GRENSEVILT’s goal is to improve border crossing, including conflict management of moose, wolf and wolverines in the bar forest in Inner Scandinavia, on twos of the border and south of the Sami Tamrein area. Wood a combination of new knowledge, networking and increased dialogue across the national branch will reduce border barriers and stimulate the sustainable use of forest resources that take into account the different interests within the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

GRENSEVILTs mål er å legge grunnlag for en bedre grense-overskridende, inkluderende og konfliktreduserende forvaltning av elg, ulv og jerv i barskogen i Indre Skandinavia, på tvers av riksgrensen og sør for det samiske tamreinområdet. Ved en kombinasjon av ny kunnskap, nettverksbygging og økt dialog på tvers av riksgrensen vil prosjektet redusere grensebarrierer og stimulere til bærekraftig bruk av skogens ressurser som tar hensyn til de ulike interessene innenfor regionens natur- og kulturarv.

Achievements (EN):

A central part of the project is knowledge acquisition. Grensevilt works, among other things, to capture and label animals with GPS transmitters to gain detailed knowledge of the animals’ movement patterns. This includes mapping movements in relation to administrative boundaries. What for moose, wolves and wolverines is a contiguous coniferous forest area for us humans is a map full of boundary lines. Everything from property boundaries to the national border. Forest, soil and wildlife are managed differently in Sweden and Norway based on legislation, history and different interests. The Grensevilt project is working to create the conditions for improved and cross-border multi-species management of moose, wolf and wolverine. The project also includes questions about hunting and forestry. How do animals do? Grensevilt uses data on movement patterns to study how many prey animals take, how large areas they exploit, and how they interact with each other and with their prey. In autumn 2019, field studies were carried out to find out how human moose hunting can affect the predators’ choice of food by leaving certain butchery residues in the forest by hunters. The studies showed, among other things, that the wolves in two wolves killed moose as often in the autumn as previously documented in winter. In a third wolf territory fewer moose were killed than during winter, but the wolves compensated for this to some extent by visiting butcher residues after shot moose and also killing several badgers. The studies showed that wolverines make extensive use of slaughter residues from shot moose, which seems to be the most important food source during this period, but also moose carcasses left behind by the wolves. In addition, the wolverines eat smaller species such as hares, beavers, petty rodents, capercaillie and unclean. Follow the moose on the web: The project is also working on extensive network and communication work, which together with knowledge acquisition will contribute to cross-border and inclusive wildlife management. The network consists, among other things, of landowners, interest groups and public administration and its main function is to provide a forum for open dialogue between different stakeholders on the challenges of today’s management of moose and predators, and future scenarios. Also towards the public, Grensevilt works actively with communication, for example through the website www.grensevilt.weebly.com, social media and the ability to follow GPS-marked moose (with a delay of two weeks) via www.dyreposisjoner.no Project owner is Sweden’s country.

En central del i projektet är kunskapsinhämtning. GRENSEVILT arbetar bland annat med att fånga och märka djur med GPS-sändare för att få detaljerad kunskap om djurens rörelsemönster. Det handlar bland annat om att kartlägga rörelser i relation till administrativa gränser. Det som för älgar, vargar och järvar är ett sammanhängande barrskogsområde är för oss människor en karta full av gränslinjer. Allt från fastighetsgränser till riksgränsen. Skog, jord och vilda djur förvaltas olika i Sverige och Norge baserat på lagstiftning, historik och olika intressen. Projektet GRENSEVILT arbetar med att skapa förutsättningar för en förbättrad och gränsöverskridande flerartsförvaltning av älg, varg och järv. Projektet inkluderar också frågor om jakt och skogsbruk. Hur gör djur? GRENSEVILT använder data på rörelsemönster för att studera hur många bytesdjur rovdjuren tar, hur stora arealer de utnyttjar, och hur de interagerar med varandra och med sina bytesdjur. Under hösten 2019 genomfördes fältstudier för att ta reda på hur människans älgjakt kan påverka rovdjurens val av föda genom att vissa slaktrester lämnas kvar i skogen av jägarna. Studierna visade bland annat att vargarna i två vargrevir dödade älg lika ofta under hösten som tidigare dokumenterats under vintern. I ett tredje vargrevir dödades färre älgar än under vintern men vargarna kompenserade detta till viss del genom att besöka slaktrester efter skjutna älgar och att dessutom döda flera grävlingar. Studierna visade att järvar i stor utsträckning utnyttjar slaktrester från skjutna älgar, vilket tycks vara den viktigaste födokällan under denna period, men även älgkadaver som vargarna lämnat efter sig. Dessutom äter järvarna mindre arter som hare, bäver, smågnagare, tjäder och orre. Följ älgen på webben: Projektet arbetar även med ett omfattande nätverks- och kommunikationsarbete, som tillsammans med kunskapsinhämtning ska bidra till en gränsöverskridande och inkluderande viltförvaltning. Nätverket består bland annat av markägare, intressegrupper och offentlig förvaltning och dess viktigaste funktion är att vara ett forum för öppen dialog mellan olika aktörer om utmaningar med dagens förvaltning av älg och rovdjur, och framtida scenarier. Även gentemot allmänheten arbetar GRENSEVILT aktivt med kommunikation, till exempel genom webbsidan www.grensevilt.weebly.com, sociala medier och möjligheten att följa GPS-märkta älgar (med två veckors fördröjning) via www.dyreposisjoner.no Projektägare är Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet och Høgskolen i Innlandet.
