Bottenviken är ett havsområde som delas av en mänskligt konstruerad gräns, men de naturliga processerna i havet och arterna som lever där följer inga gränser. Åtgärder och insatser som görs i Finland kan ha stor inverkan på havsmiljön i Sverige och vice versa. I nuläget finns det dock ingen koordination inom havsförvaltningen mellan länderna. Samtidigt är den mänskliga påverkan på havsmiljön stor och ständigt ökande. Det har föranlett åtgärder på både internationell och nationell nivå för att förbättra möjligheterna till en hållbar planering och förvaltning av havsmiljön och därmed motverka den konstaterade utarmningen av havets biologiska mångfald. Ett effektivt förvaltnings- och planeringsunderlag är kartor över spridningen av habitat och de naturvärden som är kopplade till dessa. De omfattande kunskapsluckorna i förekomsten och den geografiska spridningen av marina arter och habitat i projektområdet hämmar dock framtagandet av dylika kartor. SEAmBOTH-projektet strävar efter att skapa ett välfungerande samarbete mellan länderna genom kunskapsutbyte, harmonisering av definitioner och metoder samt genom att ta fram ett bra gemensamt planeringsunderlag. Projektets huvudmål är att bidra till bevarandet av Bottenvikens biologiska mångfald, dess habitat, ekosystem och ekosystemtjänster, baserat på tillräcklig kunskap, samarbete och en effektiv förvaltning och planering av havsområdet. Projektet ämnar fylla existerande luckor i kunskap och i planeringsunderlag. De konkreta resultaten från projektet kommer att vara gränsöverskridande kartor, riktlinjer för användningen av dessa kartor, samt riktlinjer för vilka arbetsmetoder som fungerar i Bottenviken. Projektet kommer att stödja en hållbar utveckling i regionen, eftersom dess resultat ger oss en bättre förståelse för hur Bottenvikens marina resurser kan nyttjas utan att havsområdets naturvärden skadas eller att regionens biologiska mångfald eller havets ekosystemtjänster utarmas. Projektet kommer även att öka vår kunskap om vilka naturvärden Bottenviken har samt dess rumsliga utbredning, vilket ger förbättrade verktyg för bevarande av dessa värdekärnor. De högsta naturvärdena i regionen är kopplade till grunda områden och därför kommer dessa områden att vara huvudfokus för SEAmBOTH-projektet.

Description (EN):

The Gulf of Bothnia is a sea area shared by a humanly constructed boundary, but the natural processes of the sea and the species that live there do not follow borders. Measures and actions taken in Finland can have a major impact on the marine environment in Sweden and vice versa. However, there is currently no coordination in maritime governance between countries. At the same time, the human impact on the marine environment is large and ever-increasing. It has led to measures at both international and national level to improve opportunities for sustainable planning and management of the marine environment, thereby countering the identified depletion of marine biodiversity. An effective management and planning basis is maps of the dispersion of habitats and the natural values associated with them. However, the extensive knowledge gaps in the presence and geographical spread of marine species and habitats in the project area hamper the development of such maps. The SEAmBOTH project aims to create a well-functioning cooperation between countries through knowledge sharing, harmonisation of definitions and methods and by developing a good common planning basis. The main objective of the project is to contribute to the conservation of the Bothnian Bay’s biodiversity, its habitats, ecosystems and ecosystem services, based on sufficient knowledge, cooperation and efficient management and planning of the marine area. The project aims to fill existing gaps in knowledge and planning. The concrete results of the project will be cross-border maps, guidelines for the use of these maps, as well as guidelines on the working methods that work in the Gulf of Bothnia. The project will support the sustainable development of the region, as its results give us a better understanding of how the marine resources of the Gulf of Bothnia can be exploited without harming the natural values of the marine area or depleting the region’s biodiversity or marine ecosystem services. The project will also increase our knowledge of the nature values of the Gulf of Bothnia and its spatial distribution, which provides improved tools for the preservation of these cores. The highest natural values in the region are linked to shallow areas and therefore these areas will be the main focus of the SEAmBOTH project.

Achievements (SV):

Mål: Projektets huvudsakliga mål var att bidra till bevarandet av Bottenvikens biologiska mångfald, dess habitat och ekosystem samt de ekosystemtjänster mångfalden förser oss med. Resultat: Projektet fokuserade på hållbar förvaltning av norra Bottenviken, samt ökade kunskapen om den marina miljön och främjade samarbete över gränsen. Projektets slutprodukter (t.ex. marina kartor, artidentifieringsguider och verkstadsrapporter) är avsedda för användning av miljöorganisationer, allmänheten och alla andra organisationer som kan behöva dem. Det finns mycket mer arbete att göra i norra Bottenviken. Projektet har visat hur viktigt samarbetet mellan länder och organisationer är, men det finns många fler områden att potentiellt utöka samarbetet inom. Även om mycket data har samlats in i Bottenviken, är det viktigt att fortsätta med fältinventeringarna. Bottenviken skiljer sig mycket från resten av Östersjön, så projektet var tvungen att anpassa vanliga metoder för kartläggning och inventering för den. Detta har lett till att nya tekniker har utvecklats för dessa olika områden. Eftersom klimatförändringarna förändrar miljön är det svårt att exakt veta vad effekterna kommer att bli, så den kunskap som samlats in under detta projekt är avgörande för det fortsatta välbefinnandet för naturen under vatten i norra Bottenviken. https://seamboth.com/

Achievements (EN):

Objective: The main objective of the project was to contribute to the conservation of the Bothnian Bay’s biodiversity, its habitats and ecosystems and the ecosystem services it provides us with. Results: The project focused on the sustainable management of the northern Gulf of Bothnia, as well as increased knowledge of the marine environment and promoted cross-border cooperation. The final products of the project (e.g. marine maps, species identification guides, workshop reports) are intended for use by environmental organisations, the public and any other organisations that may need them. There is much more work to be done in the Gulf of Bothnia. The project has shown the importance of cooperation between countries and organisations, but there are many more areas to potentially expand the cooperation within. Although a lot of data has been collected in the Gulf of Bothnia, it is important to continue with the field inventories. The Gulf of Bothnia is very different from the rest of the Baltic Sea, so the project had to adapt common methods of mapping and inventory for it. This has led to the development of new technologies for these different areas. Since climate change is changing the environment, it is difficult to know exactly what the effects will be, so the knowledge gathered during this project is crucial for the continued well-being of underwater nature in the northern Gulf of Bothnia. https://seamboth.com/
