Description (EN): The Data Centre Industry (DCI) is concentrated in NWE, especially UK, Germany, France & Netherlands. DC equipment (DCe) is replaced every 1–5 years, substantially contributing to the production of 11.8 Mt/year of WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment), one of the fastest growing waste streams. WEEE contains Critical Raw Materials (CRM) of high technical & economic importance & vulnerable to supply disruption, usually exported or sent to landfill at end of life. CEDaCI will facilitate the implementation of a Circular Economy (CE) for CRM in NWE and reduce the environmental impact arising from the growth in redundant equipment, by simultaneously increasing materials recovery, reducing use of virgin materials and developing a secure and economically viable CRM supply chain. At present only 10% of CRM are recycled & recovered per year. CEDaCI will increase this to 40% over baseline (107 tonnes) by end of project (ID5.05) and by 400% (242 tonnes) after 10 years. This will be achieved by bringing together all stakeholders (designers, manufacturers, operators, refurbishers, recyclers) in a knowledge-sharing network that, thanks to a Co-creation Platform and 3 integrated Pilots, will produce: 2 products/processes/technologies developed & tested in real life conditions (ID5.02); EcoDesign/Design for CE Guidelines (accelerating manufacture of CE-fit products); a Decision Making Tool (DMT) for all DC sub-sectors to optimise CE business models; and improved refurbishment, recycling and reclamation strategies for WEEE and CRM. These will feed into: a Long Term Strategy (LTS) including delivery at end of project and 10 year maintenance plans; bespoke technical assistance (DMT training sessions) for 50 DCI businesses (CO1); advice and guidelines for policy-influencers and makers; and a physical and virtual demonstrator that explains the CE context, processes and benefits. These will ensure the project impact and long term legacy.
Read more Description (DE): In NWE ist die Rechenzentren-Industrie (RZI) stark verortet v.a. in Großbritannien, Deutschland, Frankreich und den Niederlanden. Geräte und Komponenten werden alle 1-5 Jahre ersetzt. Dieser schnelle Austausch trägt wesentlich zur Produktion von 11,8 Mio. t/Jahr Elektro und Elektronikgeräte-Abfall (EEA) bei, einem der am schnellsten wachsenden Abfallströme. Diese Abfälle enthalten kritische Rohstoffe (KR), die von hoher technischer und wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung sind und deren Verfügbarkeit durch deren Export oder Entsorgung gefährdet ist. Daher strebt CEDaCI eine gezielte Umsetzung einer Kreislaufwirtschaft (KLW) in NWE, um Umweltauswirkungen zu reduzieren, die sich aus der Zunahme redundanter Anlagen ergeben. Die Materialrückgewinnung wird erhöht, weniger Neuware eingesetzt und die Entwicklung einer wirtschaftlich tragfähigen KR-Lieferkette forciert. Derzeit werden nur 10% der KR jährlich recycelt und verwertet. CEDaCI wird diese Rate bis zum Projektende (ID5.05) auf 40% und nach 10 Jahren auf 400% (242 Tonnen) erhöhen. Alle Beteiligten (Hersteller, Betreiber, Refurbisher, Recycler) werden in einem Netzwerk zusammengeführt und in einer Co-Creation-Plattform und drei integrierten Piloten Folgendes erarbeiten: 2 Produkte/Prozesse/Technologien, unter realen Bedingungen entwickelt und getestet (ID5.02); EcoDesign/KR-Design-Leitlinien (Beschleunigung der Herstellung von KR-optimierten Produkten); Decision Making Tool (DMT) für alle RZI-Teilbereiche zur Optimierung von KLW-Geschäftsmodellen; und verbesserte Refurbishment-, Recycling-und Rückgewinnungsstrategien für EEA und KR. Diese werden in eine Langfriststrategie einfließen (10 Jahresplan). Zudem werden Schulungen zum DMT für 50 RZI-Unternehmen (CO1) durchgeführt sowie Beratung und Leitlinien für politische Entscheidungsträger bereitgestellt. Ein physischer und virtueller Demonstrator wird entwickelt. Diese Aktivitäten werden die langfristige Wirkung des Projekts sicherstellen.

Les Equipements des Data Centers (EDC) sont renouvelés tous les 1-5 ans. Ce qui contribue en partie à la production de 11,8Mt/an de Déchets Electroniques (DE) (déchets à forte croissance en EU). Les DE contiennent des Matières Premières Critiques (MPC) qui sont importantes techniquement et économiquement mais vulnérables aux fluctuations du marché. En fin de vie, ces DE sont généralement exportés ou envoyés en zones de stockage. CEDaCI compte faciliter l’intégration de l’économie circulaire (EC) pour les MPC en NOE & réduire l 'impact environnemental de ces équipements en augmentant simultanément la récupération des matériaux et l 'utilisation de matériaux vierges, en développant une chaîne d 'approvisionnement MPC sécurisée et économiquement viable. Seulement 10% des MPC sont recyclées par an. CEDaCI portera ce taux à 40% (107t) (fin du projet) (ID5.05) puis à 400% (242t) (sur 10ans). Expected Outputs (EN): At present 507 tonnes of 10 types of CRM are used in DC equipment in NWE every year. 50% are reused in DC sector & 50% become ‘waste’ (heat recovery, incineration, landfill). 7 types & 53 tonnes (10.5% of total) are recycled & used in many sectors.
