Description (EN):

Nordkalotten’s common culture and history has a prominent place in the Interreg-funded Längs Norrskensvägen (http://northernlightsroute.com/). The road runs along the border between Finland and Sweden to North Norway. The common background of neighbouring peoples and increasing awareness of the common roots and identity form the basis of the cross-border project. The road is built but how can you get content and business along the way? The project’s vision is to develop the Nordkalott area into a more active place to live and travel. The stories and storytelling are methods to increase travel (and cultural) business opportunities in the field. In the stories, the area’s distinctive linguistic and cultural traditions appear among which the Sami language has a prominent position. The stories aim to highlight other common linguistic traditions as well as the disappearance of meänkieli and friendliness. Storytelling is a world-wide known ancient method for effective communication of messages. Therefore, the aim of the project is to stimulate storytelling in the area by looking up and selecting inspiring stories in the so-called pilot municipalities that are Tornio-Haparanda, Kolari-Pajala and Nordreisa. With the help of the stories, the project will strive to increase interest in Nordkalotten and especially for Norrskensvägen as a destination. The project will collaborate with the area’s tourism and culture entrepreneurs. The stories are collected from locals but also from travellers 1) through interviews, 2) through social media and 3) from literature. The final result of the project is a common ‘Norrskensvägen’ story arc. In the project, the stories are made visible through different types of productions that include 1) the story book (a collection of stories), 2) music production (new and old music), 3) a short film and 4) oral storytelling using the elements of the drama. The partners in the project, both public and private, are involved in collecting stories and participating in story production. The above productions can also be used by other actors such as municipalities and associations. The project will also have an intensive collaboration with actors in the area such as Heart of Lapland in northern Sweden. The project will also participate in various local festival events in order to further spread stories. The following main themes serve as a framework for the project: 1) methods for collection and selection of stories have been developed, 2) stories in different forms and means of expression (productions) have been erected 3) (travelers) stories are made visible and digitally visualised, and 4) national and cross-industry networks use storytelling in their marketing. The project contributes to the Interreg Nord specific objective 3. 1. ‘Preserving, nurturing, promoting and developing nature and cultural heritage’; The project contributes to the protection, preservation and further development of cultural tradition and identity by applying the new media’s solutions to ancient storytelling traditions. At the same time, the project contributes to the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy by strengthening social cohesion, the innovation environment of enterprises and by strengthening the European travel industry.

Nordkalottens gemensamma kultur och historia har en framträdande plats i den Interreg-finansierade Längs Norrskensvägen (http://northernlightsroute.com/). Vägen går längs gränsen mellan Finland och Sverige till Nord-Norge. Grannfolkens gemensamma bakgrund och ökande medvetenhet om de gemensamma rötterna och den gemensamma identiteten utgör grunden för det gränsöverskridande projektet. Vägen är byggd men hur kan man få innehåll och affärsverksamhet längs med vägen? Projektets vision består av att utveckla Nordkalottområdet till en aktivare plats att leva och turista. Berättelserna och storytelling är metoder att öka rese- (och kultur-) företagens affärsmöjligheter på området. I berättelserna framträder för området utmärkande språkliga och kulturella traditioner bland vilka det samiska språket har en framträdande position. Genom berättelserna strävar man efter att framhäva även andra gemensamma språkliga traditioner på väg att försvinna såsom meänkieli och kvänska. Storytelling är en världsomfattande känd urgammal metod för effektiv förmedling av budskap. Därför är projektets syfte att stimulera berättandet på området genom att leta upp och välja ut inspirerande historier i de s.k. pilotkommunerna som är Torneå-Haparanda, Kolari-Pajala och Nordreisa. Med hjälp av berättelserna ska projektet sträva efter att öka intresset för Nordkalotten och särskilt för Norrskensvägen som en destination. Projektet ska samarbeta med områdets företagare inom turism och kultur. Berättelserna samlas in från lokalbefolkningen men även från resenärer 1) genom intervjuer, 2) genom social media och 3) från litteraturen. Som slutresultat på projektet skapas en gemensam ¿Norrskensvägens Berättelsebåge¿. I projektet synliggörs berättelserna genom olika typer av produktioner som omfattar 1) Berättelseboken (en samling berättelser), 2) musikproduktion (ny och gammal musik), 3) en kortfilm och 4) muntligt berättande där man använder dramats element. Samarbetsparterna i projektet, både offentliga och privata, är med och samlar in berättelser och deltar i berättelseproduktionen. Ovan nämnda produktioner kan också användas av andra aktörer såsom kommuner och föreningar. Projektet ska också ha ett intensivt samarbete med områdets aktörer som exempelvis Heart of Lapland i norra Sverige. Projektet kommer också delta i olika lokala festivalevenemang för att kunna sprida berättelser ytterligare. Följande huvudteman fungerar som ram till projektet: 1) metoder för insamling och urval av berättelser har utvecklats, 2) berättelser i olika former och uttrycksmedel (produktioner) har uppförts 3) (resenärernas) berättelser görs synliga och visualiseras digitalt och 4) nationella och branschöverskridande nätverk använder storytelling i sin marknadsföring. Projektet bidrar till Interreg Nord-programmets särskilda mål 3. 1. ¿Att bevara, vårda, främja och utveckla naturen och kulturarvet¿. Projektet bidrar till att skydda, bevara och vidareutveckla kulturtraditionen och kulturidentiteten genom att tillämpa den nya medias lösningar i urtida storytelling-traditioner. Projektet bidrar samtidigt till målen i Europa 2020-strategin genom att förstärka den sociala sammanhållningen, företagens innovationsmiljö samt genom att förstärka den europeiska resebranschen.

Achievements (EN):

Objective: The main objective of the project was to promote regional storytelling and strengthen local identity by locating inspiring and cross-border stories. Results: 110 stories in the form of 18 pieces of music, 19 films/animations, 14 texts, 23 interviews and 38 works of art, and 53 news articles were published through the project’s website. A “Storybook” was published both as an e-book and in a printed version. All stories are available for use. The project also produced an illustrated map of Norrskensvägen and story-based postcards. 70 companies and 418 people have participated in the project’s activities.
