Genom att främja forskning och utveckling inom reproduktion i Öresundsregionen vill projektet ReproUnion besegra infertilitet. Bland annat ska cirka 20 nya forskningsprojekt säkerställa det. Ofrivillig barnlöshet är ett stort problem i både Sverige och Danmark. Men istället för att varje land utvecklar metoder var för sig, anser projektet ReproUnion att länderna snabbare hittar lösningar om de arbetar tillsammans. – Det finns stora möjligheter med synergier över gränserna. Genom att arbeta tillsammans kan vi bedriva stora forskningsprojekt och samordna vår kunskap. För de symptom som få patienter har så finns det heller ingen anledning att starta behandlingar på båda sidor av Öresund, i stället finns det stora fördelar med att koncentrera det arbetet på ett ställe, säger Aleksander Giwercman, en av initiativtagarna till ReproUnion och professor i reproduktionsmedicin vid Lunds universitet och fortsätter: – Våra länder är ganska små var för sig, och det är därför oerhört betydelsefullt att vi tillsammans kommer upp i en större kritisk massa gällande kompetens och patientunderlag för forskning. Viktigt för samhället: Cirka 15 till 20 procent av alla par i västvärlden har problem med att skaffa barn. Aleksander Giwercman anser att det är en folksjukdom likt andra och är viktigt att förebygga ur såväl medicinsk som samhällsekonomisk synpunkt. – De här behandlingarna är ganska dyra och inte så effektiva. Patienter behöver dessutom ofta gå igenom många behandlingar och vår förståelse kring varför så många har problem är för låg. Om vi vill förebygga ofrivillig barnlöshet måste vi först skaffa oss bättre förståelse, säger han. Öresundsregionen ligger dessutom i framkant gällande reproduktionsforskning, vilket är en bra utgångspunkt för att satsa på att bli världsledande inom fältet. – Lyckas vi med det blir inte bara forskarna glada, utan även patienterna. Det är också bra rent samhällsekonomiskt eftersom det kan leda till samarbete med industrier som i sin tur kan leda till mer effektiva och billigare behandlingar samt nya arbetstillfällen. Synergier över sundet: Projektet bottnar i två inledande samarbetsprojekt. Det tredje projektet ska nu på allvar färdigställa visionen om ett gränsöverskridande gemensamt reproduktionsmedicinskt center. Det här kräver fler forskare och fler forskningsprojekt. Projektet ska leda till minst 20 forskningsprojekt och 25 forskningstjänster. De arbetar även för att inkludera yngre forskare och därmed säkerställa att kompetensen lever vidare. – När vi har valt ut de forskningsprojekt som vi ska profitera har vi fokuserat på de projekt där vi kan uppnå synergier med att arbeta över gränserna, och där vi kan tillföra olika kompetenser. Fokuserar på förståelse och förebyggande arbete: När projektet avslutas är målet att ha stärkt samarbetet med näringslivet och förenklat för patienter att få vård i båda länderna. Dessutom hoppas de att många internationella aktörer blickar mot Öresundsregionen för inspiration. – Vi hoppas att vi kan förebygga och förbättra behandlingen av ofrivillig barnlöshet och ha bättre förståelse kring varför det inträffar. Reproduktionsstörningar är en folksjukdom som många andra och är viktigt att arbeta med, säger Aleksander Giwercman.

By promoting research and development in reproduction in the Öresund region, the ReproUnion project aims to defeat infertility. Among other things, about 20 new research projects will ensure this. Involuntary childlessness is a major problem in both Sweden and Denmark. But instead of each country developing methods individually, the ReproUnion project believes that countries find solutions faster if they work together. There are great opportunities for synergies across borders. By working together, we can conduct major research projects and coordinate our knowledge. “For the symptoms that few patients have, there is no reason to start treatments on both sides of the Sound, instead there are great benefits of concentrating that work in one place,” says Aleksander Giwercman, one of the initiators of ReproUnion and professor of reproductive medicine at Lund University. Our countries are quite small individually, and it is therefore extremely important that we together come up with a larger critical mass of competence and patient data for research. Important to society: About 15 to 20 percent of couples in the West have trouble having children. Aleksander Giwercman believes that it is a common disease like others and is important to prevent from both medical and socio-economic points of view. These treatments are quite expensive and not so effective. In addition, patients often need to go through many treatments and our understanding of why so many have problems is too low. “If we want to prevent involuntary childlessness, we must first gain a better understanding,” he says. The Öresund region is also at the forefront of reproductive research, which is a good starting point for investing in becoming a world leader in the field. If we succeed, we will not only be happy with the researchers, but also the patients. It is also good purely socio-economic as it can lead to cooperation with industries, which in turn can lead to more efficient and cheaper treatments and new jobs. Synergies across the strait: The project is based on two initial co-operation projects. The third project will now seriously finalise the vision of a cross-border joint reproductive medicine centre. This requires more researchers and more research projects. The project must lead to at least 20 research projects and 25 research posts. They also work to include younger researchers and thereby ensure that skills live on. — Once we have selected the research projects that we are going to profit, we have focused on those projects where we can achieve synergies with working across borders, and where we can add different competencies. Focus on understanding and prevention: At the end of the project, the goal is to have strengthened cooperation with the business community and simplified for patients to receive care in both countries. In addition, they hope that many international actors look to the Öresund region for inspiration.

Achievements (EN):

ReproUnion is a cross-border collaboration between Sweden and Denmark within the area of reproductive medicine in the Øresund Region. More than 50 professors and researchers work across disciplines to drive research in the underlying reasons of infertility and to optimize fertility treatment. ReproUnion also works on preventive initiatives to ensure that the society and young people are equipped with the right information to make informed choices about family planning. As an international pioneer, ReproUnion has established a public-private partnership in reproductive medicine where academia, the healthcare sector, and the life science industry are joining forces to provide the best care with the most modern assisted reproductive technologies to patients in the region. The project is an outstanding example of how we can work together across borders and disciplines to create the best possible conditions for life science research and innovation based on one of the region’s scientific strongholds. Together we have created a new research paradigm and mindset to meet the demands of managing, treating and preventing infertility and related diseases. Public-private partnerships like ReproUnion are an important part of the solution to the challenges facing our healthcare systems. It´s about science, innovation, and growth, but first and foremost it´s about putting patients´ needs first!
