The SMARTBIOCONTROL project portfolio brings together a wide range of expertise from the cross-border region to develop new high-performance biological products to fight against crop diseases. It is based on a pilot project and four distinct but highly interconnected constitutive projects to select new bio-based ingredients (BIOSCREEN), develop their production on an industrial scale (BIOPROD), evaluate their effectiveness under agronomic conditions (BIOPROTECT) and ensure their follow-up in the fields (BIOSENS). SMARTBIOCONTROL is based on an innovative approach to better equip Belgian and French farmers in the region with such products, to meet the requirements of integrated disease management that minimises the use of chemical pesticides. It assembles the skills of 26 partners from around twenty different structural entities (research centres, universities, non-profit organisations, society, regional federations, farmers' associations) distributed fairly on both sides of the border. The management of such a consortium requires optimal coordination of the scientific work, its communication and promotion, by the pilot project. This coordination is organised around a management committee, a portfolio council, an operational committee and a specific promotion committee.

Le portefeuille de projets SMARTBIOCONTROL réunit un large panel d’expertises de la zone transfrontalière pour développer de nouveaux produits biologiques performants afin de lutter contre les maladies des cultures. Il s’articule sur un projet pilote et quatre projets constitutifs bien distincts mais fortement interconnectés pour sélectionner de nouveaux ingrédients biosourcés (BIOSCREEN), développer leur production à l’échelle industrielle (BIOPROD), évaluer leur efficacité en conditions agronomiques (BIOPROTECT) et assurer leur suivi aux champs (BIOSENS). SMARTBIOCONTROL se base sur une approche innovante visant à mieux armer les agriculteurs belges et français de la zone disposant de tels produits, pour répondre aux exigences d’une gestion intégrée des maladies qui minimise l’usage des pesticides chimiques. Il fédère les compétences de 26 partenaires issus d’une petite vingtaine d’entités structurelles différentes (centres de recherches, universités, ASBL, société, fédérations régionales, associations d’agriculteurs) réparties de manière équitable de part et d’autre de la frontière. La gestion d’un tel consortium requiert de la part du projet pilote une coordination optimale des travaux scientifiques, de leur communication et de leur valorisation. Cette coordination s’articule autour d’un comité de direction, d’un conseil de portefeuille, d’un comité opérationnel et d’un comité spécifique de la valorisation.

De projectenportefeuille SMARTBIOCONTROL verenigt een brede waaier van expertise uit de grensstreek om nieuwe, hoogpresterende biologische producten te ontwikkelen om gewasziekten te bestrijden. Hij is gebaseerd op een pilootproject en vier afzonderlijke maar onderling nauw verbonden constitutieve projecten om nieuwe, biogebaseerde ingrediënten te selecteren (BIOSCREEN), hun productie op industriële schaal te ontwikkelen (BIOPROD), hun doeltreffendheid in agronomische omstandigheden te evalueren (BIOPROTECT) en hun follow-up op het veld te verzekeren (BIOSENS). SMARTBIOCONTROL steunt op een innovatieve aanpak om de Belgische en Franse landbouwers in de regio beter uit te rusten met dergelijke producten, in antwoord op de vereisten van een geïntegreerd ziektebeheer dat het gebruik van chemische pesticiden tot een minimum beperkt. Het verzamelt de vaardigheden van 26 partners van een twintigtal verschillende structurele entiteiten (onderzoekscentra, universiteiten, non-profitorganisaties, het middenveld, regionale federaties, landbouwersverenigingen), gelijk verdeeld over beide zijden van de grens. Het beheer van een dergelijk consortium vereist de optimale coördinatie van het wetenschappelijke werk, zijn communicatie en promotie door het pilootproject. Deze coördinatie wordt georganiseerd door een beheercomité, een portefeuilleraad, een operationeel comité en een specifiek promotiecomité.

Achievements (EN):

The purpose of the BIOCOMGEST project was to ensure the coordination and communication of the SMARTBIOCONTROL project portfolio dedicated to the research and development of new biopesticides and made up of BIOSCREEN, BIOPROD, BIOPROTECT and BIOSENS projects. This portfolio has federated the skills of more than 100 people in 22 partner entities in the Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Flanders and Wallonia regions. The coordination of the portfolio has been ensured through two simple and effective structures: a steering committee made up of the leaders of each project and a communication manager who met every 2 to 3 months and a portfolio board bringing together all the partners and organised every 6 months from the 3 rd semester. The presence of a BIOCOMGEST coordinator at each meeting of the various constituent projects also ensured that uniform and common research protocols, objectives and strategy were in place throughout the portfolio. For the internal communication of the portfolio, BIOCOMGEST has developed three tools: a centralisation platform dedicated to the exchange of documents (intranet) between partners, online seminars (33 webinars were offered to partners) and a one-day SMARTBIOCONTROL symposium organised, starting in the third semester, every 6 months (i.e. 6 symposia in total). For external communication, a joint website (www.smartbiocontol.eu) consulted 12169 times gathered information on the topic and partners of the different projects but also numerous resources for the different audiences of the portfolio such as: a database of recent scientific work on biocontrol agents, a database on biocontrol products used in Belgium and France, data sheets on these products, a set of educational resources on the selection, production and study of the effectiveness of biopesticides, a set of videos and podcasts containing the main results obtained by the project portfolio. ). The results were presented in 229 listed communication actions (138 for BIOSCREEN, 33 for BIOPROD, 30 for BIOPROTECT and 28 for BIOSENS), including 62 publications in scientific journals (25 for BIOSCREEN, 13 for BIOPROD, 20 for BIOPROTECT and 4 for BIOSENS), and at numerous national or international conferences (98 for BIOSCREEN, 20 for BIOPROD, 8 for BIOPROTECT and 26 for BIOSENS), and at a closing video conference organised on 10 December 2020 with 547 people registered. Two derivatives were also distributed to promote the portfolio: about 100 vine plants grown in vitro and 350 bags of vegetable seeds bearing the logo of SMARTBIOCONTROL. Following the three press conferences held at the beginning (one in France and one in Flanders) and at the end of the project (via videoconference) involving 26 journalists (12 from France, 8 from Wallonia and 6 from Flanders), the project was the subject of 29 press articles and 4 TV or radio reports. Two companies in the cross-border region (two in Wallonia) have already benefited from the support of the SMARTBIOCONTROL project. Another French company participated as a partner in the project. During the closing session most of the major international companies active in the pesticide and biopesticide market were present (AGRAUXINE (LESAFFRE), BASF, BAYER, Belchim, BIOVITIS, CERTIS, Corteva, COVERTIS, DE SANGOSSE, EASTMAN, ELEPHANT VERT, GLOBACHEM, GOWAN, KOPPERT, LALLEMAND, SBM COMPANY, SYNGENTA...), which demonstrates the great interest of the sector for the results of the portfolio. Finally, BIOCOMGEST has continuously ensured uniformity and the exchange of skills between the different projects that make up the portfolio. With this in mind, BIOCOMGEST took charge of the management and centralisation of the translation of reports. In the fifth and sixth semesters, BIOCOMGEST initiated a reflection on the selection of a limited number of biopesticides developed in BIOSCREEN that would be studied comparatively in the BIOSCREEN, BIOPROD and BIOPROTECT projects.

Le projet BIOCOMGEST avait pour vocation d’assurer la coordination et la communication du portefeuille de projets SMARTBIOCONTROL dédié à la recherche et au développement de nouveaux biopesticides et constitué des projets BIOSCREEN, BIOPROD, BIOPROTECT et BIOSENS. Ce portefeuille a fédéré les compétences de plus d’une centaine de personnes réparties dans 22 entités partenaires dans les Régions Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, en Flandres et en Wallonie. La coordination du portefeuille a été assurée au travers de deux structures simples et efficaces: un comité de direction constitué des chefs de file de chaque projet et d’une responsable de la communication qui s’est réuni tous les 2 à 3 mois et un conseil de portefeuille rassemblant tous les partenaires et organisé tous les 6 mois à partir du 3ème semestre. La présence d'un coordinateur de BIOCOMGEST à chaque réunion des différents projets constitutifs a également permis de s'assurer de la mise en place de protocoles, d'objectifs et de stratégie de recherche uniforme et communs à l'ensemble du portefeuille. Pour la communication interne du portefeuille, BIOCOMGEST a développé trois outils: une plateforme de centralisation dédiée à l'échange de documents (intranet) entre partenaires, des séminaires en ligne (33 webinaires ont ainsi été proposés aux partenaires) et un symposium SMARTBIOCONTROL d’une journée organisé, à partir du troisième semestre, tous les 6 mois (soit 6 symposia au total). Pour la communication externe, un site web commun (www.smartbiocontol.eu) consulté 12169 fois a rassemblé des informations concernant la thématique et les partenaires des différents projets mais également de nombreuses ressources pour les différents publics du portefeuille telles que : une banque de données des travaux scientifiques récents sur les agents de biocontrôle, une banque de données sur les produits de biocontrôle utilisés en Belgique et en France, des fiches techniques sur ces produits, un ensemble de ressources pédagogiques sur la sélection, la production et l’étude de l’efficacité des biopesticides, un ensemble de vidéos et de podcast reprenant les principaux résultats obtenus par le portefeuille de projets. ). Les résultats ont été présentés dans 229 actions de communication répertoriées (138 pour BIOSCREEN, 33 pour BIOPROD, 30 pour BIOPROTECT et 28 pour BIOSENS), dont 62 publications dans des revues scientifiques (25 pour BIOSCREEN, 13 pour BIOPROD, 20 pour BIOPROTECT et 4 pour BIOSENS), et lors de nombreuses conférences nationales ou internationales (98 pour BIOSCREEN, 20 pour BIOPROD, 8 pour BIOPROTECT et 26 pour BIOSENS),et lors d’une vidéoconférence de clôture organisée le 10 décembre 2020 à laquelle 547 personnes se sont inscrites. Deux produits dérivés ont également été distribués pour faire la promotion du portefeuille : une centaine de plants de vigne cultivés in vitro et 350 sachets de semences de légumes portant le logo de SMARTBIOCONTROL. Suite aux trois conférences de presse organisées en début (une en France et une en Flandres) et en fin de projet (par visioconférence) auxquels ont participé 26 journalistes (12 de France, 8 de Wallonie et 6 de Flandre), le projet a fait l’objet de 29 articles de presse et 4 reportages TV ou radio. Deux entreprises de la Région transfrontalière (deux en Wallonie) ont déjà bénéficié de l’aide du projet SMARTBIOCONTROL. Une autre entreprise française a participé comme partenaire au projet. Lors de la séance de clôture la plupart des grandes entreprises internationales actives sur le marché des pesticides et biopesticides étaient présentes (AGRAUXINE (LESAFFRE), BASF, BAYER, BELCHIM, BIOVITIS, CERTIS, CORTEVA, COVERTIS, DE SANGOSSE, EASTMAN, ELEPHANT VERT, GLOBACHEM, GOWAN, KOPPERT, LALLEMAND, SBM COMPANY, SYNGENTA…), ce qui démontre le grand intérêt du secteur pour les résultats du portefeuille. Enfin, BIOCOMGEST a continuellement veillé à l'uniformité et l'échange de compétences entre les différents projets qui constituent le portefeuille. Dans cet esprit, BIOCOMGEST a pris en charge la gestion et la centralisation de la traduction des rapports. Au cours des cinquième et sixième semestres, BIOCOMGEST a initié une réflexion pour la sélection d'un nombre restreint de biopesticides élaborés dans BIOSCREEN qui seraient étudiés de façon comparative dans les projets BIOSCREEN, BIOPROD et BIOPROTECT.
