Description (DE): NWE muss CO2 reduzieren. Eine Hauptquelle der Entstehung von CO2 ist die Erzeugung von Strom und Wärme durch die Verbrennung fossiler Brennstoffe. Diese könnte durch Tiefengeothermie (DGE) weitgehend ersetzt werden. Die Erkundung der DGE in den meisten NWE-Regionen erfordert jedoch spezifische Kenntnisse und Technologien in den komplexen geologischen Situationen (stark gestörte hochpermeable Karbonate und grobe klastische Gesteine), die in DE,FR,BE,NL beispielhaft klar grenzüberschreitend zu finden sind. Ziel von DGE-ROLLOUT ist es, Energie zu erzeugen und den CO2-Ausstoß zu reduzieren, in dem fossile Brennstoffe durch den verstärkten Einsatz der DGE für die Hochtemperatur-Wärmeversorgung großer Infrastrukturen zur Deckung der energetischen Grundlast ersetzt werden. Dies wird durch Mapping und Networking (WPT1), durch Anwendung innovativer Entscheidungs- und Explorationsstrategien (WPT2) und durch Tests zur Produktionsoptimierung (WPT3) erreicht. In 2 Piloten (BE,DE) wird die Produktionsoptimierung durch den Einsatz von Hochtemperatur-Wärmepumpen, Wärmespeicherung und neuen Kaskadierungskonzepten von hoch (>100°C, großes Netzwerk) bis niedrig (>50°C, Einzelbetrieb) getestet und eine CO2-Reduktion von 25.000t/a erreicht. Durch die Realisierung weiterer Anlagen in DE, FR, BE, NL können bis 2022 bis zu 160.000t/a erreicht werden. 10 Jahre nach Projektende werden mindestens 1,6 Mio t/a erreicht, langfristig werden jedoch bis zu 7Mio t/a erwartet. Weitere Aktivitäten werden innovative kostengünstigere, risikominimierendere und zuverlässigere Entscheidungs- und Explorationsstrategien, sowie ein 3D-Atlas der komplexen geologischen Situation als räumliche Grundlage erstellt. Zur Verbreitung von DGE werden Instrumente zur gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanzsteigerung, rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen sowie Geschäftsmodelle für Unternehmen evaluiert und erarbeitet, ein Netzwerk NWE-DGE aufgebaut, um die Ergebnisse und Investitionen nach Projektende langfristig zu sichern.
Read more Description (FR): Le NWE doit réduire ses émissions de CO2, dont une source majeure est la production d’électricité et de chaleur utilisant des combustibles fossiles. Ceux-ci pourraient être majoritairement remplacés par l’utilisation de la géothermie profonde (DGE). Cependant, l’exploration de la DGE dans la plupart des régions du NWE requiert une expertise et des technologies spécifiques en raison des conditions géologiques complexes rencontrées dans la zone frontalière: Allemagne, France, Pays-Bas et Belgique. L’objectif de DGE-ROLLOUT est de produire de l’énergie et de réduire les émissions de CO2 en remplaçant les combustibles fossiles par l’utilisation de la DGE en NWE pour l’apport en haute-température. Ce but sera atteint grâce à la cartographie et la mise en réseau (WPT1), à la mise en place de stratégies innovantes d’aide à la décision et à l’exploration (WPT2), ainsi qu’à l’optimisation de la production (WPT3). Cette optimisation sera testée pour deux sites pilotes (Balmatt, BE; Bochum, DE) grâce à des pompes à chaleur haute température, stockage thermique et de nouveaux schémas de production de chaleur en cascade. Cela se traduira par une réduction de CO2 de 25.000 t/an. En réalisant d’autres sites en DE, FR, BE, NL un niveau de 160.000 t/an pourrait être atteint d’ici 2022. Dix ans après la fin du projet 1.600.000 t/an sera atteint, avec la possibilité d’atteindre 7.000.000 t/an sur le long terme. D’autres activités viseront à développer des stratégies innovantes d’aide à la décision et à l’exploration, moins chères, fiables et minimisant les risques, ainsi qu’un atlas 3D reprenant la complexité géologique, le tout formant la base pour l’utilisation de la DGE. La mise en place des outils DGE visant à augmenter l’acceptation sociale sera évaluée, les conditions légales ainsi que les modèles économiques pour les entreprises seront analysés. Un réseau «NWE-DGE» sera instauré afin d’ancrer les résultats et les investissements après la fin du projet.
Read more Description (EN): NWE has to reduce CO2 emission. One major source of CO2 is the production of electricity and heat by burning fossil fuels, which could be vastly replaced by using deep geothermal energy (DGE). However, the exploration of DGE in most NWE regions requires specific expertise and technologies in the complex geological situations (strongly faulted high permeable carbonates and coarse clastic rocks) that lie across the borders between Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the objective of DGE-Rollout to produce energy and reduce CO2 emissions by replacing fossil fuels through the increased usage of DGE in NWE for large-scale infrastructures requiring high-temperature heat supplies to cover their basic energy loads. This will be achieved by mapping and networking (WPT1), by the application of innovative decision, exploration strategies (WPT2) and testing for production optimization (WPT3). In two pilots (Balmatt, BE; Bochum, DE) production optimization will be tested by implementing high-temperature heat pumps and new cascading schemes from high (>100°C, big network) to low tempatures (>50°C, single enterprise) and to gain a CO2 reduction of 25 000 t/a. By realising further plants in DE, FR, BE, NL this will reach up to 160 000 t/a until 2022. It is estimated that 10 years after the project’s end, at least 1 600 000 t/a reduction will have been achieved. In the long term, it is expected to reach up to 7 000 000 t/a. To set the stage for increased public acceptance of DGE, tools, planning and legal conditions need to be evaluated and business models for enterprises undertaken. A network/cluster “NWE-DGE” will be set up to sustain the outputs and investments in the long term roll-out after the end of the project.

Expected Outputs (EN): 80% of DGE projects fail during exploration and due to unexpected low output: since 1985 in the project area only 6 plants have successfully been developed with 7 end-users, producing 50 MWth. Their CO2 reduction is 122 000 t/y.
