L’utilisation des matières premières renouvelables se généralise en plasturgie, en particulier dans l’emballage et le textile. Les dernières tendances montrent clairement que, sous la pression législative visant à réduire l’émission des gaz à effet de serre, les utilisateurs de matières plastiques développent ainsi de nouveaux matériaux biosourcés avec des propriétés très performantes. Cependant, le développement de tels biopolymères reste en retrait en Europe, notamment dans la zone transfrontalière. Ce projet de recherche s’inscrit dans le développement économique régional par l’innovation technologique, dans le but de développer des bioplastiques à hautes performances et compétitifs, via des méthodes de production soutenable tant d’un point de vue économique qu’environnemental. Un autre défi crucial est d’éviter, par l’exploitation de ressources renouvelables d’origine végétale, d’entrer en compétition avec l’alimentaire. Le projet ALPO vise alors à développer spécifiquement de nouvelles briques de construction (monomères, additifs fonctionnels etc.) et des bioplastiques correspondants, en utilisant des microalgues, matière première renouvelable et non-alimentaire, au travers d’un partenariat interdisciplinaire académique et institutionnel. Les nouveaux grades en bioplastiques, polyesters et revêtements multifonctionnels, pourront trouver des perspectives de développement fortes dans des secteurs d’activités industrielles présents dans la zone transfrontalière.

The use of renewable raw materials is becoming widespread in plastics, especially in packaging and textiles. The latest trends clearly show that under the legislative pressure to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, plastics users are developing new bio-based materials with high-performance properties. However, the development of such biopolymers is still lagging behind in Europe, especially in the cross-border region. This research project contributes to regional economic development through technological innovation, with the goal of developing high performance and competitive bio-plastics, through sustainable production methods from both an economic and environmental point of view. Another crucial challenge is to avoid entering into competition with the food industry, through the use of renewable resources of vegetable origin. The ALPO project aims to specifically develop new building bricks (monomers, functional additives, etc.) and corresponding bio-plastics, using micro-algae, a renewable and non-food raw material, through an interdisciplinary academic and institutional partnership. The new grades of bio-plastics, polyesters and multifunctional coatings could find strong development prospects in sectors of industrial activity present in the cross-border region.

Het gebruik van hernieuwbare grondstoffen raakt meer en meer ingeburgerd in de kunststoffensector, in het bijzonder voor verpakkingsmaterialen en textiel. De laatste trends tonen duidelijk dat de gebruikers van kunststoffen, onder de druk van de wetgeving om de emissie van broeikasgassen te verminderen, nieuwe, biogebaseerde materialen met hoogpresterende eigenschappen ontwikkelen. De ontwikkeling van dergelijke biopolymeren hinkt in Europa en vooral in de grensstreek nog altijd achterop. Dit onderzoeksproject draagt bij aan de regionale economische ontwikkeling door technologische innovatie, met het doel hoogpresterende en competitieve biokunststoffen te ontwikkelen door middel van productiemethoden die zowel uit economisch als uit milieustandpunt duurzaam zijn. Een andere cruciale uitdaging is het vermijden van concurrentie met de voedingsindustrie bij het gebruik van hernieuwbare grondstoffen van plantaardige oorsprong. Het project ALPO wil specifiek nieuwe bouwstenen (monomeren, functionele additieven enz.) en corresponderende biokunststoffen ontwikkelen met gebruik van microalgen, een hernieuwbare, non-food grondstof, via een interdisciplinair academisch en institutioneel partnerschap. De nieuwe soorten biokunststoffen, polyesters en multifunctionele coatings zouden sterke ontwikkelingsperspectieven kunnen hebben voor industriële sectoren die in de grensstreek aanwezig zijn.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet ALPO, qui a débuté le 1er octobre 2016, vise à étudier le potentiel d'une chaîne de production de bioplastiques biosourcés à partir de cultures micro-algales. Ce projet se divise en 6 modules de travail. Les deux premiers sont respectivement consacrés à la dissémination et à la communication des résultats, en assurant une plus-value industrielle transfrontalière sur le territoire INTERREG FWVL. Dans ce contexte, les opérateurs et opérateurs associés d'ALPO, ont mis en place des stratégies de gestion coordonnées par son chef de file, l’Université de Mons, assurant des réunions d’avancement régulières, comités de pilotage, d’accompagnement et des activités inter-projets internes au portefeuille GoToS3. Parmi ces dernières, on peut noter la participation régulière aux comités des chefs de file, aux comités d’accompagnement du projet pilote et des participations actives aux newsletters du site du projet Pilot GoToS3, aux ateliers X-innovation et aux workshops. La stratégie de communication mise notamment sur la sensibilisation des acteurs industriels via des contacts réguliers, par exemple, par diffusion de newsletters reprenant les derniers résultats rassemblés sous des thématiques ciblées, mais aussi une diffusion plus générale via les canaux du web à disposition comme le site ALPO (www.alpo-interreg.eu), le site GoToS3 (www.gotoS3.eu), une page researchgate (https://www.researchgate.net/project/Nouveaux-Materiaux-Polymeres-issus-de-la-Biomasse-Microalgue-Nieuwe-Polymeermaterialen-via-Bouwstenen-uit-Microalgen-New-Polymeric-Materials-from-microalgal-biomass) et les sites des différents opérateurs associés et clusters intéressés par les activités proposées par ALPO. Les opérateurs participent régulièrement à des journées scientifiques et workshops au cours desquels ils peuvent présenter et discuter leurs résultats au niveau international, mais organisent également des workshops propres à ALPO. En l’occurrence, trois ont été organisés jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Le premier a visé à attirer un maximum de chercheurs de tous secteurs confondus afin d’implanter ALPO dans le décor de la recherche sur les bioplastiques biosourcés et sur l’exploitation des cultures de micro-algues, proposant notamment des formations dirigées par les Professeurs responsables pour chaque opérateur ainsi que certains industriels pour justifier l’importance d’ALPO vis-à-vis du tissu industriel INTERREG FWVL. Le deuxième workshop (co-organisé par les projets INTERREG TransUniv et FEDER SPURT) a permis de former les chercheurs à la valorisation des résultats de la recherche et à la transmission de ces derniers vers le secteur industriel. Enfin, le troisième workshop a présenté l’avancement quasi final du projet, introduisant notamment des présentations d’industriels dans le programme afin de permettre de mieux cerner les connexions des résultats d’ALPO avec les activités du tissu régional INTERREG FWVL. Enfin, les opérateurs participent aussi activement aux conférences internationales et publient dans des journaux scientifiques à facteurs d’impact significatifs dans le domaine de recherche. Ces publications sont reprises sur le site ALPO et sur la page researchgate. Le troisième module de travail est consacré à la production et au bioraffinage des microalgues pour la conception de polymères. Dans un premier temps, le potentiel de valorisation de la biomasse algale a été évalué à travers plusieurs souches comprenant entre autres Arthrospira platensis, Chlorella vulgaris et Nannochloropsis gaditana. Plusieurs publications ont repris les principaux résultats prenant en compte (1) la production de biomasse dans des conditions particulières de limitation d’azote, (2) l’impact sur la récolte de certaines méthodes de floculation pour les polysaccharides et (3) l’effet du broyage sur les lipides et, de manière plus générale, les méthodes de quantification des lipides. Le quatrième module vient en aval du précédent et étudie le développement des bioplastiques au départ des résidus à valeur ajoutée obtenus au module 3. Ce module a visé l’exploitation des différentes briques de construction, notamment les lipides et les polysaccharides issus des microalgues. Dans le cas des lipides, une attention particulière a été portée sur leur réticulation, via leur insaturation, par des chimies directes telles que par TAD, en vue de les exploiter comme revêtements fonctionnels. Les polysaccharides ont été exploités, notamment les briques de construction obtenues généralement par des méthodes de fermentation, telles que l’acide succinique. De telles briques ont été ensuite polymérisées en vue d’obtenir des polyesters fonctionnels pour des applications d’emballage. Mentionnons également les méthodes de polymérisation ont été établies selon des procédés verts par l’utilisation de catalyseurs respectueux de l’environnement comme les enzymes. Les résultats ont été valorisés à travers des articles à comité de lecture. Un résumé intermédiaire des principales avancées technologiques des modules 3 et 4 s’énonce donc comme suit : -Meilleur suivi de la production de microalgues en termes de composition -Meilleure méthode d’extraction des microalgues -Développement de polyesters avec des propriétés avancées par voie enzymatique Le module 5 concerne la formation des jeunes chercheurs et industriels. Il a pu notamment être alimenté grâce aux formations proposées lors des différents workshops de Professeurs opérateurs d’ALPO mais aussi grâce à des membres invités, des mondes académiques, industriels ou de la recherche en général. Une dizaine de formations différentes ont donc pu être proposées sur les thématiques de recherche des modules 3 et 4 mais aussi sur des thématiques extérieures et connexes aux sujets d’ALPO. Le module 6 propose , dans un premier volet, la validation des techniques développées, notamment via une analyse de cycle de vie qui a proposé des résultats notamment liés à l’extraction des lipides suivant différents scénarios modélisés sur base de données issues de la littérature et validés sur des données brutes obtenues grâce aux modèles. Dans un second volet, le module 6 vise également le transfert des techniques vers le tissu industriel. Le projet ALPO a notamment pu supporter 3 entreprises des versants belges wallon et flamand (Realco (W), Roam Technology (VL) et Vandeputte (W)), grâce à l’application de techniques analytiques développées dans les modules 3 et 4. Les aspects couverts ont notamment été : -Le profilage chimique par spectrométrie de masse (module 3.1) pour Realco ; -Support analytique pour cultures de micro-algues (module 3.2) pour Roam Technology ; -Expertise en biotechnologie pour le développement d’huiles spécifiques biobasées pour la société Vandeputte (module 4.2). Le contact avec le tissu industriel se renforce avec l’avancée d’ALPO notamment grâce à l’intervention des opérateurs associés qui permettent une identification plus ciblée des entreprises potentiellement intéressées par les résultats du projet.

Achievements (EN):

The ALPO project, which started on 1 October 2016, aims to study the potential of a bioplastic production chain based on micro-algal cultures. This project is divided into 6 work modules. The first two are devoted respectively to the dissemination and communication of results, ensuring cross-border industrial added value in INTERREG FWVL. In this context, ALPO’s operators and associated operators have implemented management strategies coordinated by its leader, the University of Mons, ensuring regular progress meetings, steering committees, support committees and inter-project activities internal to the GoToS3 portfolio. These include regular participation in lead committees, pilot project support committees and active participations in the newsletters of the Pilot GoToS3 project website, X-innovation workshops and workshops. The communication strategy focuses in particular on raising awareness among industrial players through regular contacts, for example, by distributing newsletters containing the latest results gathered under targeted themes, but also a more general dissemination via the web channels available such as the ALPO site (www.alpo-interreg.eu), the GoToS3 site (www.gotoS3.eu), a researchgate page and the sites of the various associated operators and clusters interested in the activities proposed by ALPO. Operators regularly participate in scientific days and workshops during which they can present and discuss their results internationally, but also organise ALPO-specific workshops. In this case, three have been organised so far. The first aim was to attract as many researchers from all sectors as possible in order to implement ALPO in the context of research on biobased bioplastics and on the exploitation of micro-algae crops, offering in particular training courses led by the professors responsible for each operator as well as some industrialists to justify the importance of ALPO vis-à-vis the industrial fabric INTERREG FWVL. The second workshop (co-organised by the INTERREG TRANSUNIV and FEDER Spurt projects) made it possible to train researchers in the valorisation of research results and their transmission to the industrial sector. Finally, the third workshop presented the near-final progress of the project, including presentations of industrialists in the programme in order to better understand the connections of ALPO’s results with the activities of the INTERREG FWVL regional fabric. Finally, operators also actively participate in international conferences and publish in scientific journals with significant impact factors in the field of research. These publications are published on the ALPO website and on the researchgate page. The third work module is devoted to the production and biorefining of microalgae for polymer design. Initially, the potential of algal biomass was evaluated through several strains including Arthrospira platensis, Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis gaditana. Several publications have taken into account the main results taking into account (1) biomass production under special conditions of nitrogen limitation, (2) the impact on harvesting of certain flocculation methods for polysaccharides, and (3) the effect of grinding on lipids and, more generally, lipid quantification methods. The fourth module comes downstream of the previous module and studies the development of bioplastics from the value-added residues obtained in Module 3. This module aimed at the exploitation of the different building bricks, including lipids and polysaccharides from microalgae. In the case of lipids, particular attention was paid to their crosslinking, via their insaturation, by direct chemistries such as TAD, with a view to exploiting them as functional coatings. Polysaccharides were exploited, especially building bricks usually obtained by fermentation methods, such as succinic acid. Such bricks were then polymerised to obtain functional polyesters for packaging applications. The polymerisation methods have also been established using green processes through the use of environmentally friendly catalysts such as enzymes. The results have been valued through peer-reviewed articles. An intermediate summary of the main technological advances in modules 3 and 4 is thus as follows: —Best monitoring of microalgae production in terms of composition -Best method of extraction of microalgae -Development of polyesters with enzymatically advanced properties Module 5 concerns the training of young researchers and industrialists. In particular, it has been fed thanks to the training offered during the various workshops of ALPO Operator Professors but also thanks to invited members, academic, industrial or research worlds in general. Ten different training courses could therefore be offered on the research themes of modules 3 and 4 but also on external themes and related to ALPO’s subjects. Module 6 proposes, in the first part, the validation of the techniques developed, in particular via a life cycle analysis which proposed results related in particular to the extraction of lipids according to different scenarios modelled on data from the literature and validated on raw data obtained from the models. In a second part, module 6 also aims to transfer techniques to the industrial fabric. The ALPO project was able to support three companies from the Belgian Walloon and Flemish sides (Realco (W), Roam Technology (VL) and Vandeputte (W)), thanks to the application of analytical techniques developed in modules 3 and 4. The aspects covered included: Chemical profiling by mass spectrometry (module 3.1) for Realco; —Analytic support for microalgae cultures (module 3.2) for Roam Technology; —Expertises in biotechnology for the development of specific biobased oils for Vandeputte (module 4.2). Contact with the industrial fabric is strengthened with ALPO’s progress, thanks in particular to the intervention of associated operators that allow a more targeted identification of companies potentially interested in the results of the project.
