PHOTONIC INTEGRATED CIRCUITS (PICs) Photonics is the manipulation of light particles for transport and processing of data. IINTEGRATED photonics is the emerging technology where the manipulation of light takes place on a chip, making the components an order of magnitude cheaper, smaller and energy-efficient Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) are creating a similar impact as the microelectronics revolution in the 1980s and is emerging in datacentres, 5G telecom, medical, cars, aerospace and agro-food PIC MANUFACTURING FROM LAB TO FAB IN NWE The NWE region contains 75% of the European activities in Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). SMEs play a pivotal role, but most SMEs cannot afford capital-intensive PIC manufacturing facilities Open-access facilities are of a laboratory nature (TRL4) and inadequate for manufacturing PICs with cost-efficiency, speed and reliable quality (TRL7). The equipment for PIC manufacturing is of an innovative, specialised nature that cannot be obtained from a single country. As application grows, NWE needs to stay ahead; intense collaboration between innovation stakeholders at transnational level is needed now PROPOSED PROJECT PLAN OIP4NWE unites 7 enterprises, 3 research institutes and 4 innovation clusters. It includes innovation leaders (NL, DE, BE) to strong innovators (IR, UK) and a less innovative high-potential region in FR. The main output will be a pilot line offering faster, affordable and reliable PIC production. It will be validated by 3 SMEs. A voucher system will be employed for another 7 SME 's SELF-SUSTAINING FUTURE UPON PROJECT COMPLETION After project end, the pilot line will be continued as self-sustainable facilities. Embedding it in an Open Innovation Ecosystem with a TransNational Network, will ensure the NWE position as a global leader in integrated photonics. Projections for 2034 for NWE: 1000 SMEs active in integrated photonics with 3200 new jobs

PHOTONISCHE INTEGRIERTE SCHALTUNGEN (PICs) Photonik ist die Manipulation von Lichtteilchen für den Transport und die Verarbeitung von Daten. INTEGRIERTE Photonik ist eine neue Technologie, bei der die Lichtmanipulation auf einem Chip stattfindet, wodurch die Bauteile viel günstiger, kleiner und energieeffizienter werden. PICs finden Einsatz in Rechenzentren, 5G-Telekommunikation, Medizin, Automobiltechnik, Luftfahrt und Agri-food PIC-FERTIGUNG VOM LABOR IN DIE FABRIK IN NWE Die NWE-Region umfasst 75% der europäischen Aktivitäten im PIC Bereich. KMU spielen eine zentrale Rolle; die meisten KMU können sich jedoch kapitalintensive PIC-Produktionsanlagen nicht leisten. Diese sind auf dem Level von Laboreinrichtungen (TRL4) und nicht geeignet für die kosteneffiziente und schnelle Herstellung von PICs in zuverlässiger Qualität (TRL7). Die innovative, hochspezialisierte Ausrüstung für die PIC-Herstellung kann nicht aus einem einzigen Land bezogen werden. Durch intensive Zusammenarbeit auf transnationaler Ebene sichert NWE seine Marktposition für die Zukunft VORGESCHLAGENER PROJEKTPLAN OIP4NWE vereint 7 Unternehmen, 3 Forschungsinstitute und 4 Innovationscluster. Es reicht von Innovationsführern (NL, DE, BE) über starke Innovatoren (IR, UK) bis hin zu einer weniger innovativen Region mit großem Potential in FR. Das Hauptergebnis wird eine Pilotlinie sein, die eine schnellere, kostengünstigere und zuverlässigere PIC-Produktion ermöglicht. Sie wird von 3 KMU validiert. Für weitere 7 KMU kommt ein Gutscheinsystem zum Einsatz SELBSTTRAGENDE ZUKUNFT NACH PROJEKTENDE Nach Projektende wird die Pilotlinie selbsttragend weitergeführt. Die Einbettung in ein Open-Innovation-Ökosystem mit einem transnationalen Netzwerk stellt sicher, dass NWE eine weltweit führende Rolle in der integrierten Photonik einnimmt. Prognosen für 2034 in NWE: 1.000 KMU tätig in der integrierten Photonik mit 3.200 neuen Arbeitsplätzen

CIRCUITS PHOTONIQUES INTEGRES (PICs) La photonique concerne la manipulation de la lumière. L’apparition de la photonique INTÉGRÉE sur une puce permet de réaliser ainsi des composants moins couteux, plus compacts et moins énergivore. Les PICs créent un impact similaire à la micro-électronique dans les années 80 et apparaissent de plus en plus dans les datacenters, la 5G, le médical, la santé, l’automobile, l’aéronautique, et l’agro-alimentaire FABRICATION DE PIC: DU LABO A L’INDUSTRIE EN NWE La région NWE contient 75% de l’activité européenne dans les PICs. Les PMEs jouent un rôle crucial mais la plupart ne peuvent pas se permettre des installations de fabrication à forte intensité de capital. Les centres technologiques de niveau de TRL faible (TRL4) ne sont pas adaptés à la fabrication rapide de PIC ayant les coûts et la qualité suffisante (TRL7). Les équipements requis sont innovants, très spécialisés et ne peuvent pas être maitrisés dans un seul pays. Du fait d’une croissance des applications, NWE doit rester à la pointe au niveau mondial; une intense collaboration entre les acteurs de l 'innovation au niveau transnational est nécessaire maintenant PLANNING DU PROJET OIP4NWE regroupe 7 entreprises, 2 instituts et 3 pôles d 'innovation, liant ainsi des leaders de l 'innovation (NL, DE, BE) à des innovateurs forts (IR, UK) et une région moins innovante à fort potentiel en FR. Le résultat sera une ligne pilote offrant une production de PIC rapide, abordable et fiable qui sera validée par 3 PMEs. Un système de bon concernera ensuite 7 autres PMEs LA FUTURE AUTOSUFFISANT La ligne pilote continuera ensuite de fonctionner de manière autosuffisante. Inclus dans un écosystème ouvert, innovant et transnational, elle permettra de positionner la région NWE comme un leader global des PICs. Les projections pour 2034 dans NWE: 1000 PME seront actives dans le domaine avec 3200 emplois prévus
