Utvecklingen går snabbt inom offentlig belysning. Projektet Metropolis Lighting ser att samarbete över gränserna kan göra offentliga miljöer smartare och mer energieffektiva. På så sätt vill de skapa bättre och mer beboliga städer. Utvecklad LED-teknologi, bättre styrningsmöjligheter och ljusdesign. Det sker mycket i arbetet med belysning i offentlig miljö, konstaterar Jacob Lundgaard, projektledare för Lighting Metropolis. Det sker faktiskt så pass mycket att det är svårt för kommuner och regioner att hänga med i utvecklingen – men det vill projektet förändra. – Utmaningen är att eftersom utvecklingen går snabbt, särskilt den tekniska utvecklingen, så är det svårt för kommuner att veta hur de ska investera. Det gör att satsningar på bättre belysningen tar längre tid än vad de borde, säger Jacob Lundgaard. Delad kunskap skyndar på arbetet: Lighting Metropolis vill se till att kommuner får rätt kompetens för att göra rätt investeringar. Genom samarbete mellan Sverige och Danmark kan respektive land fokusera på olika områden inom belysning – men likväl få kunskap om allt. Enligt Jacob Lundgaard är Sverige i framkant gällande ljusdesign, medan Danmark är bättre på de tekniska bitarna. – När vi kombinerar våra två styrkor får vi en perfekt match. Vi får dels fokus på att ljuset ska vara bra för människor, och dels fokus på att rätt teknologi används för att möjliggöra det. Vi har samlat tre regioner med nästan fyra miljoner människor, vilket är mycket starkare än om varje land hade arbetat för sig själv. Belysning för bättre städer: Att skifta till nyare teknologi har flera fördelar enligt projektet. Ett av huvudargumenten är att det sparar energi. Bland annat genom att belysningen går att styra bättre än tidigare, exempelvis kan en del gator bara vara ordentligt upplysta när det verkligen behövs – exempelvis när det kommer trafikanter – och ha dämpad belysning när de är folktomma. – I dag kan man göra många nya saker med belysning. Inte minst utveckla hur man använder ljuset i städer så att det blir bättre och härligare att vara i städerna, säger Jacob Lundgaard. Ett sådant exempel är att det har visats att belysningens färg påverkar hur äldre sover, och genom att använda rätt belysning i vårdmiljöer kan man hjälpa dem att tillfriskna snabbare. Likaså har studier visat att studieinlärningen i skolor förbättras med rätt belysning, vilket projektet också vill utveckla. Världsledande inom smarta belysningar: Jacob Lundgaard ser möjligheter i att koppla belysningsfrågor till andra aspekter av så kallade “smarta belysningar”, som att koppla gratis wifi i städer till belysningssystemet så att de får elektricitet. – Det här är nytt inom belysning, det kan jämföras med utvecklingen av smartphone. Från början var det en telefon att ringa med, i dag använder vi den till mycket mer. Samma sak kan fungera för belysningssystem, och det innebär att det är ännu viktigare för kommuner att veta vad de ska investera i, säger Jacob Lundgaard. Projektet vill visa upp de här nya möjligheterna, och har en förhoppning att Öresundsregionen blir den plats i världen dit intresserade kommer för att utveckla, demonstrera och testa nya lösningar inom det som kallas smart urban belysning. Jacob Lundgaard tycker att det är viktigt att arbetet kommer igång snabbt. – Att skapa bra ljus är viktigt för människor. Det handlar om att skapa bättre städer, både utomhus och inomhus, där ljuset gör att staden känns trygg, säker och vacker, säger han.

This means that investing in better lighting takes longer than they should," says Jacob Lundgaard. Shared knowledge speeds up work: Lighting Metropolis wants to ensure that municipalities get the right skills to make the right investments. Through cooperation between Sweden and Denmark, each country can focus on different areas of lighting — but still gain knowledge of everything. According to Jacob Lundgaard, Sweden is at the forefront of lighting design, while Denmark is better at the technical elements. When we combine our two forces, we get a perfect match. We get the focus both on that light should be good for people, and on the other hand focusing on that the right technology is used to enable it. We have gathered three regions with almost four million people, which is much stronger than if each country had worked for itself. Lighting for better cities: Shifting to newer technology has several advantages according to the project. One of the main arguments is that it saves energy. Among other things, because the lighting can be controlled better than before, for example, some streets can only be properly illuminated when it is really needed — for example, when it comes to road users — and have dim lighting when they are empty. Today, many new things can be done with lighting. Not least, develop how to use light in cities so that it becomes better and more beautiful to be in the cities, says Jacob Lundgaard. One such example is that it has been shown that the colour of lighting affects how older people sleep, and by using the right lighting in care environments you can help them recover faster. Similarly, studies have shown that study learning in schools is improved with the right lighting, which the project also wants to develop. World leader in smart lighting: Jacob Lundgaard sees opportunities in linking lighting issues to other aspects of so-called “smart lighting”, such as connecting free Wi-Fi in cities to the lighting system so that they get electricity. This is new in lighting, it can be compared to the development of smartphone. From the beginning it was a phone to call with, today we use it for much more. The same can work for lighting systems, and this means that it is even more important for municipalities to know what to invest in," says Jacob Lundgaard. The project wants to showcase these new opportunities, and hopes that the Öresund region will be the place in the world where interested people come to develop, demonstrate and test new solutions within what is called smart urban lighting. Jacob Lundgaard thinks it’s important that the work gets started quickly. Creating good light is important for people. It’s about creating better cities, both outdoors and indoors, where light makes the city feel safe, safe and beautiful," he says.
