Uit een studie van de WGO van 25 maart 2014 blijkt dat in 2012 wereldwijd 7 miljoen mensen vroegtijdig overleden (1 op de 8 overlijdens) als gevolg van de verontreiniging van de binnen- en buitenlucht. Deze vorm van verontreiniging is duidelijk het grootste milieu-gezondheidsrisico ter wereld geworden. Vluchtige organische stoffen (VOS) spelen in deze vervuiling een belangrijke rol. De verwerkende industrie is verantwoordelijk voor meer dan een derde van de VOS-emissies. Deze industriële emissies hebben niet alleen een impact ter plaatse, maar ook verder weg. Hun beperking is dan ook een grote, grensoverschrijdende bekommernis. De interregionale expertise die uit dit project voortkomt, moet de antropogene VOS-emissies van een industriële sector (gebruik van verf en lak op metalen) verminderen. De ontwikkelde expertise kan worden uitgebreid naar andere VOS-uitstotende activiteiten en zelfs naar de uitstoot in de binnenlucht . De markt kent verschillende technieken voor de vermindering van VOS, maar ze zijn niet doeltreffend. Het is essentieel dat men alternatieve technologieën voor de controle van deze emissies invoert, door efficiëntie en economie te combineren om de emissienormen te halen. Dit project wil grensoverschrijdende ondernemingen met een milieuvriendelijke, duurzame aanpak steunen en hen aangepaste, innovatieve oplossingen voor de verwerking van VOS aanreiken.

Une étude de l'OMS du 25 mars 2014 indique que 7 millions de personnes sont décédées prématurément en 2012 dans le monde (1 mort sur 8), décès attribuables aux effets de la pollution de l'air extérieur et intérieur. Cette pollution est clairement devenue le principal risque environnemental de santé dans le monde. Les Composés Organiques Volatils (COV) prennent une part importante dans cette pollution. L'industrie manufacturière est responsable de plus du tiers des émissions de COV. Ces émissions industrielles n'ont pas uniquement un impact local mais aussi un impact à plus longue distance. Leur réduction est donc une préoccupation majeure et transfrontalière. Les compétences inter-régionales associées dans le présent projet visent à réduire les émissions anthropiques de COV d'un secteur industriel (utilisation de peintures/laques sur métaux). La compétence développée pourra cependant s'étendre à d'autres activités émettrices de COV, voire aux émissions dans l'air intérieur. Différentes techniques d'abattement des COV existent sur le marché mais elles sont peu efficientes. L'introduction de technologies alternatives pour le contrôle de ces émissions alliant efficacité et économie pour satisfaire les normes de rejets est primordiale. Ce projet compte alors accompagner les entreprises transfrontalières dans une démarche environnementale et durable pour leur proposer des solutions adaptées et innovantes pour le traitement des COV.

A WHO study dating from 25 March 2014 indicates that 7 million people died prematurely in 2012 worldwide (1 in 8 deaths), their deaths attributable to the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution. This pollution has clearly become the principal environmental health risk in the world. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) play an important role in this pollution. The manufacturing industry is responsible for more than a third of VOC emissions. These industrial emissions not only have a local impact but also an impact further away. Reducing them is therefore a major cross-border concern. The inter-regional expertise associated with this project is aimed at reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions from an industrial sector (use of paints/lacquers on metals). However, the expertise developed may be extended to other VOC-emitting activities, or even to indoor air emissions. Different VOC reduction techniques exist on the market, but they are inefficient. It is essential to introduce alternative technologies for the control of these emissions combining efficiency and economy to meet the emission standards. This project intends to support cross-border companies with an environmental and sustainable approach to offer them adapted and innovative solutions for the treatment of VOCs.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet DepollutAir devait développer de nouvelles solutions innovantes pour le traitement des Composés Organiques Volatils (COV), notamment par le couplage de méthodes, puis d'accompagner les industries transfrontalières concernées, dans une démarche environnementale et durable. Des visites sur site ont eu lieu chez les deux partenaires industriels associés du projet, TIM et Volvo Cars puis chez Ryssen Alcools. Une campagne de mesures chez Volvo Cars ainsi que chez Ryssen Alcools ont été effectuées afin d’avoir des données pour tester nos procédés dans des conditions proches de la réalité industrielle. A partir de ces données, différents matériaux (adsorbants, catalyseurs, photocatalyseurs) ont été sélectionnés et synthétisés par les différents partenaires pour avoir une base de matériaux utilisés pour les procédés de traitement. En particulier, une zéolithe hiérarchisée par l’UNamur a été testée par l’UMONS pour ses capacités d’adsorption. Elle a été également modifiée à l’ULille et l’ULCO et testée en catalyse d’oxydation des COV. Des tests en plasma et catalyse et couplage ont été effectués également par des étudiants en cotutelle sur les sites de l’ULille et l’UGand. Mais d’autres échanges d’étudiants ont eu lieu entre l’UMons et l’ULCO (couplage adsorption et catalyse), l’ULCO et l’UNamur (synthèse des matériaux). De plus, certains matériaux de l’UNamur ont été testés en partenariat avec le projet TEXACOV (GoToS3) pour les propriétés photocatalytiques. Nos procédés utilisant le couplage ont montré de très bons potentiels de traitement des COV selon les émissions (débits/concentrations) et pourraient passer à l’échelle pilote industriel. La validation toxicologique a été faite sur le procédé adsorption-catalyse. Pour cela, il a été développé une méthodologie de caractérisation de la toxicité de mélanges gazeux tels que ceux rencontrés directement en industrie ou après dépollution d’un procédé. De nombreux articles scientifiques ont été publiés dans des revues de renommées internationales et des présentations tant sous forme d'affiches qu'orales ont été présentées partout dans le monde. Plusieurs soutenances de thèse chez les différents partenaires ont permis de présenter publiquement des travaux issus du projet. Une nouvelle revue internationale : « Chemical synthesis » a été créée où Bao-Lian Su (UNamur) est éditeur en chef et Stéphane Siffert (ULCO) est éditeur pour la chimie environnementale. Une revue générale sur nos travaux communs a été publiée dans ce journal. Le projet DepollutAir faisait partie du portefeuille GoToS3 avec 16 autres projets constitutifs. Il nous a permis de rencontrer les chefs de files de tous ces projets (COMAC, Comité des chefs de file) et de faire émerger des synergies, comme celle qui est née ave le projet TEXACOV. GoToS3 nous a aussi acculturé aux IRL (Innovation Readiness Level) et à l’innovation transsectorielle, à travers notamment une expérience de Design Fiction. Ce dynamique portefeuille GoToS3 a hébergé notre site internet et participé à notre stratégie de communication (site internet, réseaux sociaux, newsletter). Quatre workshops ont été organisés dont certains en partenariat avec les projets TEXACOV et Et’Air en présence d’industriels confrontés au problème d’émission de COV. A cause de la crise sanitaire, un workshop a été remplacé par une table ronde en distanciel ainsi que des vidéos des différents partenaires. Pour présenter ces travaux, une chaîne YouTube a été ouverte: « VOC-Prevention-Remediation-Interreg » (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBtRU7N17YElL9t-UQMSuUw). Le nombre d’actions de sensibilisation à l’environnement a donc été en accord avec les objectifs, à noter également : des articles parus dans des magazines (Athena, La Libre Belgique, Empreinte), une interview radio (RTBF) et des conférences grand public.

Achievements (EN):

The DepollutAir project was to develop new innovative solutions for the treatment of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), in particular through the coupling of methods, and then to support the cross-border industries concerned, in an environmental and sustainable approach. On-site visits were made to the project’s two associated industrial partners, TIM and Volvo Cars and then to Ryssen Alcools. A measurement campaign at Volvo Cars and Ryssen Alcools was carried out in order to have data to test our processes in conditions close to industrial reality. From these data, different materials (adsorbents, catalysts, photocatalysts) were selected and synthesised by the different partners to have a base of materials used for processing processes. In particular, a zeolith prioritised by UNamur has been tested by UMONS for its adsorption capabilities. It was also modified in ULille and ULCO and tested in VOC oxidation catalysis. Plasma and catalysis and coupling tests were also performed by cotutel students at the ULille and Ugand sites. But other student exchanges took place between UMons and ULCO (adsorption and catalysis coupling), ULCO and UNamur (material synthesis). In addition, some UNamur materials have been tested in partnership with the TEXACOV project (GoToS3) for photocatalytic properties. Our coupling processes have shown very good VOC treatment potentials based on emissions (flows/concentrations) and could move to the industrial pilot scale. Toxicological validation was done on the adsorption-catalysis process. For this purpose, a methodology for characterising the toxicity of gaseous mixtures such as those encountered directly in industry or after depollution of a process has been developed. Numerous scientific articles have been published in internationally renowned journals and presentations in both poster and oral form have been presented around the world. Several thesis defenses in the various partners allowed to publicly present work from the project. A new international journal: “Hemical synthesis” was created where Bao-Lian Su (UNamur) is chief editor and Stéphane Siffert (ULCO) is editor for environmental chemistry. A general review of our joint work was published in this journal. The DepollutAir project was part of the GoToS3 portfolio with 16 other constitutive projects. It allowed us to meet the leaders of all these projects (COMAC, Committee of Leaders) and to bring out synergies, such as the one that was born with the TEXACOV project. GoToS3 has also gained us with IRL (Innovation Readiness Level) and cross-sector innovation, notably through an experience of Design Fiction. This dynamic GoToS3 portfolio hosted our website and participated in our communication strategy (website, social networks, newsletter). Four workshops were organised, some in partnership with the TEXACOV and Et’Air projects in the presence of industrialists facing the problem of VOC emissions. Due to the health crisis, a workshop was replaced by a distancing round table and videos of the various partners. To present this work, a YouTube channel was opened: “VOC-Prevention-Remediation-Interreg” (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBtRU7N17YElL9t-UQMSuUw). The number of environmental awareness-raising activities has therefore been in line with the objectives, which should also be noted: articles published in magazines (Athena, La Libre Belgique, Empreinte), a radio interview (RTBF) and general public conferences.

Expected Results (NL): Aantal grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingen die ook na afloop van het project nog actief zijn: 12. Bij dit project zijn negen grensoverschrijdende onderzoeksteams betrokken, die ook na afloop van het project zullen blijven samenwerken. Er zouden ook nieuwe samenwerkingen tot stand moeten komen.

Aantal ondernemingen die steun ontvangen: 12. Twee Franse en Belgische ondernemingen zijn geassocieerde partners in het project en zullen daarom prioritaire steun krijgen van bij de start van het project. Het zal gaan om een omvangrijke steun met een analyse op het terrein, gevolgd door gepersonaliseerd advies, om de onderneming te helpen de meest geschikte techniek te vinden. Er zal ook gepersonaliseerde steun worden verleend aan een achttal grensoverschrijdende ondernemingen. Aantal ondernemingen die deelnemen aan grensoverschrijdend onderzoek: 4. Twee grensoverschrijdende ondernemingen zijn betrokken als geassocieerde partners in onderzoek voor de ontwikkeling van innovatieve technieken voor de controle van VOS-vervuiling. Andere ondernemingen die door het project worden gesteund, kunnen ook actief aan het onderzoeksproject deelnemen. Aantal onderzoeksinstellingen die deelnemen aan grensoverschrijdende onderzoek: 6.

Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien : 12. Deux entreprises françaises et belges sont partenaires associés dans le projet et seront donc soutenues en priorité dès le démarrage du projet. Ce soutien sera important avec une campagne d’analyse sur site puis un accompagnement individualisé pour guider l’entreprise vers la technique la plus adaptée. Un accompagnement personnalisé d’environ 8 entreprises transfrontalières aura également lieu. Nombre d’entreprises participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 4. Deux entreprises transfrontalières sont impliquées en tant que partenaires associés dans la recherche pour la mise au point de techniques innovantes de dépollution des COV. D’autres entreprises qui seront soutenues par le projet pourront également participer activement au projet de recherche.
