The ESS & MAX IV project is working to maximise the impact of the ESS and MAX IV research facilities. The main focus is on strengthening the skills of young researchers through experimentation and border regional supervision. In June 2016, the new research facility Max IV opens in Lund, and in 2019 the European Spallation Source (ESS) begins to open so small. Together, they will become a world leader in materials research. However, work on the use of the facilities has already begun. Interreg project ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society is the largest ever granted by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerak and is working to solve the challenges for optimal use of the facilities. The aim of the project is to prepare for the best use of the facilities. If only they are built, we are preparing to use them in the best way for research and for society at large," says project manager Eskil Mårtensson. Preparing for Young Scientists: The budget for the project is EUR 19 million. A total of EUR 9.5 million is granted by Interreg Öresund-Skagerak-Kattegat and 27 actors in three countries share the partnership. In order to make maximum use of the research facilities, there are several cross-border challenges that need to be solved together. Eskil Mårtensson paints a picture of the project where the core of the project is to prepare for young researchers to be able to use facilities. The work is complemented by sub-projects on border barriers, marketing, how researchers should thrive and stay and how companies should become suppliers of products and services to the facilities. It’s an exciting combination. Otherwise, it is often about pure research projects end, but here other actors such as authorities, organisations and industry also come in, and we see great synergy opportunities between the sub-projects," says Eskil Mårtensson. Competitive region: Eskil Mårtensson says that the work is of great importance for the entire Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerak region. In the long term, the goal is to create an internationally strong region where technologies in neutrons and synchrotron light are used in both research, industry and society. When eight universities in three countries work together, instead of working separately, we become much stronger internationally than we are today. In the project, young researchers will be trained and supervised to conduct practical experiments and strengthen their user competence in neutrons and synchrotron lighting techniques. Overall, the project is expected to generate 40 new researchers at the participating universities and research facilities. Important for pre-projects: There is considerable work behind the planning and without the pre-project, Eskil Mårtensson believes that it would have been difficult to agree on the common challenges that the project now faces. He describes the pre-project as a rewarding process that helped them understand and get to know each other and develop a well-established and anchored content. Now all participants are looking forward to starting the work. — The different universities have different strengths, just like other organisations are good at different things. Now we will learn from each other and cross-fertilise our knowledge. By working border-regionally, we increase both breadth and competitiveness," says Eskil Mårtensson.

Projektet ESS & MAX IV arbetar med att maximera effekterna av forskningsanläggningarna ESS och Max IV. Störst fokus ligger på att stärka kompetensen hos unga forskare genom experiment och gränsregional handledning. I juni 2016 öppnar den nya forskningsanläggningen Max IV i Lund, och 2019 börjar European Spallation Source, ESS, att öppna så smått. Tillsammans kommer de att bli världsledande inom materialforskning. Men arbetet med att använda anläggningarna har redan påbörjats. Interregprojektet ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society är det största som någonsin beviljats inom Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerak och arbetar med att lösa utmaningarna för att nyttja anläggningarna optimalt. - Projektet går ut på att vi ska förbereda för att få bäst nytta av anläggningarna. Om de bara byggs händer inte så mycket, utan vi förbereder för att använda dem på bästa sätt för forskning och för samhället i stort, säger projektledare Eskil Mårtensson. Förbereder för unga forskare: Projektets budget är 19 miljoner euro. Totalt är 9,5 miljoner euro beviljade av Interreg Öresund-Skagerak-Kattegat och 27 aktörer i tre länder delar på partnerskapet. För att nyttja forskningsanläggningarna maximalt ser man flera gränsöverskridande utmaningar som behöver lösas tillsammans. Eskil Mårtensson målar upp en bild av projektet där själva kärnan är att förberda för unga forskare att kunna använda anläggningar. Arbetet kompletteras med delprojekt om gränshinder, marknadsföring, hur forskare ska trivas och stanna kvar samt hur företag ska bli leverantörer av produkter och tjänster till anläggningarna. - Det är en spännande kombination. Annars handlar det ofta om rena forskningsprojekt punkt slut, men här kommer andra aktörer som myndigheter, organisationer och näringslivet också in, och vi ser stora synergimöjligheter mellan delprojekten, säger Eskil Mårtensson. Konkurrenskraftig region: Eskil Mårtensson säger att arbetet har stor betydelse för hela Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerak -regionen. På lång sikt är målet att skapa en internationellt stark region där tekniker inom neutroner och synkrotronljus används inom såväl forskningen som industrin och samhället. - När åtta universitet i tre länder som arbetar tillsammans, istället för att vi arbetar var för sig, så blir vi internationellt sett mycket starkare än vad vi är idag. I projektet kommer unga forskare att utbildas och handledas att utföra praktiska experiment och stärka sin användarkompetens inom neutroner och synkrotronljustekniker. Totalt sett förväntas projektet generera 40 nya forskare på de deltagande universiteten och forskningsanläggningarna. Viktigt med förprojekt: Det ligger digert arbete bakom planeringen och utan förprojektet tror Eskil Mårtensson att det hade varit svårt att enas om de gemensamma utmaningarna som projektet nu står inför. Förprojektet beskriver han som en givande process, som hjälpte dem förstå och lära känna varandra och utveckla ett genomarbetat och förankrat innehåll. Nu ser alla deltagare fram emot att påbörja arbetet. - De olika universiteten har olika styrkor, precis som övriga organisationer är bra på olika saker. Nu ska vi lära av varandra och korsbefrukta våra kunskaper. Genom att jobba gränsregionalt ökar vi både bredd och konkurrenskraft, säger Eskil Mårtensson.

"The research facilities ESS and MAX IV form a world unique hub in Greater Copenhagen for research in materials science and life science. By teaching young researchers to use the technologies at ESS and MAX IV, strengthening the link with industry and developing the marketing of our research region, the Interreg project “ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society” has invested a total of EUR 19 million on increased cross-border cooperation. Getting talent to stay in the region and reducing border barriers has been further efforts to maximise the benefits of the facilities for Sweden, Denmark and Norway. A cross-border holistic approach: ESS and MAX IV create a fantastic starting point for both research and society as a whole. To develop the potential, 27 organisations in Sweden, Norway and Denmark have worked for three years in the largest project ever within Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak. Eight universities, ESS and MAX IV, government agencies, marketing organisations, regions and municipalities have collaborated in completely new forms. A holistic approach, synergies and cross-border added value have been the cornerstones of the project. Researchers, marketing organisations and authorities have acted together, all parts of the project have worked together and the exchange between countries has provided new competences and strengthened networks. The project has been very clearly directed both at research and regional development. The project has also worked on strengthening dialogue with national authorities in the three countries and increasing links with industry. Strategic platform for border-regional discussions: The project has offered a platform for strategic discussions between Sweden, Denmark and Norway to promote a good foundation and clarify future needs and opportunities. On five occasions, the project has held “Strategic Forum” where different themes have been discussed from a border-regional perspective — including how we develop the science village of Science Village Scandinavia, how we promote innovations based on ESS and MAX IV, and how we increase cooperation with the research facilities DESY and European XFEL in Hamburg. The project has had an Advisory Board, where national level in Sweden, Denmark and Norway met business organisations, research facilities, regional representatives and their EU offices. Through the Advisory Board, the project has gained new perspectives from different levels and areas of expertise, while the results have been lifted to a national and international level. An important factor has been the link between the project and the three countries’ national strategies for ESS and MAX IV. The discussions have also strengthened the links between the actors in the group and initiated new collaboration spaces. In the project’s Steering Group and Coordination Group, the links between the different subprojects have been developed and the knowledge exchange between the countries has been in focus with the aim of developing strengths and creating a holistic view. The project has also participated in a variety of venues to discuss the project’s issues, including at Folkemödet on Bornholm and at the European Commission’s Smart and Sustainable Development Unit. A strong foundation for future cooperation: The many concrete results and strong border regional networks created in the project provide a good basis for the future. The project has left its mark through, for example, competence building among young researchers, collaboration between Swedish and Danish organisations that help international researchers in our region and a joint Swedish-Danish marketing of our strengths in Materials Science and Life Science at fairs across large parts of the world. Continued close dialogue between research facilities and universities, national level, EU level, regions and other stakeholders will be essential for ESS and MAX IV to have the maximum impact on research and society. In the future, we need to further expand the cooperation areas by, for example, establishing closer contacts with the research facilities DESY and European XFEL in Hamburg. This means opportunities to develop an even larger research region together and to increase international attractiveness in a global perspective."

Forskningsanläggningarna ESS och MAX IV bildar ett världsunikt nav i Greater Copenhagen för forskning inom materialvetenskap och Life Science. Genom att lära unga forskare att använda teknikerna vid ESS och MAX IV, stärka kopplingen till näringslivet och utveckla marknadsföringen om vår forskningsregion har Interreg-projektet ”ESS & MAX IV: Cross Border Science and Society” satsat totalt 19 miljoner EUR på ökat gränsregionalt samarbete. Att få talanger att stanna i regionen och minska gränshinder har varit ytterligare insatser för att maximera nyttan av anläggningarna för Sverige, Danmark och Norge. Ett gränsregionalt helhetsperspektiv: ESS och MAX IV skapar en fantastisk utgångspunkt både för forskningen och för samhället som helhet. För att utveckla potentialen har 27 organisationer i Sverige, Norge och Danmark arbetat i tre år i det största projektet någonsin inom Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak. Åtta universitet, ESS och MAX IV, myndigheter, marknadsföringsorganisationer, regioner och kommuner har samarbetat i helt nya former. Strategisk plattform för gränsregionala diskussioner: Projektet har erbjudit en plattform för strategiska diskussioner mellan Sverige, Danmark och Norge för att främja en god förankring och tydliggöra framtida behov och möjligheter. Vid fem tillfällen har projektet hållit ”Strategiskt forum” där olika teman diskuterats ur ett gränsregionalt perspektiv – bland annat hur vi utvecklar forskarbyn Science Village Scandinavia, hur vi främjar innovationer utifrån ESS och MAX IV och hur vi ökar samarbetet med forskningsanläggningarna DESY och European XFEL i Hamburg. Projektet har haft en Advisory Board, där nationell nivå i Sverige, Danmark och Norge mött näringslivsorganisationer, forskningsanläggningarna, regionala företrädare och deras EU-kontor. Genom Advisory Board har projektet fått nya perspektiv från olika nivåer och expertisområden, samtidigt som resultaten har lyfts till en nationell och internationell nivå. En viktig faktor har varit projektets koppling till de tre ländernas nationella strategier för ESS och MAX IV. Diskussionerna har också stärkt banden mellan aktörerna i gruppen och initierat nya samarbetsytor. I projektets Styrgrupp och Koordineringsgrupp har kopplingarna mellan de olika delprojekten utvecklats och kunskapsutbytet mellan länderna varit i fokus med syfte att utveckla styrkor och skapa en helhetssyn. Projektet har också deltagit på en mängd olika arenor för att föra en diskussion kring projektets frågeställningar, bland annat på Folkemödet på Bornholm och på enheten för smart och hållbar utveckling på EU-kommissionen. En stark grund för framtida samarbete: De många konkreta resultat och starka gränsregionala nätverk som skapats i projektet ger en god grund för framtiden. Projektet har lämnat avtryck genom exempelvis kompetensuppbyggnad hos unga forskare, samarbete mellan svenska och danska organisationer som hjälper internationella forskare i vår region och en gemensam svensk-danska marknadsföring av våra styrkor inom Materialvetenskap och Life science på mässor över stora delar av världen. En fortsatt tät dialog mellan forskningsanläggningarna och universitet, nationell nivå, EU-nivå, regioner och andra aktörer kommer att vara mycket viktig för att ESS och MAX IV ska ge maximalt goda effekter för forskning och samhälle. I framtiden behöver vi vidga samarbetsytorna ytterligare genom att till exempel knyta närmare kontakter med forskningsanläggningarna DESY och European XFEL i Hamburg. Det innebär möjligheter att utveckla en ännu större forskningsregion tillsammans och att öka den internationella attraktionskraften i ett globalt perspektiv.
