Description
Description (NL): Tegenwoordig moet men besloten ruimten steeds efficiënter isoleren om energieverliezen te voorkomen.

This can result in a lack of ventilation that can lead to an increase in the concentration of pollutants in the indoor air, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which are harmful to human health. Different approaches have been proposed to reduce this problem: ventilation, filtration, pollution-removing plants, etc. However, the development of efficient methods enabling the on-site degradation of pollutants seems much more advantageous in the long term. The TEXACOV project is part of this process and consists of developing materials that allow the degradation, ideally into H2O and CO2, by the photo-catalytic effect of VOCs on the indoor air that uses visible light and without any additional external energy input. To achieve this objective, the synthesis of doped TiO2 nanoparticles will be carried out, and then these will be integrated into cellulose nanocrystals manufactured elsewhere. Finally, the prepared nano-composite will be assembled on the textile support by a well-adapted method. To carry out this project and to achieve these objectives, different expertise and technical skills are required. The strength of the consortium established is that it combines 3 cross-border partners with distinct but very complementary scientific and technical skills.

Read more Achievements (EN): The TEXACOV project aims to develop a depolluting textile that can degrade the products contaminating your parts of life. The proposed approach is to activate the textile by incorporating materials that can degrade, by photocatalytic effect, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, present in indoor air. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the material that has been most widely used for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Nevertheless, it is only effective under ultraviolet (UV) light, which limits its application possibilities. In order to develop a product that can also operate simply in visible light, and thus even indoors under artificial lighting, we propose in this project to modify this TiO2. The development strategy has followed in parallel several axes, the nesting of which, made possible by dynamic cross-border collaboration, must enable an efficient product to be obtained: —development of photoactive particles in the visible (Materia Nova) -development of a particle fixation intermediate on textiles and formulation of textile impregnation solutions (Kulak) — development of the textile functionalisation process (HEI-Junia) and surface pretreatment of fabrics (Materia Nova) — testing of the effectiveness of particles alone (Materia Nova) and modified textiles in representative environment (Junia) -assessment of the environmental performance of systems developed by life cycle analysis (Materia Nova and HEI-Junia) a bibliographical study carried out jointly by the three operators of the project (Materia Nova, HEI-Junia and Kulak) made it possible to select promising materials in terms of photocatalytic activity in the visible, obtained by doping TiO2 particles with different chemical elements such as palladium, silver and nitrogen. Materia Nova researchers undertook to obtain such particles through several separate experimental pathways, either in liquid phase (sol-gel or hydrothermal processes) or in the gas phase (physical deposit by PVD or ion implantation). The photocatalytic activity of synthesised nanoparticles was evaluated by methylene blue degradation tests in solution, under UV and visible irradiation. At the same time, operator Kulak developed the extraction of nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) by acid hydrolysis of cotton fibres and the preparation of aqueous dispersions of CNC and TiO2 particles (doped or not, provided by Materia Nova) that can be used for textile impregnation by scarfing by HEI-Junia. Finally, tests on the functionalisation of textiles (cotton, polyester...) by the formulations developed by the three operators were carried out by HEI-Junia textile researchers. Pre-treatment processes of textiles before scarring, by surface modification using plasmas, have in some cases been applied by Materia Nova or chemically by HEI-Junia. In addition, a test bench for the qualification of the depolluting performance of materials has been developed at the operator HEI-Junia. This device allows the quantification of the photocatalytic activity of the samples induced by a lighting system (UV and/or visible) thanks to the real-time monitoring of concentrations of gaseous pollutants (toluene). Tests were carried out on functionalised textile samples prepared with the assistance of all operators. In addition, in order to validate the environmental relevance of these depolluting textiles and quantify their supposed benefits, a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) study was conducted throughout the project. Led by Materia Nova and conducted in collaboration with HEI-Junia, this ACV study verified that the expected human health benefits for this project would not be offset by adverse environmental effects (also on health, but also in terms of for example climate change or consumption of non-renewable resources) induced by the implementation of the solution (the issue of the risk of release of TiO2 nanoparticles was considered). The work of modelling and calculating environmental impacts, carried out with the help of the scientific teams of the three operators, also made it possible to identify ecodesign pathways, in particular by favouring certain doping elements over others. The research and results of the TEXACOV project have given rise to scientific communications in numerous congresses, seminars, or scientific days (avniR 2018, Atmos'Fair 2018, SPSAS on Colloids, AutoOrg, ACIT 2019, AUTEX 2018 and 2019, LCIC 2020...), thus contributing to giving good visibility to the Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlaanderen cooperation programme. During the majority of these meetings, at least two operators are associated to present the project by posters or by oral communication. Synergies with other projects could be put in place, facilitating the exchange of information, scientific and technical skills, and the organisation of joint events (Workshops VOC 2017, 2018 and 2019). These include the GoToS3 portfolio projects (DepollutAir, Luminoptex, Duratex and Biocompal) and the Interreg ET’Air project. Reciprocal visits took place with the University of Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse to exchange our know-how in the hope of developing together a fruitful collaboration in themes related to the TEXACOV project. On the other hand, we had contacts with several companies interested in the topic of the project. In addition to CONCORDIA, DECATHLON and LENZING with whom we have had regular exchanges for some time and who have provided us with samples of their textile, we also met the French companies LR-VISION and Viosne-CHIMIE active in the development of photocatalytic materials based on ZnO. Other companies have also been sensitised, including: Octopus-Lab (Lille), IMCD France SAS (Saint-Denis), Bonduelle (Lille), Manetco (Brussels), Air-Label (Brussels), Airwatec (Verviers) and Desotec (Roulers). A website (http://www.texacov.eu) serving as a project management and communication tool has been put online in both languages (Fr/Nl).
