Les élastomères thermoplastiques (TPE) sont des matériaux avancés à fort potentiel. Leur utilisation optimale en tant que matière première ou additif dans l’industrie de la transformation nécessite cependant une expertise importante. Outre le fait que de nouveaux types d’élastomères thermoplastiques avec des caractéristiques intéressantes et innovantes restent à développer, les universités et centres techniques de la région transfrontalière jouent un rôle crucial dans ce développement. Il a été constaté que les entreprises ont peu de connaissances concernant la grande famille des élastomères, et qu’elles ne réalisent pas non plus que ces matériaux peuvent contribuer de manière significative, notamment en tant qu’additifs, à améliorer les propriétés et la processabilité de nombreux produits. En outre, les entreprises ne sont pas au courant des technologies disponibles qui peuvent être utilisées dans la conception de ces nouveaux produits. Ce projet a donc pour but de familiariser les entreprises avec les immenses possibilités qu’offrent les élastomères thermoplastiques, dans le but d’améliorer les performances et la transformation des polymères classiques par l’accroissement des connaissances sur les relations entre la morphologie, la transformation et les propriétés des matériaux à base d’élastomères thermoplastiques, et d’amener cette technologie unique aux entreprises de la région transfrontalière afin qu’elles puissent en bénéficier pleinement.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are advanced materials with high potential. Their optimal use as raw material or additive in the processing industry, however, requires significant expertise. In addition to the fact that new types of thermoplastic elastomers with interesting and innovative features remain to be developed, universities and technical centres in the cross-border region play a crucial role in this development. It has been found that companies have little knowledge of the large elastomer family, nor do they realise that these materials can make a significant contribution, particularly as additives, to improving the properties and processability of many products. Furthermore, companies are not aware of the available technologies that can be used in the design of these new products. The aim of this project is, therefore, to familiarise companies with the immense possibilities offered by thermoplastic elastomers, with the aim of improving the performance and processing of conventional polymers by increasing knowledge of the relationships between the morphology, transformation and the properties of materials based on thermoplastic elastomers, and to bring this unique technology to companies in the cross-border region so that they can fully benefit from it.

Thermoplastische elastomeren (TPE) zijn geavanceerde materialen met een hoog potentieel. Hun optimale gebruik als grondstof of additief in de verwerkende industrie vereist echter een aanzienlijke expertise. De ontwikkeling van nieuwe types thermoplastische elastomeren met interessante en innovatieve eigenschappen staat niet stil. Universiteiten en technische centra in de grensstreek spelen in deze ontwikkeling een cruciale rol. De bedrijven blijken weinig bekend te zijn met de grote elastomerenfamilie en niet te beseffen dat deze materialen een belangrijk bijdrage kunnen leveren, meer bepaald als additieven, aan de verbetering van de eigenschappen en de verwerkbaarheid van veel producten. Bovendien weten de ondernemingen niet welke technologieën zij voor het ontwerp van deze nieuwe producten kunnen gebruiken. Daarom wil dit project de ondernemingen vertrouwd maken met de rijke mogelijkheden van thermoplastische elastomeren om de prestaties en verwerking van klassieke polymeren te verbeteren, door meer kennis te verwerven over de relaties tussen de morfologie, de verwerking en de eigenschappen van materialen op basis van thermoplastische elastomeren en door deze unieke technologie toe te passen in de grensstreek zodat zij ze ten volle kan benutten.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet Elasto-Plast "Des élastomères conventionnels aux élastomères thermoplastiques intelligents" a pour but de fournir aux entreprises des connaissances sur les élastomères thermoplastiques (TPE) actuels et nouveaux ainsi qu'un soutien pour la valorisation des TPE dans le cadre du développement de produits nouveaux ou améliorés. Les objectifs principaux de ce projet sont : cartographie des propriétés du TPE et l'amélioration des propriétés de l'actuelle génération de TPE, la démonstration de leur mise en ?uvre et l'acquisition de nouvelles connaissances liées à la deuxième génération de TPE. Différents secteurs industriels (textile, plasturgie, industrie de l'impression 3D) bien implantés dans la zone FWVL seront impliqués dans la valorisation des TPE. Centexbel, chef de file de ce projet INTERREG, assure la coordination entre les partenaires des différentes régions (ULille, URCA, KULAK, Materia Nova, IMT et Armines) qui contribuent à la réalisation du projet transfrontalier et interrégional. Les connaissances sont largement diffusées auprès des entreprises dans la région INTERREG FWVL concernées via un site web du projet "Elasto-Plast" (https://www.interreg-elastoplast.eu). L'information pertinente est diffusée en utilisant le site web ou le compte Twitter d'Elasto-Plast. De plus, des informations techniques supplémentaires sont diffusées via des bulletins d'informations. La participation à des événements, des congrès et des salons internationaux assure non seulement l'acquisition de connaissances aux partenaires du projet, mais offre également la possibilité de nouer des contacts intéressants et de faire connaître le projet au-delà des limites du projet INTERREG. Des événements et formations transfrontaliers supplémentaires ont déjà été organisés dans le cadre du projet afin de présenter les résultats du projet aux sociétés du groupe cible. De plus, des entreprises du secteur ont été invitées à démontrer de manière concrète les différentes possibilités des TPE. Outre les actions de dissémination, les partenaires du projet tentent d'aider davantage les entreprises dans la région en répondant à des questions concrètes. Des conseils génériques relatifs aux TPE sont fournis. Outre ces conseils, les partenaires octroient également de l'aide ("de minimis") aux entreprises dans le cadre de questions/problèmes concrets. De cette manière, les partenaires du projet espèrent arriver à une mise en œuvre maximale de ces précieux matériaux que sont les TPE dans les entreprises du groupe cible. Plusieurs TPE existants ou en développement seront étudiés. L'utilisation des TPE de première génération est déjà en test dans plusieurs applications (moulage par injection, extrusion, compression, impression 3D,...). Des mélanges de thermoplastiques (ajout de TPE commerciaux à des formulations polymères classiques) sont actuellement étudiés afin d'obtenir des matières plastiques aux propriétés Tant des TPE purs que des mélanges avec des thermoplastiques sont analysés dans le but d'évaluer le traitement d'une part et de comparer les propriétés du matériau d'autre part. d'impact ou de compression améliorées. L'influence des charges sur les propriétés du TPE est à l'étude. Le moussage du TPE et l'influence sur les propriétés de compression sont étudiés. En outre, les options de déploiement de TPE dans un certain nombre d'applications finales sont en cours d'examen avec les entreprises intéressées. Le but de ces essais est de montrer le potentiel de ces matériaux d'une part et d'identifier les verrous technologiques restants d'autre part. En outre, l'utilisation des TPE sera évaluée. Une étude bibliographique a permis de souligner l'absence de TPE de 2e génération de nature polaire. Différents systèmes et stratégies catalytiques ont été développés et testés. Les résultats montrent que l'obtention des copolymères à blocs visés est possible. Une phase d'optimisation est en cours. Outre le TPE polaire, des voies de synthèse pour les élastomères thermoplastiques à base de saccharide sont en cours d'élaboration. Plusieurs démonstrateurs ont été mis au point afin de faire la démonstration des propriétés des TPE. Les démonstrateurs ont été sélectionnés en concertation avec les entreprises de la région frontalière et après constatation des besoins concrets. Le projet Elasto-Plast fait partie du portefeuille de projets INTERREG GoToS 3. Des efforts ont été effectués pour trouver des synergies entre les différents projets constitutifs tant en termes de contenu (recherche) qu'au niveau de la communication collaborative. Dans leur recherche de produits alternatifs pour une application spécifique, un collaborateur du projet Bioharv (Centexbel) a été assisté par un collaborateur du projet Elasto-Plast (Centexbel). Certains tests exploratoires et d'évaluation ont été menés avec succès, ce qui a également conduit à une publication commune. Les canaux de communication du projet pilote ont été régulièrement utilisés pour faire connaître les événements et les sessions de formation organisés. Les partenaires du projet Elasto-Plast ont participé à diverses initiatives GoToS3 (atelier X-innovation, atelier Design Fiction, événement Cross Innovation, etc.) ou ont organisé des initiatives avec eux pour détecter les synergies possibles entre les sous-projets (atelier sur le développement de matériaux tout-en-un).

The Elasto-Plast project “From conventional elastomers to intelligent thermoplastic elastomers” aims to provide companies with knowledge on current and new thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) as well as support for the valorisation of TPEs as part of the development of new or improved products. The main objectives of this project are: mapping the properties of the TPE and improving the properties of the current generation of TPEs, demonstrating their implementation and acquiring new knowledge related to the second generation of TPEs. Various industrial sectors (textile, plastics, 3D printing industry) well established in the FWVL zone will be involved in the valorisation of TPEs. Centexbel, leader of this INTERREG project, coordinates the partners of the different regions (ULille, URCA, KULAK, Materia Nova, IMT and Armines) who contribute to the realisation of the cross-border and interregional project. Knowledge is widely disseminated to companies in the INTERREG FWVL region concerned via a website of the “Elasto-Plast” project (https://www.interreg-elastoplast.eu). The relevant information is disseminated using Elasto-Plast’s website or Twitter account. In addition, additional technical information is disseminated via newsletters. Participation in international events, congresses and trade fairs not only ensures the acquisition of knowledge to the project partners, but also offers the opportunity to make interesting contacts and publicise the project beyond the limits of the INTERREG project. Additional cross-border events and trainings have already been organised as part of the project to present the results of the project to the target group companies. In addition, companies in the sector were asked to demonstrate concretely the different possibilities of TPEs. In addition to dissemination actions, the project partners are trying to further help businesses in the region by answering concrete questions. Generic advice on TPEs is provided. In addition to this advice, the partners also provide (‘de minimis’) aid to companies in the context of concrete questions/problems. In this way, the project partners hope to achieve maximum implementation of these valuable materials that are TPEs in the companies of the target group. Several existing or developing TPEs will be studied. The use of first generation TPEs is already being tested in several applications (injection moulding, extrusion, compression, 3D printing,...). Mixtures of thermoplastics (addition of commercial TPEs to conventional polymer formulations) are currently being studied in order to obtain plastics with the properties of both pure TPEs and mixtures with thermoplastics are analysed in order to evaluate the treatment on the one hand and to compare the material’s properties of improved impact or compression. The influence of loads on the properties of TPE is being studied. The foaming of TPE and the influence on compression properties are studied. In addition, the options for deploying TPEs in a number of final applications are being discussed with interested companies. The purpose of these tests is to show the potential of these materials on the one hand and to identify the remaining technological locks on the other. In addition, the use of TPEs will be evaluated. A bibliographical study highlighted the absence of 2nd generation polar-type TPEs. Different catalytic systems and strategies have been developed and tested. The results show that obtaining the targeted block copolymers is possible. An optimisation phase is underway. In addition to polar TPE, synthetic pathways for saccharide-based thermoplastic elastomers are being developed. Several demonstrators have been developed to demonstrate the properties of TPEs. The demonstrators were selected in consultation with companies in the border region and after identification of concrete needs. The Elasto-Plast project is part of the INTERREG GoToS3 project portfolio. Efforts have been made to find synergies between the different constituent projects both in terms of content (research) and in terms of collaborative communication. In their search for alternative products for a specific application, a collaborator of the BIOHARV project (Centexbel) was assisted by a collaborator of the Elasto-Plast project (Centexbel). Some exploratory and evaluation tests were successfully conducted, which also led to a joint publication. The communication channels of the pilot project were regularly used to publicise the events and training sessions organised. The partners of the Elasto-Plast project participated in various GoToS3 initiatives (workshop X-innovation, Design Fiction workshop, Cross Innovation event, etc.) or organised initiatives with them to detect possible synergies between sub-projects (workshop on the development of all-in-one materials).

Expected Results (FR):

On estime que dans la région frontalière, l’industrie textile et la plasturgie ont un chiffre d’affaires de 8 milliards d’euros. On peut supposer que 10% de ce chiffre est réinvesti dans la R&D. Le projet actuel pourrait augmenter les innovations supplémentaires dans la région. Même si le projet contribue d’abord avec 1-2% seulement aux dépenses R&D, cela signifie déjà une dépense de 8 à 16 millions d’euros.

Expected Results (EN):

It is estimated that in the border region, the textile industry and the plastics industry have a turnover of 8 billion euros. It can be assumed that 10% of this figure is reinvested in R&D. The current project could foster additional developments in the region. Even if the project contributes only 1 to 2% to R&D expenditure, it already means an expense of 8 to 16 million euros.

De omzet van de textiel- en kunststoffensector in de grensregio wordt op € 8 miljard euro geraamd. We kunnen ervan uitgaan dat 10% van dit bedrag wordt geherinvesteerd in O&O. Dit project zou bijkomende ontwikkelingen in de regio kunnen bevorderen. Zelfs als slechts 1 tot 2% naar O&O gaat, betekent dit al een uitgave van € 8 tot 16 miljoen euro.

Nombre d’entreprises participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 5. Sur les entreprises qui peuvent être intéressées pour introduire les élastomères dans leurs produits, nous estimons que 5 d’entre elles prendront part activement à des travaux de recherche, notamment lors de l’activité production de prototypes. Nombre d'établissements de recherche participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 5. Le projet mobilise déjà des instituts de recherche transfrontaliers dès son démarrage. On peut raisonnablement estimer que les résultats obtenus permettront d’attirer des collaborations avec d’autres instituions dans les domaines de textile et de la plasturgie. Nombre de sessions de formation conjointes : 4. Une session de formation va être organisée par an. Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien : 40. Au terme de ce projet, le but est de proposer des démonstrateurs fonctionnels. Il s’agira ensuite, au-delà du projet, de réaliser le transfert de ces développements, menés à l’échelle des laboratoires de recherche, vers le monde industriel. La diffusion des résultats du projet se fera de manière aussi large que possible, sans sélection et sans restriction d’entreprise. Ceci permettra aux entreprises d’utiliser ces résultats et de continuer le développement sur leurs propres moyens. Nous estimons que au moins 40 entreprises peuvent bénéficier du support apporté par l’information technique développée dans ce projet. Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien pour introduire des produits nouveaux pour l'entreprise : 2. Au moins deux entreprises développeront des produits nouveaux après la fin du projet.

De projectresultaten zullen op een zo breed mogelijke schaal worden verspreid, zonder selectie van ondernemingen of beperkende criteria. Zo kunnen ook andere ondernemingen deze resultaten gebruiken en de ontwikkeling zelf verder zetten. We verwachten dat minstens 40 ondernemingen voordeel kunnen halen uit de technische informatie die in dit project wordt ontwikkeld. Aantal ondernemingen die steun ontvangen om nieuwe producten voor de onderneming in te voeren: 2. Minstens twee ondernemingen zullen na afloop van het project nieuwe producten ontwikkelen.
