Description (FR): L’industrie européenne du textile est confrontée à de nombreux défis : se conformer au règlement européen REACH, à la règlementation sur les biocides, à la directive COV et à l’obtention de permis d’environnement. En raison du règlement REACH et de la pression d’associations environnementales, l’utilisation de produits à base de fluorocarbones, choisis pour leurs caractères hydro et oléo répulsifs, va devenir plus restrictive. En effet, leur utilisation présente une préoccupation environnementale en raison de leur toxicité, de leur persistance dans l’environnement et de leur bioaccumulation. Le projet DURATEX vise alors à réaliser des textiles hydro-/oléo-phobes et antimicrobiens, respectueux de l’environnement, pour les domaines du bâtiment et de l'architecture. Les méthodologies devant être mises en œuvre répondent aux exigences de l'industrie textile (coût, vitesse de production, obtention de fonctionnalités complexes, etc.) tout en étant écologiques et applicables via des appareillages déjà existants (c’est-à-dire sans nécessité d'investissement complémentaire et avec possibilité d'une implémentation rapide). L’approche transfrontalière du projet conduit à une plus grande efficacité pour l’élaboration de ces textiles.

Zo moet ze voldoen aan de Europese REACH-reglementering, de reglementering rond biociden en de VOS-richtlijn, en moet ze de nodige milieuvergunningen verkrijgen. Als gevolg van de REACH-reglementering en de druk van milieuorganisaties zullen er meer beperkingen komen op het gebruik van fluorocarbonproducten, die voor hun water- en olieafstotende kenmerken worden gekozen. Hun gebruik werpt immers milieuvragen op vanwege hun toxiciteit, hun persistentie in het milieu en hun bioaccumulatie. DURATEX wil milieuvriendelijk water-/olieafstotend en antimicrobieel textiel voor toepassingen in de bouw en architectuur produceren. De ontwikkelde methodologieën zullen beantwoorden aan de eisen van de textielindustrie (kost, productiesnelheid, verkrijgen van complexe functionaliteiten), ecologisch zijn en met bestaande machines toepast kunnen worden (geen specifieke investeringen nodig en snelle implementatie mogelijk). De grensoverschrijdende aanpak van het project leidt tot een hogere efficiëntie in de ontwikkeling van deze textielsoorten.

The DURATEX project aims to produce environmentally friendly hydrophobic/oleophobic and antimicrobial textiles for buildings and architecture. The methodologies to be implemented meet the requirements of the textile industry (cost, speed of production, obtaining complex functionalities, etc.) while being environmentally friendly and applicable via already existing equipment (that is to say without the need for additional investment and with the possibility of rapid implementation). The cross-border approach of the project leads to greater efficiency for the development of these textiles.
Read more Achievements (FR): L'objectif de ce projet transfrontalier est de développer des finitions textiles conférant des propriétés hydro-/oléophobes et antibactériennes. Le consortium du projet est constitué de 5 partenaires. UCL et Certech possèdent l’expertise de la chimie nécessaire pour réaliser les fonctionnalisations ; Ensait et Centexbel ont la connaissance des produits alternatifs éco-respectueux ; Ensait, CETI et Centexbel ont l’expertise des techniques de l’industrie textile. Cette collaboration est indispensable pour implémenter avec succès ces technologies afin de réaliser des textiles antimicrobiens, résistants à l’eau et aux huiles. Des nouveaux revêtements efficaces, capables de conférer des propriétés superhydrophobes à des tissus textiles, ont été réalisés en une seule étape. Cela a été possible grâce au transfert de connaissances sur les textiles du partenaire flamand (Centexbel) vers les partenaires wallons (Certech et UCL) et vice versa. Les paramètres ont été optimisés par Certech et UCL, sur base de suggestions de Centexbel, afin de se rapprocher des conditions de mise en œuvre industrielles. De bons résultats ont été obtenus pour les propriétés superhydrophobes. Les résultats montrent que l'eau perle et roule sur ces surfaces, démontrant de la sorte que la superhydrophobicité peut être atteinte via l'emploi de formulations exclusivement aqueuses, et en utilisant des composés exempts de fluor. Cela est un résultat très important de la recherche, obtenu grâce aux efforts conjoints des partenaires flamand et wallons. En effet, cela démontre la possibilité d’obtenir des textiles extrêmement résistants à l’eau, tout en utilisant des procédés exempts de solvant organiques toxiques, et en évitant l’utilisation de composés fluorés qui seront bannis par la législation européenne dans le futur. Quand ce même type de surfaces est modifiée par un composé contenant de courtes chaînes fluorées (C4), qui sont encore tolérées par la législation européenne, une forte oléophobie apparaît en plus de la super-hydrophobie. Les objectifs initiaux du projet ont donc tous les deux été atteints. Dans les deux cas, les propriétés de répellence à l’eau et aux huiles résultent d’une augmentation de la rugosité des textiles, apportée par l’ajout de nanoparticules de silice dans les formulations. Il est cependant souhaitable de développer des formulations exemptes de nanoparticules. UCL s'est par conséquent concentré sur l'examen des propriétés hydrophobes inhérentes à la texturation/rugosité intrinsèque des textiles. Il est apparu que la rugosité du tissu est un paramètre majeur qui contrôle la répellence de l’eau. UCL a donc finalisé une étude du lien entre mouillabilité et texturation de surface de tissus et a développé un formalisme mathématique capable de reproduire et prédire les angles de contact et de roulement de gouttes d'eau sur ce type de tissus. Ce modèle permet d'identifier les paramètres q’il faut améliorer pour accroître la glissance/roulement des gouttes sur des tissus. Cette étude et ce modèle vont plus loin que ce qui avait été initialement proposé par le projet, et ont suscité l’intérêt de sociétés impliquées dans le textile, comme la société Décathlon. En outre, UCL a rapidement examiné la transférabilité de certains des revêtements vers d'autres surfaces que les textiles (i.e., le verre ou le carton)UCL, avec des résultats encourageants. En ce qui concerne le Certech, il s'était focalisé sur l'utilisation de solutions de divers silanes de façon à générer la super-hydrophobicité, tout en utilisant des particules différentes de celles de l'UCL. Ces résultats étaient prometteurs mais généralement inférieurs à ceux obtenus par UCL. Une voie alternative a été poursuivie en utilant une cire comme agent d’hydrophobisation. Des angles de contact à l’eau d’environ 140° ont étét obtenus en présence de particules de silice : cependant la tenue mécanique reste à améliorer. Enfin, Certech a réussi de rendre les surfaces des tissus de polyester hydrophobes par la modification de la surface de particules. Différents produits ont été identifiés par Ensait, CETI et Centexbel comme agents antimicrobiens potentiels pour les différents procédés (extrusion, diffusion, foulardage, enduction). - Pour le procédé de filage exécuté par l’Ensait, des agents actifs tels que les tanins, la caséine hydrolysée, la lignine et le chlorellin (extract des microalgues) ont été utilisés. Le CETI produit des multifilaments avec lignine en configuration bicomposante cœur (PET)/gaines (PER+2% lignine). Des essais de filage ont été réalisés en utilisant le PP chargé à 2% de tanins. - La fonctionnalisation par diffusion des tissus en PET nécessite l’utilisation de molécules de petite taille et d’un paramètre de solubilité proche de celui de la fibre de PET. Les résultats montrent que les tissus fonctionnalisés par diffusion par l’Ensait sont efficaces contre les bactéries S. epidermis, S. aureus et E. coli. Des études ont montré le potentiel de l'utilisation de la technique conventionnelle des micro-ondes pour la fonctionnalisation de tissu polyester avec de la vaniline. Comme la littérature montre ; il y a une synergie possible entre certains agents antibactériens. - Des formulations aqueuses ont été sélectionnées pour la fonctionnalisation par foulardage par Centexbel. Certains tissus fonctionnalisés sont efficaces contre les bactéries S. aureus et K. pneumoniae. - Des enductions biosourcées (sur base de polyuréthane) et antibactériens sont examinées pour améliorer la durabilité de l'activité antibactérienne (e.g. après lavage). Certaines enductions ont une bonne résistance aux lavages à 40°C ou même à 60°C. Des produits antimicrobiens sont échangés entre Centexbel et Ensait. Certech a également ajouté dans sa formulation du thymol ou du Cinnamaldéhyde, deux antibactériens employés par l'ENSAIT. Les angles de contacts obtenus avec ces solutions sont identiques aux angles obtenus avec les solutions sans les antibactériens. Ils montrent aussi une activité antibactérienne. Read more Achievements (EN): The objective of this cross-border project is to develop textile finishes conferring hydro/oleophobic and antibacterial properties. The consortium of the project consists of 5 partners. UCL and Certech have the chemistry expertise needed to perform the functionalisations; ENSAIT and Centexbel have the knowledge of eco-respecting alternative products; ENSAIT, CETI and Centexbel have the expertise of textile industry techniques. This collaboration is essential to successfully implement these technologies in order to make antimicrobial textiles, resistant to water and oils. New effective coatings, capable of conferring superhydrophobic properties on textile fabrics, were made in a single step. This was possible thanks to the transfer of knowledge on textiles from the Flemish partner (Centexbel) to the Walloon partners (Certech and UCL) and vice versa. The parameters were optimised by Certech and UCL, based on Centexbel’s suggestions, in order to move closer to the industrial implementation conditions. Good results were obtained for superhydrophobic properties. The results show that pearl water and rolls on these surfaces, demonstrating that superhydrophobicity can be achieved through the use of exclusively aqueous formulations, and by using fluorine-free compounds. This is a very important result of the research, achieved through the joint efforts of the Flemish and Walloon partners. Indeed, this demonstrates the possibility of obtaining extremely water-resistant textiles, while using processes free of toxic organic solvents, and avoiding the use of fluorinated compounds that will be banned by EU legislation in the future. When this same type of surfaces is modified by a compound containing short fluorinated chains (C4), which are still tolerated by European legislation, a strong oleophobia appears in addition to super-hydrophobia. The initial objectives of the project were therefore both met. In both cases, the properties of replenishment to water and oils result from an increase in textile roughness, brought by the addition of silica nanoparticles in formulations. However, it is desirable to develop nanoparticle-free formulations. UCL therefore focused on examining the hydrophobic properties inherent in texturing/intrinsic roughness of textiles. It appeared that the roughness of the tissue is a major parameter that controls the replenishment of water. UCL therefore finalised a study of the link between wetting and surface texturing of tissues and developed a mathematical formalism capable of replicating and predicting the contact and bearing angles of water drops on this type of tissue. This model identifies the parameters that need to be improved to increase the slip/rolling of drops on tissues. This study and this model go beyond what was originally proposed by the project, and sparked the interest of companies involved in textiles, such as Decathlon. In addition, UCL quickly examined the transferability of some of the coatings to other surfaces than textiles (i.e., glass or cardboard)UCL, with encouraging results. For Certech, he focused on using solutions from various silanes to generate super-hydrophobicity, while using particles different from those of UCL. These results were promising but generally lower than those obtained by UCL. An alternative pathway was continued by using a wax as a hydrophobic agent. Angles of contact with water of approximately 140° were obtained in the presence of silica particles: however, the mechanical outfit remains to be improved. Finally, Certech managed to make the surfaces of polyester hydrophobic fabrics by modifying the particle surface. Various products have been identified by Ensait, CETI and Centexbel as potential antimicrobial agents for the various processes (extrusion, diffusion, scarfing, coating). — For the spinning process carried out by Ensait, active agents such as tannins, hydrolysed casein, lignin and chlorellin (microalgae extract) were used. CETI produces multifilaments with lignin in two-component core configuration (PET)/gains (PER+ 2 % lignin). Spinning tests were carried out using the PP loaded with 2 % tannins. — Functionalisation by diffusion of PET tissues requires the use of small molecules and a solubility parameter similar to that of PET fiber. The results show that tissues functionalised by diffusion by Ensait are effective against S. epidermis, S. aureus, and E. coli bacteria. Studies have shown the potential of using conventional microwave technique for functionalising polyester fabric with vaniline. As the literature shows; there is a possible synergy between certain antibacterial agents. — Aqueous formulations have been selected for functionalisation by Centexbel scarf. Some functionalised tissues are effective against S. aureus and K. pneumoniae bacteria. — Biobased (polyurethane) and antibacterial coatings are examined to improve the durability of antibacterial activity (e.g. after washing). Some coatings have good washing resistance at 40 °C or even 60 °C. Antimicrobial products are exchanged between Centexbel and Ensait. Certech has also added in its formulation thymol or Cinnamaldehyde, two antibacterials used by ENSAIT. The contact angles obtained with these solutions are identical to the angles obtained with the solutions without the antibacterials. They also show antibacterial activity.
