2020. Its objective will be to synthesise all the actions carried out within the framework of the Feel Wood project portfolio. By the end of the 7th semester of the project, more than 15,000 issues had been printed, sent, distributed during the events. In addition, electronic versions of these magazines are also available on the project’s website. These journals make it possible, throughout the project, to inform the target audiences of the project about the news of the cross-border timber sector. At the beginning of the project, the partners also carried out an inventory of the first and second wood processing companies in the different regions of the area, making it possible to know their products, wood species used, equipment... 193 companies in the area were requested in this context. The analysis of these questionnaires led to the release of a study report on the first transformation. Unfortunately, the data obtained on second-processing companies did not make it possible to draw general conclusions in a specific study report. In order to enhance the forest-wood sector and regional wood species, the project operators organised 3 days of visits. The first one on 18 May 2017 and promoting the wood construction sector in Wallonia, another on wood in public construction on 8 November 2018 in Wallonia and one on the poplar sector on 7 June 2019. These first three days welcomed 126 Belgian and French professionals from the forest sector, allowing them to discover companies and know-how on the other side of the border but also to exchange with each other. A 4-day study trip to the Grand Est region is also scheduled for September 15-18, 2020. With a view to raising awareness and enhancing regional and cross-border achievements using local wood species, the project partners created a call for projects called “I Wood Build”. Two calls for projects were launched in November 2017 and March 2019 to companies and architects in the cross-border territory in ways to propose realisations in three categories (buildings, interior fittings and outdoor fittings). Following these two calls for projects, 80 applications were received and analysed by a jury which selected 53 of them, 9 of which were nominated as laureates. For each of these calls for projects, awards were organised (in Namur in 2018 and Lille in 2019) and catalogues and exhibitions highlighting all the selected projects were printed. These exhibitions were set up 18 times before the last semester of the project, in administrations, architecture schools, technical high schools or trade fairs. The people who discovered these exhibitions were thus able to see everything that was possible with regional wood species, both in France and in Belgium. As the ProFilWood project also aims to support companies in the wood sector towards innovation in the use of regional wood species, the operators have created the call for projects “I Wood Innovate” aimed at supporting technically and financially the selected projects. Following two calls for projects, 18 projects were selected and in the end 16 were supported (12 in Wallonia and 4 in Hauts-de-France). In parallel, a call for applications “I Wood Create”, aimed at involving companies in the forest-wood sector and professional designers to ensure the development or improvement of local wood products, was launched in April 2018. Two companies entered the process of this activity and in the end one of them was able to develop a prototype design product using local wood. Finally, 5 research projects were initiated as part of the ProFilWood project. These research projects are of interest to the entire cross-border timber sector and cover various topics such as the characterisation of thermotreated beech frames, the integration of wood and local enterprises into public procurement, the development of an alternative method to creosotage, the analysis of the life cycle of laminated and glued beams, and the creation of a socio-economic and environmental indicator of the forest sector. All research reports are available on the project website. A joint closing event with the FormaWood project was planned for the 7th semester and will be organised in September 2020 to present all the actions and results of the project.

Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien : 500. 20 entreprises seront accompagnées chaque année sur une période de 4 ans, et 100 entreprises participeront à des séances d’informations collectives. Nombre d’actions d’accompagnement en transfrontalier favorisant la mobilité et l'emploi des publics cibles : 4. 4 journées de rencontres professionnelles ont été prévues sur toute la durée du projet. L’objectif de 5 projets de recherche financés a été évalué au regard des possibilités offertes par l’action d’accompagnement technique et financier à la caractérisation de matériaux issus d’essences régionales.
